How to restore panels on Ubuntu?

Step 1:

Delete current panel settings.

rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel

Step 2:

Restart the Gnome panel.

pkill gnome-panel

As an alternative, just restart the computer.

Change file format (Dos/Unix) in Vim

Unix and dos (Windows) use different file format. Even though the latest Vim can detect the file format automatically, sometimes you also need to convert your file to the other format, especially if you are sharing the file with your friends.

Fortunately, in vim you can set the file format using a very simple command.

Change the file format to dos

:set ff=dos

Change the file format to unix

:set ff=unix

Note: You can also add those commands in .vimrc file to make Vim starts with the desired format of file.

Minbar Prayer Times is a free prayer times software for linux.

Installing Minbar on Ubuntu is easy.

$ sudo apt-get install minbar

After the installation process, you can start Minbar Prayer Times from the Accessories menu.

To set the location, click on Preferences, and under the City Details tab, click on “Find City”. You should find your city there. If your city is not available, you can find the latitude and longitude via www.islamicfinder.org, and enter it manually.

Missing Windows “Show Desktop” shortcut icon

If you by mistake deleted the Windows “Show Desktop” shortcut icon in the QuickLunch, you can get it back by creating a text file named “Show Desktop.scf”, and drag it to the QuickLaunch.

This is the content of the “Show Desktop.scf” file, for Windows XP and Vista respectively.

Windows XP

Reduce image file size with GIMP

This is an easy way to reduce image file size. What you have to do is to convert the image mode from RGB to Indexed colours.

In GIMP, click on Image > Mode > Indexed.

Finally, change the “Maximum number of colors” property value from 256 to 16 or 32 as shown in Figure 1.

To upgrade Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 is easy.

First, press Alt+F2 to get the “Run Application” (Figure 1). Type in

update-manager -d

and, click Run.

My VIM .vimrc file for working with Python

Here is the VIM .vimrc file that I use to work with Python.

set nu
set ts=4
set sw=4
set sts=4
set autoindent
set smartindent
set expandtab
set smarttab
autocmd BufRead *.py set smartindent cinwords=if,elif,else,for,while,try,except,finally,def,class
autocmd BufWritePre *.py :%s/\s\+$//e

It will

Display the line number.
Set tab stop to 4.
Enable you to use < and > to indent or unindent a block in visual mode.
Insert spaces instead of tab, when pressing the tab button.
Automatically indent the next line after this keywords: if, elif, else, for, while, try, except, finally, def, class.
Remove all trailing spaces during exit.
