Summary:

As we continue from last week, Ed finishes his talk at Riza’s house and meets up with Al afterwards. There he reveals the truth behind the Ishbal affair, and also lets Al know about the fact that the two of them weren’t the only ones having trouble with alchemy back a few episodes ago when Father ‘turned off’ alchemy. The fact that May and Scar were able to use alchemy with no problem at that time is noted as important by the brothers and perhaps a source of hope for the future. With that in mind, they set off to find May, but a quick call later they realize that she has already left Dr. Knox’s place.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that we'd ALL like a TASTE of Winry's APPLE PIE... although Ran Fan's would be better!

Meanwhile everyone in Mustang’s former group says their goodbyes to each other with Havok making a quick cameo. As Mustang contemplates his now transferred subordinates he compares each to a chess piece (including what’s his face as a pawn LOL). After everyone leaves, Mustang goes for a drive and runs into the Elric brothers trying to track down May and her panda (whom Ed calls a cat) and offers the brothers a ride home. In the car, Ed asks for Mustang’s help in learning more about Eastern alchemy. Mustang replies with wanting his 520 cents back from a few episodes ago (that Al used for long distance, I guess they don’t have collect calls in Amestris). Ed responds that he’ll pay back the money once Mustang achieves his dream of being the president. That evening Mustang goes to a ‘gentleman’s club’ to call upon the owner to send a secret message back to his old boss.

Knox can't believe his eyes as Ran Fan undresses before him *cue cigarette ash falling to the floor*

Back at Dr. Knox’s house, Ran Fan’s grandfather slaps her for losing an arm (NOooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!) as he cannot bare the shame before thanking Dr. Knox for saving her life. Ran Fan repeats the same gratitude to the good doctor before the two leave. After they leave, Knox’s son comes for a visit to let his father know that he’ll become a doctor thanks to him. Knowing all of the horrible things he’d done in the past, Knox wonders if he’s allowed a moment of happiness after all.

This show needs more good villains

The episode then focuses it’s attention on the imprisoned Kimblee. Apparently the higher ups only wanted to use him to test out the Philosopher’s Stone, and give it back, but realizing that no one else but those officers talking to him knew of the stone, Kimblee promptly kills them all and is later imprisoned for this. He has hidden the stone though, waiting for an opportune time to use it again. That very day, Kimblee is released, and the jail guards are baffled at how such a dangerous man could be pardoned. As he leaves Kimblee leaves a nice surprise for one of the main guards.

He’s picked up by none other than Evny whom Kimblee seems to know and it now becomes crystal clear why he was released. Apparently the Homunculus have a mission for him – to kill Scar and to recapture Dr. Marcoh whom they surmise is still alive. Armed with a second Philosopher’s Stone (this time created by the souls of Marcoh’s research team) Kimblee sets out on his mission willingly in order to finish his extermination of the Ishbal-jin.

The episode ends with a confirmation of Dr. Marcoh being alive. Apparently he’s been kept alive by Scar in order to enlist his help in deciphering his brother’s research. As May Chang meets up with Scar, everyone sets off for the secret hiding spot of Scar’s research up north…

<img class="size-full wp-image-8652" title="FMA2-31-06" src="http://www.seaslugteam.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/FMA2-31-06.jpg" alt="Time to go train in the mountains...
Reaction:

Much like last week’s Kimi no Todoke, this felt likea short episode. There wasn’t really much that was new, as everyone just consolidated their knowledge.

It was good to finally get a bit more on Kimblee though. I hope that he doesn’t become a bit of a one dimensional character and turns into a great villain. It’s interesting to note that Kimblee was given the stone by a group of the brass that really wanted to test out the stone’s properties. I wonder if Dr. Marcoh came up with the idea of the stone all by himself, or if he was given the information on how to produce it by the Homunculus. I also wonder if the Marcoh project was secret from the Homunculus themselves. I’d imagine though that the idea was completely planned by the Homunculus or by Father. But why? What was the point in researching how to create Philosopher’s Stones when they already knew how? There are still so many questions to be answered.

Meanwhile, I was pretty surprised to see that Marcoh was still alive. Apparently Scar was much smarter than I realized. I was originally under the impression that in some kind of pain-induced craze he buried his brother’s research and that was that. But it seems that he actually read it all to try and understand it but couldn’t and then made note of a specific hiding spot for all of this far from the Ishbal lands in the south as well. Pretty impressive Scar, pretty impressive.

Finally, I wonder that now that Mustang knows of needing to learn about Eastern alchemy, if he will bring back Maria Ross from Xing. It would be cool to see her again!

Summary:

It’s midterms time and everyone is stressed about exams, but Sawako is extra stressed as she ponders what to do now that she is alone yet again. Keeping her thoughts to herself, Sawako spends her entire exam time crying and thinking about what might have been with her new friends as now that she has found real companions, she realizes that she cannot give it up and return back to her old days, which makes her even more sad.

For whatever reason the girls look a lot better this episode

As she walks home by herself after the test, she is confronted by Kazehaya who wants to know why Sawako’s been avoiding him. At first Sawako puts on a brave face and tells Kazehaya not to talk to her, but she quickly breaks down and the tears start streaming out. She explains to him about not wanting to make him lose his popularity and thus why she was avoiding him. Kazehaya responds by saying that no one is making him talk to Sawako, and that it’s his own will, and that he’s there for her.

Thought this was kind of cute

After a long talk and some canned coffee, Sawako feels much better and is astonished at how fast Kazehaya was able to make her feel better. He explains to her that if Yoshida and Yano were avoiding her to keep her popular she would feel pretty crappy too. Sawako realizes the errors of her ways, and with Kazehaya’s urging she vows to talk to the two girls to clear things up and let them know that she really does want to be their friend.

Meanwhile Yoshida is at school and bumps into Pin. After blaming Pin for taking her away so that she never overheard what followed after Sawako told her middle school friend that her and Yano were not her friends, Pin responds that she shouldn’t blame others for her own problems. Yoshida then goes to the library and realizes that Sawako has read all the ghost story books in the school library, and is astonished at how hard Sawako tries in everything even though Yoshida had previously just made a joke about Sawako needing to learn more ghost stories.

This was a really touching scene...

We switch over to Yano who’s sitting outside her front steps at home looking miserable. There, a passing jogging Ryu (didn’t know he had so much energy in him!) talks to her. Seems like he’s been consoling her since they were little kids. This time he asks her if she really does know what Sawako is thinking or if she jumped the gun, and he convinced Yano that perhaps she needs to talk to Sawako more before running off.

For a second there, I thought he was George from Paradise Kiss

That evening Yano and Yoshida meet up and decide that they will try and clear things up with Sawako for real because they realize how much they do care about her.

The next day, while stressing about how she would talk to Yano and Yoshida, Sawako is thinking in the toilet when she overhears some girls talk about the rumours about her. She busts out of the toilet to tell the girls that it’s all a misunderstanding, but it seems that she has bumped into the wrong group as the girls obviously don’t care. The girls confront Sawako as the episode ends.

This episode's Kawaii Sawako pic. Yes she's crying but she's so cute when she cries

Reaction:

I felt like this was a super short episode as if nothing much happened, and really not that much did. It was nice to see everyone come to their senses though. I guess even in Shojo manga, it’s acknowledged that girls are pretty emotional and perhaps not so rational while guys (Ryu, Kazehaya) are much more so. There WAS a lot of crying in this episode though, and for a second I thought I was watching Gundam (which ironically is a shonen thing which likes guys who cry a lot and strong women).

When Sawako was crying during her test, I found myself pretty caught up in it all. Not for the normal reasons of feeling bad for her, but I suddenly had this flashback to Love Hina where Keitaro is daydreaming during his entire entrance exam, ends up falling asleep and failing it all. I really hoped that Sawako wouldn’t ruin her test with her crying buckets of tears the entire time.

This episode did have some really touching moments. The first moment occurs when Kazehaya confronts Sawako after the exams and she starts crying, he grabs her hand ever so gently. I honestly thought of all the tension that one feels back in high school when you’re about to kiss a girl but the timing just isn’t right… it had that type of tension in it, and I felt it was really well done. As much as it was a moment for Sawako to vent and cry and release all of her feelings all at once, I felt that on the flip side Kazehaya was trying really hard to stop himself from kissing her. The other touching moment is when Yoshida is at the library and finds all of Sawako’s books. It could easily have been a scene of someone finding out the ‘truth’ after someone died as it had that much of an impact.

I’m looking forward to seeing how everything is resolved next episode. It seems like the girls in the washroom were just about to laugh at the fact that it was them that made up the rumours or it was that other girl who liked Kazahaya a few episodes back who made up the rumours, but Sawako was too quick to interrupt them. Perhaps things will be more clear next week. I can’t wait.

After talking with Sawako at school that day they reassure themselves that she’s completely innocent.

Meanwhile Kazehaya is quite late for school that day, as he’s held up by Pin (the supply teacher/gym teacher) in the teacher’s room. Pin discusses his drunken mishaps and wonders if staring into Sawako’s eyes was the cause of it all, and also teases Kazehaya about their relationship together. Startled, Kazahaya runs to class. There Sawako notices his AWESOME SHINY FOREHEAD (extra points for fighting out who that is in the pic).

When questioned about why there was a huge propane tank on school grounds, the principal replied 'it seemed like a good idea at the time, and I mean we really like teppanyaki...'

Later that day, Sawako shares a nice lunch with Yano and Yoshida outside and realizes how great her life is. After lunch, Yano and Yoshida are confronted by some other girls (who look like they belong in a Ghibli movie) about the rumours, as the two try and defend Sawako. At the same time, Sawako meets up with her middle school friend who notices that Sawako has really opened up lately. When asked about her relationship with Yano and Yoshida, the two girls happen to listen in to hear Sawako say that they are not her friends. Unfortunately before she could finish what she really wanted to say, Yano and Yoshida are dragged off by Pin to get them to hand Ryuu some baseball info. As Sawako finishes, she explains to her friend that she’s not sure if she can call the two girls her friends yet as they are not that close but that she really does like them and would like to be their friends someday.

Pin plays some Kancho on Yoshida (and then puts his arms around the girls really quickly :P)

Dismayed by the fact that Sawako said she didn’t consider them their friend, Yano and Yoshida ponder what she really meant by that. Perhaps it was because they had just met and that they themselves would still feel a bit awkward to admit that Sawako was their friend and that she felt the same way. Determined to find out the truth, Yano tells Sawako that she really likes her, and asks what she thinks back. Sawako responds with “Rather than saying I like you, I’d rather say…”. Before she can finish, Yano cuts her off believing that Sawako doesn’t like them at all as Sawako wonders if they really understood her point. While pondering this in the toilet, she overhears some girls talk about her and the rumours. The girls accuse Sawako of using Yano, Yoshida and Kazehaya in order to be popular and the girls remark that Kazehaya is going to lose his popularity real fast if he keeps hanging around Sawako. Astonished by this revelation, Sawako decides that she is just too much of a bother to everyone and decides to keep her distance yet again.

Huh huh huh huh, that's some good stuff man!

The next day, Yano and Yoshida meet each other as they walk to school, both having cried their eyes out the night before as Sawako’s rejection. Once again they wonder if it was all a misunderstanding or if Sawako really did start those rumours about them and really was using them. The girls bump into Sawako at school where sensing that they are sad (although Sawako misunderstands the real reason why) Sawako apologizes preemptively to them and runs away. She vows to herself that she will clear up the rumours and let everyone know that Yano and Yoshida aren’t her pawns.

The episode ends off as Kazehaya confronts Sawako about being distant. She mutters that no matter what, she could never hate him as she runs off.

Although a sad episode, I cannot miss the Kawaii Sawako pic of the week!

Reaction:

I was actually very pleasantly surprised at this episode. In my last episode review, I had commented about how if the story presented the rumour episode as the standard ’stupid misunderstanding and everyone believing things too easily’ type deal this series would be at best mediocre. Happily this was not the case.

I don’t ever remember a single anime that I’ve seen where characters have been so skeptical as to rumours and innuendo. Yano and Yoshida managed to give Sawako the benefit of the doubt after hearing that she may have started the rumours. They gave her the benefit of the doubt when they overheard her say that she didn’t think of them as friends. They gave her the benefit of the doubt when she said she wouldn’t say she liked them to their face, and finally they still gave her the benefit of the doubt when she preemptively apologized for ‘making them sad’.

Meanwhile Sawako herself, while misunderstanding, really does try hard to clear things up, but she’s just really bad at clearing things up. Instead of the typical anime ‘too much pride to clear things up’ kind of deal, Sawako has very little of that and really does try her best to make things good.

That ladies and gentlemen is the absolute opposite of basically every other anime I’ve ever seen where rumours and innuendo are taken too easily and too seriously and are not corrected by sheer stupidity. It was actually quite spectacular to see, and very unexpected.

Kimi no Todoke, I salute you, you truly are the best show of the season so far.

Next episode: Will Sawako fix things or not just yet?

Summary:

The episode begins with a bit of a flashback a few years ago as Roy is talking with his sensei who taught him alchemy. On his deathbed, his sensei expresses disappointment at Roy for being a dog of the military, and then promptly dies, but not before asking Roy to protect his daughter and the fruits of all his research… Riza Hawkeye.

At this very moment... Roy catches TB

Flash forward back to present time, as Claudia McCunnen Riza is taking a shower when Ed pays a visit. There Ed returns the gun he had borrowed, and takes the chance to talk to Riza about pulling the trigger, and what really happened in Ishbal.

I hope Hayate likes coffee!

At the same time Scar is busy interrogating Dr. Marcoh (although one assumes chronologically Scar’s thing happened quite a while beforehand) about the same thing. We learn that the Ishabal-jin were always a bit annoyed at being annexed and tensions were always high. Envy’s disguised killing of the Ishbal child was just the last straw that set things into motion, which eventually led to a 7 year civil war. Fed up with the war, President Bradley decided to enact Executive Order 3066 – the order allowing the genocide of the Ishbal race.

It was good to see Hughes again, I miss his antics!

With the entire army mobilized and state alchemists involved, the extermination was relatively fast, but ends up changing the views of many in the military including Roy, Armstrong, Riza and Hughes as they questioned why they were killing innocent people in the first place. We learn that Riza was an expert sniper at this time (although one wonders how good you have to be if the other side can’t really shoot you back).

At the same time, we learn that Dr. Marcoh took captured Ishbal prisoners to turn them into Philosopher’s Stones for Kimblee to use.

I'm a soul man! do do do do, do do do do! I'm a soul man!

After the war, Riza officially enlists under Roy’s command where he asks her to follow him to hell and to kill him if he ever strays from his ideals. Accepting the challenge, Riza grows out her hair and stays by his side.

As the storytelling ends, and with the encouragement of Riza, Ed vows to return Al and himself to their bodies. Meanwhile as Al leaves Dr. Knox’s house, May Chang learns that he is really Ed’s little brother.

This turned into a Shojo manga so fast I barely noticed...

As the episode ends, Envy is delivering food to Dr. Marcoh when he discovers his DECAPITATED BODY WITH “VENGEANCE” SPELLED OUT IN BLOOD ON THE WALL. (and you guys said this series wasn’t dark! Hrumph!)

Reaction:

This episode felt like a relatively ’short’ episode for some reason in my mind. Maybe it was all the reused footage, or the fact that we already basically knew everything that this episode talked about anyway, I’m not sure. From the snippets from previous episodes we pretty knew exactly what the Ishbal ‘civil war’ was all about (what’s so civil about war anyway?) already, and we also knew that Marcoh was making Philosopher’s Stones.

There were three new things in this episode. First of all we finally see Kimblee in all his glory, Philosopher Stones and all. It is a mystery as to why exactly he was given stones. Obviously the Homunculus started the war for their own benefit, so why were the products of the entire affair given to Kimblee? And what were the larger aims of starting the war in the first place? Surely the central conflict in this story which set the background for everyone wasn’t just a random affair. I do wonder if they were trying to use Kimblee as an experiment to see how they could further use stones. Or perhaps Kimblee himself is a Homunculus (Pride perhaps?). Hard to say at this point.

I’m hoping that Kimblee and his stones feature more prominently in future episodes. Having a corrupt state alchemist who’s capable of real alchemy would be much more fun to watch than just fighting the homunculus or fighting the omnipotent ‘Father’ for our heroes.

The second major event in this episode was the realization that there is a bit more to Mustang and Riza’s relationship than we were previously led to believe. I was always hoping that Mustang randomly loved his subordinate, but now there’s a possibility that he’s protecting her out of duty. It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t like her in some respect, but there’s a much larger possibility that them having a romantic relationship is diminished which is a shame.

Finally the last and most significant new reveal is the fact that Riza has a giant tattoo on her back with some alchemy stuff on it. Considering her father put all of his research on her back, it adds yet another factor to how the story will play out. Will the scars on the back which obscure part of the tattoo matter? Will this ‘reveal’ add onto Scar’s brother’s book, or will it be complementary? Will each show the same truth in the end, or will they depend on one another? In this case, will Scar get to see Riza naked before Roy??!?!

Either way, after multiple revelations in the past 4 episodes, it’s nice to see many new mysteries open up with some potential new alliances (Scar + the brothers) and new rivals (Pride, GreedLing, Kimblee) coming into play as well.

P.S. Obligatory “this episode needed more Ran Fan”.

P.P.S. What’s with Riza having the same haircut as Al!?!?!?

EDIT: for my crappy spelling

Summary:

From various Yayoi and Touya slipups, as well as Fujii-san’s warnings, Yuki is given ample warning that Touya may be ready to break up with her. However, Yuki remains optimistic that she would fall in love with Touya all over again, because she is one of those idiots who doesn’t learn from her mistakes. Things are really shuffling around now, and Rina joins Itsuki’s M&M Music as insurance in case Menou flakes out again. The Sakura-dan is disbanded, with only vice-leader Sarii Touin getting a solo deal, but nobody cares because the pedophile demographic is not very profitable.

Rina’s last day comes up, and Touya backs out of going with Yuki because he has to take Akira’s shift at Echoes (so that Akira can go on a date with Misaki). Yuki is also booked, because she has to meet with some TV producers. After destroying all of Frank’s dishes and doing a terrible job, Touya sneaks over to cheer up Rina. In a rare moment of weakness, a crying Rina puts up with Touya’s embrace, and Touya is dismayed to find that Rina is even smaller than Yuki. Although he hopes someone will stop him, Touya can’t help but be Rina’s rebound guy, and he starts making out with the vulnerable idol. Just as Yuki sneaks out of her meeting, runs across town, and sprints up the stairs, she spots Touya heading up in the elevator for a little <del>Penis</del> Venus Festival rehearsal!

Reaction:

Apparently salt was scarce in the 1980’s, which is clearly why they put off the invention of cell phones until the salt problem was taken care of. In those days, only a chosen few could produce excess salt, and all others (women especially) were forced to suck the excess salt from the faces of these chosen. Furthermore, due to massive inflation, a billion yen could only buy you a crappy fake painting, and so women had to pay for salt in breasts. Once you wasted your salt on crying, you were screwed, both figuratively and literally.

I barely even know what’s going on anymore; I just wish that I could know that this was all part of Rina’s plan to destroy Yuki on her last day of work. I’m even getting mixed signals from Yayoi, since it looks like she is now forcing herself on Touya and practically begging to be caught by the mysterious photographer. More and more I can’t stand Yuki, but at least her running skills have increased under Rina’s tutelage. I am also convinced now that Eiji believes his girls sing better when they are sexually frustrated. With Touya spinning out of control and the questions piling up, I am sooooo ready for the Venus Festival and the inevitable bloodbath.

Too bad Hei already has a new girl to smack around. Apparently, Hei must train Suou to become a proper lady contractor, which means first they gotta shoot some ducks cranes, work on those Street Fighter skills, and learn how to dance (good to manipulate da boiz ;3)

Later, a group of groupies start to dance to Lady Gaga music (IN PUBLIC!!!), but the head-honcho notices Suou. He totally gawt-da-hawts for her (even though there’s clearly an age difference…) and starts to HIT on her (but not like this). Misaki also receives more screen time, but she’s in a bit of a pickle (and not a Scooby Snack). In order to get more info on BK-201, she’ll have to meet Madame Oreille, who happens to have purple lipstick (aka: that means she’s important. The fact that she even has lipstick makes her important!)

Umm, later on they stay at a Love Hotel (a run down one, it’s not…UP ANYMORE!!! HYUK HYUK!), and Suou eats some expired Ramen. She likes her Ramen “RAW-MAN”, but she <a title=""Back in the day, we used to eat 10 Warheads in one go, and you can't even handle sour-gummy-worms? PATHETIC!!!" (NOTE: We at Sea Slugs care for our readers, and strongly advise that you do not eat multiple Warhead candies all at once. We are not responsible for any damages that may result in eating multiple Warhead candies. While doing more training, the GROUPIE-GOONS come and decide to HIT ON HER again. Hei decides that this will be good training for her, so he tells her to go whore herself. Before anything naughty can happen, the Popo came, so everybody scatters. The episode ends with Suou contemplating on life and Misaki meeting Madame Oreille, fighting for the title of upper-lip and/or lip-stick Queen! THE END!

Hint: the Cross on her cheek...)

Impressions:

I’m not too sure about DTB’s attempt at humor (the belly dancing, the lolicon guy and his groupies, Mao about to get screwed by a cat, the that-was-so-last-season-smiling, the cross-dressing-dad, etc), especially when Suou was constantly getting HIT ON (literally). It was almost unbearable to watch…OH WHO AM I KIDDING?!? THE PIMP-SMACKING WAS FABULOUS (but only in anime, kay guys?!). But honestly, the pimp-smacking is getting old just like Disney references. On the subject of wife-beaters, Mao’s comment on the past-Hei was interesting; all Hei needed back then was to fill his stomach with food, but now he fills his stomach with alcohol. I sort of miss Mao as a cat, but that’s not important.

I guess the new lolicon-guy will replace Nika as a love interest, which I’m not too fond of. I can’t imagine Suou hooking up with that guy, in fact I thought Nika would eventually get together with Suou (it did seem like she had feelings for him, even though he went for the bustier Mc-Muffin-Russian). Opps, sorry, this isn’t a shoujo-show, my bad!

Other than training and wife-beating, this episode was a disappointment, but I’m sure many of you enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good smacking, but when it happens every 5 minutes, it degrades the flavor of the pimp-smack. DTB better step up it’s game, cause I’ve had enough of that! So hit the road, Jack! And don’t you come back no mo NO MO’ NOOO MOOREEE, NOoOoo MOoOooOoREE!!! Hit da ROOOAAAD JACK! AND DON’TCHA COME BACK NO MOOOOOOORREE!!!
