In the studio today... waiting for the rain.

We are supposed to be getting rain in the next few days... I can't possibly see it, the sky is clear with no clouds in sight. We really need it though, I moved the furniture around in my studio and from my new ironing surface I look outside and see how brown our grass has turned... it's sort of an odd site to see this lush red-ginger hover over essentially dead grass.

I'll leave you with a few shots from my studio this morning... I've been working on something new, trying to incorporate triangles and other shapes into the same composition. With my life as busy wife and mother, I don't always get the time to work peacefully in the studio. My creative outlet of choice in the little pockets of time that I do have is photography. Currently, I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel XTi, but I'm toying with the idea of upgrading this Christmas... I don't actually need a new camera, but I've outgrown my current one and find it limiting in so many ways. I'm on the fence, Santa has assured me he doesn't mind, I have a new camera all picked out... the biggest obstacle right now is me - Do I deserve it? Part of me asks, "What kind of question is that?" and "What are you waiting for?" Maybe you can relate?

But I digress... where was I?

I have a number of lenses I shoot with, my favorite being this wide angle lens. I'm also a huge fan of the Lensbaby, especially during the holiday season where colored lights from the Christmas Tree provide a glittering backdrop. For information on cameras, lenses, and the like I love Fred Miranda. I'm a huge fan of watching the "Buy and Sell listings" for purchasing equipment secondhand. And since I'm a Canon fan, their website is helpful as well.

For Photographic inspiration or good 'ol eye-candy, I'm partial to Chromasia, 3191, Photobird, Guy Tal, and this gem "A Walk Through Durham Township," which I'm absolutely in love with... makes me dream of living in that part of the world. Just click on the "best photos" tab and you will see, I dare you not to feel your heart skip!

Okay, there you have it! My photography roundup for the fall. I'm always on the lookout for new inspiration so I'd be happy to see what you like looking at. Someone sent me an awesome link... a stop motion movie made solely of photographs... very cool! So cool it deserves it's own post, so tomorrow, I promise to show you!

One last note: My partner Gail has a new quilt up today... I simply love it! I must add, watching her evolve has been exciting and her growth as an artist is apparent. I get ideas from her all the time and it's been nice tossing around ideas with her this past year. Check out her latest and compare it to work done earlier this year. I'm sure she would love to hear from you!

Work of the week #31

Would it be cliche if I asked "Just where does the time go?" I'm sure you are feeling it too - almost a fourth of November has come and gone and I'm left asking myself just what have I been doing all week! I purposely took a break from quilt-making. Not only was I feeling creativity blocked, but I knew I'd be busy with school activities, event planning, meetings, and appointments. More than once I felt a longing to return to my usual work with patches of fabric in plain fields of color, however there simply was no time for that. I had other things to do.

And just what do I have to show for my time away? On Monday a friend and I canned 47 pints of pasta sauce! Good Grief! Crazy, I know, but it's for a good cause. Our school will be having it's annual Holiday Sale next month and this is our contribution. I'd show you photos, but you've seen me post pictures of the process before. So I'll leave you with shots from another round of canning I did this week - Apple Pie Filling!

It's fitting that I start this month with a flurry of canning. November, the month of gratitude, and gathering, brings with it a renewed focus on cherishing the season's offerings. Despite living in an age where I simply don't need to stock up and prepare for a long winter, I still lovingly participate in this age old tradition. It forces me to slow down and be mindful... other concerns simply have to wait as I'm focused solely on the task before me. It brings me closer to others, sharing the work is always easier, and pleasant chatter makes the task at hand go faster. It fills me with a certain pride of having something to show for my time. If gives me something unique to offer when friends come to visit or in the case of this week, as a donation for a community event. It allows me to feel gratitude for abundance, something hard not to do when surrounded by fifty-pounds of tomatoes or baskets full of apples. Mostly though it transports me out of my everyday; working in the kitchen my thoughts drift to the countless others before me who did this out of necessity. And as I tuck these jars away in my pantry, I can't help but think how much more than simple sauce that these contain. Like a time-capsule buried years ago, these jars serve to remind me that despite our usual fall-frenzy, these truly are peaceful days filled with warmth and gratitude.

I'm published!! Island Heritage accepted one of my quilts for their 2010 Quilts of Hawaii Calendar. This really isn't my sort of thing, since most of what I do is non-representational work, but still it's a thrill to be included here!

The quilt that got in was one I did years ago after meeting Ms. Mel at Art Quilt Tahoe. I walked into the room where she had been teaching, because all week long there was a type of electric buzz about her class and I was curious to see for myself what the hoopla was all about. Wouldn't you know, she too is nuts about color and the work on the walls dazzled me instantly! Barely able to contain my enthusiasm, I inched up the the table where she was sitting and waited my turn to look at the beautiful fabric she brought with her and was offering for sale to her students. Trying to keep it cool and not sound completely desperate, I politely asked if I could purchase one of her silk pieces because somehow she had taught them to yell "Buy Me" when I looked at them. Of course she was ever so gracious and not only sold me a piece, but instructed me on how to use it even though I was not enrolled in her class. Thrilled, this was the first thing I worked on when I got home, a spiral, which sadly looks much better in person than it does here. N0w this quilt hangs on the wall in my studio and when people come to visit they almost always comment on it. It is a pretty piece, but hey, I started with nice fabric! Thanks Ms. Mel! Your magic lives on!!

Self Portrait Tuesday - My week away...

... from my usual work that is. I may come to regret it, seeing as how I've got six quilts to finish before the end of the year - a personal goal, which can easily be changed, but still a goal I've set for myself. No matter. I need this break from hand-dyeds solids, choosing instead to do a little play with commercial prints as well as more canning.

Yesterday I finished the (small) Mail Sack from Pink Chalk Studio. I don't consider myself a bag person, but I'm beginning to see why they are all the rage! This one went together quickly and doesn't it look fabulous! This form of instant gratification was so delightful, I made another form a friend who recently had a baby... I think I may have found my new "baby shower" gift! Feeling ready to tackle the "big boy" mail sack, I've already got plans for a third. This time with fabric from the Mezzanine line by Patty Young... LOVE IT! Ooh, and in case you were wondering, I found this photo collection of Mail Sacks on Flickr, which mine will be added to soon!

A couple of other things I LOVE right now... Little Folks fabric by Anna Maria Horner, which is now available in oil cloth! These would make amazing lunch bags!

...Pepe Romero music on Pandora...

... Tortilla soup from Rick Bayless... especially if you have authentic ingredients, like queso fresco, and pasilla chiles... good for warming the tummy on a chilly day. We "Americanized" it with Harvest Grains Bread from King Arthur Flour.

I woke up this morning to an absolutely frightening sight - fitting given what day this is - its my latest work mounted on my machine, only half way finished. It's scary because for the life of me I can't explain where this one came from or what it means for my work to have taken such a divergence like this.

While it can be said I did start with triangles in mind, and I inserted a couple of long strung-out triangle-like shapes, when I got to quilting the thing, suddenly it was circles that were on my mind. I love how these circles glide and twirl around, like little dervishes spinning across the fabric. Making them was like walking a labyrinth, only much quicker and less precise.

To be honest, I'm a little freaked out. Does this mean I'm done with my elements series? Is my work getting more wild and impulsive? Does this reflect a lack of discipline, this gliding all over the surface that I've done here? I'm not even sure I like this. I'm not even sure I know how to turn it into something I like.

I know why I did this... my life lacks a certain sense of freedom lately. I think maybe you can relate? Life is droning on... the flutter of excitement over a new school year, new after school activities, and a new season have all passed, now we are in the trenches of driving to and from activities, helping with homework, cooking meals, and walking the dog. Good grief, I should have better things to complain about!

Do you want a little cheese with that whine, Robin?

Alright, I'll quit. I'll finish this quilt as best as I can and perhaps I'll take the next week off. There is that new bag I purchased fabric for and have been wanting to make for some time now, and I simply can't ignore the fifty pounds of tomatoes my neighbor dropped off the other day. I'll drop the caged-canary song and focus instead on things I'm grateful for... this usually helps. I'll forget about losing my mojo for now and trust it will come back... it always does. If it doesn't I'd have some explaining to do, "Ah honey, you know that big studio we built and all the machines and fabric in it? Well, turns out I've changed my mind and I don't need them anymore."

Yeah, right.

The Beckoning of Lovely

I'm thrilled to report a favorite project by another artist seems to have taken wings. The Beckoning of Lovely started with a YouTube video titled "17 things I made," where Amy Rosenthal showcases 17 things she's created. Next, Amy expanded on this idea by making an 18th thing with complete strangers in a spontaneous public gathering on 8/08/08, at "The Bean" in Millennium Park Chicago. This event was documented in another video called "The Beckoning of Lovely." Now the project has since evolved into the making of a full-length feature film and more information can be found about it here.

Amy made this video, filmed on 9/09/09 as a sequel to the one made a year before, where she shows her gratitude by giving back a little bit of lovely. Amy's story and her work on making this world a better place is an inspiration to us all. Enjoy!

Work of the Week #30 - A Painful Look Back

This is last week's work, just a few days late. It frustrates me to be derailed from my usual routine. I do have a preference for things to be predictable and tidy, but I'm exhausted with trying to make things fall in line perfectly, so I forgive myself for showing up late here.

It didn't help that half way through this piece I realized I was using colors from the Eighties - neon greens and yellows, dusty rose and mauve. I'm reminded of mood rings, pet rocks, Bonnie Bell lip gloss and Robin Williams in rainbow colored suspenders saluting "Nano Nano!" These images kept on flooding back to me each time I approached it, making the work of finishing it seem like a chore. Now that it's done, each time I look at it I'm transported back to a time when my hair had that Farrah Fawcett flip, I had a crush on Eric Estrada and I wore white knee socks with stripes around the top. Ugh! Gag me with a spoon!

Maybe you would disagree... thinking of more contemporary images when you look at it... nothing would make me happier. It is after all a lovely array of autumn colors like the ones found in Ms. Mel's post about leaves today, and it does buzz with a certain blend of pattern meets imperfection.

Self Portrait Tuesday ::Kitty Update::

All is well with our little kitty. Yesterday was a visit to the vet for "his" first checkup. Yes, "Isabella" is an "Isaac," news which came as a surprise to me. Still, the kids call him "Izzy" or "Iz Whiz" and I'll continue to call him "Bella," because honestly, I don't think he cares.

I have to tell you about a conversation my daughter and I had. She asked when we could begin to let Izzy outside. I told her we have to wait until his second round of kitty shots and until after he gets fixed. Her reply, in all seriousness was, "Oh, you mean like after they give him a new foot?" Ah, out of the mouths of babes!

And just in case you were wondering, Isaac is about 14 weeks old, his leg is healing beautifully and each day he show us a little more sweetness and spunk! I am so thankful for this amazing little guy... he's brought us much love and we are blessed to have him:)

So I'm quilting away... thinking about my latest focus on triangles... wondering just what am I going to do next... asking myself, just how am I going to make triangles fit together in a fresh and exciting way...

...when I remembered that nature makes triangles fit together all the time! Check out these fractals, and this picture I took of a bizarre type of broccoli I long ago purchased because it was just so inviting:

So I decided to take a walk into my own garden, remembering we too have broccoli. When I got there I noticed not triangles, but there were drops of water to capture my interest:

Soon I was noticing drops of water on everything...

...on leaves...

...on clover...

...and on flowers.

Finally after minutes of allowing my mind to wander, I was brought back to reality by this bee, buzzing from flower to flower, reminding me to GET TO WORK!!

So that's where I'll be today, in my studio, buzzing around.

I can't say my triangle question is answered, but I sure had fun thinking about it!

This and that...

Good Morning! I had every intention on finishing a quilt today and offering something to show you, but then I remembered I'm "single-mom" this weekend (hubby's on a short trip), and our schedule is full. Oh yes, my "mommy memory loss" is alive and well... ahem.

We have many important things to do today... play with the kitty, help out at a car wash, play some more with the kitty, and try to deduce once and for all what brand of food the guppies enjoy... important work I tell ya!

Have you heard of Water Marbles? They start out small but when you add water they grow to be much bigger! Last night we purchased several packs of this stuff, all different colors and now I'm thinking this little activity will be worth several hours of fun!

On another note, my mother has requested something handmade for Christmas. Now I consider myself a creative person, but I might need a little help on this one. Just what should we make for Mom?? Do you have any suggestions? Also, I'm putting together a collection of quilts made from my fabric... ones not made by me, that is. If you have any pictures or have posted about your quilt please let me know! I've already seen one and I can't wait to show you!

Caution: Cute Kitty Ahead

Oh my, now I've done it! Remember the other day when I took the kids to the BooBoo Zoo? How I commented that it's a place sure to open one's heart? Well, whatever magic it is that they brew down there worked! While we were there we met this little kitty... awww ain't she cuuute! So cute in fact, I couldn't get her out of my mind! The way she looked at me, the way she played with us... I was spellbound, I tell ya... I was hooked! My husband said to sleep on it, but it was all too late... I fell in love the moment I met her.

We named her Isabelle... "Izzy" or "Bella" depending on who you talk to. She was found as a (very little) kitten out in Hana, a remote area on the east end of the island. Sadly though she was missing a leg. We are all guessing it was a rat or a mongoose that did it. Anyway, when it became apparent she needed more medical attention, they dropped her off at the refuge. She had the most pathetic looking bandage on her stump! I just crumbled when I saw this tiny kitty wrapped up like a wounded soldier.

Our house is filled with giggles now that she is here... "It's just what our family needed," was what my daughter said. I'm not sure about that, we don't actually "need" anything, especially another critter, but just the same, I am glad she's come into our lives. Even the dog can't take her eyes off her.

I'm afraid I've really done it now; I've joined the ranks of other bloggers writing about cute little kitties. I swore I would never go there! As a result, I think I just lost my last male viewer! I'll have to "man-it-up" somehow... talk about guy-stuff, scratch some unmentionables and swear a little. Maybe I'll drink a beer out of the bottle or something. For now though, just know we are all in love with this crazy-little, sideways-walking, finger-attacking, 5 a.m. rising, bundle of energy.

Tomorrow, I promise to show you what I've done this week! I'm sure you will like it!

What to do with six-inch fabrics:

Inspired partly by the view from my window, I chose fabrics this week to work on.

If you follow this blog, you would know that lately when I dye fabric, I've been offering a few bundles of fabric for sale. I'm touched and thrilled that this has been going so well as the fabric packs are usually gobbled up within a few hours. Makes me wanna rethink my day job! Kidding. Grateful, indeed... to those of you who purchase fabric from me... Thank you.

The thought occurred to me, just what does one do with a bunch of six-inch pieces of fabric? So my assignment for the week is to find out! I cut several six-inch'ish pieces of fabric and willed myself to do something with them.

Again the theme is triangles... I've just got to master that shape! Fortunately inspiration struck and now I'm on my way! I can tell from the way my stomach gets that feeling. You know, the one where it feels like you've swallowed a bunch of butterflies.... the fridge may be broken, and the car is in the shop, but in here none of that matters! I'm just closing the door!! Hope you too are having a fun filled day!!

:: BooBoo Zoo::

We took a trip to the BooBoo Zoo, otherwise known as the East Maui Animal Refuge, the other day. The kids love to go there and it's a great way for me to introduce them into the spirit of volunteerism. More than once I've taken the kids here and whatever funk they are in is magically done away with once we arrive. Helping out has a way of doing that... caring for something or someone that can't do it on their own is a great way to renew the spirit.

We cleaned out a few cages, and fed the birds, but mostly played and watched. It's as if they know that they are giving to us as much as we give to them.

The animals are happy and well cared for, the people who work here are priceless, and I'm thankful that we this place that not only serves our community, but also opens our hearts each and every time we visit.

The color of vegetation
Associated with nourishment, virility, newness, fertility and vitality.
It is the color of the unexpected, of good luck and bad luck, chance, inconstant love, ardor, jealousy and disorder.
Although it is found abundantly in nature, no plant contains pigments capable of dyeing fabric a vivid green resistant to sunlight and repeated washing.

Not sure why, but the color of today, at least around here is Green!

Work of the week #29 - Part 2

I was a bit delayed with my latest quilt. I had every intention on finishing it by now, but a certain young man really wanted to go camping with his boys, so I just had to take them! In a word it was fun spending time with him and his friends... hanging with five 13 year-olds is a skill to be sure! All in all they are pretty good kids, I didn't manage to lose any of them or start a forest fire, and I'm pretty proud of myself to have managed this on my own! The weather was perfect; a little chill in the air to keep us hopping, but not too cold... and not wet either. When we drove down the mountain, this is what we saw:

And the work, it's not finished yet, as you can see. I still have to tack down that faced binding. Triangles are hard! Well, improvisational triangles that is. I do like them though... they add a certain energy that the other shapes don't have. I noticed with this quilt I was drawn to use black... more than usual... must be the time of year. Isn't there something that says you can't use black until after Labor day anyway? Hey, have a suuuper weekend! Love ya!

Work of the week #29 - Part 1

This was sort of a last minute thing... dyeing fabric this week, that is. I did it for an upcoming project I'm working on. I'm pleased with the results, the colors are a delicious range of tomato reds, avocado, chartreuse, plums, navy, and pink, like the zinnia I found in my garden earlier this week.

Shishasana in the studio

Sometimes I feel like striking a pose, a yoga pose that is... shishasana - a headstand.... to gain a new perspective. That's how I feel about this one. It's a little frustrating that it isn't coming together with clarity... making me work a bit harder... I'm wondering whether or not this was a good idea. Can you just picture me standing on my head, staring at my design wall? My kids would have a ball with that one! Yes, one more thing to give them the idea that Mom has seriously lost it!

Fellow Maui artist Gabe Mott made this YouTube video about the Primarily Red show at the Hui No'eau. He was inspired by this show to do a video showcasing the work with comments about the color red as the audio. It was pretty cool how it came together, he interviewed visitors to the gallery and collected voicemail messages... it all happened so quickly, I was impressed! Of course I have to put in a shameless plug; my work is featured about four minutes in! Check it out, it's pretty cool!

Self Portrait Tuesday - Changing Colors

Despite the lack of deciduous trees around here, we have our own type of color change that takes place at this time of year. For the most part things are a little darker... the sun rises later and sets earlier... the clouds roll in heavier each day... rain sheets down making my house feel like a cocoon.

I tried to make the most of today's sun by dyeing another round of fabric.

Always it's red... my true color love... this time in response to those tomatoes I canned last week...

And cold ocean blue... cloudy day grey... beet salad purple... pumpkin orange... these colors reminding me of darker days and quieter moments to come.

The garden is a mess, but that's alright. There is still beauty out here, a rouge zinnia standing bright and proud...

Soon you will be inside little guy, joining your brother, adding to the decor, making us happy...

Blog Reflections

I've been a blogger for quite some time now. Originally it started as a way for me to stay connected with friends and family members, to document these quilts I'm making, and to join a community of other kindred spirits. Little did I know I'd be at it this long and I would have come this far! My heart swells with gratitude when I think about all the cool things that have come from my online journal. First it would be you wonderful people, having met you both virtually and (sometimes) in person; your comments and conversations inspire me and the friendships I've made here have made me a better person. The amazing opportunities that have come my way; things I would have never dreamed coming true... allowing me to dream a little bigger more and more often. My rekindled love for writing, and my "voice" if you will, forcing me to aim for authenticity... gaining a great deal of self confidence in the process. An improvement in the quality of the quilts I make and the pictures I take, surely in response to those moments when I shudder while looking at older work. And let's not forget, I've become a better mother, wife, nurse... person... all from the simple practice of self-reflection and from the many loving ways you share your life with me. Yes indeed... gratitude, pure and simple, indescribable almost... for the opportunity to share this with you... for the opportunity to grow... for the sense of feeling connected. So, thank you!

My current blog is almost a year old now... a change I made last year after feeling a need for something new. Now, with two older blogs behind me, I was eager to put them to rest, but before I did, I wanted to have them documented in physical form so that I could look back on my beginnings, and my children can catch a glimpse into their lives when they were little.

I looked around for a service that would do this, but for a long time none of the blog printers would work with blogger. This all changed a little while ago when I stumbled upon Blog2Print and long story short, I'm happy to say the other day my books arrived!

Immediately these became a hit in our household! I just love listening to my daughter giggle and gasp as she makes her way through her childhood.

And those Quiltantics books... oh my! Honestly I look back at some of the things I made, my earliest experiments with fabric dyeing, some of the projects I worked on... (gulp)... well, lets just say I'm glad to have moved on!

Just in case you are wondering, I'm not going to offer these books for sale... or at least I won't make them available. They are really expensive and I'm afraid some things are better off let go. Besides, after a while of reading this stuff it all begins to blend together... it's just me going blah, blah, blah!

I went to bed early last night.

Upon waking I noticed this on my bedside table... a tiny sliver of paper...

a love note really... left by a certain someone.

I want to remember this.

On another note: Some of you have tried opening the link to my old blog. I have to apologize for my mistake. I've retired that blog... I've been cleaning up my web-presence. For you curious minds, I'll reopen it just for a few weeks longer. I'll explain later... I have something exciting to show you!
