A controversial topic presented by Mozilla (developers of Firefox) said that it was “disturbing” that Microsoft was being would change the default browser preference when Windows 10 is installed. I wrote a Twitter comment that stated Mozilla should “get over it”. Others said the same thing. I appreciate that Microsoft said they would leave this open for change based on user feedback. I like this stand by Microsoft and I stand by my own statement. Innovation and improvements based on user feedback and experiences should be a core goal of software companies. Microsoft has provided a new browser, Edge, and I think everyone should give it a test drive.

Helping people to perform basic Windows functions is something I need to know. It takes a bit of time and effort to negotiate the new Windows menus to find where to set the default applications so I set out to document and provide simple instructions on changing your Windows 10 default web browser back to something else, whatever it may be.

I like using Microsoft Edge, it’s simplicity, basic features, and speed. For example, I really like the Book icon on the toolbar that minimizes the contents of the current web page by removing extra assets (photos, videos, ads, etc.) and makes reading even easier and faster.

Setting Default Windows Browser

This instruction can be followed on all Windows 10 versions.

Click on the Start button

Click on Settings

Scroll down the list and choose “Default apps”

Scroll to find “Web browser”

Click the currently selected web browser, by default it’s “Edge”

Pick a browser application from the drop-down list

Close (X) the windows to save your changes

When you open your favorite browser enough times, they can recognize this frequent action and ask if you want to set the default. If this happens, it’s a way to set it, but we hope this instruction will give you the step by step so it’s not hidden to you when it does it.

This completes the instruction we hope it was helpful.

Reset Default apps to original system preferences

If you want to reset the default applications to the system installed preferences, click the Reset button at the bottom of the “Default apps” window.

Now that Windows 10 has introduced the new light-weight and fast browser called Edge, it has reset a few settings. We personally love the new browser and it gives a lot of slim and slender features and choices. Although we like it, we would encourage you to try Edge for a few weeks to see how you like it. These are instructions to help add a new search engine because it’s not intuitive.

These instructions help to do the following:

Register/add a new search engine

Set a default search engine

Remove a search engine

Prepare by loading a search engine to register

Open the Edge browser

The first most important step is to have your search page already loaded in an Edge tab if you are registering a new search engine, if you are setting a new default or removing, you can skip to the next section.

Click your mouse in the top “hidden” area next to the Refresh circle, this is where prior browser text boxes are located. When you blindly click in that area, the URL/Search text box will appear. As a note: we haven’t really liked this “hiding” of the URL/search box, but it does make the page look more simple.

In the URL/Search box type the search page of your choice and load it, repeat this step in a separate tab for as many search engines you want to register.

Here are our favorites (including Bing, but it’s the default already). Click the links below to load them in a new tab:

http://www.google.com

http://duckduckgo.com

http://search.yahoo.com

http://ask.com

and other search engine choices by Wikipedia

Manage search engines

This may be easier if you Pin the Advanced Settings to the right side of the Edge window area. This is done by clicking on the Pin in the top-right corner when you have clicked on step 3.

Click on the ellipses menu button at the top-right of the Edge toolbar

Click the Settings menu option

Click on the View Advanced Settings button at the bottom of the list

Find the entry “Search in the address bar with”, click the drop-down and choose “<Add new>”

A list of all search engines you’ve previously registered or recently loaded in separate tabs will appear

For each entry, click it and choose to Add as default or Add or Remove

This will take you back to the previous page, repeat the process starting with step 4

As we mentioned, it’s not very intuitive to have the search engines loaded in separate tabs first but we hope this is a worthwhile instruction.

As we are learning the new EC2 Amazon Cloud Services, I am compelled to post a “how to” when setting up and connecting to an AWS EC2 SQL Server box. This will answer many questions for others so they can get around the few issues that will creep up when Launching a new EC2 SQL instance. This same information can be used for other server launches too.

Steps to Allow Access

Open the SQL Server Configuration Management application, 1) start SQL Services and set to start automatically, 2) start SQL Browser and set to start automatically; these are not started or set to start automatically when a new AMI instance is launched

While in the SQL Server Configuration Management application, go to the node, Network Protocols and find the Dynamic TCP port under the IP ALL section. Make note of the port to be used later.

Open the same following ports in the Windows Firewall:

TCP <dynamicport> (from step #2)

UDP <1434> (for the SQL Browser Service)

In the EC2 AWS Security Group of the server add the following ports:

TCP <dynamicport> (from step #2)

UDP <1434> (for the SQL Browser Service)

Turn off EC2 server hostname naming from the EC2 Administration Services application, rename the server according to your own server naming standards in the Computer | Properties panel, restart the box

Accessing the Server through SSMS

It’s important to note that there are four different ways to access the EC2 AWS SQL Server box from your local machine. To connect to a SQL Server Instance it’s necessary to use the name of the server and the port. If a default instance is setup, then the port, by default is TCP 1433, but this is not the case with EC2 AWS AMI servers.

The standard method to attach to the database server from an application or SSMS is “[<servername>][<ip>][<instance>][,<port>]”

In order to use <servername>, you need to have some form of DNS setup, which is done automatically for an EC2, or you have done through Elastic IPs and your own DNS server (like GoDaddy). If you don’t have DNS, use the <ip> or <elasticip>

To access the <instance>, the SQL Browser Service must be started and the UDP 1434 port open in AWS Security Group and the Windows Firewall.

Examples

“aws.dns.server.name” comes from the properties of the EC2 instance properties. “ec2sqlexpress” is an example name of the SQL Server Instance. Using the IP must be the IP as provided through a VPC or the Elastic IP (not part of this tutorial). The port is represented as an example 411xx is not a real number, it must be what you find in the SQL Server Configuration Application.

Example 1 using DNS and SQL Browser Service: “aws.dns.server.nameec2sqlexpress”

Example 2 using DNS and port: “aws.dns.server.name,411xx”

Example 3 using IP (VPC) or Elastic IP and SQL Browser Service: “50.234.x.xec2sqlexpress”

Example 4 using IP (VPC) or Elastic IP and port: “50.234.x.x,411xx”

Other Considerations

There have been some statements that SQL Server can’t run on a micro. Well, that can be true for the big SQL editions like Standard or Enterprise, and my considerations would be 2048 (my recommendation) to start.

As for another topic, I’m always pinning my CPU’s and my RAM at certain values.

For another topic, I’m always pinning my CPU’s and my RAM at certain values, because all too many times do I find problems with keeping the default installation settings. This is to say that the default installation uses all CPUs and all RAM. I will put turn on CPU affinity and take out 10% of the CPUs, if you have 10 cores, I remove 1 or 2 for the OS and Networking services and other support activities to run. The same goes for RAM.

We started the night ordering great food, meeting a few of the entertainers, club talent, and club employees. This is a friendly group that likes to have fun and provide a comfortable atmosphere. The food was good and we sat back as we were thoroughly entertained by four comedians, and then the special, main entertainer, John Moyer.

John’s jokes were funny, modern, and very relevant to today’s events and culture. We met with John after and talked about great experiences and fun times.
The E Center changes its name to The Maverik Center. This happened on Tuesday night at about 4PM on June 8th, 2010. This will do well in Utah as the stores have provided an image to blend well with the Desert, Outdoors, and Activity based atmosphere of the state.Continue readingThe E Center Changes its Name

Last week, there was news that The E Center has changed it’s name. The E Center will now be known as The Maverik Center. I am personally very excited about this. It has a great ring to it, even though The E Center name has been around longer than The Energy Solutions Arena, the new name will help keep them from being confused. The Maverik stores have done well in Utah and blend well with the Desert, Outdoors, Activity based atmosphere of the state.

Regarding the name change, people are always up in arms about change and there are two sides of the coin on this; some like the corporate names and some would rather have them stay the name originally given to it. Some like the corporate names because the venue has better exposer, recongnition, and support; however, it can lead the venu to appear to be a big franchise amidst the community and looking more corporate. Taking on a private, neighborhood name makes the venue blend into the neighborhood with a style and “close to home” ownership of a personal, private, and community owned event center.

Which is better? Promoting and advertising a corporate business entity receiving corporate backing, name, and brand recognition. Or promoting a community, neighborhood, and family event center, with a risk of greater attention.

This also means that I have a new title, as “The Head Photographer of The Maverik Center”.

Ever have one of those days when everything turned upside down on your coding commits into SVN and you felt it would be best to rollback all your changes to a previous revision? That’s possible in SVN, but it may not be as clear about how to do as you might think, or have found out. After finding a great article response about clarifying some of the features in SVN, I was able to complete my need to revert the code to a previous version. Thanks to Simon Large, who appears to be a contributor to SVN.Tigris. Because the article is aging, I wanted to create a new, more recent article that confirms the definition and steps to complete a “rollback” to a previous version.

Most of my information comes from this article, but I want to add my take on it and personal experience to enhance it. This information describes using the commands in the TortoiseSVN user interface.

Definition

Two types of actions to complete reverts in TortoiseSVN, are “Update to Revision” and “Revert to Revision”.
