How to protect your account from Phishing attacks

Phishing is a form of social engineering technique used by hackers to gather sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by posing as a trustworty person/organization. Since most online users are unaware of the techniques used in carrying out a phishing attack, they often fall victims and hence, phishing can be very effective.

With the dramatic increase in the number of phishing scams in the recent years, there has also been a steady rise in the number of people being victimized. Lack of awareness among the people is the prime reason behind such attacks. This article will try to create awareness and educate the users about such online scams and frauds.

Phishing scams usually sends an email message to users requesting for their personal information, or redirects them to a website where they are required to enter thier personal information. Here are some of the tips that can be used to identify various phishing techniques and stay away from it.

Identifying a Phishing Scam

1. Beware of emails that demand for an urgent response from your side. Some of the examples are:

You may receive an email which appears to have come from your bank or financial organization stating that “your bank account is limited due to an unauthorized activity. Please verify your account asap so as to avoid permanant suspension”. In most cases, you are requested to follow a link (URL) that takes you to spoofed webpage (similar to your bank website) and enter your login details over there.
In some cases, phishing emails may ask you to make a phone call. There may be a person or an audio response waiting on the other side of the phone to take away your credit cards details, account number, social security number or other valuable data.

2. Phishing emails are generally not personalized. Since they target a lagre number of online users, they usually use generalized texts like “Dear valued customer”, “Dear Paypal user” etc. to address you. However, some phishing emails can be an exception to this rule.

3. When you click on the links contained in a phishing email, you will most likely be taken to a spoofed webpage with official logos and information that looks exactly same as that of the original webpages of your bank or financial organization. Pay attention to the URL of a website before you enter any of your personal information over there. Even though malicious websites look identical to the legitimate site, it often uses a different domain or variation in the spelling. For example, instead of paypal.com, a phishing website may use different addresses such as:

papyal.com
paypal.org
verify-paypal.com
xyz.com/paypal/verify-account/

Tips to Avoid Being a Victim of Phishing

1. Do not respond to suspicious emails that ask you to give your personal information. If you are unsure whether an email request is legitimate, verify the same by calling the respective bank/company. Always use the telephone numbers printed on your bank records or statements and not those mentioned in the suspicious email.

2. Don’t use the links in an email, instant messenger or chat conversation to enter a website. Instead, always type the URL of the website on your browser’s address bar to get into a website.

3. Legitimate websites always use a secure connection (https://) on those pages which are intended to gather sensitive data such as usernames and passwords, account numbers or credic card details. You will see a lock icon in your browser’s address bar which indicates a secure connection. On some websites like paypal.com which uses an extended validation certificate, the address bar turns GREEN as shown below.

In most cases, unlike a legitimate website, a phishing website or a spoofed webpage will not use a secure connection and does not show up the lock icon. So, absence of such security features can be a clear indication of phishing attack. Always double-check the security features of the webpage before entering any of your personal information.

4. Always use a good antivirus software, firewall and email filters to filter the unwanted traffic. Also ensure that your browser is up-to-date with the necessary patches being applied.

5. Report a “phishing attack” or “spoofed emails” to the following groups so as to stop such attacks from spreading all over the Internet:

You can directly send an email to spam@uce.gov orreportphishing@antiphishing.org reporting an attack. You can also notify the Internet Crime Complaint Center of the FBI by filing a complaint on their website: www.ic3.gov.

Facebook Expands Safety & Security Tools

Just a day after security firm Sophos sent Facebook an open letter addressing privacy issues, Facebook has introduced a suite of new safety features.

While the social network did not satisfy the letter’s requests to make privacy the default, create a vetting process for app developers and turn on HTTPS automatically, it did come through on the promises it made in an announcement at President Obama’s White House Conference on Bullying Prevention last month. Here’s what’s new:

Two Factor Authentication: This is a new feature that will be turned off by default. If you turn it on, Facebook will ask you to enter a code anytime you log in from a new device.
Improved HTTPS: Facebook added HTTPS support in January, which makes it harder for someone on a public WiFi network to hijack your data. Now if you start using a non-HTTPS application while in HTTPS mode, Facebook will automatically switch you back to HTTPS mode when you’re finished.
Expanded Social Reporting Tool: Facebook’s new social reporting tool brings community members into the mix when dealing with bullying or other violations of Facebook’s terms of service. The features allows users to send a private message to the person who posted the offensive content or — if they want to report the content to Facebook — to include trusted authority figures as contacts in the report. Previously, the feature was only included for photos and wall posts. Now it is available on profiles, pages and groups as well.
Family Safety Center redesign: Facebook’s safety center got a makeover that highlights the site’s safety philosophy, community, and tools and resources like account settings. As in the previous versions, resources for Parents, Teachers, Teens and Law Enforcement are also highlighted. Facebook wrote on its official blog that it also plans to add a free, downloadable guide for teachers who want to use social media in the classroom. Considering that most schools block Facebook on their computers, we’re curious to see what the guide suggests.

Over 10 Million Scammed On Facebook

Spammers have invited over 10 million Facebook users to fake events in yet another attempt to generate income from online survey scams according to a report by the IT security and data protection firm Sophos. Even as we file this report, the scam is in progress and several thousand unwitting Facebook users are falling prey to it.

One of the event known as "Who blocked you from his friend list?" has already tricked over 165,000 people into signing-up, with an astounding 10.3 million users still deciding whether or not to respond. Scammers embed instructions into the 'More info' section of the event's summary and this convinces Facebook users to unwittingly visit the webpages for online surveys or competitions, which are a source of revenue for the scammers by means of commission. Sometimes, users are asked to provide a mobile phone number, and if the user is naive enough to provide it, he/she will most probably end up getting signed up for an expensive premium rate service.

Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos, Graham Cluley said, "These spammed-out event invitations and links to survey scams are one of the biggest nuisances on Facebook right now, impacting millions of users every day. It would be great if Facebook was being more proactive in shutting down these obviously bogus events, as currently it's far too easy for the scammers to fill their pockets through schemes like this."

In case you are affected by this scam, then you must cancel your reservation for the event. You must also notify your friends that you have shared a bogus link with them and/or invited them to a fake event. In case you have submitted your mobile phone number, you must contact your mobile service provider and inform them to keep any bogus charges from appearing in your mobile account.

The moral of the story is that Facebook users must beware of such suspicious events and think twice before accepting invitations from an unknown source.

Not long after the last FIR from Lucknow against Facebook for an anti-Gandhi group, comes another one aimed at the social networking website; this time for "instigating communal passions" and denigrating Indian gods.

"EVERY HINDU MUST SHARE THIS POST ON HIS/HER PROFILE"

An FIR was filed in Meerut against the social networking website by a social activist alleging that a Facebook profile lampoons Indian gods with an image

of the deities titled ''3 idiots'. Apparently, the profile is one amongst a spate of profiles poking fun at Islam and Hinduism as a part of ongoing online war between the proponents of the religions.

The FIR cites section 66 A of the Information Technology Act 2000, and expresses fears about the profile causing riots all over India. The creator of the profile has reportedly said that the profile will not be taken down unless similar profiles parodying Islam are taken down. Well, it looks like we have a Mexican standoff between religious fanboys over here. Even if this does lead to rioting, this won't be the first time Facebook has achieved the feat.

The very anonymity and freedom of speech provided by the Internet makes such pages inevitable. It's therefore wiser not to feed the trolls, instead of taxing our already strained resources on wild goose chases. Facebook too isn't too eager to please our conservative Indian sensibilities, especially because the western civilisation is rooted deeply in their respect for freedom of speech; even when it comes to lampooning religion.

Tagging a friend in comments is same as tagging some one in the status update. Just use ‘@’ sign followed by your friend name and select the friend from a drop down list.

Its great feature introduced by Facebook and will help one to invite his/her friend over the discussion but one thing that’s bothering me is the notification bar. People misuse the Photo tagging with out giving it much concern leaving the Facebook notification bar in a mess with spam updates. God knows what this change will bring upon us.

3. Use Firefox Userscript – Mozilla Firefox users are having benefits of add-ons. InstallGreasemonkey add-on on the browser and then install this Userscript. You will not see the new theater viewer while opening photos / pictures on Facebook.

4. Google Chrome Extension – Google Chrome browser extension installation is very easy task. Install this extension on your Chrome browser to disable theater effect or viewer.

5. Another Chrome Extension – Chrome is having one more extension for this purpose. In case the above extension is not working, you can try this one.

First 2 tips will work on any browser as they are not browser dependent that means you can disable the theater effect on Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera etc. as well. Rest 3 are for Firefox and Google Chrome users.

Facebook gets Updated for Android Application

The official Facebook for Android application has got a nice update that will let you upload photos on your friends' walls. The new Facebook for Android update v1.5.2 will let the users add photos to groups directly from their phone. A number of bug fixes have been bundled and the app gets SSL layer security too.

The new update will bring the security layers to the app that was added to the Facebook web interface in late January. The update will now show you a camera icon when you visit your friend's wall or group that you're part of. Tap on the camera icon to upload the photo right from your Android phone and the photos get uploaded in perfect orientation.

The changes brought by the Facebook for Android v1.5.2 update are:

Added the ability to upload photos to friend's Walls
Upload photos to Groups
Photos will always upload with the correct orientation
Improvements to landscape mode
Improved security using SSL
Various bug fixes

Fix Folder Options Missing in Windows Explorer

Are your Folder Options not visible under Tool menu in Windows Explorer? It is quite common to see this problem and if you are one of the unfortunate one, don’t panic! You can restore it back by following a few simple steps.

There are 2 solutions provided as below, you can choose either one of them to get this problem resolved:

Solution 1: Edit registry

1. Go to Run, type regedit then press enter.
2. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer].
3. At right panel, look for a value called NoFolderOptions. Right click on it then choose Delete.
4. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer].
5. Repeat step 3 to delete NoFolderOptions entry.

Solution 2: Change setting in Group Policy

1. Go to Run, type gpedit.msc then press enter.
2. Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer.
3. At the right panel, look for “Removes the Folder Options menu item from the Tools menu”, right click on it then choose Properties.
4. Change the setting from Enabled to Not Configured or Disabled.
