Începe Spelling Championship 2012!!

A mai trecut un an şi iată că ne pregătim din nou să pornim în căutarea celor mai talentaţi şi celor mai dedicaţi cursanţi din rândul grupelor de Juniori 2, Juniori 3 şi Juniori 4 care să se înfrunte şi să câştige premiul cel mare al competiţie Spelling Championship 2012. Anul acesta competiţia este şi mai strânsă, pentru că numărul de cursanţi ambiţioşi a crescut, odată cu deschiderea celui de-al treilea sediu din Dorobanţi, aşa că trebuie să ne adunăm toate forţele şi să ne pregătim de marea competiţie. Vă prezentăm mai jos care este desfăşurătorul concursului şi vă vom ţine la curent cu toate noutăţile de pe parcurs!

Competiţia este împărţită în trei runde:

Runda 1 – la nivel de grupă

Runda 2 – la nivel de sediu

Runda 3 – marea întrecere, între toţi participanţii, pe nivel.

Runda I are loc în perioada 5- 9 martie 2012. În cursul săptămânii 12-16 martie se anunţă rezultatele l runda I iar din fiecare clasă se aleg primele două punctaje.

Runda II are loc pe 2 (Juniori 2), 3 (Juniori 3), 4 (Juniori 4) aprilie 2012. În runda a doua vor intra primii 2 clasați din fiecare grupă. Toţi cei care se califică pentru runda a doua vor primi Certificat de participare la Spelling Championship, în care se menţionează scorul obţinut şi faptul că s-au calificat pentru runda a doua.

Runda III are loc pe 24 mai 2012. În runda finală vor participa primii 5 clasaţi la nivel de an pentru fiecare sediu. Aşadar, vom avea 15 finalişti pentru fiecare nivel, dintre care se vor alege câte 3 câştigători (premiile I, II si III). Toţi finaliştii vor fi invitaţi la festivitatea de premiere organizată pe 3 iunie, la librăria Cărtureşti, în Grădina Verona.

Premiile oferite pentru locurile I, II şi III sunt:

Locul I: Curs de vară gratuit la Shakespeare School

Locul II: Curs de vară la Shakespeare School cu o reducere de 50%

Locul III: Curs de vară la Shakespeare School cu o reducere 25 %, la care se adaugă cărţi în limba engleză şi alte premii surpriză.

Book Review: Lord of the Flies

Analizând cărţile dintr-o librărie mai zilele trecute, mi-am adus aminte de una dintre cărţile care mi-au plăcut foarte mult în şcoală, Împăratul Muştelor, a lui William Golding. Nu ştiu dacă aţi citit-o sau nu, dar m-am gândit să vă spun azi câteva cuvinte despre ea şi mai ales să vă împărtăşesc din bucuria re-lecturii ei.

Pe de altă parte, nu demult, am observat că elevii noştri de CAE o au în bibliografia pentru examenul din vara aceasta, la partea de Writing, alături de The Lighthouse, a lui P.D. James, aşa că articolul acesta este scris şi cu gândul la ei. J

Înainte de a vă spune despre ce este vorba în carte şi de ce îmi place, trebuie să vă menţionez că autorul, William Golding, este câştigător al unui premiu Nobel pentru literatură, iar romanul a fost plasat în lista celor mai bune romane ale secolului trecut. Deşi aparent simplistă, acţiunea romanului se bazează pe aventurile unor băieţi de 13 ani, unicii supravieţuitori ai unui accident de avion. Fiind singuri pe o insulă, ei încearcă să se organizeze, unii fiind responsabili cu vânătoarea şi mâncarea, alţii cu construirea unui adăpost, iar alţii cu menţinerea focului permanent aprins pentru a putea fi observaţi de posibilele vase care traversează marea. Însă, lucrurile iau o turnură total diferită, când în cadrul tribului lor apare sentimentul de pericol, aşa numita „fiară” care se presupune că există pe insulă. Din acest moment, societatea pe care ei au construit-o pe modelul celei civilizate din care au plecat, începe să se autodistrugă, şi până şi cei doi raţionali din grup, Ralph şi Piggy, cedează în faţa instinctelor şi a simţurilor primare.

Romanul este în realitate o alegorie adresată tendinţei umane de a reveni la formele primare de manifestare, instinctele, atunci când condiţiile de viaţă devin limitate: izolarea, lipsa hranei, lipsa reperelor temporale şi comunicaţionale. Totul în roman ne duce cu gândul la omul preistoric, guvernat de dorinţa de a conduce şi a se hrăni.

Cartea este fascinantă cu o acţiune laborios construită, în spatele căreia se ascunde o dramă a fiinţei umane. V-o recomand nu ca pe o lectură de şcoală, ci ca pe una de plăcere.

Tips for the FCE exam – Part 1

Dear teens,

Those of you who are already taking this course know that it’s no piece of cake to deal with the course requirements!

You probably know by now that the FCE exam ( standing for First Certificate in English) comprises of five papers :

Reading (60 minutes)
Writing (80 minutes)
Use of English (45 minutes)
Listening (40 minutes)
Speaking (15 minutes) …that this exam can be both paper-based or computer-based and the scores can be A, B, C (pass), D, E or U (fail) or that it can grant recognition of B2 / Upper intermediate level.

But how many of you are aware of the fact that this exam tests not your knowledge of the English language but also a series of cognitive skills that you are expected to develop during the exam preparation?

Well…in much simpler terms in order to pass this exam you have to prove two things: that you’re smart and that you are …quite mature! What I mean by this is that you should approach this exam like a grown-up and not hoping that if you don’t solve homework or skip classes no one will notice!

Before sitting this exam you will have to prove that you can be an effective autonomous learner. A fancy term, indeed, which actually comes down to a simple and quite ‘commonsenseical’ TO DO – List :

Accept the responsibility of taking the FCE
Become familiar with the expectations of the exam
Do a great deal of homework
Revise constantly
Make effective use of course materials (such as the course book and practice exams)
Develop the exam skills required by each part of the exam

Brainy Camp – 6 zile de buna dispozitie si invatare

La noi, la romani este o vorba : “ tot ce-i bun se termina repede”. Si cei mici si cei mari cam la fel discutau intre ei, in autocar, la intoarcerea catre Bucuresti …

Tabara Brainy Camp a reprezentat o experienta superba, de 6 zile, in care inteligenta emotionala aplicata, schiul si buna dispozitie au facut casa buna impreuna.

- 6 zile in care prietenia ne-a insotit peste tot ;

- 6 zile in care cu totii am regasit : respectarea regulilor, lucrul in echipa, politetea, prietenia, autocunoasterea, faptul de a renunta sa parasti colegii, sa inveti sa pierzi fara sa te superi, intelegerea ca nu este potrivit vorbitul urat cu ceilalti precum si vorbitul neintrebat, importanta vorbitului pe rand, aplicarea bunelor maniere acasa si
in societate, importanta autodisciplinei, punctualitatea.

- 6 zile in care schiul ne-a aratat ca sportul si amuzamentul isi dau mana pe

partie si ne arata ca se poate ;

- 6 zile in care petrecerile, karaoke-ul, dansul si jocurile de dezvoltare personala au facut echipa zilnic

Daca ar fi sa am doar o fraza la dispozitie, in care sa descriu ce am trait impreuna in tabara Brainy Camp de la Predeal , ar fi cam asa :

“A fost odata ca niciodata , Brainy Camp , o minunata poveste de 6 zile unde toata lumea isi doreste sa revina … “

Asa cum spune si Matthieu Ricard in cartea sa FERICIREA , aceasta este un drept cu care ne nastem si avem nevoie sa cunoastem o cale de a-l valorifica.

Tot ce am trait in aceasta tabara ne da puterea sa mergem mai departe si va asteptam sa ne insotiti si in continuare in aceasta calatorie catre … sufletul copiilor nostri !

What’s the Conversation Club all about?

Well, it’s about having fun speaking English! Children get to develop their fluency in English and gain confidence as they participate in tons of interactive activities that challenge them. The Conversation Club also prepares children to sit for their Trinity Initial Stage, YLE and PET Speaking Exams in a very dynamic atmosphere. In a nutshell, children come once a fortnight and practise what they’ve learned in class without going through boring drills.

What will the children learn by the end of this school year?

They will learn how to:

Talk about themselves, their family and friends.
Talk about animals and pets e.g. what their favourite animal is, describe their pet etc.
Talk about food and their favourite dishes.
Talk about the weather and the seasons of the year.
Talk about daily routines, chores and hobbies.
Party at Halloween e.g. what Halloween is all about with its characters and games.
Talk about sports e.g. what their favourite sport is, what the famous national and international sports are etc.
Talk about jobs e.g. what they would like to be when they grow up, what their parents do etc.
Have an English Christmas Party e.g. talk about food, decorations and what they do during Christmas etc.
Talk about their homes and local areas e.g. describe their homes, neighbourhood etc.
Talk about travelling e.g. what their favourite places to visit are, ask and follow directions etc.
Talk about means of transport.
Talk about festivals and special occasions e.g. national and international festivals.
Talk about entertainment e.g. their favourite film, book, movie star and singer.
Talk about holidays e.g. their favourite holiday destination and experience.

Our classes are multi-skill classes that incorporate other skills besides speaking such as listening, reading and drawing. We guarantee a good time for all English-loving children!

Santa Claus interview

Anna is a 15-year old student; she lives in Romania and loves Christmas. And English. She sent a letter to Santa, earlier this year, to kindly ask him to answer a few questions in an interview. And Surprise! Surprise! Santa found the time to talk to her, right before the big night, when he’s always on call.

Anna: Dear Santa, it’s a miracle to have you with us this holiday season, as it is to have you each season. And I am particularly happy you could find time to speak to me tonight, I know your workshop is on fire and the elves are working hard to finish all the toys before Christmas Eve.

Santa: It’s a pleasure to meet you, always happy to talk to children who trust in the spirit of Christmas. So, what did you want to ask me?

Anna: Santa, I hardly have time to do my homework and read a few books, how come you have time to read letters from children all over the world?

Santa: Well, that is part of the miracle of Holiday Season. I get the letters, but then I know all the children anyways, so I know who has been good and who hasn’t… Do you think I rest, the rest of the year? No, I’m always on duty… I go to their windows and watch, on invisible mode, of course. And a few days before Christmas all I do is finish up my “revision” exercises, to use your language…

Anna: And how come you are able to make it in time and get to every single child?

Santa: Well, I have my faithful nine reindeer. All nine of them are magic. I would not be able to make it otherwise… I used to have a lot of accidents and crash into trees, right before meeting Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He’s the one who guides me through the darkness.

Anna: What impresses you most in the letters?

Santa: What I find amazing is that there are children, who do not want toys; they want a brother and sister… or they want world peace… It makes me sad that unfortunately, I cannot always fulfil their dream, because it’s not always up to me. All I do is try to help them understand the miracles in their lives and the strength to carry on. And maybe, one day, they will dream I am giving them an encouragement hug. I just wish they kept the Christmas Spirit in their hearts as they turned into adults….

Anna: What is the most important thing that people should remember about Christmas?

Santa: I believe there is a miracle in each of us. We all carry a Divine sparkle, the Holy Ghost exist in every single one of us. Christmas is magic because it is the time we should all be grateful for what we’ve got and pay it forward. It is a time to forgive and forget, and be joyful for the gift of life, just like God gave us His Only Son, as a present to humanity, on the 25^th of December. But to tell you the truth, Christmas should be all year round, we should have the same attitude at all times.

Thank you Santa, may you always be as joyful as you are right now. I will leave you know carry on your amazing duties.

Speaking Maximizer: It’s time to talk the talk!

Students who have enrolled this year in the Trinity 6 and Preview to FCE courses at Shakespeare School get to benefit from a speaking class, and that is the Speaking Maximizer! The Speaking Maximizer classes are held once every four weeks in the Dorobanti branch of Shakespeare School.

What do the students actually do in these monthly classes?

They learn to speak English fluently and confidently.
They participate in many fun speaking activities that incorporate the grammar and vocabulary they have learned in their regular classes.
They prepare for their upcoming oral examinations (see below for more details).

How do the Speaking Maximizer classes help the Trinity 6 students prepare for their Speaking Examination?

The syllabus for the Trinity 6 Speaking Maximizer course has been designed to prepare them for the 2 parts in their Trinity 6 Speaking Examination which are:

A discussion of a topic of their choice.
A conversation on 2 subject areas selected by the examiner.

Thus, the Trinity 6 students will learn how to do the following by the end of this school year:

Give a successful oral presentation on a topic of their choice.
Have a conversation on the following conversational topics:

How do the Speaking Maximizer classes help the Preview to FCE students prepare for their Bilingual Oral Examination?

The syllabus for the Preview to FCE Speaking Maximizer course has been designed to prepare them for the 2 parts in their bilingual oral examination. Thus, the Preview to FCE course students will learn how to do the following by the end of this school year:

Read a text and answer questions about it.
Deliver a 3-4 minute speech by:

a) Stating their opinion towards a topic/an assertion/a quote etc.

b) Arguing for and against a certain topic/assertion/quote etc.

c) Describing a person (e.g. describing their best friend from childhood).

d) Describing a place (e.g. describing their ideal holiday resort).

e) Telling a story.

Serbari de iarna ALTFEL la Shakespeare School!

Desi temperaturile si vremea de afara nu sunt cele obisnuite pentru acest moment al anului, la Shakespeare School , spiritul Craciunului isi face deja simtita prezenta. Anul acesta nu doar vremea de afara este ALTFEL ci si serbarile noastre.Petrecerile de Craciun in toi in aceasta perioada, au devenit pentru noi un prilej al dialogului deschis in sala de curs!

Mai precis, am transformat serbarile de Craciun intr-o perioada a portilor deschise, intr-un prilej de a ne intalni cursanti-parinti-profesori si de a ne petrece impreuna o sedinta de curs! Iar surprizele s-au tinut lant: colinde si piese de Craciun in limba engleza, cadouri, poze, voie buna si jocuri interactive la care copiii au participat alaturi de parinti!

In plus, impreuna cu editura Fischer International, am organizat expozitii, cu vanzare, de carti atat in limba romana cat si engleza. Si pentru ca tot pomeneam surprizele oferite cursantilor, prin cumpararea de carti, copiii participa automat la tombola festiva ce le poate aduce un cadou in plus cu ocazia sarbatorilor de iarna!

La Shakespeare School surprizele nu se termina niciodata asa ca ramaneti alaturi de noi si in 2012!

Sarbatori de iarna fericite si un an nou plin de impliniri!
