When I was 15 I bought a book that changed my life. It was the first real opportunity I had to study this new urban artform in any great detail and it inspired me to go out and do it. This new special edition copy has 70 additional photos and some fresh words from the authors.

Web Design Inspiration

I thought I’d share with you my web design inspiration set on Flickr. It’s a pool of screengrabs of websites that I like. I subscribe to a number of CSS gallery feeds and when I see sites I like I grab them using a Firefox plugin called Fireshot and upload them to my Flickr set for easy reference when I need it. I update it every week or so and I try and keep it ordered by most recently uploaded first.

The image titles are the URLs so you can go off to the site to experience it. If you find it useful you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed for the set.

More inspiring sketchbook work this time from Paul Heaston, a self-confessed, compulsive sketchbooker. I love the detail in his sketches and the precision of his cross-hatching. I’d love to have the chance to thumb through his sketchbooks for real, but will have to settle for the next best thing – his sketchbook sets on Flickr.

I particularly love how the colours jump off the recycled, buff coloured paper in the Cachet Earthbound sketchbooks – might have to treat myself to one of those!

I really envy any artist who can go straight in with pen and produce results like this. I always have to pencil first, otherwise I’m left with a dark scribbled mess, but I guess practice makes perfect right?

A while back I stumbled across the work of Mattias Adolfsson, an illustrator from Sweden. He creates an amazing world of wierdness with his intricately detailed illustrations in pen & ink and watercolour.

I was stoked to see my Hand of Sean font on a TV ad for the new Ladyhawke album.

A little under a year ago I created my own font called Hand of Sean and it’s now available for exclusive download from DaFont.com. The font is free for personal use. Donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. All I ask is that you donate a minimum of $15 if you want to use it for anything commercial or non-personal.

Within a month of release it had exceeded 50,000 downloads and hit #17 of the DaFont top 100 fonts. After several requests I updated the font with accented characters and by September it had reached 150,000 downloads. Now, almost a year on font has been downloaded over 400,000 times!

I occasionally get asked how to make a donation for the font. There are full details included in the font package, but I’ve set up a link for your convenience – you can donate here.

Note: The font is available exclusively from DaFont.com, although there are a small number of 2nd rate font sites that seem to have an old, buggy version of the font available, despite several requests for them to remove it. I will only ever update the font at DaFont.com and I strongly recommend not downloading the font from any other website.
