Although Studio One certainly had its fans, there's no denying that the Treasure Isle label ruled the rocksteady roost, although the tables turned with the rise of reggae. Across the latter half of the '60s, Duke Reid released hundreds of classic singles to avid audiences both at home in Jamaica and abroad, creating dozens of stars. So many of those gorgeous songs remain buried in the vaults, and sadly, Treasure Isle Showtime does little to remedy that lamentable situation. Once again, listeners are treated to a compilation showcasing the same gems already glittering in dozens of other sets, including the Heartbeat label's own. Is there anyone beyond those just discovering this music who doesn't own the Paragons' "On the Beach" and "Wear You to the Ball," the Melodians' "Come on Little Girl" and "You Don't Need Me," U-Roy's DJ version of the latter "Rock Away," Alton Ellis' "Girl I've Got a Date" and "Cry Tough," Justin Hinds' "Carry Go Bring Come," the Jamaicans' "Baba Boom," and the Techniques' "You Don't Care"? Thus, most readers already own half the songs on this 22-track compilation, even if some of these are alternate takes. That said, the "Rock Steady" version of "Carry Go Bring Come" is sure to pique listeners' interest, and a sublime version it is. However, the packaging is superb, with a fulsome booklet filled with contemporary photos and copious line notes; the sequencing is flawless; and it's particularly nice to have vocal versions, instrumentals, and/or DJ versions all lined up in a row. Of the less-familiar numbers, Ken Parker's bouncy "I Can't Hide," an early reggae classic, and Phyllis Dillon's gorgeous "Rock Steady" are welcome inclusions, as is Hopeton Lewis' superb 1970 Song Festival winner "Boom Shacka Lacka." Introduced by U-Roy with fabulous harmonies provided by the Tennors, this was a huge hit which surprisingly hasn't been compiled to death in the U.S. As an introduction to the label and its many gems, this disc is a winner -- arguably the best that Heartbeat has unleashed. But for fans, it may disappoint, and it's best to check the track list carefully.

Any compilation set featuring tracks produced by a producer of Harry A. Mudie's stature will inevitably omit some favourite tracks, but there can be little complaint about the selection of vocals and instrumentals gathered on "Rewind And Come Again" (Hits Of The Past)". Hand-picked by one of reggae's best producers himself and released on his own 'Moods International' imprint, this very entertaining cd features fifteen tunes from the early, formative reggae era. In those days producers like for example Coxsone Dodd, Joe Gibbs, Clancy Eccles and Derrick Harriott made the strongest and most consistent impact in Jamaica, but undoubtedly the most refined productions came from Harry Mudie. His riddim tracks -- often recorded at Studio One -- were distinguished for being as heavy as any, but also very melodic and well crafted. Besides that he worked with only the most professional of vocalists, who included John Holt, Dennis Walks, the Heptones, Ebony Sisters, The Eternals, Lloyd Jones and the late great Slim Smith. The latter (along with his group the Uniques) is featured here twice. Both "Build My World Around You" and the major hit "Give Me Some More Loving", and also tunes such as Roy Shirley's "Good Ambition" and his cultural piece "Come Children Come", Claire Raine's lovers tune "I Want You", and Winston Shand & the Sheiks' "Life Is But A Dream", combine outstanding material, strong riddims and flawless vocal performances. Don't overlook instrumentals like Laurie Aitkens All Stars' sweet and heavy "Strong Back" and the wonderful "Raw Deal" by Carl "Cannonball" Bryan, because they are truly worth of hearing. All in all this is a worthwhile collection of tunes coming from the vaults of one of the most under-celebrated Jamaican producers. Ignore at your peril!

Los Viejos Tiempos de los 70s
En lo personal este' Disco es de echo uno de mis primeros, que escuche', entre el Dub y el Toasting
recuerdo cuando yo era adolecente' me llamaba la atencion, los digamos grititos de Dennis Alcapone ! sin saber que con el tiempo!.
Es uno de los Pioneeros del Dj Toast !! de igual manera Jah Lloyd aunque Lloyd asta la fecha esta algo desconosido ! apesar de' tanbien tener una trayectoria interesante desde sus unicios.

Este' Disco a mi pareser fue solo un acoplado,oh vaya , recopilando algunas grabaciones de ambos son de a mediados de los 70s asta a finales de 70s , este disco esta mas recomendado para los que gustan mas por el Roots Dub de igualmanera si te da curiosidad no tiene de malo escuchar algo distinto !!

Delroy Wilson began his singing career as a teenager at Clement Dodd's Studio One (where seemingly everyone in the Jamaican music business appears to have started out), eventually working with nearly every producer on the island, including Sonia Pottinger, Joe Gibbs, Winston "Niney" Holness, Keith Hudson, Leslie Kong, and Bunny Lee. As he matured, Wilson's voice rounded into a hoarse, smoky tenor that was as soulful a vehicle as Jamaica ever produced, and although he isn't as well known as later singers like Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs, his approach and phrasing influenced them all, even Bob Marley. This two-disc, 50-track collection covers Wilson's rocksteady era, from 1968 to 1978, and while it doesn't include early sides like his cover of the Tams' "Dancing Mood," it features a solid representation of what was clearly his peak period, especially his work with Bunny Lee, which spawned such classics as "Better Must Come," "Cool Operator," and "Here Come the Heartaches." Also worth noting here are the tracks Wilson cut with Keith Hudson, including the odd "Adisababa" (a repatriation anthem based on the melody of "House of the Rising Sun"). "False Rasta" (sometimes known as "Rascal Man"), produced by Niney, is another high point, as is Wilson's fantastic cover of Marley's "I'm Still Waiting," produced by Lloyd Charmers. Wilson was fascinated by Motown (as was most of Jamaica), and he recorded several of the label's songs, including the subtle redefinitions of "The Same Old Song," "Ain't That Peculiar," "This Old Heart of Mine," "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever," "Get Ready," and "Baby Don't You Do It" (which Wilson retitled "Can You Remember") that are included here. Sort of Jamaica's Marvin Gaye (or perhaps Al Green), Wilson was pivotal in moving the island's music toward its brilliant, skewed, upside-down version of American soul, and his warm, assured phrasing is the equal of any Motown or Stax star. This compilation, concentrating as it does on the singer's best years, is darn near indispensable in assessing his considerable talent.

Esto va' para la gente que' aun no estaba enterado de ello, el regreso de Jimmy Cliff, despues de tener una Ausencia durante 7 largos años , el año pasado nos presento su mas reciente¿ trabajo .

Q65 - You're The Victor / And Your Kind

Después de bastante tiempo de no pasar por acá vuelvo con éste post.

Les traigo a una de mis bandas favoritas del llamado “Netherbeat”; una de las bandas más grandes, en cuanto a fama y sonido.

Y no es que éste grupo de maniacos fueran los mejores instrumentistas. No, no. Todo lo contrario, y para demostrarlo está éste disco, su primer single. Editado en enero del 66 para DECCA.

Éste par de canciones son una clara muestra de su “sencillo” pero contundente sonido.

En la cara A agresividad y crudeza con “You're The Victor”

En la cara B encontramos “And Your Kind”, canción que en su momento no tuvo el impacto que el A-side, pero que con el tiempo se ha ganado un lugar en el gusto de los escuchas (No así en el de los integrantes)

Y bueno, si te ha interesado la banda lo suficiente , si te has quedado con curiosidad y deseas saber más.. He de recomendarte la lectura obligatoria. “Q65 - The Book” de Pim Scheelings. Bastante bueno y, ahora, editado en ingles. Entérate como se forma la banda, The Hague, la música, LAS DROGAS, l@s grupies, etc.
