This looks like it might work for me, but during the debuild utility mine stopped, saying: “debuild: fatal error at line 1357” then, I tried installing the libev4, but it said “libev4 is already the newest version”.

Hey Paul,

you should always use the latest version of libv8 available at the moment, because (like Chrome) it is a very rapidly moving target.

Moreover, when backporting software to stable debian releases, you may need to amend debian/control lowering the required versions to the highest available in your stable debian system. I have updated the article with these instructions.

Of course, this can fail, and if it does, you’ll need to backport the required dependency library as well, repeating the whole cycle.

Your article looks like the solution for my problem, but I’ve got problems trying to install nodejs with this technique. There’s no package libv8-3.1.8.22 at the moment. There are several other packages though:

libv8-2.2.24
libv8-3.7.12.22
libv8-3.8.9.20
libv8-3.4.14.21

They either have no installation candidate, or the following message is returned when building the dependencies with apt-get build-dep nodejs:

Build-Depends dependency for nodejs cannot be satisfied because no available versions of package libv8-dev can satisfy version requirements

Do you have got any idea what I could do now?

You could also look at nginx and its proxy_pass feature. It will save you grepping strace runs, and knowing nginx is becoming a must these days, you’ll also be able to allow/deny hosts, and your nginx.conf will nicely gather your settings in one place.

Hey! I just updated your script to make it work not only with master but any tracked branch one is working on. Also $ARGV seems to be nil in ruby 1.9.2 and so it has been replaced by ARGV.
