It’s October 14, 2000, and you know what that means?! POKEMON GOLD AND SILVER HIT THE US FOR GAMEBOY COLOR, but unfortunately, Misato and Riri cannot afford the game. Instead, they spend their flashback hanging with Sae and Hiro.

Sae is Snorlaxing in class again, and this leaves Hiro as Scottish worried as an Oddish. Because of Sae’s Drowzeeness, Hiro bakes her a cake as fast as she can cooks dinner for her, but a teleporting Abracadabra Snubbulls into their Pokemon-Mating-Session. Sae is still concerned about the appropriateness of her blog-post story, but Kabitzin Misato tells her to just go for it. After Riri takes Misato with her, Hiro bathes her fat.

HYPER BLUSH!! IT'S SUPER FORSHIZZLE!!

Now it’s March 14th, 2010, but Yoshinoya could care less about Pokemon remakes. Instead, she takes the class outside to freely sketch the surroundings. Since the weather is absolutely fabulous, Yuno and Miyako decide to catch a Red Gyarados, but so far only Magikarp appear. They ditch that idea and throw some rocks at a bigger rock, which is said to give artistic abilities to the Critical Hit-er. Long story short, Yuno destroys the so-called “Weeping Woman” and her art skills still suck. THE END!

I CHOOSE YOU!!! KARP MAGIC!!! *cricket cricket*

Impressions:

This was a great episode with the right amount of silly puns, serious seniors, and BRUTE-ASS! I prefer the flashbacks this time around, but mostly because of Misato and Riri. I was surprised to see how entertaining they were, despite having some similar traits to the other girls. Speaking of traits, Totali totally influenced me, but his style was too complicated to Steal(ix), so I plagiarized Kabitzin instead. I think I made the right choice!

I love me some stereotypical-sexist-girl moments, so their superstitious-critical-hit-ness segment was charming. It was also interesting to note that Yuno could throw big rocks farther than smaller ones, but maybe she was just warming up. There was barely any Nori/Nazna this time around, but at least we got to see Nazna Pokemoning Yuno’s hand! She must watch a lot of Naruto…

As a final note, I realized that the OP/ED segments are receiving some additional improvements. I like it!… and here’s another pin-up. (/random)

Summary:

Sorry for being so late master, I was busy vajazzling!

Going straight back into the RAN FAN (sorry guys I know it’s officially Lan Fan, but I don’t care!) / Gluttony battle from last episode, we see our heroine kick some ass as she ‘kills’ poor Gluttony over and over. Being the brilliant guy that he is, Greed notices immediately that even under the mask and blades of death, RAN FAN is quite the hottie. Meanwhile her grandfather Fu explains to Ed about the Xing ability to sense Homunculus.

Back in Central, Madam Christmas shows Roy some old photographs where Selim appears to be exactly the same for over a century, and always with high ranking officials. Surprised that no one would have noticed for so long, Roy shrugs it off as lies which are easy to tell when you’re in charge. We also learn that apparently Madam Christmas is none other than Mustang’s foster mother as well, as the two blow up her bar to escape from Roy’s pursuers.

Back in the forest, Heinkel is still busy fighting Pride who just won’t die. Just as he has Pride pinned down, two random people with a lantern suddenly wander into the forest surprised at the loli-killing. With the lantern comes a shadow and Pride quickly hits Heinkel in the shoulder and throws the lantern in the forest, inexplicably easily and immediately lighting a bright but contained fire in the forest (I guess the Japanese have never really been camping LOL) for Pride to create more shadows with.

Why doesn't Pride try attacking Ed from behind?

Newly invigorated, Pride immediately goes to finish off Heinkel, but Ed steps in at the last moment. Using the high-carbon content of his northern automail, he creates a form of Greed’s ultimate shield and uses that to counter Pride’s shadow arms. After letting slip his secret carbon hand for no appearent reason, Pride decides to attack Ed once again using Al’s armour. This time though, Ed is prepared as he gets grandfather Fu to throw a flashbang in the air, thus temporarily overwhelming and erasing all the shadows in the area, and quickly bringing Al to safety as he’s now sure that Pride no longer has control over the armour.

I shed a tear :'( Poor Gluttony! I'd cry for Lust too...

As the flashbang burns out, Gluttony comes back on scene. Weakened after his battle with Heinkel, Pride decides that he needs more energy and with that he eats up Gluttony’s Philosopher’s Stone and gains Gluttony’s powers of smell along with it.

Back at Central, Roy has met up with his crew as they vow to not die. At Central HQ the generals discuss Roy’s actions when father asks them what they think Roy would do next. When no one responds, Olivier responds by saying that he’d probably capture Bradley’s wife, an action which father finds strange but ends up being absolutely what he does.

Reaction:

If it weren’t for the awesomeness of RAN FAN and some pretty cool Ed vs Pride (just like the OP) action, this episode would have been pretty meh. Really not much at all happened. The entire conversation between Roy and his foster mother proved nothing as we already know that Selim is a Homunculus and thus immortal. The fact that Madam Christmas is his foster mother is really unimportant. Really the only important thing that entire scene highlighted is that it shows that contrary to my questioning of how Riza was able to meet up with her old comrades so easily without being followed, it seems like there really were a lot of precautions taken for the meeting to take place.

As for the fight, I’m sad to see Gluttony go again. I mean the guy doesn’t really do much, but I’ve always had a soft spot for that lovable oaf. I wonder what the repercussions will be for Pride for eating Gluttony. I wonder if father will actually care or not. Considering father decided to remake Gluttony, he may have some feelings for his lost ’son’ but maybe not. I also wonder if in addition to his sense of smell if Pride gains Gluttony’s fake Gate of Truth stomach.

I’d also like to dedicate some space in this review to the absolute awesomeness that is… RAN FAN. The fact that she can put up such a ridiculous fight only 6 months after getting her new arm is amazing… what can’t this girl do? Yes I believe the only answer to that question is… me in the 3D world . Too bad she didn’t take off her mask this week *dreamy sigh*.

It seems like the Xing alchemy power of ‘feeling the Homunculus’ is sort of like The Force in some respects. I kept thinking back to Return of the Jedi when Luke goes “I’m endangering the mission. I shouldn’t have come“. I was a bit taken back by Ed’s reaction to Fu’s sensing of his dad (he goes ‘Him?!’ after Donkey Kong mentions that the other energy form is his dad). I thought Hohenheim [ED: I will start using the spelling "Hohenheim" as it's an actual place name in Germany and as we know everything in this story is German, Persian or Chinese] made it clear that he was a giant philosopher’s stone.

Finally, I wonder what Olivier’s getting at in telling Father exactly what Roy is up to. While she probably didn’t know his actual plan and was just giving an educated guess, was there a reason why she had to tell Father the truth? I hope she’s not also hoping to ‘get rid’ of him (like how Miles think Grumman will do) for her own ends so that she could be the ruler of Amestris when all is said and done. Hopefully it is just a tactic to gain Father’s trust momentarily before she turns the tables.

Next week: The next 20 minutes in this REAL-TIME ANIMATED FINAL BATTLE that I’m told will span 20 episodes for 1 day…. they should rename this 24: Brotherhood.

EDIT: Oh yes, and we now have a good way to defeat Pride. Use Hohenheim’s philsopher stone power to create a geodesic dome to surround him by and then he can’t move and that’s that.

Hey there, Young Chap! How would you like to join Sea Slugs?!

The school cafeteria is having a Chinese Dollah Menu, but Yuno and Miyako were too late to buy anything. Lucky for them, Hiro is a master of all fats-man-ship. She bakes them a cake as fast as she can whips up her own Chinese Dollah Menu for the gang, and everyone becomes fatter because of it.

"Hello, I'm a Jesus159159159" - "And I'm an Epi!" - "AND WE'RE BEING REPLACED!!!"

In the second-half flash-back, Yuno contemplates on her artistic abilities, and wonders why she continues to draw when all her drawings look like I drew them. Hiro once again comes to the rescue, and now fills her head with information as opposed to filling her belly. She states that her drawings do in fact suck, but practice makes perfect and perfect makes practice, and knowledge is POWER!!! Yuno takes a bath, and that’s it! THE END!

Impressions:

I can’t believe Green-Thing is still alive, but you probably knew that since you’re about 3 episodes ahead of me. It’s cool, though. I’ll catch up someday!

Although the animation was pretty funky, I still enjoyed most of the quirks, like Yuno’s butt, Yuno as an American *BA DUM PSH*, and the standard Totali-link!

Yuno and Hiro’s Daughter-Mother moment was touching, but sometimes you can’t be too optimistic, especially with young art students. In RL, if you tell them to “don’t worry about it / you’ll get better in time”, they will get lazy and NOT worry about it! They get too cocky and think, “Oh, I have all the time in the world! I’m still young! I don’t need to practice! It’ll all come naturally”, which I see in a lot in my art classes. So take it from me: When an artwork sucks, tell em’ it sucks DICK!!! If it’s good, compare it to an artwork that is clearly better than theirs. Then tell them their artwork sucks DICK!!! Trust me on this one!

The Tears fall down like London Bridge, Two Birds and Equivalent Twins, but I could not understand the problem. "Make me look Beautiful", she said to the Con Artist. Of course, he could not turn her down, for he specialized in the art of Con. "You are not full of Beauty, my child; therefore, I shall give it to you”. As he left his subject, there was nothing to be seen. He had created another Masterpiece... Jesus was a Gangsta Jigg. He's bustin' for the Customers

Mikado mentions he’s tired of living a normal life, but now his life in his crappy apartment has been turned upside down by Melty. Masaomi and Mikado chat about who could possibly be a Dollar, and Masaomi correctly predicts that Takiguchi Ryo is a member. Ryo confirms his theory, and gives the usual spiel about why it is great to be a Dollar. Mikado is happy about this development and keeps Ryo’s membership pseudo-secret, saying only those who ask should have the right to know.

Later that day Mikado gets harassed by the hooligans that Izaya beat up earlier, and Izaya steps in once again to save Mikado. This time Izaya has Selty with him, and Mikado asks to see her non-head in return for listening to her tale about Melty. Although Mikado agrees to put in a good word for Selty, when he gets home he is jumped by Yagiri Pharmaceutical goons. The YP goons scamper away (without even cleaning the place!) when Selty and Izaya barge in, and Mikado suddenly gets fired up and logs onto the Dollars website. As a semi-surprised Izaya looks on, Mikado asks for their help, stating that he now holds all the cards; plus, the YP guys are probably already getting chased by Saburou, after accidentally hitting his van with a pebble.

Reaction:

What? Ridden on a horse? / You're using coconuts!

That replay of last episode’s chase surprised me; why are Selty’s reflexes so slow?! I found it ironic that all three chatters were in the same room IRL, and yet they all know so little about each other. I think it is now pretty clear that Mikado is the founder of the Dollars, since he got that same stupid expression while asking Ryo about the Dollars that I get when I find out that a random person I’m chatting with has heard of SS!AB. Plus once Mikado busted out the fiery mouse moves, like something out of Saki it was clear that things just got real.

I’m not really that impressed with the gangs so far. The Dollars sound like any number of crappy guilds that spam chat channels taking anyone who will join. Their members are all a bunch of wishy-washy people who don’t want to be bossed around, with the possible exception of Shizuo and Izaya. I think Izaya may have been searching for the leader of the Dollars all this time, and perhaps this whole Melty thing was a way to smoke Mikado out. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that Izaya forewarned Melty and also clued in the YP goons. Also, I’m almost certain that Masaomi was the original leader of the Yellow Scarves from how he reacted to Ryo’s story. Furthermore, I bet Anri is secretly the knife-wielding leader of a stalker gang, because that would make for some beautiful irony.

Out you go Namie, time for Uncle to have a little private time

Summary:

Did you just immediately subcontract out the work I gave you?!

Namie is funding Seiji’s little love romp, but when a frantic Melty takes Seiji’s phone and chucks it into a fountain, it sets off a race to find Seiji. Namie enlists Izaya’s services, but it seems that Izaya is actually advising Melty on how to avoid the pursuers while at the same time securing Seiji for Namie. We then get a flashback of how Namie and Seiji spent a lot of time alone at their Uncle’s place and how their Uncle had Selty’s head in a jar. Namie made the mistake of showing Seiji the head, and naturally he fell in love with it. Namie considers this her first and only mistake.

We also get a flashback of how Mika stalked Seiji and then accidentally found Seiji after Seiji stole Selty’s head out of Yagiri Pharmaceuticals. For her trouble, Mika got beaten very badly, and Namie was overjoyed that Seiji needed his big sis to protect him. Anyway, Seiji and Melty run all around town trying to avoid the cops, and that is when Shizuo and Selty spot them. Selty immediately recognizes her head, but Melty just screams and runs away with Mikado’s help. Now everyone wants to know who Mikado is, in order to track down Melty, and Namie is not afraid to have Melty killed in order to protect her bro-con.

Reaction:

Don't worry Seiji, I pre-chewed the ramen for you

Now more than ever I suspect that Namie just revived Mika and gave her some contact lenses and a scar tattoo to trick Seiji. Why would Namie let Seiji spend his time macking with the head that he is really in love with? Wouldn’t it make more sense for Namie to trick Seiji into hanging out with the girl he hates so that she can point out the truth later and win Seiji’s love back (and kill Mika a second time)? Plus, it makes no sense for Selty’s head to love Seiji and be so afraid of Namie. I thought Namie was smart, but it sure was stupid of her to show young Seiji Selty’s beautiful head. Namie should have started by playing doctor with young Seiji so that they could learn about anatomy through some hands-on lessons.

Seiji is more and more annoying by the episode, and it’s clear he’s got some screws loose. His pen stabbing was so retarded, and in comparison even Shizuo looked a lot smarter (way to not pull out the pen). I’ve actually stabbed myself in the hand with a pencil (by accident), and I still have a scar there to remind me. In that respect, I was suffering along with Selty after I saw Shizuo take so many pen-stabs. Also, as terrible as it is, I was snickering the whole episode when I realized that Selty would be horrified to found out what all those various guys were doing with her head. What? What?! Don’t judge me!

Stop having boring tuna, stop having a boring life

Summary:

We must play these lotto numbers immediately!

Selty is moody since she can barely remember her face anymore and she keeps having a dream where a strange guy busts in at the last minute and foils her attempt to get her head out of a jar. Even on her first break in 265 days, she can’t enjoy herself and gets mad at Shinra when he mentions how she has an interesting sense of taste. Selty mopes around for most of the day and hangs out with Shizuo in front of a vacant lot. In a clear juxtaposition, Shizuo cannot remember what the building in the lot used to look like, even though it was clearly a very large building. When Selty remembers that it was a crappy blue building, she gets some renewed hope. This coupled with a makeup dinner with Shinra in which she gets a fortune cookie that tells her she will find that which she lost turns her day around and she finally has a dream where she and her head hang out in a beautiful forest.

Elsewhere, some random guy tries to storm Yagiri Pharmaceuticals with firecrackers, because his girlfriend got kidnapped and the only thing she could remember was Yagiri Pharmaceuticals. Obviously this retarded plan fails, and Shinra is called in to patch up the idiot. At the same time Mikado shows up at school after a rough night, and helps Anri find her shoes that somehow got thrown out onto the school field. Anri doesn’t seem very grateful, however, and doesn’t even invite Mikado into her house.

Reaction:

Hey, how's the view from up there?

I’m kinda sad that this was a boring episode, although there were more subtle hints. The Russian lady with the wishlist pad showed that Mikado is looking for a connection, which reinforces my theory that he is part of the Dollars, if not the founder or at least the webmaster. I didn’t understand what happened with Anri’s shoes, but I suspect that Mikado did not simply oversleep that morning. We also got to see Seiji addressing Mika as Selty, although I’m still not completely convinced it’s Selty’s head on Mika’s body anymore since there would be no point to keeping Mika’s head in a jar. “Melty” seems to have forgotten everything, and is all paranoid, so maybe it’s time to put down the weed for just a little while.

Selty herself had some interesting info, and it wasn’t clear if she really loves Shinra or not. His visit to Yagiri Pharmaceuticals (which may or may not be affiliated with North American corporation Nebula) suggests perhaps he knows what happend to Selty’s head, and if that’s the case he deserves that bad fortune cookie that stated his love would be for naught. As usual, Selty was cute in waking up from her nightmare, and putting her fortune cookie under her pillow. But what happened to that food that Selty stuck in the Gantz orb?
