Class 3 Quarterfinal – Glendale Hosts Rock Bridge Saturday

The Class 3 Quarterfinal, and the opportunity to play in the Final 4 in Blue Springs next week, falls to Glendale and Rock Bridge for the second year in a row. It will be hard for the rematch to live up to last year’s game, at least for Falcon’s fans – Rock Bridge soccer season ends with narrow loss

In a physical battle, a seemingly harmless, high-arching lob from Molly Brewer with 8:47 left in the second overtime turned into the difference-maker as the wind carried the ball into the goal area and a leaping Levy couldn’t clear it away.

Game Day – Saturday May 26th

Glendale reached the Final Four in 2009, freshman year for seniors Brewer and Opfer, where they lost 1-5 to Incarnate Word in a semifinal match. IWA went on to win the title that year, 2-1 over Lee’s Summit North (will we see a reprise this year?). The Rock Bridge seniors reached the Final Four as sophomores in 2010, finishing 4th following losses to Pattonville and Cor Jesu, beating Nixa in OT in the Quarterfinals. Last year it was Glendale’s turn again, who following an 0-8 loss to eventual champions Liberty, went on to earn their first ever win over Incarnate Word (IWA) 2-0 to earn 3rd place, still the best finish for a Class 3 girls team from Central or Southwest Missouri.

Class 1 Quarterfinal – Springfield Catholic hosts Sacred Heart Saturday

TIME CHANGE – the game will now be played at 10:00 am on Saturday!

The Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish seniors are hoping to do what no other senior class has done before them – reach four straight Final 4 state tournaments. Coinciding with the move to three classes from two, this graduating class can place their own stamp on the history of this program with a win on Saturday.

What: Class 1 Quarterfinal
When: Saturday May 26, 10:00 am (was 1:00 pm)
Where: Springfield Catholic High School

The winner will face off against either Principia or Orchard Farm who kick off at 9:00 am Saturday. I’ve seen both teams this year, as well as the other two St Louis area quarterfinalists, and will offer an update next week if the Irish advance.

With today’s Copa del Rey wrapping League play in Europe, the focus will turn to the European Championships. On this continent, it is World Cup Qualification that will hold our attention. The weekend offers plenty of both as the following list attests! My favorite place to enjoy a game in Springfield is Farmer’s Gastropub but they will be closed Sunday-Monday for Memorial Day.

Graham Zusi is not part of the team, unfortunate for him but Sporting KC will be happy to have him back. Closer to home I know there is a Springfield coaching contingent in Jacksonville that will be part of the record-breaking Florida crowd, preparing to support Scotland. Can you guess who that might include?

Nixa Middle School Captures 1st League Title

Congratulations to the Nixa Middle School girls. The team broke through to win their first Championship Game in Girls history.

It was a 3-0 shutout over Pershing Thursday night.
