In the past, I’ve written plenty of opinion about a key thing in the Wrestling world of today, the Pay Per View (PPV). Going back to the original Wrestlemania, Vince McMahon definitely pushed the bar to make PPV a viable, needed option to not only push storylines, but to garner huge influxes of monies into the coffers of whatever company was using them. Look around the landscape, and you see their value – Boxing, MMA, Wrestling – they all use PPV to get their product to new heights.

Thing is, PPV over the past few years the market has become saturated with these events. Fans – especially in these Economic times – are having to pick & choose who the support with their viewing dollars. The WWE reported last November they would drop one – which they have, but then went on to say they’d also increase prices on the rest of their fare, which they did.

Net change? Zip, or more accurately, a net loss of buys. While one increased, the rest have fallen. It’s a trend that WILL continue unless someone out there actually gets it through their head – quality is FAR better than quantity, and the Economy is not great.

Why do I revamp this thought? The WWE recently published on their Website an article about the 25 Greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time. While reading this, I was immediately struck by one notion – the best on the list all held their titles for an extended amount of time – so extended in fact that it makes the reigns of Today’s champs pathetic in comparison. What happens today whenever someone has a belt a long time? Fans go crazy because they don’t know if the holder will retain or lose the title – it pushes the business, making people WANT to watch to see when – or if – the event will occur.

As I said in the former article about this:

Back in the days of 4 to 5 per year, Vince and Company were able to write ‘epic’ story arcs that riveted viewers not only to their PPV offerings, but to their weekly shows as well. One such arc, which created the Mega Powers (Hogan and Savage) played out over 13 months from March of 1988 to April of 1989. At that time, there were only 4 “major” PPVs (Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series) and the storyline pervaded the atmosphere. People were hooked, and this pushed them to purchase each of the 4.

This just can’t happen with 13 PPVs in a year. What was an ‘epic’ storyline then would last a mere 4 to 6 months at most today, leaving NINE more to have to write for, and try to attract viewership. It pushes the talent, writers and even road agents to their limits, trying to keep us entertained. And while everyone is stretched to their creative limits – the backlash is that people who may still purchase 4 to 6 PPV are focusing only on those that mean something to them, and that includes the competition.

It really IS a no-brainer. Lower the amount of PPVs per year, increase the duration of title reigns – and down the line you make it so viewers will WANT – no, they will HAVE to purchase each PPV in order to follow the story to the finish. Look to your history WWE – you know how to build stars, you know how to make money – are you doing that today? Are your titles as prestigious as they used to be, or are they becoming mere props?

Now, I know going back to 4 – even 6 – is never going to happen. However, consider 8 as a number. What this would instantly do for you is give you (WWE & TNA alike) the ability to throw some prestige onto those title runs. It would make your Champions stronger in the eyes of fans, and make people nearly HAVE to buy each PPV simply because people would no longer be able to predict a title change (Side note, doing a simple search for predictions you can see that fans are pretty dang accurate about this nowadays).

What’s better – buying 5 or 6 (Out of 13) per year, or getting someone so hooked they buy all 8? Run your cost analysis based on that, and tell me that everyone wouldn’t win from that scenario. Even better, that makes it so fans can afford more merchandise, so it extends into every operation of the business – all from simply stepping back and giving fans Champions they can believe in again.

We want to see extended reigns. We may not all KNOW we want that. but that’s the case. Part of that process is making it so we aren’t so overexposed to PPV that we expect a title to change hands (roughly) every other show.

This time though, we have a real “Pot calls kettle black” situation. Read this amusing snippet from one of the more verbose writers:

“Torrie Wilson posted the following on her Twitter this evening… Loving my life outside of wrestling guys!!! ..that last response was related to Hogan tellin Stern im calling tna for work..im not! Note from Ryan Clark: That’s classic Hogan for you. Don’t ever trust one word that man says.”

Wow. Someone who day in and day out spreads false information, twisted stories and frank, outright lies can say this? Even worse, I can guarantee he wrote this with a straight face, believing every single letter as he typed it. Not hard after all – Hogan does tend to make statements that while not lies, are twisted to suit his (Or those of his company) needs.

Thing is – that’s hype. he’s doing HIS job, trying to promote not only TNA but himself in the process. That’s one of the main reasons Dixie hired the man, he can sell to the marks. So while he stretches truth, makes stuff up – and yes, lies – he is doing it from a foundation of trying to help the business. Unlike our “Journalist” friends.

See, the above snippet illustrates the actual feelings of these supposed Wrestling fans who are posting ‘News”. You’d think they’d try to actually find out if something is true because they want to help – instead like the Enquirer, they post first and pray that nobody sues them. Even worse, even when they are proven flat wrong, they continue to spread the misinformation for at least several more days, NEVER issuing a retraction or – as they should – an apology.

Take as case in point the JR – TNA situation. For several weeks now, it has been “reported” that JR met with TNA execs in regards to a position with the company. Problem is, JR has stated repeatedly in places like his Blog & at the CAC Reunion, that he has NOT spoken with TNA in general, and with certain people in specific. Anyone who knows JR will tell you this – if he is being evasive, he will tell you he can’t comment – he would NOT lie about his situation.

Even funnier, the ‘reporter’ actually cut and paste from JR’s blog several times where he says the above – that he had no contact with TNA – yet STILL insisted on reporting afterward that JR was doing so. It’s irresponsible, misleading – and even actionable – if JR were the type to want to sue.

Perhaps that’s the reason why all those posts have mysteriously vanished in the last day or so. I got fed up and mailed the ‘reporter’, pointing out his factual errors – I called him on his BS. Hopefully (But I doubt it) this will open his eyes to the nature of what he does – if even ONE of these ‘Journalists’ gets a clue, a movement of truth and accuracy can get started.

Being heavily reported now is the release of 7 WWE employees including Mickie James. Thing is, it went from there. had they stopped with news – simply reporting the fact, and moving on – I wouldn’t be jumping on PWInsider right now. However, in classic form, we now get to read “The real reason Mickie was fired.”

You see, it seems those bastions of fact and literary pulchritude – AKA “Sources” – have told PWI (Discretely of course) that Mickie “should have been more professional in her dealings with WWE.” Anyone that knows Mickie sees immediately the BS in that statement – this is a person who goes above and beyond to do her level best every single show – and beyond. It’s been that way since her Indy days. Of course – there’s another “Sources” who is pushing the Weight issue as the cause.

But this makes me wonder – is “Sources” so jealous that they have to point at someone’s figure? I mean, really now, “Sources” – how much do YOU weigh? Something tells me you’re either larger than me (And I’m no middleweight), or you’re so rail thin that you make supermodels look well fed. Please, take a clue on professionalism from Mickie herself:

“Thank you James Gang! I just want to say its been a beautiful journey… Wwe has been a childhood dream come true & I have loved every step… There is not a moment I would change for the world… It breaks my heart but the world doesn’t stop turning.. I’m grateful for all my friends, family, loved ones, and fans who have supported me along this wonderful ride. To all the guys and gals I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the ring with… We made some magic! History… Memories to last a lifetime… Thank you… I love you all with all my heart! Every chapter has its close… The next one”

Thanks, Mickie/Alexis – that’s all we need to hear – the real fans anyway.

She wasn’t the only release however – and let’s be real here. Once you aren’t getting a push, when there’s nothing on the sheet for you – there’s always a chance you’re about to go. All the talent in the world doesn’t mean you’re untouchable, as Shelton Benjamin found out. Thing is, the world keeps moving for them – and the cream always rises to the top. if they are that good – and some of them are – they will be back, if not the WWE then TNA – thank goodness we have a Monday Night War again.

Here’s another tidbit – “the Miz makes a huge mistake!” First off – this is news? Second – thanks ever so much for pointing it out “One who shall remain nameless for their safety” – now Miz will gain Twitter followers who are just waiting for the NEXT time he tweets his number.

Hey – it happens.

Those of you who have followed me since my days of running JCPW and MarkingOut.com know that I’ve always been a huge fan of the Cauliflower Alley Club, and the things they have done for the business. For some reason though, it took me over a decade to get up the nerve (And time) to actually join the CAC, and go to an event.

After my 2nd, I now wonder WHY I was such a jabroni.

After joining the CAC, I immediately felt at home during my first Reunion. It didn’t matter that I was from the Indies – we’re all one big, extended family. Just like all families, there are those you get close to, and those you barely know – but deep down, push comes to shove – they are there if needed. That sums the CAC up in one sentence.

The thing is, no matter who you are in the business – from major Superstar all the way to some guy who puts up the ring, each and every one of us is vitally important. We are the legacy of this business, and in a lot of cases, it’s future. The advice being given this year by talent from practically every generation of the business – absolutely free and without ulterior motives – is beyond value. The road stories teach a lesson, the jokes teach a lesson – even just listening while old friends reconnect is a lesson of sorts.

I was honored and humbled at my 2nd Reunion to be allowed to sit in on one of the Seminars given each year. When I offered my services to Dave (Dr David Reiss of DMRDynamics), I was fully expecting – and willing – to do nothing more than lug around his equipment. This comes from years of lugging a ring around and setting it up – you come to understand. NO job is too small to be of use, and it shows the proper respect to those who came before you – they did it, so should each and every person wanting to be in the business. Too many people going through training at any number schools around the world seem to fully believe that once they are done, they can ‘be a star’ and be above all that. They then wonder WHY they aren’t getting the bookings they want – read above folks, that’s why.

My first year at CAC, whenever one of the guys needed a seat and I had one – I offered mine. This simple act showed them that *I* had the respect for them that engendered & encouraged them to open up – I knew my “place” in the pecking order, so I was worth passing on what they knew. I soaked it up like a sponge, filing away things I didn’t know, and feeling proud at the stuff I did. This just illustrates what the ‘Ring of Friendship’ can do for you, something so small as a chair can lead to the key that smartens you up to the next level.

Forgive my going off track there, but it’s important!

Also sitting in on the Seminar I was involved with was Matt Riviera. Many people may recognize him from the VH1 show “Megan Wants a Millionaire”, but others will certainly know him from his CAC attendance and his work in the Indies. He’s (at his age) another of those with lessons to teach – with the possible exception of “How not to live to excess” or “How to be humble.” In my (not so) humble opinion, he’s deserving of the CAC “Future Legend” award. Heck, I may nominate him myself.

Speaking of value for workers – titles of Seminars this year included “Drawing Heat” and was headed by Ted DiBiase & Harley Race & “What it takes to make it” given by Amazing Kong, Cheerleader Melissa (with an assist from Ross Hart). Seminars like this when presented anywhere else are going to cost you anywhere from $50 to $500 – EACH. In 2 days, you get an education, from masters of what they do, for the price of a year’s membership in the CAC ($25) and tickets to the Dinners ($100). If for no other reason than that – CAC membership is valuable. but there’s so much more.

Now don’t get me wrong. The CAC Reunions are open to all members, including Fans. After all, without Fans, all we do would seem silly – men & women rolling around in underwear. OK, maybe the women doing that would be OK without Fans – but I’m 100% certain it would have them regardless. Simply put, unlike a Wrestlefest or the like, while you CAN grab a quick photo with one of your favorite workers, or pick up some one of a kind merchandise in the gimmick room, the main focus here is on reminiscing about times both good & bad, feast & famine alike. Kayfabe still exists to some extent here – as was illustrated (Quite succinctly) by Executive VP Karl Lauer at the Banquet when he announced “This isn’t a fan fest, we’re all workers here.” Yes, Fans can be among those lucky enough to be in that room – but it’s not a time to mark out, or pester someone like Jim Ross for an autograph. They will (and DO) pose for you any time else – the banquet is special, and like above, needs to be handled with Respect and tact.

The Awards went to the like of Ted DiBiase, Dan Severn – and Good ol’ JR, Jim Ross. It would take far too long to tell you about their speeches, or their natures – suffice to say that they all are true gentlemen & legends, and deserve all they have achieved and received. We all promised not to give the “Internet Journalists” (AKA Assclowns) fodder, so I can’t tell you WHY an entire room of 442 people were laughing so hard they couldn’t breathe – but I now have memories I will treasure, and will look on at least one of them with new eyes. Too funny.

Quick aside – many of the folks at CAC asked me about my Promotion. The one I associate with the most (and am proudest of) is Just Cause Pro Wrestling, now in hiatus. It had been created to offer a humanitarian service – a way for us to give back to the communities that support what we do. All proceeds after expenses (And yes, that DOES include paying the boys) were donated to whatever local Charity we were working for. I’m proud to say we have given thousands of dollars to entities like “Relay for Life” and Boy’s Club – and I look forward to the day when I can dust off the Logo and help others once again. On that note – any organizations wishing to use the JCPW name and Logo to run a charity show, please contact me at greg.ragland@shootfinish.com – with a few guidelines to follow I insist upon, I’d love for this effort to go nation- even World – wide.

I’d like to say a huge Thank You to Sunny (Tammy Sytch) for attending this year (And I hope for years to come). Via my relationship with Bambi (Look on the Staff page for info), I’ve been “working” for her for over a decade, and never had the chance to meet face to face until now. Seeing the way Fans (and professionals) alike were happy to see her, it makes it all worth it. Also, a huge shoutout to Wrestler’s Rescue & Dawn Marie – you are doing some much needed work, and your presence gets that across to everyone. I can’t forget Raven, attending his very first CAC event. His comments during the Baloney Blowout echo mine exactly – Younger workers wanting to get really into the business need to be CAC members – and his presence assists the CAC in bridging the generations of talent represented.

To all the CAC Board of Directors, and the others who work tirelessly to put this event on each year, I send you my sincere & heartfelt thanks. I truly wish to offer my services in any capacity you see fit to use me in. I’ll be a Lifetime member soon, allowed to wear that pretty Ribbon on my badge – something I look at as the sincerest form of honor to the organization. God willing, I’ll be helping to make your lives easier from this day on – even if only once a year.

Morgan – she’s immune to your charms, brother. Just saying.

With respect to everyone else though, my everlasting love & devotion are going out to Jason Sanderson. This fierce looking yet gentle man – who now has an Award named after him – has shown my family the most gracious and caring friendship I have ever known. Knowing me only a short time, he assisted my family in a time of crisis. He has since gone on to help heal my nephew of some of his pain from the loss of a brother AND best friend over the course of 2 years. Meeting Codi for the first time, he took him under his considerable wing, allowing Codi to attend the banquet & meet some of his long time heroes. Because of that Jason – you’re stuck with us. You’re MY hero.

Before I pointed my browser there, I already knew from the title – “Let’s Keep WWE Contained in a Wrestling Ring” – that this was going to be a slap in the face of the Business and it’s fans. As I read it, I kept wondering based on it’s date – April 1st – if this was some form of joke. And while it’s apparent from reading more of his “work” that this person believes they are humorous, Mark Chalifoux comes off as yet another person who has something against an entertainment millions of people enjoy. Yes Mark, millions – and worldwide, not just in the USA.

Let’s set a few things on the record here, Mark. How about a gander at the Demographics of Pro Wrestling?

Well, looks like a cross section of the population to me – but of course, I am probably just one of your basement dwellers, right? Wait a moment – if 47% of Pro Wrestling viewers are married – do their spouses live in the basement with them? Are the over 49% who make more than Minimum Wage living there? No?

So it comes down to that 35.2% who indicate they either Rent or have some other arrangement that would be your issue. After all, 64.8% own their own house, so we know THEY don’t reside in a basement. Pray tell – does that 35% indicate only basement dwellers?

Frankly, those who watch Pro Wrestling in general, and the WWE in specific cannot be quantified or identified in simple terms. yes, there are those who match your description (Just not as many as you imply), but also includes (Just from people I personally know and associate with) Psychologists, Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers – and yes, Politicians.

Aside from that, your article goes on to take swipes at the Business of Pro Wrestling in general, and the McMahon family in specific. Let’s break down what you write.

Libel perhaps?

“Someone who has built a life from dressing grown men in spandex, feeding them steroids like they were Everlasting Gobstoppers, and then parading them around a ring.”

The highlighted part is actionable, sir. As I am certain you are aware, Vince McMahon WAS put on trial in 1994 and was acquitted on charges that he was doing that very thing. That you decide to state this in print is strange considering that the WWE and the McMahon’s are quite protective of their image(s).

Due to that trial, Linda McMahon was made CEO/President of the company – and began to learn the very things that make her a credible candidate for Senate.

Silliness?

“I’m not even saying professional wrestlers can’t be in politics; heck, it worked for Jesse Ventura. I would even support Irwin R. Schyster in a campaign for local comptroller. I’m just saying anyone with the last name McMahon can’t be in politics. Every politician has skeletons in their closet. Unlike McMahon, most of them aren’t available on YouTube.”

Jesse Ventura did a good job; heck, he was elected over members of both national parties, spending far less to do so. That was the first glimmer that it didn’t take PACs to get elected, and not being tied to them, he was free to do things that needed to be done.

However, your distaste seems to stem simply from the name McMahon I see. Did you know that Linda studied Business Administration, and has a Teaching certification? So, she’s educated, that can’t be your issue. She successfully ran a company, including taking the whole thing Public. So, that she knows how to handle Finances or make decisions can’t be the problem. She’s appeared on various WWE shows over the years, acting a part that had her name and likeness, but that was NOT the real Linda McMahon. Thing is, politics seems to have other Actors who have run (and won) positions. For a small list:

Fred Grandy, who played ‘Gopher” on The Love Boat. (Congress)

Fred Thompson, who has appeared in numerous things – and even acted while IN Congress. (Congress)

Sonny Bono, Actor and Musician. (Mayor, Palm Springs)

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Actor (Governor of California)

Ronald Reagan, Actor (Governor of California, 2 term President of the United States)

So it obviously can’t be because she appeared on TV as a character using her name, can it? After all, look at the above list of people, all who serve(d) with distinction and efficiency despite their beginnings. Unless you happen to think Reagan playing The Gipper or Arnold playing the Terminator made them bad candidates as well…

Maybe it was this:

“We have enough problems in this country as it is. Electing leaders from the professional wrestling world will only make things worse.”

I find this to be one of the most ill informed comments I have ever read, and shows your bias in a clear light.

After all, the problems with this country couldn’t have come FROM electing the so called “professional” politicians who seem to have their hands firmly in the pockets of any PAC that will throw them cash – could it?

What a horrible notion, electing someone who has assisted in taking a company that was making barely enough to keep them out of bankruptcy – and turning it into a Billion dollar + per year enterprise. It’s a terrible idea to elect someone who knows how to balance the ledgers instead of someone who thinks the way to solve problems is to increase taxes or allow the Country to go further in debt. It’s shameful to even think that she may be a good candidate – despite the fact she’s self-financing her candidacy, which means she owes NO PAC a ‘favor’ for their help.

It’s no wonder the world is in such a state. When elitists like Mr. Chalifoux decide to spread their dislike and vitriol simply because they are either ill-informed or outright biased, they invariably get others to tout their message as if it were gospel.

Get a clue Mark. Many of the same people who watch “true” sports like the NFL, NBA or MLB also watch the WWE and Pro Wrestling. They enjoy it, and unlike your (Seeming) inability to separate Fact from Fiction, they ‘get’ that what they are watching is the same as any Movie or Sitcom.

That Linda McMahon was involved in that world is not what should be examined – her ability, passion and dedication to serving should.

OK, I wasn’t going to write this one so soon after the show, but after a few chats with friends, a few (angry) Emails about yesterday’s Predictions and noticing the way some people are talking about the show across the Net – I feel compelled to say a few things, so may as well go all out.

First, I’ll answer a couple of the Emails I received – always fun. First off, got this lovely note from someone calling themselves WJ:

“Why in the hell are you always ragging on the women in the WWE? Every time I see you mention them, you always seem to be saying they don’t belong in the ring”

Well WR – You couldn’t be more wrong. There are some quite talented female Wrestlers out there – and yes, a few happen to be in the WWE. If I seem negative about the WWE “Divas” it’s because by and large, their talent is squandered – meaning it is valued somewhat less than their “looks”. If the WWE took them seriously, so would I. Face it, ANY company that has a “Miss Wrestlemania” match being won by a man, and a 10 Woman match being won by Vickie Guerrero deserves the ridicule I heap on them. With all due respect to Vickie – she doesn’t belong in a ring because REAL workers like Mickie James, Beth Phoenix & Gail Kim have worked for years to become credible – and her inclusion demeans all of their hard work. To have her (Or Carlito from last year) win just makes it worse. So if I am rough on that Division – it’s not because of them, it’s because Creative doesn’t know what they are doing in that area.

Next, someone calling themselves “Renegade Sux”:

“look dude your predictions dont make any sinse edge is gonna destroy jericho because of his big mouth that just shows how much you know”

First “Sux” – Punctuation and spelling are your friend, and they want you to visit. I never said Edge wouldn’t beat down on Y2J, I said Jericho was going to retain. So i guess you’re right in a way – Edge did beat Jericho down. Aside from that, Jericho won, Edge lost. Guess I know a little, eh?

Last, a quick note from John that I received after the show ended:

“HAHA Mysterio beat Punk”

Yes John, he did. I was wrong, I admit that freely. Just because I think an extended program would be a better way to go doesn’t mean the WWE has to do so – in fact, their programs seem to be getting ever shorter. I still stand by my opinion that my choice was the better one, but I was wrong.

So, how did I do with my Predictions anyway? By my count I got 7 right out of 10, a 70% score. Sure, my reasoning was off in several places – but of the 3 I missed, 2 of them were matches where inside knowledge would have been the ONLY way I could have guessed correctly. And one of those 2 was a mockery of a match, so honestly – who cares if Vickie Guerrero “won”?

What I really want to focus on though is what I am reading around the Net. The general consensus seems to be that this year’s WM was somewhat lacking, and in general, I agree. Thing is, it was also enjoyable – and that’s the important thing, not if my favorite workers won. Let’s look at specific messages I’ve seen though – names are removed to respect anonymity, but I feel sure if they read this, they’ll know who they are.

1) “Shawns entrance last year was better”

Without a doubt. To be honest, there was ZERO chance that Shawn & the UT were going to top last year’s match – and that includes entrances. Don’t get me wrong – it was a good match, without a doubt the best of the night in my opinion. The thing is, IF Shawn had retired last year, I’d be singing his praises up and down, alongside that of the Taker. But this year, good as it was – it never came close to matching the event these two put on last year. While a nice touch at the end (a definite nod to the HBK retiring Flair match), it reminded me TOO much of HBK/Flair. Flair went out of the WWE in what I consider the manner befitting Flair. Shawn deserved something else entirely. Not exactly sure what WOULD be fitting – this to me just wasn’t it.

2) This place is on fire for Cena and Batista!

Did we see the same show? The silence of the crowd for the majority of their match was deafening. Oh, maybe if you were there in person, and your section was loud, I can see it – but honestly, ALL the matches seemed to be quiet, a fact that shames me – my Hometown can do better than that piddly noise they were making.

3) batista vs cena? dont care. yawn.

Finally, a sensible person.

4) Jericho and Edge stole the show.

While a matter of taste, I happen to agree to a point. I’d say realistically that it is tied with the HBK/Taker match which is amazing – that match had more emotion riding on it. HBK/Taker told a better story in the ring, but Jericho/Edge had the action & the uncertainty factor.

5) OMG!! What a beating Vince just got!! I think Brett can finally feel like he got revenge!! Ouch!!

Definitely. In fact, I think Vince allowed himself to take that “beating” was his way of burying the past, so the Hart Family could finally start to heal after so much tragedy and heartache. Now all we need is for Owen to take his rightful place along Stu & Bret in the WWE Hall of Fame.

6) Bret should’ve saved his swerve for the end

Dear God, yes. At the start like that, it ruined the psychology (What little this type of match would have). Towards the end, say if Vince grabbed a chair and Ref hart took it away, handing it to Bret.

7) the only good match was the undertaker and shawn michaels

Based on what? Seriously here, if that was the best to you, what were you watching besides WM?

Well, that’s enough for today – but let me finish with this. Shawn Michaels may come back as some are mentioning (“Nobody ever retires from a Retirement Match”), but I tend to doubt it. He was born in Arizona, in a town named Chandler (Actually Williams Field AFB – where I was born less than a year later) – so his Retiring from a match in Arizona makes perfect sense if you consider it’s where he “started” so to speak.

Regardless if he returns or not – Thanks Shawn for all the hard work over the years. It’s nice to see you walk away because it was “time” instead of losing your smile.

Believe it or not, while TNA doesn’t pose an actual threat to WWE programming as it stands, IF they shape up a few things they COULD begin to compete, instead of being an also-ran.

However, I’m not writing about TNA right now. Instead I am making my somewhat convoluted predictions about tomorrow’s Wrestlemania, amusing at least myself, and hopefully some of the rest of you out there. I’ll be mentioning things in no particular order, so don’t take this as a prediction of scheduling – and yes, I HAVE had people write me complaining that they have in the past missed matches because of the order I made a prediction. Silly, huh?

I’ll take the Money in the Bank Ladder Match first. Loads of talent in this one:

Christian

Kane

Dolph Ziggler

Shelton Benjamin

MVP’

Jack Swagger

Matt Hardy

Evan Bourne

Drew McIntyre

Kofi Kingston

This one could go many, many ways. Looked at as a reward for a job well done AND as recompense for the end of ECW, Christian certainly becomes a front-runner. Let’s not forget that IF he were to win AND Edge defeats Jericho, we could see the start of a program between Christian and Edge that has been a long time coming. From another angle, Drew McIntyre – IF he is going to continue favored son status – needs this win to forgo the need to write a program to get him a Title. Matt Hardy on the other hand would be a natural counter to a Jeff Hardy TNA Title run, so they could give him the briefcase for a “What If” scenario. The rest of the field is wide open – many deserve a title shot, but few of them would be credible as WWE or World champion.

I’m going out on a very slim limb on this one. After examining it from as many angles as I can concoct in my devious mind, a small process of elimination, and thinking hard about who I could see as a Champion, I give this one to…. Kane. My reasoning is simple – he’s been an also-ran in this match for so long, it’s about time he wins it – not to mention that he’s clearly getting close to hanging up his red & black tights, and really should get one decent Title reign before he goes.

Next let’s take the Unified Tag Team Championship: Big Show & The Miz vs. John Morrison & R-Truth. OK, so I have to be careful here – I admit to not at all liking the Miz. Sure, he’s grown as a wrestler (Man, that tastes bad.. eww), but I still don’t get the Title runs he’s getting. On the flip side, Big Show really has been getting wasted in the Tag picture for a while now, and frankly – I think they aren’t done with him there despite my notions. So, I see Show-Miz taking this one, HOPEFULLY by DQ – that at least sets up Morrison and Truth to get them down the line.

So – Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase vs. Cody Rhodes (Triple Threat Match). In yet another Heel vs Heel(s) match-up, we really have limited options. We know that neither side is going to make a Face turn (Unless they want to waste Orton in that role), so it really comes down to two things. One – it’s all a ruse AGAIN so that the now Hall of Fame member Million Dollar Man can be humiliated by his son.. or Two, the Million Dollar Man gets his revenge on Orton for all the ills of the past. Either way, I see Orton taking this one.

Well then. CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio. What can I say about this? Undoubtedly, it should be a spot fest of a match, since these two talents definitely can get it done. They’ve done their level best to make Mysterio the sympathtic favorite here, which screams to me that Punk is going to take the win here. It would make for fun TV, watching Mysterio tear apart the Straight Edge Society from the inside…

Now for Triple H vs. Sheamus. Honestly here, why? Was this put together just so Trip could have a Wrestlemania moment? Let’s face it – Sheamus, while doing in my opinion a great job as an interim champion, is hardly ready to carry Main Event status. The fans aren’t feeling him yet, although he shows signs of being great in the future if allowed to carry on. I’m giving this one then to Trip – and I hope that it’s done in a way that elevates Sheamus in some fashion.

10-Diva Tag Team Match. Do I HAVE to even talk about this one? I freely admit, I’m pulling this one out of a hat filled with names – Mickie James is my choice to win.

WWE Champion Batista vs. John Cena comes up next for me. They’ve pulled out all the stops to make Cena be the Underdog of this match – so much that they are definitely make this seem as if it’s a foregone conclusion that Batista will retain. So of course, just to be contrary, and because I think Batista losing makes for a better program, I’m saying Cena wins. Not saying he’ll get the Title, just that he’ll win.

World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho vs. Edge. Here we go again, the WWE pushing a feud in a blatant direction. Edge comes back, wins the Rumble – and takes out Jericho in revenge for all the bad things he said about Edge. OK, let’s get this one out in the open. Jericho has been the go-to guy for several years now, always putting forth a great effort and honestly not getting any real recognition. Forget Slammys, forget Tag titles – he’s earned a decent run with a Single’s Title. So let’s give this to Jericho, and let Edge beat him next time.

Bret Hart vs. Mr. McMahon. Let’s face it, there’s only one conclusion that makes this worth the setup. If Bret doesn’t come out on top – there’s something wrong with the world. Of course, there COULD be a huge swerve, and Bret joins forces with Vince to screw Shawn Michaels in his match – but I consider that to be WAY long odds.

Speaking of that – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. Ending The Streak would be foolish – Giving the Taker the distinction of never losing at a Wrestlemania sets up so many possibilities for future booking that I just cannot see Vince allowing it to end. Yes, it’s sad that Shawn will be leaving – for however long this time. But we’re talking Legacies here – and the Phenom should have this as his crowning feature.

So – right or wrong, there you are. I’ve made my calls – and I doubt I’ll hit even 40% correct if some of the silly choices of late continue. We’ll see after Sunday.

A way to highlight perhaps THE most defining product of TNA, the key area of that company that I believe has the ability to push TNA’s ratings up. Watching it last night, I started with optimism – but ended scratching my head wondering WHY?

Looking at the lineup, there was a lot of promise. The opener was a #1 contenders match for the X Division title, and had TONS of talent on display. Why in the world this part of the TNA product is being pushed behind Vignettes of Hogan, Bischoff and Flair is beyond me. It should be the defining thing for TNA, plain and simple. After all, look at the roster, and in your mind, place them in terms of ability and “thrill” factor. Now tell me – Where does a team like the Nasty Boys belong – behind the X talent, or in front of it on the “pecking” order? Since I am sure at least 90% said “Nasty Boys should follow the X”, we have to ask – what in the world are the bookers thinking?

Frankly, Destination X as a whole was a waste of time and money the way it was presented. Yes, I know a bunch of TNA fanboys will groan at this, and claim it’s better than the WWE product. Know what I say to that? You USED to be right. Now – with multiple vignettes at a time taking away match time, and old(er) teams and people taking up spaces from new talent – the TNA has become the WWE completely.

As you sit in front of the TV tonight watching both WWE and TNA, you should watch what’s really happening behind the scenes. Yes, the WWE is playing “old home week” by bringing Bret back – part and parcel of what TNA is doing BTW – but they are also giving fans what they want from a WWE show. People loved last year’s HBK/Taker match-up – and what a better way to send Shawn into (hopefully) his last retirement by doing it again? TNA fans may chant ‘Who needs Bret’, but facts speak for themselves – for years people have wanted Bret to “get even” with Vince – and Vince and company are giving that to us.

Meanwhile, what is TNA giving? A replay of the WCW Hulk/Flair rivalry? Oh sure, it’s AJ/Abyss giving us the in ring action (mostly) now, but they’ve turned two unique personas into extensions of Hogan and Flair. It’s not only silly, it’s downright insulting to us, to AJ & Abyss, and to the legacy of the greatness that Hogan/Flair gave us. They are taking a formerly great tag team (Nasty Boys) and putting them in for what seems no other reason than they are friends of Hulk & Bischoff. And in the rest of the process, they are taking everything that makes TNA unique, and watering it down in an attempt to create a hybrid old-ECW/WCW show.

That’s not to say that there is no bright spot. TNA has been smart enough to grab some ill-used WWE talent (Burke, Anderson, Taz) and given them a new lease on life. But unless they stop the direction they are taking now, TNA will only become a carbon copy of what it is SUPPOSED to be “fighting” against. They need to reign in the vignettes – yes, they are useful as exposition, but are MOST effective when used sparingly. They also need to increase the duration of matches – 3 to 5 minute matches may be easier to “script”, but they also become stale and boring.

The sad part is that I have tremendous respect for some of the very people I seem to be complaining about. Eric Bischoff has a good mind for TV, the Hulkster knows how to excite a crowd. Nash, Hall and even Sean Waltman (Syxx-pac) can and do play the anti-hero roles to the hilt, even if they tend to make silly mistakes.

Fact is, TNA has the tools and the talent. What they seem to be lacking right now is a solid direction. And they had better find it fast.

In general, many of my friends & family give me great tips when it comes to places to eat. From their advice in the past, I’ve found some gems that have become ‘go to’ places to grab a bite, or even places to take my Wife for a quiet dinner. I honestly wish that the place I was sent to could be among those – sadly, it’s instead become one on my short list that I will now avoid like the plague.

Before I begin though, let me say this – I’ve actually had quite a few people recommend this place to me as one of the better Chinese Buffets in Las Vegas, so it’s entirely possible my review is off the mark – but I call them like I see them. If this is what people call “Better”, I begin to suspect that none of them have been to either a real Chinese place, or prefer the bland Americanized version that is so commonplace. Either way, I still don’t see the appeal.

Upon entering the Buffet@Asia at 2380 Rainbow Blvd, I was actually impressed with the amount of food on display & the smells that met me. Everything certainly looked good and fresh, and I was also happy to note they had a Mongolian Grill – a cheesy Buffet gimmick prevalent in places like this, but when done right, oh-so good. With 3 others in my party (Yes, I took the advice seriously enough to take other friends), we were lead to the furthest point in the place, and were crammed in literally like sardines. Perhaps I should have taken it as a bad sign that the Emergency Exit was blocked by a table full of diners – a blatant misuse of space that is against the law. instead, I thought to myself “Wow, so busy they need to do that?”

My first instinct was to head straight to the Mongolian Grill. They had the usual suspects – Beef, Chicken, Pork & Shrimp – but also included a hard to find protein, Squid. The Meats looked fresh, but the seafood choices were swimming in ice water, generally a no-no so I avoided them. After selecting Beef and various veggies including Water Chestnuts, Onions & Peppers (Not separated but together, not good for those who dislike one but love the other), Mushrooms, Bean Sprouts and Bamboo shoots. Had to press a buzzer marked “Press here for Chef”, and was made to wait nearly 10 minutes before someone appeared from the back, walking slowly while tying on an apron.

Taking my choices, he then proceeded to place them upon the grill, and asked if I wanted Spicy. I indicated I did, and he went about cooking. This is usually a quick process on a very hot, flat surface. This however took nearly another 8 minutes, and several times I nearly asked him to take the food up. In all honesty though, I’ve never attempted this style of cooking, so my opinion is suspect. Taking the final dish, I selected some Sushi items that were just too tempting to pass up, and returned to my crowded seat.

I wish I had stopped him. The resulting dish was far too overcooked, making the meat dry and rubbery, and the veggies had no trace of the crunch that this style SHOULD have produced. There was also zero trace of Spicy – in fact, there was hardly ANY taste at all. On the bright side, the Sushi was as fresh as it looked, tasty, and the rice was properly prepared as well. Among the other choices I will talk about, this was easily the best part of the meal, and I can honestly recommend that the Sushi (And they had easily 15 varieties) is worth the $13.99 price to get in.

Going back to select more to try, my eyes were instantly drawn to Lobster (Yes, Lobster) in Ginger & Onion sauce. The sauce was amazingly tasty, unfortunately the method they use to crack the lobster resulted in many small fragments of Shell throughout the meat, so after a few small bites after digging out shrapnel from the slightly overcooked mass, I gave up. It’s too bad, because otherwise I would recommend this highly. On this trip I also selected something called Baked Seafood with Cheese, served upon a Clam shell. Avoid this dish at all costs ye who enter here – it is nothing more than store bought Imitation Krab Salad with Cheese on top & heated. Don’t get me wrong – I actually like the kitsch of Krab Salad – but I prefer it cold and on crackers, not heated with Velveeta. Shrimp & Snow Peas and Seafood Combination were basically the same dish with different veggies – the sauce was exactly the same, resulting in a case where you may as well close your eyes and imagine you’re eating the same dish. The Fried Shrimp was nicely coated in Panko, and had a non-assuming flavor. Still, it was not exactly Chinese in nature.

If you’re assuming by now that they are heavy on Seafood choices, you’d be correct. It’s entirely possible the selections I did not try may have changed my review – possible, but not likely. Among the other Seafood choices were Salt & Pepper Frog Legs, Steamed Fish, Raw Oysters, the obligatory Crab legs and Steamed Fish.

I next focused on some classic items & a couple base ones as well. Spring Rolls (Labeled as Egg Rolls which they aren’t) were nicely crispy, but otherwise totally bland. Cream Cheese Wontons tasted good, but were unfortunately none to fresh, and instead of crispy were dull and listless. Pot Stickers proved to be tasty but undercooked. Some type of steak (It was labeled Rib Eye, but I believe it to have been Sirloin) was unassuming and proved to be tasty but nothing special. Chinese & Japanese style Teriyaki Chicken were both prepared correctly although the Japanese version was missing something in the sauce.

Finally, one of my all-time favorite items – Sesame Balls. When cooked properly, these are actually round orbs with a slightly crispy texture filled with Red Bean paste, a slightly sweet concoction that some don’t like, but I sure do. These however were entirely flat, very undercooked & greasy. They tasted right though, so there was a bright side. I avoided the VERY picked over Dessert selections, but my companions all liked the Chinese Donuts.

Suffice to say, the bad far outweighed the good here. I’m hoping this was just an off night, because I just can’t see how my sources, who usually have good taste, could be this wrong. There are at least 10 more Chinese Buffets in town with a lower price that are far, far better. I’ll get to one of them and post a review soon, so that you can avoid a place like this.

First I’d like to say that I am quite sorry for that lapse – and I wish I could have not had it happen. But as truth is stranger than fiction, the reasons for the extended pause follow that formula.

To begin – I wanted to do things the “Right” way. I wrote facilities Emails & made phone calls repeatedly, asking for the express permission to use Logos, Names and perhaps even take Photographs. Many of the places in question ignored me completely – so I thought ‘Screw it” and did as I pleased, using whatever I had at hand. Some of them were nice enough to write me back and while not at all saying ‘NO’, were quite unhelpful as to my requests. basically, it was a wall of apathy. They want Press, but don’t seem to understand that the Food Blog IS the up and coming way for people to check out if a place is worth spending their hard earned Dollars at.

Big clue to all the Casino properties – a single bad review is more damaging by far than a bunch of ‘half off’ coupons can pull you out of. No, that’s not a threat – just a friendly clue. I pride myself in calling things the way they truly are – which is why I turned down several offers of Free buffets when I made my inquiries. Sure, I could have enjoyed a night out on their dime – but then *I* would question my own integrity as to any review I wrote about the establishment.

On the bright side, I’d like to give major Kudos to the Tropicana property. When I asked them, they were polite, were thrilled at the idea – but since they were undergoing major renovations across the whole property, they’d prefer I waited until things were settled. Thanks Tropicana -I will wait, and I will be sure to see you as soon as you are done.

So, from this point on, I will be doing my level best to get to the rest of the On and Off Strip Buffets as soon as I can. In fact, I already have 3 in the bag ready to go – look for them starting next week.

But while I have your attention, allow me to rant a bit about the silly world of Food Blogs & Food “Critics”.

Is it any wonder more and more people are turning to Food Blogs to get information about a place to eat? I mean seriously here, ‘Critics” have for some reason started to take themselves seriously – so much so that the Camp portrayal of one in the Pixar film Ratatouille (Anton Ego, ably voiced by Peter O’Toole) seems far more lifelike now than it did when I first watched the film.

So, let’s not mince words, shall we? Nowadays, Food “Critics” have turned into a bunch of pretentious, pompous, overbearing pricks. No longer is their cause a celebration of Food, telling everyone within earshot where to find “the good stuff”. No, today’s ‘Critics” are self important windbags, feeling that the success of an establishment rests squarely on their shoulders. They seem to honestly believe that a bad review from them will send people screaming away from an establishment faster than if a diner found a human finger in their Fries.

This is not to say that some of them aren’t quite entertaining, and even endearing in their way. Jeffrey Steingarten comes to mind. No doubt if you watch the Food Network you’ve seen his self importance on display on shows such as Iron Chef: America & Worst Cooks in America. His very bearing exudes that his opinion should trump those of his fellow judges, and with snide comments tossed towards his fellows, he amuses us to no end. Just watch him though. The very way he holds himself, the words he chooses – all are indications that he is above all of us as far as cuisine goes.

Consider this quote from his book ‘The man Who Ate Everything’; “I have always considered “Greek cuisine” an oxymoron. Nations are like people. Some are good at cooking while others have a talent for baseball or manufacturing memory chips.” In this one statement, he not only looks down his nose at US, but also towards the Greeks, Taiwanese and even the rest of America. I don’t know about the rest of you – but while Spanakopita & Baklava may not be haute cuisine, it’s tasty. And in the end – isn’t THAT what we really want, good tasting food?

So really now – this is a call to all of you out there. I want to see your opinion. Respond to this blog post, or mail me directly at Renegade @ShootFinish.com with your thoughts. Do you pay attention to Restaurant Critics anymore – or have you left them behind to discover your own Culinary adventures? And don’t forget to Digg it, send it to your friends – let’s really see what people think!
