Yuta Onoda is a painter and illustrator from Japan and has recently graduated from Bachelor of Applied Arts Illustration at Sheridan College, Canada. His manga-style characters and dreamy expression is undoubtedly Asian and adorably charming. He has been shaping his art aesthetic through various forms of media, finding new avenues to express himself. Thank you to Mr. Yuta for answering my questions.

Q. Do you have a process flow when producing an artwork?
A. I normally spend a lot of time on researching and sketching when I start working on a project. And then I move onto the final.

Q. To date, what is the toughest assignment that you have done so far?
A. I think every assignment I have done was tough but the toughest assignment I have done so far is the piece for the 10th Annual imagineNATIVE Film Festival. It was very hard to come up with the concept and turn the ideas into the image. The schedule was very tight, so I was scared if I could deliver the final on time. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on this project though!

Q. Is there any Asian or Japanese elements that you have (concious or unconciously) blended in your artwork that shows you are from Japan?
A. I think a lot of my works have liner elements because I grew up with reading a lot of comics when I was a child. It’s an unconscious part but I think this part kind of shows that I am from Japan (Asia).

Q. What attracted you to water color (actually Acrylics)? How do you describe your style?
A. I love working with acrylics because it dries faster. I would like to start using oil paints when I get a chance though.
I love to create dreamy images that almost tell you a story.

Q. Who are your favorite artists?
A. There are too many talented artists out there…I cannot really tell who are my favorite artists.

I appreciate looking at all the images that other artists have created.

Q.What are the thing that you would never leave home without?
A. Definitely my sketchbook. Sometimes ideas just pop up in my mind when I am outside and it’s really helpful to write ideas in my sketchbook.

Q. what do you think are the most important things one should have to become a successful artist?
A. It’s really hard to say because I just graduated from school and started my career, but one thing I know for sure is to work hardest.

I think making a lot of efforts is one of the most important things to improve your art skills. Nothing will get better unless you try hard enough.

Q. What are your future plans and projects?
A. I hope to keep creating both illustrations and paintings for the rest of my life! I am currently working on
some illustration projects and I hope to keep coming up with pieces I am happy with!

Remi Juliebø is a designer and illustrator from Norway. With a His artworks are heavily influenced by American rock posters and skateboarding culture. Hope to see more great stuff from his in the future. Thank you to Mr. Juliebø for lending me some of his time and all the best for future endevour.

Q.Do you have any formal training and art and design?
A. Yeah, I went to art-school and also had some time learning from a local art-painter (Roy A. Dahl).
Also I had three years of Graphic Design at the Westerdals School of Communication in Oslo, Norway.
But I’ve always had the need to create things with my hands. I made some goofy comics when I was in high school.

Q. How do you describe your style?
A. I would like to say that my style is timeless, but then I’m only kidding myself.
I get a lot of inspiration from American rock posters, and the aesthetics that comes with the music scene and the skateboard scene. Also I find it very inspiring to look at retro type and 50’s illustrations. So, I guess you could call my style Post Underground? Also I try to be a Jack of All Trades, but leaving a piece of myself in everything I do. I tend to get very lost in my projects, using a lot of time in details. Also trying to keep my integrity on a pleasing level.

Q. So far, have you been in a position that requires you to abandon your personal style in order to meet a client request?
A. Luckily, no, not yet. It has been a great couple of years. Of course you use your best judgement to please the client, but leave enough of yourself in it to keep the passion for the project up.

Q. What or who are your inspirations?
A. As I mentioned before, a lot of 50’s illustrations. Look at the backgrounds of Disneys 101 Dalmatians for example. Pixar art, retro type. Music, movies… Video games are a great inspiration. The music scene with album covers, posters and merch is a constant inspiration and the retro skateboard scene. Also, my better half always pushes me to do better, and comes with feedback i couldn’t live without. She is my greatest inspiration.

Q. Do you have any tools or gadgets that you can’t live without?
A. Who dosen’t? I need my sketchbook, and my mac. And of course, a scanner, among other things.

Q. When producing an art piece, do you have a specific step-by step creative procedure or you just do it and improvise whenever necessary?
A. Usually, it starts off with a rough idea, and develops from there. But where and how the idea comes, and how it’s being shaped from air to something solid is different every time. I have sketched on canvases with coffee, awaken in the middle of the night and drawn something down that I can’t understand the next day and therefore turn in to something else and sometimes I can start directly on the final step, skipping sketching because the idea is clear enough from the start.

Q. Have you done any exhibition before? Who you like to collaborate with?
A. I have had a couple of art exhibits, some with paintings, and some with printed images on canvas. I had one at last years By:Larm, a music festival with some large prints and shirts. I have one ongoing with paintings, and are currently preparing for an exhibit at a Sci-fi festival here in Oslo.
The list of people I’d like to collaborate with is to big to mention, but I have a lot of friends I wouldn’t mind working with.

In our ongoing series of interviews with inspirational people from around the world, today I would like to introduce Mr.Rodolfo Biglie, an illustrator, graphic and web designer from Argentina but currently living in Prague, The Czech Republic. Highly talented and imaginative, his works are oozing with freshness and professionalism. Thank you to Mr. Biglie for answering my questions.

Q. Where do you get your inspiration from?
A. I get it from thinking about how “normal” things can be different… From books, regardless if they’re novels or about science… From movies, Hollywood bullshit or documentaries… Everything is an influence.

Q. To date, what is the toughest assignment that you have done so far?
A. Managing both the Creative and IT departments of an international interactive advertising agency, for sure.

I was the head of production for Mather Advertures in Prague. Having to communicate in a second language with more than twenty other people who were also communicating in a second language was a challenge. I had to take and give
direction based on context and body language. It was a big learning experience, both professionally and personally.

Q. Who are your favorite artists?
A. Duchamp, Leonardo, Kandinsky, Pollock, El Greco, Rembrandt, artist from the Renaissance…

Q. So far, what is the most interesting project that you have been involved in?
We conceptualized and executed a multi?language web site and campaign for Avril Lavigne, the singer, for her fragrance, Black Star. It spoke to her community of fans, letting them interact with her and making them feel part of her world, regardless of what country they came from.

Q. Have you done any collaboration with other artist or company? Who do you want to work with in the future?
A. Yes, I work with a lot of different agencies in the Czech Republic and in Spain.

Q. What are the things that you would never leave home without?
A. I could never leave home without kissing my son and my wife at breakfast. If I leave home without my iPhone, I have to go back and get it, but I’m not angry. It gives me another chance to kiss my son and my wife goodbye for the day.

Q. Do you do an extensive planning before starting on a certain project or you like to just do it, improvise and add on new ideas while doing it?
A. When I get a brief, I do a lot of research on the needs and the goals of the project. Once I know what is needed, and what the framework is, then I can play around with the details and come up with something creative and effective.

Q. What do you think are the most important things one should have to become a successful designer?
A. You design for your clients ?? and the clients of your clients – it’s not only about you and your portfolio

Good design is an effective solution to a problem, issue or need (see above)

Your ego is fuel… but, without an engine, fuel is nothing but a smelly liquid… it can become your worst enemy… especially if someone lights a match…

Q. What are your future plans and projects?
A. My family and I are moving to Barcelona in the beginning of 2010. It will be a new cycle for me, both professionally and personally, and I am looking forward to it as it opens up the doors to new challenges.

(This interview was originally published on 11th February 2008)

A. Sejak aku kenal musik punk. Masa tu mana-mana band pun guna imej stensil. “making punk a stencil again”.

A. Memetik kata sahabat baik aku, “Graffiti is not hip-hop. If you call it that, then stop”.

Apakah antara ‘rule of tumb’ apabila memilih lokasi?
Lokasi pula terpulang.

Cirda Haryati, Manaf, Banksy, Sheppard Fairey[obeygiant], Jef Aerosol, Swoon, A1one, M-City, Josh MacPhee, Chris Stain.

A. Berdasar dari pemerhatian aku, ia sedang berkembang, cuma agak perlahan sedikit. Tapi kalau sekadar pengikut perkembangan, memang ramai, yang melakukannya masih belum cukup ramai.

Kalau hendak ambik kira apa masyarakat atau pihak berkuasa pikir tentang seni jalanan ini memang kita takkan buat apa-apa sampai bila-bila. Hendak tunggu sampai ia jadi legal(sah), mimpi la.

A. Aku akan sentuh tentang stensil sahaja. Board untuk stensil, paper cutter, spray can. Sangat mudah di dapati.

Q. Berapa lama persediaan yang diambil sebelum menghasilkan sesebuah grafiti?
A. Sekali lagi aku hanya akan menyentuh tentang stensil graffiti.
