Remember the story of Tim achieving stellar results under the ‘5Q’ boss?

Tim had been struggling with his sales target for a long time. He was very worried about the upcoming performance evaluation, especially with the arrival of a new boss. To his surprise, the evaluation took only 15 minutes and he had a lot to think about. A month later, Tim not only finished the back-logged quota but also achieved his target for the next month.

How did the new boss achieve this turn-around? During the performance evaluation, the boss simply asked 5 questions:

Tim, how is it going? (looked at the sales data)
What you are learning?
What are your goals?
How can I help?
How am I doing as a helper? (rating 1-10)

This week, let’s try to use the 5Qs when we need to ‘boss’ someone do his job.

River Hongbao 2010 will feature local performers and performers from Chengdu, China with many interesting cultural activities such as Chinese Lantern-Riddles and competitions.

River Hongbao has been Singapore’s annual signature event to usher in the Chinese New Year since 1987. Immerse in the rich Chinese culture and festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year with the fairyland of lighting decorations, savour mouth-watering food from food street and cooking demonstrations, purchase souvenirs from the handicraft and specialty stalls, have fun at the carnival and enjoy traditional and contemporary Chinese song and dance performances.

iNets helps you pay your bills on mobile phones

NETS launched iNETS for wireless payment. Pay your utilities, credit card or phone bills, buy movie tickets, pay for season parking…using iNETS with your mobile phone or iNETS kiosk.

NETS is hoping to make wireless payments more accessible with the launch of iNets, which allows people to pay for things through iNets kiosks at MRT stations or their mobile phones with a downloaded application.

For now, 15 iNETS service providers including SingTel, StarHub, UOB, OCBC, Cathay Cineplexes and SP Services are tapping the system, and Nets is looking to get more merchants’ support.

Things that users could soon pay for via iNets include airline tickets and tours, food and beverage, motoring services, prepaid top-ups, and e-books.

iNETs service could even be extended to ATM and cable television set-top boxes in the future.

Republic Poly Girl Scandal! Again?

SPH STOMP site “shared” a republic poly (RP) scandal of this girl who is posing with her chest exposed in a series of online pictures taken with her boyfriend.

This is not the first time our poly girls are so generous sharing their private lives. This time, RP scandal does kinda make RP “famous”. What does republic poly say about it? Proud or shamed?

The scandal does make some people stereotype poly girls while others argue:

think that the statement that suggests moral education is outrages. Students have already gone through all the moral education that they need in their secondary school life and it would be redundant to reemphasize on it in tertiary education. It is only one couple that have done that and who knows what age the girl is, stop stereotyping tertiary students as a whole. You can do so when the rest of the polytechnics cheers for her.

Some users think she is a victim,

c’mon people, she is the victim. These photos are in their private blog (pw protected). Can you guys(those who are giving negative comments) stop commenting rubbish here? Get a life please! Stop bothering her and her bf, stop adding fake information can? Hopeless leh you guys seriously.

NLB NewspaperSG: Singapore’s own digital library

NLB has launched NewspaperSG website where you can search digital archive of newspapers published between 1831-2006 or find information on over 200 newspaper titles in the National Library’s microfilm collection.

NewspaperSG is an online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malaya newspapers. You can also preview some issues of upcoming newspapers that will be available in NewspaperSG.

If you do not get many results, you may choose to do a fuzzy search instead. Fuzzy searching will find a word even if it is misspelled. It can be very useful when searching text generated using OCR software, as there are varying levels of accuracy depending on the quality of the original newspaper or microfilm. For example, a fuzzy search for singapore will find sincapore or sinoapore.

You can get an un-watermarked copy of the newspaper article from the multimedia stations at NLB libraries. Prints are charged at $1.00 per A4 page.

Home users will not be able to view articles from third-party news sources (such as Reuters, AFP and AP) that are published during the last 70 years. Users are also unable to view Straits Times articles published after 1989.

You can also find online archives of current Singapore newspapers in databases subscribed by the library. To access these databases, go to NLB eResources look for “Browse By Type”, and click on “eNewspapers”. You may wish to note that access to the Singapore newspapers in these databases is only available to patrons using the multimedia media stations at NLB libraries or the NLB-PUBLIC network at the National Library Building.

Less Health Subsidies for Singapore PR

Government has decided to reduce health subsidies given to Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs) by 10% points.

Singapore citizens are still entitled to an 80% subsidy for a Class C ward. But PRs will be entitled to 60% of cost, down from 70%.

From January 1 2011, the subsidy for PRs in Class B2 and C wards in public hospitals as well as specialist outpatient clinics will be cut by 5% points. It will be cut another 5% in July.

The subsidy for PRs in the intermediate and long-term care sector, like community hospitals and nursing homes, will be cut by 5% points. Another five percentage-point reduction will apply to community hospitals and nursing homes from January 2012.

New policies may make more PR convert to citizens; or, maybe some will choose to go back to their home country feeling separated from the community? What do you think?

Last year 4,000 enthusiastic walkers, joggers and runners of all ages took part in the Safari Zoo Run, the first-ever run at the Night Safari and Singapore Zoo to remember Singapore Zoo’s icon, Ah Meng.It was a non-competitive run that took runners on a 3.2km route inside the Night Safari and a 3km portion through the Singapore Zoo.

Circle Line Singapore from Bartley to Dhoby Ghaut to Open 17 April

The second phase of the Circle Line (CCL) from Bartley to Dhoby Ghaut will open for passenger service on 17 April 2010 (Saturday).

The 11-kilometre long stretch comprising 11 stations – Tai Seng, MacPherson, Paya Lebar, Dakota, Mountbatten, Stadium, Nicoll Highway, Promenade, Esplanade, Bras Basah and Dhoby Ghaut – will start operations almost a year after the five CCL stations from Marymount to Bartley opened to the public last May.

About 200,000 people are expected to use the 16 stations from Dhoby Ghaut to Marymount every day.
