Label: Bootleg
Year: 1997

Here's the unreleased, final Into Another record that circulated around many years ago after the band had gone their separate ways. The story goes, the band was in England working on the follow-up to Seemless, the material was becoming more "electronic" and the band seemed to disagree on how to move forward. So, instead of finishing the record, they decided to do the noble thing and break up the band. Singer Richie Birkenhead wanted to finish the album, so he took the incomplete songs and fleshed them out using drum machines, samples, loops, etc.
I've yet to find someone who thinks this was a good idea, or that the resulting record is worth a shit.
That being said, I have a friend who asked me about this yesterday, and it turns out I had a copy, so I figured that as long as I'm uploading it for him, I might as well upload it for you too. Right?
Maybe you will be that one guy (or girl...but doubtful...girls don't read this blog, and they certainly don't listen to Into Another) who "gets" the concept behind this album. Maybe. Good luck.

Label: Headhunter
Year: 1995

Nineties emo (a la Boys Life) meets nineties San Diego post hardcore (a la Drive Like Jehu). Chune were contemporaries of bands like Drive Like Jehu, Tanner, fluf, Boilermaker, and No Knife in the San Diego scene, they did a split with Garden Variety, they put out records on subsidiaries of Cargo, and they weren't afraid to let their songs "jam" a bit.
If you are of a certain age, or a big enough music nerd, then that is all you need to know.

Label: Quarterstick
Year: 1994

This one was requested a long time ago after posting the first and last Kepone albums. I believe it was referred to as the "good one", maybe even by THEE James Joyce himself.
Like all other output from the Kepone camp, I would call this one "spotty", with some very high highs, and some...regrettable...lows. There is a lot of grungy alt-rock style 90's stuff floating around on here, some Fluid style, some Mudhoney style, some Gruntruck style...those types of styles. There's a little bit of SST vs. Alternative Tentacles influenced noise rock as well, if that means anything.
I would again ascertain that Best Of Kepone could be a pretty great album, but quality control and editing was not their strong suit.

Label: Katorga Works
Year: 2011

Something about this band seems Australian circa 1987, as if they would have been playing shows there with Thug, Beasts Of Bourbon, and Feedtime, as opposed to actually being a band out of Rochester, N.Y. circa now, who would probably rather be pummeling through a basement hardcore show. But that's just the way the world works sometimes.
Sounds like D.O.A. as played by Pissed Jeans. Good? Yes.

Label: Alternative Tentacles
Year: 1997

A lost gem. (old) Neurosis + Cop Shoot Cop + Loudspeaker + Christian Death = Dead And Gone.
This was their last record prior to changing their name (and lead vocal duties) to Creeps On Candy, only to change it all back to Dead And Gone in 2000. Makes sense.
The world needs more of this.

Label: Seventh Rule
Year: 2012

Remember just a minute ago when I said I didn't want to make a habit out of linking to Bandcamp sites? Well, I didn't really keep me word. Apologies.
The thing is though, this record, and this "band" (not the right word, I know), are doing something so fucking incredible right now that you absolutely have to hear it, and support this innovative approach to making music by purchasing it. Crapping you negative, this is an ESSENTIAL purchase.
I will freely admit to being late to the Author & Punisher party, I had never heard of him until reading a review of this new album, and more importantly seeing video of Tristan Shone, the sole "member" of Author & Punisher in action. But that first video was mesmerizing to me, and since then I've tracked down everything I can find and watch of his works.
Short version of the story: metalhead guy is really smart, gets engineering degree, plays in metal bands, gets job in highly specialized technology lab, burns out on it, burns out on playing in metal bands, has opportunity to assist former professor/artist with installation in Finland, light bulb goes off that he can mere his two passions of music and engineering, begins fabricating instruments out of high grade materials in an effort to make "nasty bass tones", those machines evolve and make nastier and nastier bass tones, there is no need for traditional instrumentation, man and machine.
The easy version of the story is: if you like Godflesh, Sunn, Big Black, Skinny Puppy, Killing Joke, or the "drop" noises in a dubstep song, then you will eat this record up.
If you enjoy music that is both visceral and unique, then you will eat this record up. Promise.

Label: Bigout
Year: 2012

I'm not trying to make a habit out of linking to Bandcamp sites, but as you well know, I don't condone pirating music, and when a band is out there busting their asses putting out records, touring, and giving it their all, and their music is as good as this, then I gotta send you to the source. Hopefully, you'll agree, you'll buy the record, and they will retire to mansions in the south of Spain, fanned to sleep in the soft Mediterranean breeze by olive-skinned beauties. That's my hope.
Sofy Major play the kind of really heavy noise rock I can't get enough of, the kind with elements of JJ Paradise Players Club, La Gritona, 16, Unsane, and Deadguy. They live on the border of hardcore, sludge, and noise rock, you know, not the nicest neighborhood, low resale values, and shitty public schools, but a raging block party every year.
Membrane bring more of the same, a suffocatingly hot blanket thrown over your head, followed by a barrage of blows raining down on you, coming from every direction. Are those fists? Was that a pipe? A bat?
Go listen, then go buy.

Label: Assorted Porkchops
Year: 1996

The Late Bloomer demo (and more specifically the Scout talk) might have opened the floodgates to some mid-90's southeastern emo. Not sure yet, but this Rights Reserved 12" certainly gets the ball rolling in the right direction.
Rights Reserved were in the same little scene as Tonka, Unherd, Cornelius, Assfactor 4, Bedlam Hour, and later Eagle Bravo (next door neighbors to the little scene that had In/Humanity, Antischism, Initial State, Unpersons, and those types). It was a scene based in the college towns of North and South Carolina, that took the O.G.D.C. (Original Gansta District of Columbia...duh) emo sound and started tweaking it. They added noise, spastic freak-outs, math rock stutters, and straight hardcore muscle. Each band was a little different, but they all were pushing their music further out into new territory, each release was better than the last.
In particular, Rights Reserved were specialists in taking punchy, melodic hardcore, and layering on what were new emo stylings of the day; some big dynamics, some messy indie rock (they were from the Research Triangle area after all, so Polvo, Superchunck, Archers Of Loaf, and all them were right there), and luckily none of the squealing, roll-on-the-floor histrionics of some of their contemporaries.
Essential.

When someone says "ex-Scout" around here, it certainly gets more attention than maybe it does in 99.9% of the other households in America. Scott Wishart of Scout fame, Ostinato Grove fame, Such As fame, one half of the good-timin' Wishart brothers, Lunchbox Records honcho, and all around nice enough fellow, was a fixture in the Atlanta punk/hardcore music scene as I entered it (from the rear of course) in my early 90's college days. I was a a fan of his band Scout, and their mathy/emo/rock records, and then he started going into deeper mathy/indie territory, before ultimately going completely off the deep end and moving to South Carolina (the shittiest of all Carolinas). I will say, he eventually wised up and moved to the superior Carolina, North Carolina, where today he operates Lunchbox Records, and has had his hand (consonance!) in some fantastic releases from Atlanta's past (Car vs Driver, Fiddlehead, Scout, Inkwell, Hal al Shedad, etc), and Charlotte's present (Grids, Meth Mountain, etc.).
That aside, Scott is still playing drums, and most recently in this three piece throwback to the glory days of North Carolina indie rock. All ragged, and earnest, and catchy, the way they used to do it around Chapel Hill.
Label: Bootleg
Year: 2004

The original three piece lineup (no to be confused with the original one piece lineup that predated it), captured by John Peel while on a European tour in 2004. Drums, bass, and viola...yes, viola that churn up a moody sludgy mix of Lightning Bolt meets Guapo meets Totimoshi. No vocals, if that bums you out, I don't know.
Highly recommended.
It might help lift your spirits after a disappointing Manchester Derby this morning.

Year: 1993

Polvo did two Peel Sessions, one in 1992, and this one, recorded February 7th, 1993. I don't have the other one, otherwise I would have made this post the ole' Two-fer Tuesday style, but alas...it is the crappier One-fer version. A thousand apologies.

This particular session is pretty weird, even by Polvo standards, and the songs are coated in a pretty thick sheen of guitar noise, sometimes to the point of, "oh, wait a minute...I know this song" a minute or two into the song. I think that's a lot cooler than just playing 'em straight though, and it makes this a worthwhile listen in and of itself. And by the way, that photo up there actually is Polvo sitting in a boat. Google image search...I love you.

Just as a sidebar though, there are a lot of requests being posted in that dialog thing over there on the right of the screen, and that's fine, in fact keep them coming because it sometimes jogs my memory about something I haven't listened to in awhile, but, make sure you also check the search function in the upper left hand corner of the page. Some of the stuff being requested has already been posted back in time somewhere. Also, if a link is broken on one of the old posts, it's better to mention it in the dialogue box rather then in the comments of the original post, as I (speaking for myself here) don't make it a habit to go back many months to look for new comments on old posts, so if it's there, it may never get seen, or at least not in any timely sort of manner. Cool?

Alright, that'll do for this evening.

I've come to hate music so much.

The pretentiousness of it, the pretentious love of it.
Don't get me wrong, I like lots and lots of music and there's lots of music that's especially relevant to me or means something to me becuzza my memories and where/when the music and I was. I even discover music I've never heard before that rocks my socks off or now and again hear something Completely New! that blows my mind.
Like the first time I heard Sonic Youth's '4 Tunna Brix' Peel session where they did those Fall covers, or this Swedish blackened crust band called Slaktrens who're so frigging great and a fairly new discovery for me or for that matter Emmylou Harris' 'Roses in the Snow' record that does it for me every time and has done so for years and probably will for years to come.

I won't even get started on "world" music.

There is so much good music, really.

And AIDS Wolf broke up, which really does make me a little sad.
I can still remember the first time I heard Chinese Roulette.. holy fuckin' wowzers, man.
Their last record sounded like everything that Sonic Youth was never intent on or possibly even capable of, and on Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde they gave us the funkiest, scariest, saturday-morning textured jams this side of James Brown and Melt Banana.
I've read Chloe Lum's words on the state of the union; about how fucked it is.. I'm feeling it but I think it pertains to more than just the noisy and noisiest of rock and does extend inta all dat existential/sociopolitic/cultcha shit that's eating away at the lot of us, and you know it is.. it's eat or be eaten, so feed yourselves right and keep the space you have with some room at the table... and all that.

The worlds a mess, it's in our kiss.

I actually still love music a lot, and whole lot at that, and so, I want to share this, and this is probably my favourite Rocket From the Crypt record, out of several favourite Rocket From the Crypt records - Paint as a Fragrance!

Label: Communion Label
Year: 1991

As the years go on, I seem to circle back around to the Velvet Underground more and more often. Like every couple of months I go through another Velvet Underground "phase", and bother my wife with incessant plays of Loaded and White Light White Heat. I try to explain that the beauty of the band is that they are basically two awesome bands in one; the Lou Reed poppy stuff, and the John Cale art drone. And they are both equally awesome (which version of Velvet Underground do you prefer?)!
So, as I am currently into one of by bimonthly (lunar-based of course) phases, this Steel Pole Bath Tub 7" featuring not one, but two, pretty faithful Velvet Underground covers seems appropriate. Yes?

Label: Fartblossom / No Core
Year: 1985

In the midst of some hometown nostalgia-cum-old-band-reunion talk around these parts (the parts in question having originated in Winston-Salem, North Carolina [New Start Posse!] mind you), and that, by default is going to eventually circle back to the O.G. Winston-Salem hardcore band, Subculture. Amidst the Bloodmobiles, and No Labels, and Stillborn Christians, and Ugly Americans, and yes, even Corrosion Of Conformity's, there was our own Subculture.
Mix together the straight ahead hardcore of Minor Threat with the nastiness of Corrosion Of Conformity, maybe Void, thrown in some of the goth-ish elements of early T.S.O.L., and you get Subculture more or less.
While Winston-Salem's biggest musical export, Let's Active, was making alliances with R.E.M, Subculture was making alliances with C.O.C. and making regular trips to Raleigh and Durham to play with the hardcore bands sprouting up there, which eventually would lead to Simon Bob Sinister drawing the cover art, and Reed Mullin producing and singing back-ups (along with Woody Weatherman as well). The band even got out and toured around a couple of times, oddly enough with NOFX, and garnered good reviews, but eventually split after recording a second album that was never released.
They went on to play in other bands, most notably, Kevin Collins singing for Double Negative (some 20 years later!), but also bands like Erectus Monotone, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Days Of, and others.
Fucking essential.
More on Winston-Salem hardcore's second generation to come (I'm sure you can't wait)
To my senses, she's never put out a shit record and for a musical artist who does pretty much exist in the mainstream she's maintained her consistency by continually changing what she does, and continually doing that well, while keeping her craft distinct enough to be recognizable as herself.

Also, working with other great musicians to communicate what she's attempted so far counts for a lot as well; with Rob Ellis and Steve Vaughn as the 'Rid of Me' band they produced a mainstream punk record that in some ways seems even more meaningful than 'Nevermind'. Harvey's take on Dylan's 'Highway '61' is just about as great as Patti Smith owning Van Morrison's 'Gloria' on Horses.

But holy shit, this isn't about 'Rid of Me'; I'm talking about what she did to engage herself next with 'To Bring You My Love'. She took the punk band and built a cabaret theater around it all so as to become "The Voodoo Blues Queen and the Lovely Evil Band"; imagine if the child of Diamanda Galas and Screamin' Jay Hawkins actually incarnated as a woman from the English countryside who Lovvves Captain Beefheart.

For me, 'To Bring You My Love' is my favourite PJ Harvey "era", and this an excellent representation of that.

Enjoy!

PJ Harvey - Like at Glastonbury, 1995

YOWZERS!

David Yow. Looking a 'lil John Lydon up there. Or something.

The name summons images of sweat and screaming, Olympic class crowd-surfing and frontal male nudity; cookie dough and food colouring; LSD and Texas; visceral and biting poetic ruminations on modern life and artfully wrought strings of profane bullshit smeared on everything including the walls; an almost gothic sense of Americana and a sort of good ol' boy urbanity; it's intelligence having coffee and cigarettes with absurdity; maybe even some of the very best things about the USA. Maybe?

Take a good look at the art he's producing these days right here.

The pastiche I present comes from a good few sources and includes most of the official collaborative efforts so far from Mr. Yow and accounted company save for his performance with the Didgits from an independent film and his track with Randy Wilson on the b-side of the Duelin' Firemen split single with the Boredoms.

I've included some live cuts, like Rapeman's live cover of ZZ Tops 'Just Got Paid' where he's present at the mic, howling along with Albini, in the way that he howls, amounting to at that particular point an 'almost' Scratch Acid reunion with Steve Albini on guitar; there's the live Cop Shoot Cop track where he's there singing their 'Money Drunk' on the last song of their set; there's even him singing with Local H on a train-wreck rendition of a Chicago song. Huge fun.

There's even his commentary on Tool's 'Schism', which is fucking gold.

This compilation includes:

00 Wrekmeister Harmonies - Pittsburgh (live)
01 Ventura - It's Raining on One of My Islands
02 Melvins & Yow - Blockbuster (the Jesus Lizard; btw, Sims' sang tJL's version on record.)
03 'Schism' Commentary
04 Ventura - le Petit Chaperon Beige
05 Pigface - The Bushmaster
06 Haze XXL - Infestation of Buffalo
07 Model/Actress - The Nodder
08 Haze XXL - White Boy
09 Geronimo - Facepeeler
10 Scratch Acid - the Greatest Gift (Metal Moo Cow version)
11 Melvins & Yow, Godzik Pink - Dry Drunk
12 Alexander Hacke - All American Happy Hour
13 David Yow - One Dyin' and a Buryin' (live Roger Miller cover)
14 Cop Shoot Cop - Money Drunk (live)
15 Pigface - Bushmaster (remix)
16 Helmet - Custard Pie (Led Zeppelin cover)
17 Local H - 25 or 6 to 4 (live Chicago cover)
18 Melvins & Yow - Smells Like Teen Spirit (live Nirvana cover)
19 Melvins & Yow - Okie From Muskogie (live Merle Haggard cover)
20 Rapeman & Yow - Just Got Paid (live ZZ Top cover)

Where's the fourth one? I don't know, why don't you find it and place it at my feet when you do? Fair?
Trans Am are a tenuous proposition, they an easily over-think an idea and run it into the ground, or, they can lock into a groove so potent you want them to keep running on it for days. It might depend on how German you are as to how much you appreciate their style. My last name is "Kiser" by the way...so...sorta German.
On this recording Trans Am have their guitars turned way up, and the drums are set to "bombastic" mode for a good portion of the set, which means an overly rockin' version of their selections. I'm always up for overly rockin', everybody knows that. For real, ask anybody. Ask that guy there, the one right there, he knows.

DL

get atwitter!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oAGGn6zTxtc/T4TGWdPlnjI/AAAAAAAAGC0/N7TYYh8dh3g/s400/292202_10150796241400903_169789340902_11844165_434112811_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5729922715031543346" />

from the desk of scion a/v:

We're giving away tickets to every Melvins show on their current US tour!
