From Max Weber: Essays in Sociology, translated and edited by H. H. Gerth and C. Wright Mills, is a landmark anthology that introduced Max Weber’s foundational social theory to the English-speaking world. The volume systematically gathers Weber’s crucial writings on power, bureaucracy, social stratification, and religion, organized around his central theme: the relentless rationalization and “disenchantment” of modern Western society.

The collection opens with Gerth and Mills’s seminal intellectual introduction, followed by Weber’s classic speeches, “Politics as a Vocation” and “Science as a Vocation.” In these essays, Weber defines the state by its monopoly on legitimate physical violence, contrasts charismatic leadership with bureaucratic administration, and analyzes the distinct ethical responsibilities of scholars and politicians operating in a disillusioning, hyper-specialized world.

A key contribution of the volume is Weber’s multidimensional model of social stratification. Moving beyond pure economics, he demonstrates how power is distributed through class (economic market situation), status (social honor and prestige), and party (political power). Coupled with this is his famous analysis of bureaucracy—an indispensable, highly efficient, yet dehumanizing system of administrative domination that locks modern individuals into an “iron cage.” He contrasts this rigid order with the disruptive potential of charismatic authority.

Finally, the religious essays explore how belief systems interact with economic life. Weber examines the social psychology of world religions, the Protestant ethic’s role in fostering modern capitalism, and the distinct institutional frameworks of the Indian caste system and the Chinese Confucian literati. Ultimately, the collection highlights Weber’s master insight: that ideas and material interests jointly shape human history, leaving a profound impact on contemporary sociology.
The post From Max Weber: Essays in Sociology first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

The post Politik als Beruf Max Weber first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

The post Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft Max Weber first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

Sociology Theory by George Ritzer offers a comprehensive overview of the history of sociological theory from its inception to the latest theoretical developments. Our goal is to combine a discussion of the major classical theorists (Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Simmel) with the most important contemporary theories and theorists. In one convenient volume, this book offers students a handy overview of much of what they need to know about sociological theory, both past and present.

As is always the case, we faced difficult decisions about what to add and what to cut. There are some important additions to this edition. Most broadly, throughout this edition we have updated references and added new material. As such, the student can be assured that the treatment of all theorists in this book, as well as reference to contemporary scholarship, is as up-to-date as possible. In order to ensure that the text did not become too lengthy and cumbersome, we also removed or rewrote some sections. These decisions reflect the changing face of sociological theory. Among the major changes/additions are the following:

In Chapter 1, we have added a discussion of colonialism to the section on social forces. Colonialism, as we point out in Chapter 1 and Chapter 15, is an important, though often neglected (at least in mainstream sociological theory), factor in the development of modern society. We’ve added this material to underline its importance.

The timelines in both Chapters 1 and 6 have been updated with new material and the timeline in Chapter 1 has a new, easier to navigate form.

To Part I, the classical section of the book, we have added contemporary application sections at the end of Chapters 2–5. This addition is motivated by the understanding that students are eager to understand the relevance of classical theory for the contemporary moment. In each of the contemporary application sections, we summarize two or three recent research studies that make use of classical theoretical concepts. While the kinds of applications vary, we have chosen those that deal with cutting-edge sociological issues: racism, the Internet, consumerism, and the environment, among others.

Chapter 3 includes new material on Durkheim’s debate with Gabriel Tarde, an enhanced section on collective effervescence, and updates on contemporary commentary on Durkheim.

Chapter 5, on Simmel, has been updated to include material from his recently translated later writings. This addition is significant because it introduces the concept of “life” and shows how it influenced Simmel’s overall theory.

In Chapter 6, we have expanded the discussion of the historical significance of the early women founders and W.E.B. Du Bois, especially Du Bois’s contribution to the development of the Atlanta School of Sociology.

The most significant addition to this volume is a new chapter, Chapter 15, on theories of race and colonialism. In addition to historically influential theories of race and colonialism, this chapter includes a section on contemporary Indigenous theories.

To Chapter 18, we have added a section on prosumption theory, the most recent development in the study of consumer society. This section shows the ways in which the Internet and prosumer movements are changing the character of contemporary capitalism.

Thus, the text is much as it always has been but is renewed once again. The wonderful things about theory are both its continuity and its ever-changing character. We have tried to communicate those and other joys of sociological theory to readers in the early stages of their exposure to it.
The post Sociological Theory George Ritzer first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

In Who’s Afraid of Gender?, Judith Butler analyzes how right-wing and conservative movements turn "gender" into a scapegoat for societal anxieties.

In Who’s Afraid of Gender?, philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler examines the global rise of the “anti-gender movement”—a loose coalition of right-wing politicians, religious conservatives, and trans-exclusionary activists who brand “gender” as a dangerous ideology threatening traditional society, family values, and human nature.

Butler argues that the term “gender” has been turned into a phantasmic scapegoat, blamed for widespread anxieties caused by economic instability, war, and political uncertainty. Rather than engaging with actual academic gender theory, anti-gender forces project various cultural fears onto the concept, using it to justify censorship, book bans, and the stripping of reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights worldwide.

The book traces how this backlash manifests across different regions, analyzing Vatican rhetoric, right-wing authoritarian movements, and British gender-critical feminism. Butler reveals how these diverse groups unite around a shared fantasy of a fixed, natural sexual dimorphism, often ignoring the complex racial, colonial, and social histories that shape our understanding of sex and body autonomy.

Ultimately, Butler calls for a broad coalition against fascism and authoritarianism. They urge readers not to retreat in fear, but to envision a world rooted in solidarity, bodily autonomy, and freedom for all. Who’s Afraid of Gender? offers a passionate defense of human rights and a crucial critique of contemporary cultural warfare.
The post Who’s Afraid of Gender? Judith Butler first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

In The Managed Heart, Arlie Hochschild introduces "emotional labor"—the commercialization of human feelings in service jobs.

In The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling, sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild explores how the modern service economy commodifies personal emotions, introducing the seminal concept of emotional labor. Hochschild defines emotional labor as the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display, which is sold for a wage and holds exchange value in the marketplace.

Drawing on extensive field research—primarily focusing on flight attendants trained to radiate warmth and debt collectors trained to project urgency—Hochschild contrasts private emotional management with its commercial use. In daily life, people manage emotions according to social “feeling rules” to show respect or gratitude. However, when corporations mandate these emotional displays, worker feelings become a product engineered for profit.

To meet job demands, workers employ two main techniques: surface acting, where they feign expressions without changing inner feelings, and deep acting, where they actively manipulate their thoughts and memories to experience the required emotion genuinely. Over time, performing continuous emotional labor forces workers to suppress their authentic emotional responses, leading to severe psychological consequences.

Hochschild highlights the risks of emotional burnout, self-estrangement, and alienation. When feelings become tools for efficiency, employees struggle to distinguish genuine personal emotions from commercialized performances. Additionally, she emphasizes the gendered nature of this labor, noting that women are disproportionately expected to perform emotional tasks due to historical social conditioning and status expectations.

Ultimately, The Managed Heart offers a vital critique of modern capitalism, demonstrating how corporate control has expanded beyond physical energy to commercialize human emotion, forever altering our relationship with our own feelings.
The post The Managed Heart Arlie Russell Hochschild first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

In Strangers in Their Own Land, Arlie Hochschild explores the emotional root of Tea Party conservatism in Louisiana. She introduces the "deep story"—a narrative of hard-working Americans feeling passed over by line-cutters and betrayed by the government, illuminating the deep cultural and political divide in modern America.

In Strangers in Their Own Land, sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild travels to the heart of Louisiana bayou country to solve a burning question: why do working-class Americans often vote for politicians whose policies deregulate corporations, weaken environmental laws, and cut the very safety nets that could help them?

Instead of dismissing her interviewees, Hochschild seeks to bridge the “empathic wall.” She introduces the concept of the “deep story”—a metaphor that captures how right-wing voters feel about their lives. In this story, people are standing patiently in a line moving toward the American Dream. They have worked hard and played by the rules. But suddenly, they see line-cutters—minorities, immigrants, refugees, women—being ushered ahead by a federal government that seems to favor everyone except the traditional working class. When the government calls them racist or privileged for feeling betrayed, it adds insult to injury.

This deep emotional narrative explains why residents living near toxic chemical spills still passionately oppose government regulation. For them, the free market represents freedom, self-reliance, and pride, while the federal government feels like a intrusive entity that undermines their community values and dishonors their sacrifice.

By shifting the focus from policy arguments to core emotional truths, Hochschild offers a compassionate, eye-opening look into America’s political divide, showing that understanding another person’s feelings is the first step toward genuine dialogue.
The post Strangers in Their Own Land Arlie Russell Hochschild first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

In Bodies That Matter, Judith Butler deepens the theoretical framework introduced in Gender Trouble (1990) by directly addressing a key criticism: if gender is performatively constructed, what happens to the physical reality of the body? Butler responds by arguing that the very “materiality” of the body is not a natural, pre-existing fact, but a product of regulatory power structures.

The core argument centers on the concept of performativity, which Butler redefines not as a singular, conscious act, but as a repetitive, ritualized practice driven by social norms. Through this constant iteration, the physical body is materialized over time. Butler asserts that “sex” is not an undeniable biological binary preceding culture; rather, it functions as a normative ideal enforced through heterosexual hegemony. This dominant framework determines which bodies are recognized as culturally viable and which are marginalized or deemed “unintelligible.”

Key themes explored in the text include:

Materiality as a Process: Matter is not a fixed, static site, but a continuous process of materialization regulated by power and discourse.

The Abject Body: Bodies that fail or refuse to conform to compulsory heterosexuality are cast out as “abject”—zones of uninhabitable social life that paradoxically define the boundaries of accepted bodies.

Queer Performative Agency: Resistance emerges from the impermissibility of perfect repetition. Because norms must be continually performed, opportunities arise to disrupt, subvert, and re-signify dominant terms and identities.

Butler illustrates these concepts through analyses of foundational philosophical texts (Plato, Freud, Lacan, Foucault) as well as contemporary culture, notably Jennie Livingston’s documentary Paris Is Burning, examining drag, race, and queer subcultures. Ultimately, Bodies That Matter redefines bodily existence, demonstrating that physical materiality cannot be separated from the political forces that shape it.
The post Bodies that Matter Judith Butler first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

Gender Trouble by Judith Butler fundamentally reshaped feminist and queer theory. Butler challenges fixed notions of gender, introducing gender performativity—the idea that gender is constructed through repeated social acts rather than determined by biology, exposing its regulatory nature.

Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity challenges traditional ideas about gender, sex, and sexuality. Butler argues that gender is not a natural expression of biological sex, nor a fixed personal identity. Instead, gender is performative—it is created and maintained through repeated stylized acts, gestures, and behaviors enforced by social norms.

Butler critique the assumption that “women” form a unified group with shared interests. They argue that traditional feminist theory often accidentally reinforces rigid gender binaries and heteronormativity. By assuming that sex is biological and gender is cultural, theorists treat the male/female division as fixed. Butler counters that even biological “sex” is understood through cultural frameworks, making it just as socially constructed as gender.

Drawing on poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, and cultural theory, Butler examines how language and power shape our understanding of bodies. They analyze works by Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva, and Monique Wittig to show how society enforces a heterosexual matrix—a system that requires coherent links between sex, gender, and desire.

To subvert these rigid norms, Butler points to practices like drag. Drag exposes the imitation at the heart of all gender roles, demonstrating that there is no “original” gender behind the performance. Rather than seeking a fixed identity, Butler advocates for expanding political possibilities by disrupting binary categories and making space for diverse, non-normative gender expressions.
The post Gender Trouble Judith Butler first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.

The post Sur la télévision Pierre Bourdieu first appeared on Sociología Contemporánea - Desde 2004.
