You’ll see more from this photo shoot in the upcoming weeks.  But here is one of my favorite portraits.  Mixing her softball playing (she’s a catcher) days with her black dress makes for a striking image.  It shows two sides to her.  It’s formal…and fun.

The best part of the photograph was when she was looking at our 31″ monitor at the proofs and hearing her reaction to this senior picture.  Now, she hasn’t made her final selections yet.  But I suspect we’ll find this senior photo in there.  Don’t you?

As you scroll through the pages of Senior Photos Kansas City you may begin to get a sense of my style.  I’m not much of a fluff or overly glamorous photographer.  I firmly believe that you don’t want senior pictures that will look dated five, ten and twenty years from now.  You will want senior portraits that reflect who you are, or more precisely, who you were at that time of your life.  This young lady is turning into a beautiful woman.  She’s also an accomplished softball player.  It’s all there for her to bring smile to her face when she or her parents look back on this senior picture.

The Photoshop Reality

I’m pretty good at Photoshop.  I can shave a few pounds.  Help you lose that acne or those pesky braces.  Make the eyes brighter.  The teeth brighter.  The hair more vibrant.  Remove that background “thingy” you don’t want.  But when is enough, enough?  Don’t get me wrong.  I believe that a light touch in many or all of those areas is perfectly acceptable.  But it really bothers me when beautiful young women start wanting me to make them look like someone else.  Almost glowingly glamorous.

Ladies

You need to know that almost each and every one of the models on every magazine cover is touched up.  Big time.  And by professionals that do nothing but touch up the entertainers and models all day, every day.  Don’t believe me?  Check out the link on the photo or click for The Photoshop Effect or  The Magic of Photoshop.  (You may need to be 18 to see The Magic of Photoshop as  there is some insignificant nudity.)

Take care of yourself.  Exercise.  But most importantly, realize how beautiful you really are.  Don’t end up getting some eating disorder because you think you need to look like a model who doesn’t really even look like that anyway!    Don’t worry.  I’ll make you look your best.  But we want you to look like you, right?

Guys

Don’t buy into the magazine woman.  Why?  They don’t exist in real life.  Hey, I’m a guy.  I love to see those women on the magazine covers, too.  They are beautiful.  Not necessarily real.  But beautiful.  Accept the women you are really seeing as real.  You’ll be much happier.

And, yes.  We do touch-up the guys, too.  Everyone needs a little touch up.  The cameras and lenses today pick up every flaw imaginable.  We’re not going to highlight those flaws.  In fact, we’ll help you minimize them.  What I’m trying to say is accept yourself for who you are.  Be the best you can be and be happy with that.  Then a few minor touches seem great.

I’m here to help.  Because everyone wants something a little bit different.  And that’s why I love doing what I do. Everyday is different.  And I love the challenges that each of you brings.  Part of the portrait session might find a young lady in a beautiful dress in a field of flowers or on a downtown park bench.  While the very next series of photos might be a really cool shot of that same young lady playing volleyball.  (Volleyball lends itself to some pretty cool pictures, by the way.)

Safety

First and foremost is the safety of each and every high school senior we photograph.  We will not ask you to do anything that is dangerous or makes you uncomfortable.  If we are driving somewhere you are welcome to take your own car if you feel that would be safer, as well.  And ladies, I will always have an assistant with me (or your parents if you like) so that you will feel comfortable and secure.

Imagination

Let’s get creative.  We’ll take  a few “standards” shots of you.  But I don’t mind pushing the limits of “normal” senior pictures.  Heck, if you don’t like the results you just don’t pick those pictures.  Sometimes new and different works and sometimes it doesn’t.  That’s life in a nutshell.  But either way we’ll have fun.

Fun

Come to take your senior pictures with a good attitude.  A professional photographer can make you look great.  But only you can make you look fantastic!  Did you know energy can be photographed?  I’m telling you it can.  It shows up in your posture, your smiles and your overall look.  We can turn on some fun music.  We can make bad jokes.  Whatever will help you to have a good time.

On that day that the picture below (on the left side) was taken it was cold and very, very rainy.  We went ahead with the senior photo session.  A couple days later the weather was beautiful.  So I went out to the tennis courts at Olathe South and took a picture.  A few hours later the photos were merged and looked good.  At least in my opinion!

We simply cannot believe summer has slipped by so quickly.  If anything, enrollment this last Tuesday reminded us that summer is almost over!  Time to start thinking of school.  And for you high school seniors, it’s time to start thinking about your senior portraits.  I know I’ve already had a couple of Olathe high school seniors (to be) book their photos for August.

When Should I Get My Senior Photos Done?
Over the years I see two peak periods for performing senior portrait sessions.  September and October are very popular months.  And then there is the last minute rush period in April and May.  Either way works fine.  And there really is no right answer.  Just think about what kind of backdrop you want for outdoor settings.  If you like fall colors you better not wait till April!  If you like more “urban” type senior pictures downtown then time of year won’t really matter.  And in fact, the cold of winter can add to the drama of the portrait.

When Should We Book Our Appointments?
Senior pictures are more time intensive than our usual portrait sessions.  So we can’t just do an unlimited number of them.  I recommend booking a couple weeks out.  Even a month or so is great.  Like I said, we already have a couple of our designated time slots filled for August. So don’t wait.

What Are The Costs Involved?
I would suggest jumping over to our senior portrait session pricing page.  We really feel that for the money and quality you will not find a better value.  Many, many Olathe and Gardner Seniors and their families have been very happy.

Can We Personalize Our Senior Pictures?
Can you?  I hope you do!  Listen, the point of senior portraits is to capture who you are today.  Your hopes.  Your dreams.  Your activities.  We like to talk to you first and get an idea of who you are so that we can formulate a plan just for you.  Your ideas, and those of your parents, are not only welcomed but they are encouraged. We’ll get the safe photos.  The tried and true, if you will.  But let’s also take a leap and see if there are any that can capture your essence, as well.

What if I promise not to be away so long?

The young man pictured below is a gold gloves boxer.  We actually took a few of his senior portraits here in our studios and then went to a boxing ring for the rest of his senior picture session.  Pretty cool.  I guess some pretty famous boxers have been in the same ring because of the Ringside boxing guru here in town.  Alas, I digress.  The point is we got to make some pretty cool photographic images that will last a lifetime!
