Apparently, renters aren’t really into using social media to find their next apartment.

That according to a survey of 850 Apartments.com visitors found …

71% percent are active on social media.

But 25% used it during their apartment search.

When they did use social media tools for an apartmenst search, the top five benefits: Additional apartment community information and recommendations (58%); photos and videos of apartments (55%); apartment listings (53%); hunting for special offers (47%); and sharing apartment information with friends and seeking feedback (21%).

Chris Brown of Apartments.com: ”As social media continues to evolve online communications, we believe more apartment communities will follow suit and become more visible in this space … Residents will likely be receptive to interacting with their apartment communities in this way, especially if the content is meaningful.”

ON MARKETING

Sales used to be face-to-face. Now it is again!

How do you get your own customers to replace your marketing director? Get referrals!

What Jeff Pulver (operator of 140 Character conferences) taught him early on .. You live or die with your database!

Rethink your email marketing! Why do we treat our email subscribers like crap with bad content.

ON CONTENT

Every business is a media company today. Content sells.

Squint at your web site. Can you see the call to action? If not, you fail!

Storytelling sells. Make videos about your buyers, not your own product or yourself!

People are drawn to faces. Put faces on your websites, especially your “About” pages.

Brevity matters! Focus on one item at a time. Remember people read email on their phones!

Brogan at Oakley

ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Good marketing has nothing to do with Twitter … or anything that starts with “Tw”!

Facebook won’t solve your problems. YOU will solve your problems.

Don’t force social media on companies that don’t get social media. It’s just too tough!

Bosses now ask social media pros now “How do we make money from this?” You can’t eat a hug from your community.

On Twitter, talk about your customers — NOT YOURSELF! Treat your customers well by recognizing them.

Please revamp your LinkedIn profile. (The funny titles mean you’re unemployed!)

FourSquare is AOL of location-based services. It’s cool because it’s the only one! But something’s there!

ON COMMUNITY

Secret to growing audience is helping other people, not writing about yourself.

I cannot solve your business problems. People in this room can. Patronize people within your community.

Think about alliances. Everybody’s business is dying. So others are willing to partner, they just won’t admit it!

ON INNOVATION

3 keys are experiment, execute and expand community.

How do you find “Beginner’s Mind” … when you didn’t know anything?

100 years ago I’d be talking about this new thing called “Phone!” Social media is today’s “Phone!”

In the old days if you had a truck you had a job. Technology lets you do that once again.

Change is hard. NO company wants you to disrupt them.

Marketing often feels icky when you sell too hard. I want to shake your hand; you stick your tongue in my mouth.

Find what yields the most and do that!

ON HIMSELF

I’m not arrogant, I’m just confident I’m right.

It’s silly that I fly around the world to say video on the web is cool.

Time management? Don’t watch TV. Never seen “Orange People of Orange County”

I will never be a cubicle monkey again!

Elliot’s next gathering features social media rock star Chris Brogan on Tuesday night in Foothill Ranch. (DETAILS HERE!) Elliot was kind enough to let sOCial Sunday steal some snippets of his meeting-maximizing tactics …

If you’re like me you’ve been to a bunch of networking events, seminars and business conferences. Some are good and some have been really bad, right? I’m not going to focus on the bad stuff, but suffice to say I created Linked Orange County because I couldn’t find what I was looking for out there. Now, we’re far from perfect and there’s lots of room for improvement, but we are trying to do things differently and have great events that actually mean something to you and produce the results you’re looking for. Here are 6 tips that might make the difference:
1. DO Attend the Event: Actually showing up is important. Remember Wayne Gretzky: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
2. DO Have a Goal: It answers the question: “Why/What’s the point of this?” Once you know WHY, you can start planning WHAT you’ll do to accomplish your goal when you’re at the event.
3. DO Your Homework: Come prepared to ask questions.
4. DO Bring a Camera, Video and Take Notes. Need content that will drive visitors to your site? Content and context is king.
5. DO NOT Pass Out Business Cards To Every Person: You should get to know someone a little and IF there’s a match, exchange cards.
6. DO Break Out of Your Comfort Zone. It’s fun to be social and talk with the people you know and like, just remember the reason you’re attending.

This week, sOCial sunday previews the next local mega-event, thanks to Ted Nguyen of Orange County Transit Authority …

Orange County professionals are using interactive tools to connect with each other and provide support and services — often times at no cost or significantly low cost. And the social media users are coming together for “ConnectOC” this Thursday night in Costa Mesa.

The no-cost event begins at 6 p.m. and provides business as well as professional networking opportunities. Organizers expect approximately 500 people to attend that will help raise $5,000 for two nonprofits in Orange County: Childhelp prevents and treats child abuse; and Build Futures connects homeless youths 18 to 24 with stable housing and mentorship.

“It’s part of our effort to bring our online conversation that we’re having every day with each other and take it offline to see each other face to face and continue supporting each other during the turbulence times of this economic recession,” said Dean Soto, owner of a business and technology consulting firm called Pro Sulum and a veteran of the Iraq war. “The latest business forecast shows that Orange County will lead California out of this recession, and it’s because of small businesses, major firms, nonprofits and public agencies coming together to ignite our economy.”

Hoping to spark a new economic revolution in the heart of Orange County, several entrepreneurs within the region found that there were no large-scale networking gatherings in the area that were also accessible to professionals struggling financially. Rather than continue the trend of pay-as-you-go networking, the organizers launched Connect O.C. earlier this year. The first event in February, sponsored by the Hilton Hotel, brought together more than 400 participants supported by 50 sponsors with gift bags filled with local vendor products, gourmet delicacies and most importantly business connections.

“I went with a friend and was very impressed with the caliber of the event’s members,” said Lonnie McDanel, an Orange County resident. “We had a wonderful time and laughed a lot … something sorely needed in this difficult economy. It was network heaven.”

Know Before You Go:

Silent auction & opportunity drawings with 100 percent of the proceeds raised going to our two nonprofits

Special, social-media themed drink options (Twittini, anyone?)

Free appetizers from 6 to 7 p.m.for first 250 attendees

Free delicious desserts provided by Orange County’s great cupcake, candy & ice cream stores

NATIONAL DEFENSE UNIVERSITY GETS NEW PRESIDENT

US Fed News Service, Including US State News July 14, 2006 The U.S. Department of Defense’s American Forces Information Service issued the following press release:

By Steven Donald Smith American Forces Press Service Marine Lt. Gen. Frances C. Wilson took the reins today as the 12th president of the National Defense University at Fort McNair here. Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presided over the change of command ceremony. Pace lauded outgoing NDU President Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael M. Dunn for expanding the university’s curriculum and reaching out to the international community. see here national defense university

“As sad as we are to see Mike go, we’re delighted to have Fran take that flag today and carry this institution forward,” Pace said. “She brings four master’s degrees and one doctoral degree to the fight, as well as many other things.” Under Dunn’s guidance, Pace said, NDU now offers valuable courses specifically geared toward senior enlisted military members, more classes for civilian government personnel, and additional coursework on homeland security issues. “The curriculum has retained its quality and has expanded the opportunity for those who want to come here and learn,” the chairman said.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of my job here at NDU. What’s absolutely amazing to me is that the No. 1 attribute of the job is that it’s not at the Pentagon,” Dunn, who is retiring after 34 years of military service, said with a chuckle.

The university’s mission is to prepare military and civilian leaders from the U.S. and other countries to better address national and international security challenges through multi-disciplinary educational programs, research, professional exchanges and outreach. The school’s master’s program is a one-year intensive study program. Students do not work normal day jobs while attending the program. this web site national defense university

“This institution allows officers the opportunity to come in out of the field and reflect, learn, discuss, and share ideas with international officers,” Pace said. “It allows government civilians, the collection of faculty, staff, and international students to stop doing today’s business and think about tomorrow’s.” Communicating across borders enables the sharing of lessons learned and the ability to normalize views on the war on terrorism, “so we understand each other better, internationally,” Dunn said.

Wilson spoke briefly during the ceremony, saying she wanted to adhere to an old Irish saying she once heard: “My role today is to be that of a corpse at an Irish wake. I’m necessary for the ceremony, but no one expects me to say much,” she said to loud applause.

The new university president did, however, say she was committed to meeting the challenges of her new job. “To rise to the challenges at hand we cannot afford to rest on the platinum reputation we’ve established,” she said. “It’s time now to rededicate ourselves to think and act anew.” Pace officially promoted Wilson to the rank of lieutenant general just prior to the change of command ceremony.

Wilson said that shortly after Pace received his third star, she ran into him in a Pentagon hallway. When she congratulated him on his promotion, he responded that he was just grateful to be able to continue serving his country, she recollected.

“This was not the response I envisioned,” she said. “I went back and thought about it, and he’s right. I feel very blessed, not because of the promotion, but because it affords me the opportunity to serve my country, which has been so good to me.” The National Defense University, which was founded in 1976, is made up of the of the National War College, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Joint Forces Staff College, Information Resources Management College, School for National Security Executive Education, Institute for National Strategic Studies, Institute for Homeland Security Studies, Center for Technology and National Security Policy, Center for the Study of Weapons of Mass Destruction, and seven special programs including Capstone, Pinnacle, Keystone, Joint Reserve Affairs Center, International Student Management Office, Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellows, and the NATO Staff Officer Orientation Course.

A novel educational effort comes to Orange County this month, when RE BarCamp OC will be held Thursday, Aug. 19 at the UC Irvine Student Center. (Registration opens at 8:00. Last session ends at 4:15!) Unlike a typical all-day workshop with its preformed, built-in-stone agenda BarCamps are free-flowing exchanges of tips and ideas among the experts and noves who attend on online communications and social media as they apply to real estate. It’s free but does require pre-registartion at www.rebarcampoc.com.

We at sOCial sunday asked organizer Stacey Harmon of Harmon Enterprises to explain what’s coming and how to get the most out of RE BarCamp OC:

RSVP: This will ensure you receive communications from the event planners regarding important details about the day – parking, happy hour, session details, etc. (REBCOC flyer HERE!)

Participate: BarCamp is about active participation from the attendees. The schedule for the day is set by the attendees, the day of the event by popular vote. As yourself, what do you want to get out of RE BarCamp OC? Pre-submit a topic (via the form on the event website) to facilitate a discussion about what YOU are interested in. You don’t have to be the expert –- your topic, if chosen by a popular vote of the attendees the day of RE BarCamp — will attract others who want to dialogue about the same topic. BarCamp is designed to facilitate open conversations. It isn’t about speakers, or sponsors, giving a presentation — it is about someone taking the lead to say “let’s talk about this”.

Attend RE BarCamp Bootcamp: If the unstructured, “un-conference” structure of RE BarCamp is new or uncomfortable to you, be sure to arrive in time for RE BarCamp Bootcamp – a half hour orientation the day of the event and will help explain to you how to get the most out of your RE BarCamp experience. RE BarCamp Bootcamp will start promptly at 8:30am and run until 9:00 am.

Vote: As a RE Barcamp attendee, you’ll have the opportunity to vote on which sessions you want to be part of the schedule that day. Voting will end at 9:45 am so be sure to arrive in enough time to participate in creating the schedule for the day.

Practice the Rule of 2-Feet: Once the schedule for the day is set (something that will happen the morning of RE BarCamp) you don’t like a conversation that is going on in one room, walk to another room. If you don’t like the conversation that is going on in any of the rooms, create your own. There is ample space in the venue to start a conversation. Do it. Also, if a vendor tries to take control of a conversation and convert it to a sales pitch, move on. You are not obliged to stay. The events attracts all kinds of interesting people who are interested in talking to YOU. Find them!

Don’t Hang Out With The People You Came With, Network! One of the most powerful aspects of RE BarCamp is the people it attracts. It hasn’t always been easy to find RE BarCamp which is historically promoted online and through word of mouth. Those that find it tend to have a certain bias towards technology – either they proactively use it, they are creating solutions for our industry with it, or the are curious about how to apply it to their business. This orientation is a great filter that helps to put you in touch with like minded people, in person. Make the most of it. Bring business cards. Make sure your cards tell people how they can connect with you beyond your phone number – include your website, your blog, your Facebook URL, your Twitter handle, your LinkedIn profile URL – whatever you have! The connections you make at RE BarCamp can grow online long after the event ends and lead to additional business and learning opportunities.
Cholestasis Secondary to Panhypopituitarism in an Infant

Journal of the National Medical Association March 1, 2008 | DeSalvo, Daniel; Pohl, John F; Wilson, Don P; Bryant, William; Easley, David; Greene, John; Santiago, Jose Cholestasis occurring in infancy should be evaluated completely to exclude hepatic as well as endocrine or metabolic causes. A rapid diagnosis should be made to ensure that hepatic and neurologic complications are prevented. We describe a rare case of infant cholestasis due to panhypopi-tuitarism resulting in hypoglycemia and liver biopsy findings consistent with bile duct paucity. Existing bile ducts were noted to be small, and electron microscopy demonstrated diminutive and atrophied biliary cells with a diminished bile duct lumen size. Hypoglycemia and cholestasis resolved with treatment of the underlying panhypopituitarism. Panhypo-pituitarism should be considered in any infant who presents with cholestasis, hypoglycemia, and other manifestations of pituitary malfunction. Growth hormone deficiency may affect bile duct formation as demonstrated in this patient.

Key words: liver * infant health CASE A DESCRIPTION A six-week-old female was referred to our hospital from an outside facility for evaluation of cholestasis. Birth history was significant for pregnancy that was complicated by placental abruption and a resultant caesarean section. Her birthweight was 2.5 kg. The child continued to remain jaundiced after a month of age and was described by her parents as lethargic. She was a poor eater and had a weight of 2.7 kg at one month of age.

The baby had no history of fever or evidence of infection. She was tolerating a diet consisting of breast milk with no reported emesis, hematemesis, cough, diarrhea, constipation or acholic stools. On physical exam, she was noted to have weight and length parameters well below the fifth percentile for age and gender, based on CDC growth charts. Hepatomegaly was present with the liver palpable 4 cm below the right costal margin. She was noted to be jaundiced and was also hypotonic with a weak cry. here cdc growth charts

Laboratory data on admission revealed an elevated direct bilirubin of 3.4 mg/dL, with a total bilirubin level of 6.1 mg/dL and normal gamma glutamyltransferase level of 82 IU/L. Serum transaminase levels were within normal limits. The patient’s hemoglobin was low at 8 g/ dL, but all other laboratory testing, including the remaining complete blood count, electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, serum amino acids, urine organic acids, acetylcarnitine profile, prothrombin time/activated partial thromboplastin time, viral hepatitis panel and alpha 1-antitrypsin phenotype, were normal. An abdominal ultrasound demonstrated a dysplastic gallbladder but normal-appearing hepatic parenchyma and common bile duct.

A liver biopsy was performed, and hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed bile duct paucity as well as small, atypical bile ducts with cholestasis and mild peri-portal inflammation. Trichome staining showed no significant fibrosis, and electron microscopy demonstrated that the bile ducts had a small, irregular lumen diameter with surrounding biliary cells that were atrophied and nonrounded in appearance (Figure 1). Peroxisomes and mitochondria had a normal appearance.

Throughout her hospitalization, the patient was noted to have bradycardia and apneic episodes associated with hypoglycemia as low as 27 mg/dL that responded to significant infusions of intravenous dextrose. She had a cortisol level that was below detectable assay limits, and laboratory findings at the time of hypoglycemia included a growth hormone level of 0.3 ng/mL (well below normal for age) and a low cortisol level of 1.5 ?µg/dL. Free thyroxine, thyroid-stimulating hormone and prolactin levels were normal. An adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test demonstrated a low baseline cortisol level that demonstrated a brisk response after standard ACTH administration. Hypopituitarism was suspected, and head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an absence of pituitary infundibulum as well as an ectopic neurohypophysis (Figure 2).

Subcutaneous growth hormone replacement therapy at 0.15 mg daily was administered (0.4 mg/kg/week), and oral hydrocortisone at 2.5 mg was given every eight hours (35 mg/m2/day). Additionally, stress doses of 25 mg hydrocortisone were injected as needed with intramuscu-lar glucagon (0.3 mg) administered as needed for hypoglycemia. A nasogastric tube for formula feeding also was placed. Her blood glucose levels stabilized, and cholesta-sis resolved within 2-3 weeks after initiation of therapy.

Currently, the patient is doing well, and her nasogas-tric tube has been removed as she maintains a euglyce-mic state with oral feeds. Her height and weight parameters have reached the fifth percentile of the CDC growth charts, and her height-for-weight calculation is at the 50th percentile. A sequence analysis of PROP1, a common gene mutated in pituitary abnormalities, has revealed a guanine substitution for adenosine, suggesting a genetic mutation leading to the patient’s clinical features.

DISCUSION Cholestasis in infancy has a broad differential diagnosis list, which includes infectious, metabolic, obstructive, genetic and iatrogenic causes. One of the goals of evaluating the cholestatic infant is to narrow such a broad differential list quickly to prevent progressive hepatic disease and neurologic complications, as can be seen with panhypopituitarism.

Although hypoglycemia typically is detected shortly after birth in children with pituitary abnormalities, there have been reports of hypoglycemia occurring several weeks after the neonatal period, with cholestasis being the initial presenting symptom.1 Other symptoms of neonatal hypopituitarism include poor weight gain, temperature instability and apnea.2 Growth hormone deficiency also is commonly associated with hypopituitarism, and the combined clinical presentation of hypoglycemia and growth hormone deficiency typically is diagnostic for hypothalamic or pituitary abnormalities.3 Hence, head MRI is an important diagnostic tool. site cdc growth charts

The link between hypopituitarism and associated cho-lestasis is not well understood; however, lack of growth hormone may affect liver function through decreased bile acid synthesis and structural abnormalities of the bile acid canaliculi.1 In murine models, growth hormone appears to be involved with bile salt excretion as well as biliary cell differentiation and proliferation, which could explain this patient’s electron microscopy findings. 4 Cortisol deficiency also can cause a neonatal cho-lestatic hepatitis.5 Patients with agenesis involving the anterior pituitary often are diagnosed at a younger age than patients with other types of pituitary disorders, and they are more likely to present with hypoglycemia and cholestasis. Such patients do not have an increased risk of genetic mutations involving pituitary structural development.6 Conversely, mutations in PROP1 have wide-ranging phenotypic presentations and cannot always be used accurately for genotype-phenotype correlations.7 Administration of hydrocortisone and growth hormone, as well as L-thyroxine, leads to resolution of cholestasis in such children.8 Interestingly, most patients with PROP1 mutations present with corticotrophic, somatotrophic and thy-rotrophic deficiencies diagnosed in the postpubertal age.9 Our patient presented in infancy and had normal thyroid function, which makes this case unusual.

The long-term effects of panhypopituitarism are unclear. A review of 56 patients with optic nerve hypoplasia and associated hypopituitarism demonstrated that growth hormone was the most common hormone deficiency. Developmental delay was seen only in those patients with an underlying seizure disorder or hydrocephalus.10 In conclusion, this case demonstrates the importance of considering panhypopituitarism in any infant that presents with cholestasis and hypoglycemia. Brain imaging, preferably by MRI, is diagnostic of this disorder. Additionally, the electron microscopy findings of the liver suggest that growth hormone deficiency leads to abnormal biliary cell and bile duct formation.
