i was actually on my way to posting this very album earlier today...until i'd read something that was brought to my attention over in the forum section (which you can read all about here)

i thought this over...and with the help of a one "abbottoirez"...i've decided to post it

but what you need to do is go and take a look at the link i've provided...and you should help out a little...it all goes to a good cause...and if you're like me...you like give and get situations

"abbottoirez" suggested all kinds of things that could get done to folks that don't help out (ie: gonorrhea...jehovah's witnesses)...but i can think of one thing that would trump all of that...you could have the ghost of vocalist laura carter haunt your house...and if you know anything about her...that's all it should take

and for the few of you out there that aren't aware of this band...imagine a band combining all of the good qualities of both scratch acid and the jesus lizard...and this is what you get

Prior to some massive (not to say completely undeserved) hype, Pissed Jeans was a noisy punk band in the tradition of the some of the great noisy punk bands; from the grating proto-sludge confrontation of Flipper, to the hardcore revisionism of Drunks With Guns, to the over driven throbbing veins of Shorty, all the way through the herky-jerky post-screamo caterwaul of Abe Vigoda. I get a feeling these dudes have great record collections, because they seem to have synthesized the last two decades of underground loud music into a cohesive assault that leaves little to be desired.

Personally, I kinda dig this record more than their last two albums, but that being said, their last two albums rule, so....

If you thought their newer stuff was a might bit "too Jesus Lizard-y", give this record a whirl and let me know what you think.

Fortunately I was in the right place for this session so we are tape hiss free! Recorded at Maida Vale, Melt Banana are on blistering form and power through a 30 minute set. Quite a few tunes from their "Scratch or Stitch" & "Charlie" LP's and other countless singles & splits. If anyone wants to add a track listing then be my guest!

Melt Banana are currently on tour in the US at the moment so don't pass up the opportunity of seeing them live.

Pride Parade - Dose

This is the brand new record from Athens, Georgia band Pride Parade, who, to me at least, are absolutely fantastic. If you downloaded the Atlanta double compilation I posted a few months back, you no doubt will remember them as a highlight of that collection. They have a knack for mixing a few different styles of guitar rock into one big, loud, bombastic racket. You like growling sludge-damage (a la the faster Harvey Milk jams)? Got it. You like snaking Led Zeppelin rave-ups (a la The Tom Collins)? Got those too. You like the distorted thud of noise rock (a la Tar)? Yep, got it.

Basically, it's all the fun stuff that made up your formative years in rock-n-roll distilled into one glorious album. It's like the bar band at the greatest bar of all time (except Cheers...that place seemed pretty untouchable, nobody should be asked to compete against that).

The band is offering this as a free download, but would love to have a little cheddar back from you if you like it. Or, they have a vinyl version for sale via their website. You can help the cause here.

Vineland - 7"s - A Tribute To Jerry Fuchs pt. 2

First and foremost, Jerry Fuchs is not on either of these 7"s. He played in the band starting around 1996, and there is an album worth of unreleased material from his tenure in the band, but sadly, it languishes in somebodies closet somewhere.

I wanted to post the Vineland records, not only because they're great records, but because when I think of Jerry Fuchs, it's Vineland that I think of. I think of seeing Vineland play in the front room of a friend's house, the Landfill (what up Jon Milavec!), and being so stoked because the drummer was "one of us". A guy who left his small town to join up with one of his musical heroes, not ever thinking for a second what a hero he would become to so many other people. And of course the band killed it, especially that drummer. He always killed it, it was just how he played. Such a natural dexterity, such seemingly effortless talent. He was unreal, and it was that one performance that really opened my eyes to just how great he was.

Think I'm exaggerating? Ask anyone who saw him play. Shit, just a couple of months ago, a friend of mine who's been playing in bands for years, a guy who's run sound at a local rock club, a guy who records bands for a (partial) living, a guy who's seen his fair share of bands, he saw Jerry playing with Maserati, and was compelled to pull him aside after their set to tell him how outstanding his drumming was. He had never met the guy, and didn't realize who he was, but Jerry made such an impression, he just had to say something.

That was the effect his talent had on people. It will be sorely missed in the years to come.

I realize that folks don't swing by this blog for overwrought personal rants or outpourings of emotion, but when someone you know dies unexpectedly, it tends to bring out the softer side of a guy, so you'll just have to bear with me a second.

To the friends and family of Jerry Fuchs, I want to extend my condolences for their loss, it's a heartbreaking tragedy that someone so well loved, and someone so talented should pass away in the prime of their life. It's hard to imagine a more senseless turn of events.

There are plenty of eulogies much more eloquent than I could muster all over the internet, and a brief scan would give the uninitiated a pretty clear picture of the impact, both musically and personally, that Jerry had on those around him. For such a humble guy, he certainly cast a huge shadow, and his contributions to modern music will not be soon forgotten.

I will post a couple records that are related to Jerry Fuchs in some way, but I am starting with Turing Machine on the recommendation of James Joyce, since James, also a powerhouse drummer in his own right by the by, is of the opinion this might be the purest expression of Fuch's drumming. And it is hard to argue with this rhythm section, they swing when they need to swing, they pound when they need to pound, and they lay back in the cut when it's time to relax. All told though, it's the rhythm section, and most notably the drums that are propelling this album along.

Enjoy the music.

And, again, I know I'm just some dude out on the internet, but I urge you all to think about your friends and family today. Think about how lucky you are to have them in your life, and if you haven't reached out to someone in particular in a long time, don't hesitate. You never know, you just never know.

CROWN ROAST A.K.A. "RIG"

Before Crown Roast were known as, er, Crown Roast they were known as Rig. However there was another Rig about at the same time (kinda Big Black clone, well, they used a drum machine) so they changed their name to Crown Roast. The A side of the single on Unclean (UR-18 for the office workers) was "Warthole" which you'll find on the album (exact same version). So I've not included that, but just the B side which is a worthy edition to your Crown Roast catalogue.

pigface is a sort of supergroup that was formed during ministry's THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE tour that ended up taking on a life of it's own with a revolving door of musicians that's involved everyone from david yow (the jesus lizard) to jello biafra (dead kennedys) to paul raven (killing joke) to trent reznor (nine inch nails) to steve albini (big black) to nivek ogre (skinny puppy)...

but for this album...some of the folks involved are: chris connelly (revolting cocks)...william tucker (my life with the thrill kill kult)...andrew weiss (rollins band)...en esch (kmfdm)...leslie rankin (silverfish)...

so hopefully you've already made up your mind and are already downloading this

By request, here's a Tar 7" for you. I don't have the Touch and Go 7" you requested, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

We've covered Tar here before, so I needn't get too deep into a description of their sound. Plus, it's Saturday night, and I just got home and put the kids to bed after a long afternoon of cooking out and drinking Coors Light, so I'm a little tired, and slightly drunk. The Tar request was a good enough one that I wanted to oblige it though, so I'm powering through.

Tar is awesome. Tar are more refined than many of their brethren of the same era. Tar remind me of college. That is all.

Is it possible that we never posted this long lost gem? I checked the archives and didn't see it, so before I delete it off my computer (it's coming out of rotation on the ole iPod), I figured I had better remedy this situation. Stat!

From the makers of King Snake Roost comes this little treat of deranged noise rock. And what a treat it is. Delightful! There are members of Mudhoney, Lubricated Goat, and other freak-a-zoids on board for the ride, but if you know King Snake Roost, then you kinda know what you're getting into. It's muscular, burly, unclean dirges of bass-driven hate-speak. And I mean that in a good way.

Well, I'm not going to try and put one over on you - this is by no means Patton's best work. It is, however, a really interesting and good album. There are a couple of cheesy lyrics and the like but this is definitly the kind of album you can play while driving around or something.. and it might make you feel really ballin' if you turn the bass up really high. I would put this album above Faith No More and below Tomahawk and Mr. Bungle on the Mike Patton meter. Assuming there is a Mike Patton meter. If there was, the bad side of it would still be good compared to most other music so take this for what it is - one of Patton's many experiments - and enjoy!

While I have both the Polio singles requested the Hercules E.P. is included here. Good job as the E.P. contains one of my favourite noise rock records - "Los Duenos Nueve". For those unfamiliar with Polio the vocals may take a bit of getting used to but it's worth it as the music is solid. Driving, churning stuff throughout.

Remember when Black Flag decided to start playing slower songs, and Greg Ginn decided to indulge all of his inner-jazz-skronk desires? It was around the latter half of 1984 or so, in case you forgot. Well, that alienated a lot of their fans, and while I'm pretty sure the band could have cared less about the musical demands of their "fans", they were at least kind enough to introduce a replacement band in the form of Bl'ast to soothe those not comfortable with Black Flags own artistic shifts. Bl'ast would continue the sonic template of the old Black Flag and grind out a few albums of atonal hardcore hate fucks that, at times, rivaled the mighty Black Flag themselves. I mean, shit, you could even go see Bl'ast and get confused as to why there's a dude playing a clear Dan Armstrong guitar, or a clear lucite drum kit a'la (oh, wait...) Black Flag. It's understandable. Really.

So, fast forward a few years later, and you got Born Against criss-crossing the country serving up a particularly caustic brand of hardcore. Great lyrics, great music, great graphic identity...sounds familiar right? Yeah, well, in a familiar move, Born Against decided they would start playing slower, and they would start indulging their every noisy indulgence. Sure, some people rolled with the punches and stayed on board with them (hey...oh, yeah...I get that too). But of course, there were those who cried for "the old Born Against", and for those disgruntled "fans", Born Against served up Hail Mary. Same record label, same graphic identity, and same furious, intelligent, grating hardcore assault. There you go fans, you're welcome.

Sidebar: I was searching for an image to go along with this post, and noticed this record on three or four other blogs...oops. Sorry, I hadn't seen it around, but I'm kinda lazy. Oh well, maybe you hadn't seen it around either.

UNSANE - PEEL SESSION No.3

Disclaimer - sound quality isn't the greatest here - a question of right time / wrong place (which annoyingly was the same case for the Shellac session that happened in the same month). Anyway, past the tape hiss & radio reception we have 3 Unsane songs that you know (Trench/SOS/Blew) and 2 that you may not (Radio 1/Speak English). The last one we have Unsane joined by P.W. Long and this session is worth hearing just for that.

these folks from cedar falls,ia were part of the united sons of toil show i'd given a write up a few spaces down

they were 1 of 2 bands that blew me away that night (the other being tusot of course)

and in keeping with the "this would've been more appropriate to post over on CGB but i'm doing it here" tradition...

experiencing this band live could be compared to running with the bulls: it's all exciting until you get gored...and this music is what's going through the bull's head as it's tossing you into the air in order to get to the people in front of you

and to use the bull analogy again...that's exactly what vocalist jacob reminded me and the girlfriend of as he stalked the line between band and audience (i knew i was going to be in for a show as he started stripping down to a t-shirt and a pair of basketball shorts before the band went on...and he has a pretty kick ass thundercats belt buckle as well)

the band is as confrontational as hank rollins lead black flag mixed in with unsane and the band 16 (who they remind me a lot of)

so with that all being said...put on these red pajamas and stand in front of the band

I DON'T CARE IF IT HAS FOOTIES!

this was sent to me by a member of the band that goes by the name of dave (there are 2 daves in the band...so i'm not able to pinpoint which dave sent it...so thanks dave)

this is a trio out of philly that play "noise punk" (dave's words)

as soon as i laid eyes upon the band's name...i was all in...i mean...who hasn't experienced that?...i still do...i mean...you're sitting in the break room at work...and the "special" girl receptionist comes into the room...it takes everything you have to approach the table she's sitting at...and then to drop the note in front of her that took you hours to write the night before and then run off to the handicapped stall in the bathroom with the self-confidence of knowing what you just did...and all of the courage...maaaaan...that in itself could lead to some (one sided) nervous sex...and maybe if you're lucky...the note itself to lead to some two sided nervous sex

but i'm getting away from the task at hand

that being the music

in the email he'd sent me...he mentioned that the first 2 songs were a little on the harsh side while songs 3 and 5 were more on the "poppy/easier"side...and then i got all like "oh maaaaan...what am i getting myself into?" as pictures of bands such as (actually...i'm not even gonna sully the good name this blog has by bringing in the visions i had going through my head)...as soon as i started listening to it all of that went away (even during songs 3 and 5)....and as i continued listening...4 bands popped into my head: devo/lightning bolt/godheadsilo/need new body (whom they share a home turf with)

and that in itself makes quite the combination

i fucking love what this band is doing...they feel the same way about music as i do: finding a rhythm in anything...be it through monotony or feedback (sonic youth does that as well) and going with it...there's needs to be more of this type of stuff happening...they self-released the album...they play instruments they made themselves

i could see this as getting picked up by a label such as skin graft (fitting along side of the flying luttenbachers and that ilk)

even the band's "poppy/easier" side kinda comes off sounding like old school godflesh

so ok....maybe more than 4 bands come to mind

and i feel that i can't finish this without mentioning the band's 3 member...he goes by the name of bill (what part does he play in the band?...i'm not really sure...but i'm sure he fits in nicely amongst the daves)

and you should feel free to also go over to their space and drop them a line...become their friends...get in on the ground floor before it all goes down,bro...and tell them that SGM sent you

Cop Shoot Cop - 5 Song Demo

For a long time I assumed the name "Cop Shoot Cop" was a description of two police officers in an altercation. You know, one police officer discharging his sidearm on another police officer. Seemed to make perfect sense.

Well, turns out it's not a description of two law dogs unloading on each other, it's a description of a drug addicts day. Cop drugs, shoot drugs, cop more drugs.

I guess that makes sense too.

This is their first demo. It's rough around the edges, but if you like Cop Shoot Cop then you can handle things being rough around the edges. Also, if you liked those Shithaus demos, you should like this as well.
