Batch Unpack / Extract Password Protected Archives (zip, rar & 7z) using ExtractItAll

ExtractItAll is a freeware utility using which you can batch extract / unpack multiple password protected archives using a list of passwords. This tool can also be used to extract archives which are not password protected, these days huge files in rapidshare and other file sharing sites are stored in multiple parts. A 700MB file will be stored in 7 parts of 100MB each with file names file.rar, file.r01 .. file.rn etc so this tool also extracts files of those type as well.

To extract files just drag and drop the files that needs to be extracted and hit the ‘Start’ button at the bottom of the screen to start the extraction.

To extract the password protected files add the passwords and the program will save it, when the password protected files are being extracted password would be applied to extract the file.

The program provides two options for selecting the extraction destination, use the dynamic subdirectory when you want to the extract the files within the source directory and use fixed directory to choose the directory of your choice.

The program supports the following file types:

* 7-Zip ( *.7z )
* Rar ( *.rar | *.r00, *.r01, … | *.part1.rar , *.part01.rar , … )
* Zip ( *.zip )

This program does not require any installation hence can be used as a portable application. To run this application you will require .Net Framework 3.5 installed in your Windows pc.

Manage Mapped and Shared or Network Drives / Folders in Windows using Share Manager

Now most people have more than one computer at home with a home network, which gives rise to share and map folders across computers. Share Manager is a free software that allows you manage mapped and shared drives in your windows computer.

Features of Share Manager:

You can quickly add or remove a share folders from your computer. To add a shared folder click on the “Add Share” button then enter the shared folder name and select the folder that you wish you share.

Incase if you wish to remove a shared folder use the “Remove Share” option to remove the shared folder.

Similarly you can map a network drive using the “Map Drive” option to map a network drive. Enter the network drive’s path then choose the drive letter of your choice and if required enter the username and password. If you would like the mapped network drive to be available even after reboot then make sure that you check the ‘Persistent’ check box.

To remove a mapped drive use the ‘Unmap Drive’ option, this software is pretty straight forward to use we tested this in Windows 7 and Windows XP where it worked flawlessly. There is similar tool called NetDrives which we have covered earlier.

Recently Google added the Explore feature Google Reader which displays popular feeds that you may have not yet subscribed, this feature may be useful and there may be many people who don’t like this feature. I wanted to get rid of the Explore feature and found that there was no way to do that from the settings. There is a excellent greasemonkey script called “Google Reader Remove Explore” that removes the explore feature in Google reader.

Uninstall Adobe Flash Plug-in and ActiveX Control

There were recent enhancements to Adobe Flash player installers owing to which you cannot uninstall Adobe Flash from your computer from Windows control panel. In the event that you need to uninstall the Adobe Flash player completely it has to be accomplished by using official tool provided by the Adobe.

Adobe Flash Uninstaller is a small program weighing only 206KB that you need to download and run to remove the Adobe Flash player from your computer. When you run the uninstaller you will be prompted by the uninstaller to confirm the removal of the Adobe Flash player, if you opt for removal the un-installation process would be completed in few minutes.

Instructions from Adobe for Flash player un-installation:

Download the uninstaller from here.
Save the file to your system, choosing a location where you can find it (for example, your desktop). Macintosh users may need to open or unstuff the .hqx file.
Quit ALL running applications, including all Internet Explorer or other browser windows, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, or other Messengers. Check the Windows system tray carefully to make certain no applications are still in memory which might possibly use Flash Player.
Run the uninstaller. This will remove Adobe Flash Player from all browsers on the system.

Note: The uninstaller cannot remove files currently in use.

If you have any instances of the player open in your web browsers, instant messaging clients, stand-alone SWFs, or projectors, then the uninstaller will complete but some files may not be deleted. If this occurs, then close all of your applications and run the uninstaller again to ensure that all files are removed.

Note: Internet Explorer users may have to reboot to clear all uninstalled Flash Player ActiveX control files. If you’re not certain, select the “Show Details” button in the Flash Player uninstaller. If there are any log lines that begin with “Delete on Reboot…” then you’ll need to reboot BEFORE running the Flash Player installer again.

Firefox Greasemonkey Script: Display Actual Unread Google Reader Feed Item Count

Google reader is a fantastic feed reader for managing all your RSS feeds and is used by many of us. If you subscribe to lot of RSS feeds then you will receive thousands of updates daily but Google reader displays 1000+ as the total count of the unread items when the unread feed item count is more than 1000. There are instances when you would like to know how much unread items you have if you are clearing your RSS feeds after a long time like me.

There is a very useful greasemonkey script that will sum up the unread item of each feed and display the actual unread count in the Google reader.

After the script is installed the unread count is now being displayed correctly:

So you can now notice that the unread items are now correctly being displayed in Google reader after the script was installed.

How to Prevent Ubuntu Linux from Resetting or Changing Computer’s BIOS or Hardware Clock

When Ubuntu Linux and Windows are used together and if the time zone is not UTC and when the computer is rebooted into Windows after Ubuntu Linux is used the time gets changed as the BIOS clock gets reset to UTC. For example if the time zone that is set in Ubuntu Linux is GMT +5.30 hrs then after Ubuntu Linux’s usage the time in BIOS clock would be set to UTC time i.e. the BIOS clock would be +5.30 hrs behind the Ubuntu Linux’s time but if you boot into Ubuntu Linux it will automatically adjust to the local time where as the time on Windows will be the UTC time which can cause issues with Windows.

The difference is the way Ubuntu Linux and Windows handle time, Windows considers the BIOS clock of the computer to be the local time where as Ubuntu considers it as UTC time. To solve this we would have to set Ubuntu Linux to consider the hardware or BIOS clock as local time

How to Prevent Ubuntu Linux from Resetting or Changing Computer’s BIOS Clock

In the following steps you can find the steps to set the hardware clock as local time in Ubuntu.

1. Open the terminal and enter the following command:

sudo gedit /etc/default/rcS

2. In the gedit window that opens ups find the the line UTC=yes and change it to UTC=no

After you make the changes it should look like this:

After you make the changes save the data using the save button. That’s it now the Ubuntu Linux will treat the hardware or BIOS clock as the local time and the alternate boots between Windows & Ubuntu Linux should not cause issues with time.
