The second our train pulled out they jumped onto the tracks and started to run after us. Its not easy because the ground is covered with tubes and cables and the tracks are there too. Your lungs fill with graphite powder and you can't breath.

The inhabitants produced a battered old mobile phone and with the help of their english speaking friend we managed to explain our intentions, simply being to have a look at the old plant and take some photos. They were perplexed, totally incapable of comprehending why anybody would want to do this. I can appreciate why.

Objekat 505 is the largest airbase in former Yugoslavia and today sits derelict and neglected, a sad fate for 20 years of work and $6b. Built upon this location to defend the nearby Celopek radar station, it was able to house 3 full squadrons in the 3.5kms of underground space.

While the predictable trips through nearby Belgium and France are loaded with amazing places to see, we craved something more exotic, more foreign and further afield. With a few points scribbled on a map we would set course roughly South East towards Bulgaria to see what the road might bring.
