Dear Parents
We have a few very busy weeks ahead of us with our Open Evening, speeches this week, and camp now only a couple of weeks away.
I need to thank all the staff for their outstanding support and for holding the fort last week. Their support is making things much easier for me.
Our Open Evening is on this Wednesday 24th August. I will be presenting what the school is planning for students of all year levels and how we are going to cater for our new group of Year 7-8 students. Please come along and invite anyone you know who might be interested in what we have to offer. This is an exciting time for the school.
It is Daffodil Day this Friday so wear something yellow. We will be having a Wheels Day on Friday to celebrate.
I am still looking for a family who has a little spare space and a little spare time to raise a couple of calves for the school. We had meal and milk powder donated by RD1 and if we can get someone to raise a couple of calves for the school it turns into a great fund raiser. My thoughts are that a family takes care of them until they are weaned and then they can be put in the paddock at the back of school to grow into money for the school. Please contact me if you can help.
Senior class speeches are coming along nicely. Please ask them to practice their speech to you. Our cluster competition is this Thursday 25th August, and runs from 11:15 till about 1pm. If you can help with transport please let me know.
Thanks to all of our families for their ongoing support.
Have a great week

McCAIN SCHOOL VEGGIE PATCHES PROGRAMME
Our school has registered for this year’s McCain programme and should have a visit from the McCain Red Veggie Truck and grower later in the year. We will be using the existing garden plots and hope the children will be able to plant a variety of vegetables that can be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone. Families at home can help us gain points towards gardening tools, seeds and equipment by purchasing selected McCain products and dropping the barcodes into the school. Thank you.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week! 20-27 August
We’re doing our bit to help by cleaning along the roadside from the school down to the corner. Weather permitting, we’ll be doing this on Thursday 25 August from 1.45pm to 2.30pm, but if the weather is terrible, we’ll go out on Friday 26 August instead. We’d love parents to help, so please come along with suitable footwear, clothing and gloves.

Dear Parents
Week 3 already and I can tell that this is going to be another term that flies along. I have had some very constructive feedback about our planned verandah, so to those who have taken the time to look at what we are planning and ensure that we are doing the best we can for our students, I thank you. If you haven’t had the chance yet, please come in and have your say.
This week I will only be at school Monday and Tuesday. I would like to thank our wonderful staff for all their help over the last few weeks. They are very kind and caring which is one of the things that makes our school the wonderful place it is.
I am looking for a family who has a little spare space and a little spare time to raise a couple of calves for the school.
If you have a pet calf, here is a great web site www.calfclub.co.nz. It has good tips on all areas of calf care and getting ready for calf club day.
I need to thank Ally for all the extras she is doing for our school. She has organised the donations from RD1, sausage sizzles for senior camp, and is still going with the planning of a trail ride event just to name a few things, so thanks Ally. The fundraising that Ally has organised has brought the senior camp cost right down. I will have a final figure after I find out what we raised with this weekend’s sausage sizzle (thanks to the parents who helped with this).
Senior class speeches are coming along nicely. Please ask them to let you know what they are talking about, as they may need things for props, and they will need to practise their speech to you. Our cluster competition is in week 4, Thursday 25th August.
12.00PM	CRAFT HALL & STALLS OPEN
OUR PET AND CRAFT DAY IS A MAJOR CELEBRATION OF OUR SPECIAL CULTURE
AS A COUNTRY SCHOOL, AND WE ENCOURAGE ALL OUR CHILDREN, THEIR FAMILIES
AND OUR COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS FABULOUS DAY

As well as bringing pets, children are able to present a variety of craft creations. Some of these are created at home, some will be done as part of school activities. Although this is not compulsory, children are encouraged to participate in as few or as many of these sections as they would like to.
Craft sections created at home are listed below. With our unpredictable weather lately, it may
be a fantastic opportunity to keep the children busy. All Entries need to be at the School Hall
by Friday 30 September, 9am. The hall will be closed for judging during that day.
The craft hall will be open to the public on Saturday 01st October at 12.00pm. You and your children will be able to see what they have achieved and admire their wonderful efforts.

SECTION 1:	Novelty Animal
This is to be made from vegetables or fruit. Use your imagination to create the animal of your choice or even invent a new one. Toothpicks are great for holding	the vegetable parts of your animal together
SECTION 2:	Arrangement of Flowers in a Novelty Container
Do you have an old gumboot, unusual container, egg cup, something that is different that you could hold water and flowers in? Add flowery and greenery to your container and you have an arrangement of flowers in a novelty container
SECTION 3:	Best Decorated Cake
Make a cake and decorate it in colours and designs of your choice. It could be a favourite character, nursery rhyme, sport, etc, with lots of colours and decorations. Use your imagination and have fun.
SECTION 4:	Cooking
3 Iced wine biscuits
3 pieces of Fudge
Please put the 3 pieces of cooking on a saucer and cover with clingfilm, thanks.
SECTION 5:	Best Dressed Teddy Bear/Cuddly Toy
Dress your favourite bears/toys up in fancy outfits and bring them along for the day.
SECTION 6:	Preschoolers Best Dressed Teddy Bear/Cuddly Toy
Preschoolers can join in with this section and dress up their favourite bears/toys in fancy outfits.
SECTION 7:	Lego
Get creative at home and build anything you like. It could be a character, vehicle, building, options are endless.
SECTION 8:	Woodwork
Construct/build a creation out of timber at home. As with our other sections, have fun in creating from your imagination.
SECTION 9:	Pet Rocks
Go on a hunt, or perhaps on a trip out, keep your eyes open for an unusual looking rock, big or small. Then using items at home, turn your rock into a pet. Could be a Pet Rock Animal, Alien, you decide.
SECTION 10	Decorate your Wheels
You guessed it, decorate your bike, scooter, skateboard, whatever you have on wheels. You can use anything, do anything, have fun.
SECTION 11:	Recycled Creations

The following message is from the Ministry of Health:
Measles symptoms
Measles is a highly infectious disease and is more serious than many people realise. Symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes and a runny nose, and then a rash which develops after about three days. Complications can include middle ear infections, pneumonia, and, more rarely, encephalitis or brain inflammation. About one in ten people infected need to be hospitalised.
The best measles prevention is the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine which is free for all New Zealand chilcren. Staff born during or after 1969 should also be vaccinated for measles.
People with measles must stay home
Any student or teacher with measles must stay away from school for seven days from the appearance of the rash and until recovery, depending on the advice of the medical officer of health. Unimmunised students, or those with no immunity to measles, who have been in close contact with a measles case during the infectious stages should stay away from school for 14 days from their last contact. This requirement is under the Health (Infectious and Notifiable Diseases) Regulations 1966 (Regulation 14). These exclusions also apply to students taking part in sporting events. Please follow the advice of the medical officer of health.
The current measles outbreaks are mainly affecting unimmunised school children in the Auckland, Waikato and Hawkes Bay regions.
More information:
Visit the Ministry of Health website http://www.moh.govt.nz or the Immunisation Advisory Centre website http://www.immune.org.nz. You can also phone the Immunisation Advisory Centre toll-free line 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863) for advice. If you would like to discuss these issues, please contact your local public health service. Dear Parents
We all had a busy week last week getting settled into another term. It was nice to hear about the exciting things students did during the holidays.
We have already started getting ready for Pet & Craft Day and I hope the kids are doing the same at home. If you don’t have a pet yet and you want a calf please let me know. The school will provide the calf and the milk powder. You will have to be committed to feeding and training your calf.
Senior class is also working hard on preparing their speeches. Please ask them to let you know what they are talking about, as they may need things for props, and they will need to practice their speech to you. Our cluster competition is in week 4, Thursday 25th August.
Our Open Evening will be in week 4 on Wednesday 24th August. I will be presenting what the school is planning for students of all year levels and how we are going to cater for our new group of year 7-8 students. Please come along and invite anyone you know who might be interested in what we have to offer. This is an exciting time for the school.
Thanks to all of our families for their ongoing support.
Have a great week
Bill Kaandorp

PET ENTRIES
Many thanks to all the families for their pet entries. If you still haven’t, please ring or see Ally by Wednesday.
I noticed on the entries, I gave no fee amount, which is $2.00 per animal and I also neglected to ask the pet’s name. So, I will resend out a form within the next 2-3 weeks requesting these details along with pet’s DOB and class for the calves.
ENROLMENTS FOR 2012 ARE NOW OPEN!!

We are a progressive school who would like to invite you to come and see what we can offer your child. We are a full primary school from 2012 running classes from Year 0 to Year 8.

We are a small family orientated school that was established in 1889. This makes us the oldest school in the area. Because of our age we have many old values that we treasure dearly. A few are…

honesty; respect; success; commitment; family participation

Linton Country School is very family and community focused. We cherish our community events such as ‘Lamb & Calf Day’, and use our back paddock to ensure every student has the opportunity to raise a pet and show it as their own.

Another one of the school’s treasures is our motto…

“To Thine Own Self Be True”

This has been the school’s motto since the school was established in 1889, and we feel that it has stood the test of time and holds a lot of mana and relevance in today’s world.

As you get to know the staff you will see that we are an innovative team that is totally committed to ensuring the success of all our students.

We are proud of our leading edge technology that we use to challenge our students and keep them up to date with this fast changing world.

Thank you for taking the time to see what a great school we are and what we have to offer. Please drop in any time to see us in action!
