I wouldn't obsess over it. However, if you're curious, you might want to read Gretchen Rubin's blog post, &lt;a href="http://www.happiness-project.com/happiness_project/2009/12/eight-tips-for-knowing-if-youre-being-boring.html"&gt;Eight Tips to Know If You're Being Boring&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Of her eight tips, here are the four that resonated with me:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;div&gt;1. &lt;b&gt;Repeated, perfunctory responses&lt;/b&gt;. A person who repeats, “Oh really? Wow. Oh really? Interesting.” isn't particularly engaged.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;2. &lt;b&gt;Simple questions&lt;/b&gt;. People who are bored ask simple questions. “When did you move?” “Where did you go?” People who are interested ask more complicated questions that show curiosity, not mere politeness.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;3. &lt;b&gt;Interruption&lt;/b&gt;. Although it sounds rude, interruption is actually a good sign, I think. It means a person is bursting to say something, and that shows interest. This finding comes from &lt;a href="http://www.careerxroads.com/"&gt;CareerXroads&lt;/a&gt;, who surveyed 41 companies that employ 1.8 million people collectively.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Why do companies prefer internal candidates?  Hiring managers like candidates who can make an immediate impact.  Internal candidates are more likely to do so because they:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Understand the processes&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Know the people&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Fit with the culture&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;Most importantly, they've already proven themselves on-the-job.  Typically, external candidates only have a resume, the interview, and a few references to demonstrate who they are and what they can do.  To summarize, there's more risk hiring an external vs. internal candidate.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;As an external candidate, you must close the gap between you and the internal candidate. Invest the time to &lt;a href="http://blog.seattleinterviewcoach.com/2009/09/how-to-prepare-for-cultural-fit.html"&gt;review the company website and talk to employees&lt;/a&gt;.  Create your own "on-the-job" opportunities. I’ve been brought on to provide some expert advice to those of you facing the prospect of going through a technical interview.  I’ve been in the software field for the last 7 years and am currently an engineering manager at Amazon.com.  More importantly, however, throughout my career I’ve been continuously interested in technical interviews and have had a wide variety of experience sitting on both sides of the table.  I currently conduct about 100 technical interviews a year and know what interviewers are really looking for when conducting a screening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The majority of candidates I interview end up not receiving job offers because they mess up some technical portion of the interview.  In the majority of these cases, however, it has nothing to do with the intelligence or ability of the candidates, but rather their lack of appropriate preparation for a technical interview.  Invariably, people forget details about basic data structures or forget how to tackle problem solving questions – this leads to a downward spiral during the interview.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example, image how you’d deal with this question:  Given an input stream of integers of an unknown length (the stream, not the length of the integers), derive an algorithm that can return one of the numbers already seen in the stream at random and with a normal distribution when a client asks for it – you only have 1MB of memory to work with.  So, for example, if your algorithm was running along and has processed 100 numbers already and a client asks for a random number, your algorithm should return one of the 100 numbers that you’ve already processed with equal 1/100 probability.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This question usually proves to be a stumper, but if proper problem solving techniques are used it becomes a lot more manageable – certainly not easy, but manageable.  First off, you need to recognize that the 1MB requirement is simply a made up number.  For problems like this that have large data sets, it’s tempting to start by looking at the big picture, but that’s not really the way you want to solve them.  I suggest looking at the problem from the absolute simplest case and building from there.  If you’ve processed one integer and then are asked to return a number at random, what do you need to do?  Well, that’s simple, you need to return the one number that you’ve seen with 100% probability.  What if you’ve seen two numbers?  Then you’ll return the first number with 50% probability or the second with 50% probability.  At 3?  33.3…% for each of the numbers you’ve seen.  Now a pattern is emerging.  For each number you process, you need to be ready to return one of them with a probability of 1/n.  Great, now we’re getting somewhere, but how do we implement this?  You’re dealing with a, possibly, infinite stream of numbers so it doesn’t matter if you have 1MB of space or 1TB or space, you can’t “remember” all of the numbers you’ve seen.  So, since you have limited space let’s see if we can solve the problem by only remembering one number at a time, the one that you’d return if you were asked to at any given moment.  For each number that you read from the stream you’ll need to roll an N sided die to decide whether that becomes your new return number or not, if it is then you can forget whatever the old return number was and store the new one in its place.  For the first number you see you’ll have a 1/1 probability of making that your return number.  When you see the second you have a ½ chance of replacing the first number with the second number as your return number, with the third it’s a 1/3 chance that you’ll replace the return number.  I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to write out the inductive proof to show that this actually works, but that’s the answer. Note that this isn’t a particularly good interview question as it requires some specific probability knowledge to solve. Gallo is a top presentation-skills coach; he's also one of my favorite columnists on Businessweek.com.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Apple just launched the iPad, a new tablet computer.  The McGraw-Hill PR team suggested that I compare the &lt;a href="http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1001q3f8hhr/event/index.html"&gt;iPad presentation&lt;/a&gt; to Gallo's points on Jobs' presentation secrets. Timely idea! Gallo's new book identifies 18 characteristics of a successful Steve Jobs presentation.  In the analysis below, I highlight a few from Jobs' iPad presentation.&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Create Twitter-Like headlines"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In the past, Apple used Twitter-friendly headlines to introduce new products including:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;MacBook Air. The world's thinnest notebook.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;iPod. One thousand songs in your pocket.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Here's the Twitter-friendly headline for the new iPad:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;“&lt;i&gt;iPad &lt;/i&gt;is our most advanced technology in a &lt;i&gt;magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price&lt;/i&gt;,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In the book, Gallo tells us that effective headlines are concise, specific, and contain a personal benefit.  The iPad headline wins points for brevity, but it fails the specific and personal benefit criteria.  Here's why:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Not specific&lt;/b&gt;. The &lt;a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/01/27ipad.html"&gt;iPad press release&lt;/a&gt; makes a marketing 101 mistake,  It does not tell the reader what the "device" is. For instance, the press release does not mention the term "tablet computer." The press release says the device is "thinner and lighter than a laptop or netbook," and as a reader, I tentatively deduce that the device is a computer.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;No credibility or personal benefit&lt;/b&gt;. The MacBook Air and iPod headlines are grounded in fact.  World' thinnest notebook.  1,000 songs in your pocket.  The iPad headline proclaims that it is "magical and revolutionary." Magical devices do not convey personal benefit to me, especially without concrete reasons to believe.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Develop a Messianic Sense of Purpose"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Steve Jobs loves the Messianic moment, and this Wednesday's presentation was no different. One of the early slides highlighted the following Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quote:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;div&gt;Last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;div&gt;(Interestingly enough, Jobs could have followed the WSJ quote with a self-effacing comment. Instead, he embraced the Messianic comparisons with an indifferent "Before we get to that..."  The curious remark wasn't lost on the audience; they chuckled in the background.)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Rule of Three"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Jobs loves to describe things in three's, and he used this technique again and again.  Here are a few examples:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Apple is a three product company: iPods, iPhones, Macs.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Apple has three competitors in the mobile devices category: Nokia, Samsung, and Sony.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;There are three devices in the Apple lineup: iPhone, iPad, and Mac.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Introduce the Antagonist"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Early in the presentation, Jobs calls out the villain: netbooks.  Jobs identified the netbook's shortcomings:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;"They're slow."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"Have low quality displays."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"Run clunky old PC software."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;Jobs concludes his three point analysis with the following, "(Netbooks) aren't better. They're cheaper."&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I liked this segment. Jobs makes it clear who the competition is, and we begin to understand why they're better.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Use 'Amazingly Zippy' Words"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;According to Gallo, Jobs likes to use words that are "fun, tangible, and uncommon."  Here are a few examples from the iPad presentation:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It's the best browsing experience you've ever had."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It's a dream to type on."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It's that simple." (Repeated multiple times)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It's wonderful."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It's terrific."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It screams." (In reference to the 1Ghz Apple chip)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"It's remarkable."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Dress Up Your Numbers"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;At the beginning of the presentation, Jobs shared some general Apple updates.  Here are some of the numbers he shared:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;"Sold 250 million iPods since 2001"&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Opened "284 retail stores"&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"50 million visitors last quarter"&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"140,000 (iPhone) applications"&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;"3 billion applications downloaded"&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;As Gallo mentions, these numbers are specific, relevant, and contextual.  Jobs could have described his company's performance using terms such as "same store sales" and "YoY growth." Instead, he chose descriptions that are easier to understand.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;Other thoughts&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Jobs' iPad presentation includes several other techniques identified in Gallo's book:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Few, if any, ah's and um's&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Excellent pacing&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Frequent pausing for theatrical effect&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;Lastly, I liked Jobs' use of props, especially the leather sofa.  Watching Jobs on the sofa, using the iPad, I could easily envision myself using the iPad during my off-hours.  The prop was an effective, non-verbal way of convey that the iPad is a personal, not business, device.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;As a new product, the iPad is underwhelming; industry pundits have called the iPad a "large iPhone."  Nevertheless, I enjoyed analyzing Steve Jobs' presentation skills. Gallo's thoughtful, well-researched book was an invaluable guide in learning how I could be an insanely great presenter in front of any audience.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1748900600909816070-3212807366780946799?l=blog.seattleinterviewcoach.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

It says &lt;a href="http://insight.kellogg.northwestern.edu/index.php/Kellogg/article/consistent_contributors"&gt;hiring managers can increase teamwork by hiring consistent contributors&lt;/a&gt;.  Here's an excerpt:&lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;J. Keith Murnighan (Professor of Risk Management at the Kellogg School of Management) and Kellogg alumnus J. Mark Weber (Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at the University of Toronto) investigated what they call the “cooperation problem” in a new study published in the &lt;i&gt;Journal of Personality and Social Psychology&lt;/i&gt;. Murnighan and Weber point to the influence of a consistent contributor—a person who always contributes, regardless of others’ choices—in groups that cooperate most effectively. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;“The consistent contributor looks for the collective good first and personal good second,” explains Murnighan. They initiate cooperation, leading the way for others to follow suit. You have been hired to figure out why and advise them on their next move.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;A French soft drink company, Le Seine, is looking to diversify its holdings by investing in a new fast food chain in the US. You are hired to determine whether they should pursue this path and, if so, how they should go about execution.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;A major US beer company, Beer Brew, recently entered the UK market. Two years after entry, the company is still losing money. Despite a high per capita consumption of beer in the UK market, sales have been very disappointing. What explains this phenomenon?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;A major auto service chain, Wheeler Dealer, has enjoyed healthy returns on its 30-store operation for the past 10 years. However, management feels that the chain needs to expand, as the current geographical areas in which they are based have become saturated. They have asked us to identify the source of this sudden downturn, and to come up with alternatives to restore them to a break-even position. They are one of the largest employers in the market, and will not consider layoffs as a possible solution.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The client is a grocery store chain that is considering whether or not they should enter the emerging Internet-based grocery shopping/delivery market in the Boston area. This regional chain is currently one of the leaders in the traditional grocery store market in northern New England. In their core market, two competitors have emerged in the Internet/at-home grocery shopping business, and are rapidly gaining market share. One of the companies that has already entered this new marketplace is the client's primary competitor in the traditional market. The second player is a chain that does not have grocery stores in the target region, but has entered the Boston area with Internet shopping delivery services. Should the client enter the market? If so, how, and what concerns should they have? If not, how do they protect market share from the emerging market that is threatening to steal business?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The client is a manufacturer and distributor of infant formula. On a state-by-state basis, infant formula producers bid for the right to be the sole supplier of infant formula to welfare recipients in that state. In addition to paying the government for the WIC contract, the client also provides rebates to retailers for WIC sales. As a result, income received from WIC sales is substantially less than that received from normal formula sales. In fact, sales to mothers that remain in the WIC program for more than 12 months result in a net loss. In trying to determine how much to bid on a WIC contract for a given state, what factors should you consider?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Our client is the U.S. pharmaceutical division of a multi-national corporation. In about six months the division will receive FDA approval to launch an anti-depressant drug. Despite this apparent good news from the FDA, the U.S. division is not elated. In fiscal year 1999, Regional Jet delivered 100 jet engine aircraft and 150 props. This represented a unit volume increase year-over-year of 10% and 5%, respectively, and revenues of $730 million and $225, million, respectively. Although overall profitability for Regional Jet in 1999 was a competitive 5% economic profit margin, profitability varied significantly by business. The prop business generated a stellar 30% profit margin, while the jet engine business was unprofitable with a margin of 3%. Over the past several years, Regional Jet has experienced eroding profitability in its jet engine aircraft business. Its prop business, despite being profitable, has been flat in most recent years. I'm not handy around the house, and while I enjoy my cooking, I'm not sure if others feel the same way. Thus, I crossed off volunteer work at a soup kitchen or &lt;a href="http://www.habitat.org/"&gt;Habitat for Humanity&lt;/a&gt; -- from the list.&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Interview coaching was a natural fit.  I've learned that a happy career often equals a happy life. Paraphrasing Maya Angelou, we all want a job where we feel that we're doing a good job. And we all want to be paid just a little bit more than we think we are worth.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Unfortunately, too many people stumble on the last hurdle to a job offer: the job interview. I can't blame anyone; interviewing is something we do once every couple of years. And it's not fun either. I can't imagine any of us spending our Friday nights practicing responses to "What's your biggest weakness?" with friends and family.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I've found a way to help others get their dream job. Job seekers may have the right skills and experiences, but they may not know how to communicate those skills and experiences effectively. And here's my personal bonus. Not only do I get to help others, but I get to help in areas where I have experience and insight: communication and marketing skills.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I appreciate good communication skills. Good communication is not about spelling, grammar, or accents. It's about being thoughtful. Put yourself in the listener's shoes. What does that person need to know? And how can you describe an idea that makes sense from their point of view, as concisely and clearly as possible?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I read an &lt;a href="http://whsc.emory.edu/press_releases2.cfm?announcement_id_seq=15766"&gt;excellent quote from Gregory Burns&lt;/a&gt;, professor of economics at Emory University. I've adapted it slightly to emphasize why communication skills matter at the job interview: &lt;i&gt;a candidate can have the best skills and work experience in the world - completely different and novel - but if that person can't explain it to others, it doesn't matter.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I'm also a big marketing junkie. For instance, I like to analyze Super Bowl ads. Is it clear what the product is? And if so, what's the unique selling proposition? In other words, why should I care?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I'm glad I discovered interview coaching. They make &lt;b&gt;unsubstantiated statements&lt;/b&gt;.  What makes it worse is that the unverified statement doesn't have reasonable &lt;b&gt;credibility&lt;/b&gt;.  "Traveling public is very, very safe?" &lt;a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126184598192805869.html"&gt;Increased security measures&lt;/a&gt; likely means traveling is not safe.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;How to avoid a self-promotion gaffe at the job interview?  Here are a few things to keep in mind:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Avoid superlatives&lt;/b&gt;.  Don't call yourself an "accomplished writer" or "very successful entrepreneur."&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Use indisputable facts&lt;/b&gt;. Instead of "accomplished writer," use "Business Week columnist." Instead of "very successful entrepreneur," use "founder of five &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;startups&lt;/span&gt;, most recently a social network that helps new college grads." &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Resist the temptation to shove your own conclusions down the listener's throat. Facts don't lie. Susan Britton Whitcomb offers some excellent advice, in her book &lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1593575726?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=seatintecoac-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=390957&amp;amp;creativeASIN=1593575726"&gt;Interview Magic&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;div&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Lou Adler, author of &lt;a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/0470128356?tag=seatintecoac-20&amp;amp;camp=213381&amp;amp;creative=390973&amp;amp;linkCode=as4&amp;amp;creativeASIN=0470128356&amp;amp;adid=1TMKEXY0KFZJ692W3TNT&amp;amp;"&gt;Hire with Your Head&lt;/a&gt;, advises his candidates to spend 10 or more hours preparing for every interview. Although some of that time will be devoted to research, a good portion should be spent verbally practicing your responses. Having information in your head and articulating that information with your mouth are two very different activities. In even more grueling advice, some speech coaches claim that an hour of preparation is required for every minute you are on stage. Sound like hard work? Consider the return on investment you will reap. Divide your annual income by the number of hours you spend preparing for the interview. At an annual income of $50,000 a year, 10 hours of preparation equates to $5,000 an hour. At $100,000, it's $10,000 an hour.
