It’s so HOT! And my Air Conditioning went out. Yep. I’m gonna need a new unit. These things are crazy expensive. I’m going to try to get through the summer without it… but I’m pretty spoiled when it comes to cool air. This is good news for you though. In order to raise the money to purchase the AC Unit, I’ll be putting on a CRAZY sale on all my products. So, keep on the lookout for this announcement.

One more thing before you dive into this week’s sewing project… are you a quilter? What’s your favorite part of quilting? What do you like least or have trouble with? I personally LOVE to quilt and piece. And I want to know if I should be adding some quilting tips to this newsletter. So, let me know!

In this issue:

Sewing Tip #11: How To Sew A Grocery Tote Bag

Have you been inspired to go “green”? To start using reusable grocery bags and do away with the plastic and paper? This week I share with you a step by step project that will show you how to make a strong and reusable grocery tote. Make a bunch of these and have them on hand when you go to the grocery store!

You can also use this type of tote for any heavy lifting… use it for your beach or pool supplies… or fill them with your needle crafts. They’re also perfect for storing fabric and fat quarters. Install hooks on your wall, fill the totes and hang them. You’ll have instant fun decor and creative storage!

This sewing project requires illustrations, so I’ve posted the complete step by step illustrated instructions at:

http://budurl.com/sewtote

Ask Jenny T Now

While you wait for the next sewing tip, be sure to visit AskJennyTNow.com and submit your sewing question. Your question maybe answered in my next podcast.

Question from Martha: Hi Jenny, Have you ever used bump interlining? I have a pretty basic machine. I’m wondering if my machine would even be able to handle it. What type of interlining do you use to get the fullest effect? Also, do you know who typically has the best prices on interlining and lining?

Answer: Bump interlining is some pretty heavy stuff, but I think if you take your time with your machine, you’ll be ok. I recommend that you use a bigger needle, like a size 90 and increase the thread tension. I would follow my guide on getting the right thread tension… refer to last week’s newsletter or watch the video at www.HowToSewWithJennyT.com . You don’t need to go so thick with the interlining to get a full effect. Bump interlining is used for efficient insulation for extreme weather conditions and leaky windows. For most of my drapes I use a light weight interlining… which is easy to sew and still adds fullness. You’d be amazed at how little you need to get that professional fullness. These days, fabric stores everywhere seem to have lining and interlining on sale. I like fabric.com for online shopping. But what I usually do is browse the clearance bins at the fabric store to see what I can find. Sometimes you can find just the right amount of material for 75% off.

Question from Sheryl: Jenny, What would be good to use for weights to help hold the roman shades down?

Answer: You can use a 3/8″ steel rod, which you can find at local hardware stores or on DraperySewingSupplies.com

Question from Helen: Hi Jenny i would like to know how to make a customade kingston swag/valance do you have any either how to

Answer: I hear ya Helen! I don’t have a pattern for that YET. But it’s on the project list… stay subscribed and you’ll find out when it is released. It may not be this year though.

Question from Martha: Jenny, I’m new to your site and I think that you are a genius! I need help deciding which type of pleat to use. I’d like the pleat that makes my fabric look the fullest. My drapes will be interlined and the tops will be partially covered by a cornice. Which pleat should I choose? Or, does it make a difference? I’m going to hold off on my decision until I hear from you.

Answer: *Blush* Well… I would say genius…. but thank you! If the top of the drape is going to be covered, then I recommend making pencil pleat drapes with pencil pleat pleating tape. It’s easy to use and will neatly gather the top of your drape creating really nice fullness. You can find this tape at DraperySewingSupplies.com

Question from Kathy: How do you use crinoline for extra support when making lined drapes.

Answer: Crinoline is used for the heading of the drapes. It is used instead of buckram. When making drapes, you typically want to stiffen the heading of the drape so that it hangs nicely and creates clean pleats. You would fold down the top edge of your drape over the crinoline or buckram and sew across the top and bottom of the strip. Then hang and / or pleat as desired.

Question from Janis: i am trying to sew a balloon shade i can’t get it to form right i am making it to fit a window 81″

Answer: Not knowing exactly what the problem is… I will do the best I can to help you. Is the shade pulling in on the sides when you raise it? If so, you’ll need to insert a wood dowel or weight rod into the bottom hem. Is the fabric not swagging? Then you have your lift cords too close together. Are you making a pleated balloon shade? Send me an email with more details and I’ll help you out a little more on this.

Question from Cathy: I purchased you video about roman shades. My question is where to find instructions on a shades without slats and how to place the cord along the rings.

Answer: You can find these instructions at: http://www.simplesewingprojects.com/how-to-make-flat-roman-shades/

Question from Gail: You mentioned in one of the past newsletters that you would be producting a video on sewing slip covers for furniture. Do you have a date for this instructional video?

Answer: Yes, I will be. I don’t have a firm date… but my goal is to start an online class for it at the beginning of November. Once the class is completed, the videos will be available all the time.

Question from Catherine: Hello, I have some lovely silk curtains and would like to interline them do you have some tips for interlining curtains that have already been finished.

Answer: What I’ve done in the past is cut the interlining to the width of the drapery panel. The length should be from the bottom of the heading to the bottom edge of the drape. Fold up the bottom edge of the interlining 1″ twice and sew across the top folded edge. Lay the interlining on the lining side of the drape. Align the side edges. The top edge should be just below the heading. Fold under the side edges of the interlining about 1/2″. Hand stitch the side edges in place with a whipstitch. Hand whipstitch the top edge in place. To learn how to whipstitch visit SimpleSewingProjects.com

Sewing Tip #10: How To Read and Use a Sewing Pattern

If you’ve avoided a sewing project because you have to use a paper sewing pattern… fear no more! I’m going to clear up the confusion and help you to read and actually use any sewing pattern! If you want to watch me sew a skirt using a sewing pattern… visit www.SimpleSewingProjects.com and search for “skirt”.

1. First, let’s go over how to read the package of a sewing pattern.

Looking at the front cover of the package you will see the level of the pattern: Easy, Intermediate, Expert… This is a great way to know if this is a sewing pattern that will match your abilities or appropriately challenge you without making you want to give up. I personally always choose easy. They’re a lot faster too!

You’ll see the pattern number. It looks something like B23445. You can use this number to find the pattern in the catalogue files at your sewing store.

Sizes: There will also be a notation on what sizes the pattern will make.

And then the photo or drawing of the item to be sewn. You’ll usually see various styles that you can choose to make.

On the top flap, you’ll see a size chart based on your hip and waste measurements. This will tell you what size you will be for this pattern. Don’t assume that you are a size 8 for the sewing pattern just because you buy size 8 in the stores. Sewing patterns’ sizes can be very different from retail sizing. So don’t get caught up in the size… pay attention to the measurement chart.

On the back of the package you’ll see a notions list, fabric recommendation and the yardage chart. With this information, you should be able to get your fabric and any supplies you may need… like zippers, ribbon, etc.

If you’re a beginner, you can take the pattern to the person in the fabric department and ask them where there “fabric knits” are… or their light weight linens… or whatever your pattern needs. Then you can just choose the fabric you like in the section!

2. Now, let’s open the sewing pattern and review what you have to work with.

You’ll see a folded sheet of paper that will include sewing instructions. And you’ll see the paper pattern folded.

The instructions will tell you what pattern pieces you will need for the style you have chosen. You will unlikely use all pattern pieces.

Go ahead and cut out the pattern pieces you need… leave about 1″ of paper around the pieces. You can press your pieces with your iron… just make sure your iron is on a low setting.

The instructions will also show you how to place your pieces onto your fabric. This is very helpful because it gives you the most efficient way to use your fabric. There’s even a key to tell you what side of the pieces should be facing up or down.

Pin your paper pieces to your fabric and then you’re ready to cut the pieces out along the cut line.

Find the style you are making, and follow the sewing instructions for that style (or view).

3. Finally, let’s understand all those symbols on the sewing pattern.

Cut Line => The cut line is the outer solid line on the outer edge of the shape. On at least one side, you may see multiple straight lines running parallel to each other. If you look closely, you’ll see that each line has a size on it. Use the cutting that corresponds to the size you are sewing.

Notches => The notches are the dark solid triangles along the cut line. These help to accurately match seams. So, there will be another piece, that when you piece them together… the notches will line up. When cutting out your shape, cut the notches out.

Grain Line => The grain line is a long line that has arrows at both ends. When you place the pattern piece on your fabric, you want this line to be parallel to the selvage edge of the fabric.

Place On Fold => When you see these words and a straight line, you will place this line on the fold of the fabric. This will create a shape twice the size of the pattern piece. You’ll need to refer to the fabric placement chart to determine how to fold your fabric.

Button Marks => A large open circle shows you where to place your buttons.

Button Holes => A short solid line shows you where to sew a button hole.

Darts => Darts are folded parts of fabric… sewn to create a seam… typically in the waisteline of skirts and pants. Darts are represented by 2 dashed lines forming a V. There is a dot near the point of the V. When you sew darts, you will fold your fabric right sides together aligning the 2 dashed lines. You will stitch along the dashed line and end just over the dot.

Now, you should be able to work with any sewing pattern! So, try an easy one and go for it!

Ask Jenny T Now

While you wait for the next sewing tip, be sure to visit AskJennyTNow.com and submit your sewing question. Your question maybe answered in my next podcast.

Question from Cheryl: Jenny, I am trying to find instructions for making a top down / bottom up roman shade. do you have the instructions somewhere? I also want to know if you can put the cords on the same side. Thanks. Cheryl

Answer: I JUST made this video. I posted on the home page of SimpleSewingProjects.com. Putting the cords on one side is possible… you may want a deeper board so that you can install 2 cord locks… one in front of the other.

Question from Laurie: Hi, I am very interested in your Roman Shade how to, but I don’t see any examples with an arched window. I would like to make a shade for my front door, which has an arched window. Do any of your instructions cover arches? Thank you

Answer: No, the instructions don’t include this. But maybe I can briefly help. When planning an arched roman shade, the hardware for raising and lowering the shade starts below the arch. The rectangular part of the shade is the only functional part.

What I’ve done in the past, is measured the window carefully. From the top center of the arch to the window sill. From the bottom edges of the arch to the window sill. And the width of the window. I sewed my roman shade to the longest length first. Then, using my measurements, I drew the arch onto the shade.

I got bendable board… I’m not sure where you can get this in stores to be honest… you’ll find it with cornice making materials. I bent the board to the drawn shape and stapled the fabric to the board. Then drilled the board into the top of the window frame. You can install screw eyes into the board and just use a cord cleat for raising and lowering. Or you can install another board across the bottom of the arch to hold the roman shade hardware.

Question from Mary: I am making a very small roman shade for a window, 21 1/2 by 21. I have sewed on the tape with rings attached. The shade does not pull up properly with nice equal folds. Do I sew the tape down the center and attach the rings or do I sew each side of the tape and not attach the rings? I have made roman shades but not the soft pull kind. Please help. Thanks so much.

Answer: I’m not sure I completely understand the question. Did you sew through all layers of your roman shade when sewing on the tape? To sew on roman shade ring tape you need to use a zipper foot and sew along both sides of the tape. As long as the tape is sewn to the face fabric it should work fine. You could also just have fussy fabric and you’ll need to train the fabric to pleat.

Question from Minnie: Good morning, what can I do to prevent my curtains to pull up on the side hems? Thanks.

Answer: This is a very common question and problem. This can happen for a number of reasons. The #1 reason this happens is that the selvage edges are still on your fabric and they were not snipped or removed. That tight weave will definetly cause issues. Your stitch tension could be too tight. When sewing 2 different weights of fabric… lining and fabric… one layer always is stitched faster than the other. Causing the seam to not hang smooth and straight. This can be helped by using a walking foot when sewing the side seams.

Question from Valerie: What is the model and manufacturer of the sewing machine that you use in your videos? (the one with the hands-free presser foot lift)

Answer: I use a Husqvarna Viking - Sapphire. I’m not sure about the hands free presser foot lift. There’s a button on the front of the machine I have to push to lift the presser foot. I LOVE my Viking!

Question from Dayle: The vertical edges of my lined heavy-cotton pinch-pleated draperies seem wavy. Drapery weights don’t help. I’m guessing that the fabric must have been stretched in some way but I have no idea how I did it. How do I avoid this in the future and insure straight vertical edges?

Answer: See my answer above to Minnie.

Question from Duane: Hi, I want to sew reinforced edges to shade cloth bought from Home Depot. At the same time I would need to sew several pieces together to form a long 18ft x 10ft section. I do have access to a sewing machine, don’t make me do this by hand. Thanks for any help.

Answer: Ok… for those of you that don’t know, shade cloth is a vinyl type material that is used for making window shades… not soft fabric shades. Here’s what I do, when I need to piece. First, I align the cloth pieces side by side. Then, I use masking tape to secure the pieces. The tape goes on both sides. Just one layer of tape. Then I glue fabric over the front of the shade. I don’t use a machine at all.

If you want to sew instead… I would align the edges side by side and sew a zig-zag stitch down the seam. Keep in mind that you may struggle getting your cloth to fit through the arm of the machine… and you will be creating pin holes in the shade cloth.

Question from Ellen: Jennifer - On 4/22/09 I got a pattern of yours from ABOUT.com-Sewing, for lined drapes in a day. I am wondering how many curtain ring you reccommend for a window width of 183″? (which I know I double for the draperies) Is there a formula of how many inches per curtain ring? Thanx ~ Ellen

Answer: I always use the rule of thumb of 5 rings per fabric width. So for 183″… with 54″ wide fabric… you should use 15 rings.

To figure out how far apart to space them you’ll need to do a little math.

I would start your rings about 1″ in from each side. So, now you’re working with 181″. You’ll have 15 rings and 14 spaces. Divide 181 by 14. Which is 12.93. So, you’ll space your rings about 13″ apart.

During my current applique sewing project, I had the opportunity to try out a different type of fusible web. For my applique projects in the past, I’ve used a double-sided fusible web that has a paper backing. When I went shopping this time, I picked up a paper backed fusible web… but I looked at the price only. I didn’t read the words "Sticky Back" on the package until I got home.

CON: Ok… so here’s the problem. When I peel off the paper and stick the web to the applique fabric… it doesn’t do a great job of sticking. I envisioned it sticking like tape. But there’s really no stickiness at all. So, when I go to cut out my shapes, the web moves all over the place. This was a big disappointment.

PRO: Once I used my iron and permanently fused the fabrics together, the product worked great!

PRO: Price is $3.99 for (5) 9 "x 12" sheets.

CON:It would be nice to find this product in larger sizes in the store. You CAN get a bolt (12" x 25 yards) of this fusible web online.
(Iron-On Double Stick Fusible Web-12" x 25 Yards)

The product I’m used to using is a paper backed fusible web that you fuse twice. You fuse the web to the wrong side of your applique fabric first… this keeps the web attached to your applique fabric. Cut out the shape. Peel off the paper and fuse it to your main fabric. There a few different brands available and I’ll list them here. I’ve used Pellon in the past and was really happy with it.

www.SimpleSewingProjects.com

Thank you to all of you wishing me good health. That was super sweet and unexpected. It’s so nice to know that my readers are enjoying my newsletters and actually reading them! Ha! Yes, I’m feeling much better. Thank you! I am way behind on my videos, but I plan on getting caught up this week. I will let you know when some new stuff is posted.

In this issue:

1. What type of thread should you use?

2. Ask Jenny T. Now

3. What’s new in Simple Sewing Projects

4. Content Request

And now… on to this week’s sewing tip!

**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^**^

Sewing Tip #9: What type of thread should you use?

To make the perfect stitch, a few requirements need to be met. You need to have the right sewing machine needle. You need to have the right thread tension… and you need the right thread. The first 2 requirements have already been explained in previous issues of Sewing Tips. If you would like to read the back issues of Sewing Tips, visit http://budurl.com/sewingtipsarchive

I’m going to share with you 10 different types of thread and explain when and how you should use the thread for your sewing projects.

The video for this lesson is at http://www.HowToSewWithJennyT.com (** Ok, I was sick for almost 2 weeks, so there’s no video YET. Check back in about a week **)

1. All-Purpose Thread

You will this type of thread for most of your sewing projects. You can find it in 100% cotton, 100% polyester or a blend. If you are sewing stretchy material, use a polyester thread or a blend. For a stronger stitch, use cotton thread. If you’re sewing fine or delicate fabrics, use a fine/lingerie all purpose thread.

2. Denim / Jeans

This is a heavy-weight thread used for sewing denim. You can find this type of thread in the traditional jeans gold or in shades of blue. Use a topstitching needle with an elongated eye. There are Denim / Jeans needles available.

3. Elastic Thread

This is a stretchy thread that will create shirring. Put the elastic thread in the bobbin and use an all purpose thread in the top thread. It is recommended to only use this with light weight fabric.

4. Embroidery Thread

This thread is good for decorative stitching… and for machine embroidery. Embroidery thread comes in all kinds of weights, colors and materials. Make sure you use an embroider needle and embroidery bobbin thread.

5. Heavy-Duty / Upholstery / Outdoor

Use this thread for exactly what it says… heavy duty, upholstery like slipcovers and outdoor use. This thread is very durable and can withstand some abuse. Avoid cotton thread… and choose nylon or polyester.

6. Metallic Thread

This is a decorative thread made with metallic threads. You’ll find core-covered, twisted, flat and holographic types. Make sure you use a metallic needle… slow the machine speed… and reduce the thread tension. I recommend making some test samples with this thread before using it in your project. Metallic thread can be a bit tricky to use.

7. Silk Thread

Silk thread is available in several weights. Silk thread is a shiny thread and is typically used where you will see it… like on buttons, top stitching and decorative stitching.

8. Topstitching Thread

This is typically a thicker thread and is used to show off your stitch. Make sure you use a larger needle with a large eye and increase the stitch length.

9. Variegated Thread

These threads are a lot of fun and are designed to be seen. Use this thread for decorative stitching and quilting. You’ll find cotton, polyester, rayon and metallic in all kinds of sizes.

10. Wool / Acrylic

Use this thread when making blankets… and sewing wool. Because the thread is soft, you can use it for machine embroidery as well. Use a large needle. This thread creates a lot of lint, so make sure you’re dusting and cleaning your machine after each use.

In addition to choosing the type of thread, you need to check the thread size. Just like needles have different sizes, thread has different thicknesses. The sizes range from 12 to 100. The smaller the number the thicker the thread.

All purpose thread is 50.

Fine lingerie threads are 60 to 100.

Decorative threads are thicker and range from 12 to 40.

When sewing with thicker threads, increase the stitch length. Use a larger needle so that the thicker thread will fit through a larger needle eye.

Your question maybe answered in my next podcast or newsletter!

Question from Karlyn: Hi, I’ve just signed up for the $7 a month membership but cannot access the ‘custom curtain’ video which was promised for some reason. I wanted to view it instantly onloine and understood this would happen when I became a super sewer member. Please provide the link or URL for this video. Many thanks Karlyn

Answer: You can find your videos at http://budurl.com/howtosewcurtains

Question from Betty Ann: HELP..if I want a finished rod pocket drapery panel to be 80″ …how much of a rod pocket top do I give it…I gave it..1 1/4″ for the rod plus 1″ for easement and 1/2″ to turn under..with those measurements for the rod pocket top and my hem my panel is exactly 80″…I measured from the top of the rod to the floor and it is 80″…will my panel be too long?

Answer: Your finished drapery length should be the measurement from the top of the rod to the floor LESS 1/2″. This way the drape won’t drag on the carpet or floor. Your cut fabric length should be 79.5″ + the bottom hem + measurement around the pole + 1″ for ease + 1/2″.

What I like to do is sew the bottom hem first. Then measure up from the bottom the finished length. Fold down at that measurement and then fold under the raw edge 1/2″. Sew the rod pocket in place.

Question from Kim: On your video making roman shades you mentioned to reference how to estimate roman shade job. where can i find this?

Answer: I do? Ok… well, I don’t have a video for this. But I can recommend that you charge by the square foot or square yard for labor. This will help to easily charge more for large roman shades. I would start with $12 a square foot and then adjust your pricing as you become experienced with your time and clients. Remember, this is just for labor. Make sure you add on the cost of materials.

Question from Pat: Is there a special way to insert a zipper in a pillow? I’m thinking of putting it in just like I would on a dress and centering the zipper on the 5/8 inch seam allowance.

Answer: I have a complete video tutorial on sewing a centered zipper on a pillow at www.SimpleSewingProjects.com It’s the project of the month.

Question from Gloria: Everyone is going to think I’m stupid because I’ve been sewing for 100 years (almost) and can’t properly put a side zipper into a pair of slacks. I’ve read all of the books…ugh.

Answer: That is not a stupid question! Lots of us are still learning and sometimes struggling with sewing zippers and garments. Including myself. I do have a video on www.SimpleSewingProjects.com that shows you how to sew a lapped zipper. When sewing the side seam use a 5/8″ seam allowance. Baste where the zipper will go, and follow the video. It’s really very easy. There’s also a video for an invisible zipper.

Question from Gary: I WANT TO GET THE CLASSES FOR MY WIFE BUT YOURE SITE KEEPS SAYING I DONT HAVE THE PLUG- IN FOR YOURE SITE CAN YOU HELP THANKS-GARY

Answer: You will need the Adobe Flash Player to watch most videos. This is free at www.adobe.com Once you install the plugin, close your browser and reopen it. Let me know if this works for you.

Question from Veni: Hello, I enjoy your many helpful hunts and do plan on subscribing. Do you have a serger that you recommend? There are so many different ones and I am really interested in one as easy to use as possible. Thank you so much, Veni Hardy

Answer: This is the one are that I am weakest. I’ve played with my Mother-In-Law’s 5 thread serger (Viking) and it’s amazing. I am a huge fan of Husquervana Viking machines. READERS: Let’s start a discussion on recommended sergers to help out Veni and others. Visit www.SewandShare.com and post your Serger recommendations in the forum.

Question from Colleen: Hi Jenny, thanks for the emails and greats tips and info. Its been so good. I am attempting my first set of Roman Shades. Where do you get a roman shade rod (for the top)? Thank you:-))

Answer: There’s really no readily available “roman shade rod”. If you want to make a rod pocket roman shade, you will get a drapery pole that you like. And then behind the shade you will install the hardware for raising and lowering the shade. I highly recommend you visit www.MakingRomanShades.com or join www.SimpleSewingProjects.com You’ll find a complete step by step tutorial, both illustrated and video for making and installing a roman shade.

Question from Valerie: I sure hope this finds you feeling better. Take Care! This is not a sewing question, but I have missed Sewing Tips Newsletter #1 & #5. I have gone all over the Web Sight, but I can’t find out how to get it. Can you help with this. I have all the rest, but I hate not having the ones I have missed. Thank You, And…thanks for your web sight. It is about the only one I go to now!

Answer: You can find the newsletter archives at: http://budurl.com/sewingtipsarchive And thank you for your kind words. I’m feeling much better, thank you!

Question from Sandra: Hi Jenny, I made Roman Shades using battens and blackout lining. Now that they’re hanging, I can see sunlight coming through the stitches where I sew the rings. What can I do so that these little holes don’t get bigger? And, how can I avoid this in my next Roman Shade? Thanks, Sandra

Answer: Yeah, those little holes can cause light leak with blackout lining. On the back of your shade, dot some fabric glue over each hole. This will fill in the holes and help keep the light out.
