Thursday, April 23, 2009

On March 19th, 2009, the University of Wisconsin landed on Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood to connect and to help. They were too many so a few headed to SJOM. Thier visit to SJOM proved to be productive since they took on the task of organizing our pantry and painting the stairs. The group was a lively one and we shared lunch with the participants. The students asked many questions and talked to some of the participants as they ate to find out more on the causes of homelessness.

SJOM's board, staff, and participants are grateful to the University of Wisconsin students and thankful for believing in our work.

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Israel Vargas

On March 18th, 2009, a group of 13 University of Maryland students came to SJOM on a volunteer program to help us with the beautification of our agency. At this time the bathrooms and stairwell to the second floor much needed touch up was taken cared of by the students in a professional manner. They arrived with high spirits and took on the task of making sure SJOM continued to be an environment worthy for our participants. At lunch time the group and staff got together to eat and share experiences.

SJOM's board, staff, and participants are grateful for their visit, for their work, and for their belief that SJOM is a place of renewal for every homeless man that comes through our doors.

With our economic situation now-a-days, a stable roof over your head and some guidance on how to deal with unemployment and job search was crucial to landing the right job. Many say this are the times in which a person seeking employment can not be picky. I say focusing on your skills will save you and the employers time, and help your probabilities of finding the job that is right for you. Mr. Baggett had experience in security and so ouir case managers focused on working with Mr. Baggett to focus on that field and helped him along with motivation, resources, and counseling.

We are happy to say that Mr. baggett found full time employment with Armaggedon Security. We want to thank this firm for giving Mr. Baggett the opportunity and congratulate Mr. Baggett for his efforts and new employment. Now we take on the task of finding affordable housing for Mr. Baggett. The lack of affordable housing will prove to be another challenge we must conquer.
