We (Anika, Janina and I) went to the musical 42nd street which was quite good. It was put on by 3rd year students at WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts). Afterwards we went to Little Creatures..oh I'm going to miss that place..for their amazing hamburgers.

I took a panorama of the court in which I've stayed in Australia since February 2. It's a pretty awesome place..my room is on the right side in the far corner - Unit 12, Room 4. I reckon this is the best court ever...this is where most of the most memorable events of my stay happened! I'll miss you all...

More Spiders! and Perth!

Well I found another spider, and took a few shots of Perth at night and the awesome movie theaters they have here.

Spider #2..this one's name is Fred.

I found him in the sink in the morning, he was pretty scared and tried to hide. I caught him, took some pictures and set him free before the girls could vacuum him up.

So, I am up late blogging again. I can't seem to sleep so I shall blog a few things that have been happenin'. Nothing too exciting besides a lot of uni work going on. Everybody is just finishing up assignments and then the dreaded examination period comes. I'm not too worried actually...should be just fine.

The days are passing and I am trying to make sure I see everything I want to see in Perth before I head back to Canada! It'll be a while before I dare take another 30 hour flight over to this small island...especially with all the people I have to now go visit in other parts of the world.

Usually my posts are focused on a particular event, well not this one. I've been pretty tied up with Uni work lately, all these deadlines and my prior slacking has caught up to me. Luckily (the school work) will all be done June 16th. That also means I'll be leaving Perth soon :( however, as you'll notice from this post, the weather is going down hill. It's your turn to rub it in Canada!

Bugs!

We found this in our kitchen this arvo. Of course, I had to catch it to get a better picture! This little bugger is called an Orange Spider Wasp.
They can get up to 3.5cm long and for food they just attack spiders which are often bigger than they are and can be seen dragging them along the ground after stinging it to paralyze it.
They make burrows in the ground, and usually nest alone, not like bees.

Return to Canada!

As some of you may know, I've booked my flight back home. On June 24th, 2009 I'm leaving all my new wonderful friends (from all over the world) whom I've met in Australia and going home to all my wonderful friends back there. So many awesome people. Anyway, enough sappiness.

I'll be flying in high class economy on Air New Zealand. I leave Perth at 7:30pm on the 24th and fly to Auckland, New Zealand, where I get to spend the whole day exploring..I arrive there at 6am on the 25th.

At 9:30pm on the 25th I get on a flight to LA, and I arrive at 2:30PM on the 25th. Yes, time travel...I go back 7 hours in time. Actually, the flight is 17 hours (24-7 = 17). Lots of sleepin' to look forward too.

A few hours in LA, then to Vancouver where I then get on a ferry with all my 100lbs (46kgs for you aussies) of luggage and go to Nanaimo to visit my family for the weekend!

The 29th, I head back to land...spend the day and night with my friends (Alex & Kama) in Vancouver and fly home on the 30th and land at 3:25pm.

So, I'm also going to put countdowns here...It's mainly so I know how much time I have to spend with the awesome people here, and how much I have to wait to see my awesome friends back home again - I'm so torn.

This is a bit weird, because there are two time zones, so I need two different sets of count downs...one Perth time, and one Calgary time...here goes:

Rottnest Island!

Rottnest "Rotto" Island is so awesome! It's 19km east of Fremo so instead of swimming we took the ferry there. You can bike around the whole island, It's only about 24km round trip! But we opted for the shorter trek of around 15km.

We made it to a few beaches and found some Quokka which look like a cross between a rat and a kangaroo. They are pretty cute, very soft and timid and they don't bite but all they want is your food and if you don't have any they go on to the next person or try to dig into your backpack.

After we finished biking we had some time to spend on the beach before we went back to Fremo, we found some pretty cool animals there...see below :)

Quokka!
They are only found on islands in Western Australia! Some people will tell you they are only found on Rottnest, but they lie :) We should have stuffed one in our backpack..or maybe two. Their baby's are also called Joey's.
They are almost as tall as Janina.

We were all done biking the island and had to wait an hour for our ferry (we didn't want to be late because we almost missed it in the morning) so we found a nearby beach and also found these cool animals.

A Pelican...yep that close. He was searching for food..there was tons of little fish around.

AQWA: Aquarium of Western Australia

AQWA was pretty cool, I went with Angiolina. We did lunch in Hillary's Boat Harbour at The Breakwater which was a pretty nice place, food was good and so was the view and the weather. Then off to AQWA with full stomachs, so many cool things like Cuttlefish, Jellyfish, Salt Water Crocodiles, Nemo (Clown Fish), Tortoises, to mention a few...I'm just going to post a bunch of small pictures because I can't decide..they're all so colourful.

Sydney! Blue Mountains

We went to the Blue Mountains on April 18th, it is a day trip from Sydney which started bright and early. Their was lots of hiking involved but the views were pretty awesome. Got to see some Kangaroos, eat some meat pies and see the famous Three Sisters.

The famous Three Sisters...

The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe.

These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry.

The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle.

As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

Funny enough, they are eroding as I write this and will eventually be gone...

Sydney!

Sydney is the largest city in Australia. It has a population of 4.34 million and covers 12,145 km2. It is 3970km from Perth where I am studying. Sydney is the 15th most expensive city to live in the world. I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be, I actually liked Melbourne a lot more. Don't get me wrong, Sydney does have it's features, but it felt like a really big city, everything was very busy and the transit system is very dirty. Maybe I'm just being spoiled in Perth.

The first night I got a really bad taste of Sydney, some aboriginal was pretty rude along with the transit worker who couldn't speak loud enough because his chin was in the way. We met up with our flatmates and Anand's peeps and that improved the situation.

We stayed at the Wake Up! Sydney Central hostel. We got a 2 bed room for Anand and I to share, it was fine but I think I'm over the age of hosteling it. Even though we had our own room the atmosphere just wasn't for me, not to mention that I think the place was suffering from a mold problem or something like that. I guess you get what you pay for. Hotel next time!

The morning after we arrived we did the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb! It was pretty awesome. It was opened in 1932 and weighs 39,000 tons. It's span is 1,650 feet and the summit is 440 feet above mean sea level. It didn't feel that high but we were secured to the bridge and there were stairs. The view was amazing. We couldn't take cameras up, so this is the only photo we have - the rest is memories.

Anika and I at Bungalo 8 where we tried to all go clubbing. Anand didn't get in. We weren't there long but it was fun!

Kangaroo! You eat it rare or else it's too chewy. Pretty tough meat. I would pick an Alberta Steak over it anyday! I Love Alberta Beef!

Sydney! Bondi Beach

I didn't get a chance to fight any sharks at the famous Bondi Beach, but it was a decent day. A bit windy, but what can you do. I can tell why it's so popular for surfing, as well as shark attacks..if I was a shark I would look for food there too.

About Bondi Beach
It is about one kilometre long and receives many visitors throughout the year. Surf Life Saving Australia has given different hazard ratings to Bondi Beach in 2004. While the northern end has been rated a gentle 4 (with 10 as the most hazardous), the southern side is rated as a 7 due to a famous rip current known as the "Backpackers' Express" because of its proximity to the bus stop, and the unwillingness of tourists to walk the length of the beach to safer swimming - such as us...

The south end of the beach is generally reserved for surfboard riding...oops. Yellow and red flags define safe swimming areas, and you are advised to swim between them.

There is an underwater shark net shared, during the summer months, with other beaches along the southern part of the coast.

On average, each year, Lifeguards rescue about 2,500 people and they even have their own television show in Australia!

Melbourne! Great Ocean Road & The Twelve Apostles

This place was amazing! The drive was about 3.5 hours from Melbourne with a stop in Apollo Bay for lunch. The views along the Great Ocean Road are amazing.. so many nice beaches and cliffs to stop and take in the scenery. There are a ton of photos in the slide show, as well as some cool videos.

How they were formed
The rock stacks are the temporary remnants of a retreating limestone coastline, under constant attack by the sea. Cliff faces are being eroded at the rate of about two centimetres each year.

1. Cliff face erosion

Wave action erodes the cliff face,
leaving harder rock as headlands.

2. Caves & arches
Waves eat away the rock at sea level, forming caves on each side of the headland. The caves eventually meet up, forming an arch.

3. Stacks formed
Over time the arch collapses into the sea, leaving a rock ‘stack’.

4. Further undercutting
Further undercutting by waves, and opening up of vertical cracks in the rock by rain and saltwater, gradually reduce the stack to a low platform or reef.
This occurred spectaculary in 2006 making world-wide news.

On Sunday, April 12th we went to the National Gallery of Victoria, they had all sorts of art and sculptures from all regions of the world. They even had a contemporary section (It all looked like Ikea furniture).

Melbourne!

W e arrived in Melbourne around 9:00pm on Saturday, April 11th. Falen picked us up at the airport and took us back to her place to drop our things off. Then we went out for some awesome Italian pizza and found the Starbucks!!! mmmm how I missed Starbucks!

Perthian-Starbucks Coffee Showdown - Results!

I have recently had quite a few Perthians tell me that Starbucks coffee is NOT the best!?! Before today I never would have questioned the fact. I'm still skeptical because they don't have a Starbucks here, so how can they know its full glory? However, I'm open minded and so I need closure.

So, over the next little while I'm going to go about tasting and comparing coffee from all the different stores I am told to go to in Perth. Don't worry, I'm still stocking up on Starbucks while I'm in Melbourne & Sydney in case of the likely event that it comes out on top.

So far I've been told the following cafe's are the best..if you have more I should try, tell me..

To compare the different coffees, I have filled in the table fully:

I like my coffee strong, so the stronger it is the better the score.

Summary
Starbucks is the best. Anand and I even had a discussion that went something like this, Anand: "I've always wondered if someone put two cups of coffee in front of me and said "this one's Starbucks", if I would just choose the Starbucks one just because of that even if the other one tasted better?" Me: "If that was the case, how did they go from one little store to a giant business in Canada & the US? People had to think their coffee was better than the competitors even before they had the Starbucks name and image in order to grow the business. They also must have to do taste tests like you mentioned when introducing new blends and roasts of coffee right?" Anand: "I guess that's true." If you can't agree with this reasoning then feel free to comment and if you have any more cafe's I HAVE to try, please tell me!

Also, none of you, unless you have been to Canada have tried Tim Hortons coffee, which is a much closer second than Coffee & Co. - but we'll still give them the Silver.

I'm stocking up on Starbucks in Melbourne & Sydney =)

AFL! West Coast Eagles vs. Port Adelaide

AFL football game! It was the West Coast Eagles home opener against Port Adelaide (who sucks). It was about 28 degrees out and we were in the sun the whole time..it got hot. The Eagles were awesome, they won 125-75.

The playing field (as pictured on the right), which may be approximately 150m (or more) long goal to goal and approximately 135 m (or more) wide is HUGE. You can see curvature of the earth the thing is so long, and these guys (or should I say machines) do run from end to end. An American football field is 109.7 m × 48.8 m...pfh...

My Birthday!

I had an amazing birthday! The only thing that could have topped the evening was to add all my friends from back home into the mix. We went out on April 3rd, and at midnight had some tequila shots..¿my idea somehow?

We went to Ruby Room and the Burswood Casino. They were both a lot of fun, we went clubbing and then to the casino where I doubled my $50 investment...and later lost it.

The girls and Anand got my name put on the TV saying "Happy Birthday". So awesome.

Instead of giving you a long story about how amazing this night was, I think I can say that this photo summarizes it perfectly.

Michael and I went to City Beach. It's just south of Scarborough beach and just north of Cottesloe beach. Ahh beaches everywhere!

I'm Torn

I would rather be on the beach. I have so much damned homework to do. 2 assignments and a statistics test due by Sunday at 11:59pm. It is 32 degrees out and I want to not do my homework and just go to the beach. Can I? no..I'm way too much of a geek to do something like that.

I will go to the beach on Monday, I don't care if it's only 25 degrees.

I went to UWA today to represent the University of Calgary at their exchange fair. The campus is AMAZING. U of C is just starting an exchange agreement with UWA so I could have went there next semester!! oh well, everything happens for a reason..the campus alone is incentive enough for me to want to do a Masters.
