USA Fellowship Program 2010-Carleton College

Fellowship Introduction:
Dale and Elizabeth Hanson Fellowship in Ethics
The fellowship, supported by a generous gift from Dale and Elizabeth Hanson, is designed to support student research in ethics. This fellowship is designed to allow students to pursue research in ethics that might be an extension of work they undertook in a class or to examine ethical questions as they relate to their major or more generally to explore issues that they would not be able to examine through current course offerings. Activities supported by this fellowship include, but are not limited to, traditional academic research. All fellowship recipients will work with a designated faculty member who will oversee the projects and organize communications between recipients to encourage the exchange of ideas. Recipients will be expected to produce some product at the end of the fellowship. A likely outcome would be an academic paper, but other possibilities can be discussed with the faculty director. Recipients may also be asked to make a public presentation based on their research.

Fellowship Eligibility:
This fellowship is intended for freshmen, sophomores and juniors for use during the summer of the year they apply (though students participating in summer academic programs may apply to use the fellowship in the term they are on leave in the subsequent academic year). Priority may be given to more advanced students. Students in any major are eligible. All applicants must be in good academic standing.
Dale and Elizabeth Hanson Fellowships will be awarded to qualified students to carry out independent research in ethics related to any field taught at Carleton College. Winners will be selected based on the quality and originality of the proposal and the qualifications of the applicant to successfully complete the project.

How to apply:
Applicants should submit SIX double-sided copies of their proposal to Elizabeth Ciner, Associate Dean of the College, in Laird 131. An electronic copy should also be submitted to Karen Moldenhauer. The application includes:

A Paragraph (no more than 100 words) describing the project.

Names of two recommenders. Please note that using Carleton faculty or staff as recommenders is usually the best choice. Non-Carleton recommenders may disadvantage you as they may not know Carleton and the selection committee does not know them. Use your judgment in this as in all other areas. (IMPORTANT: It is the student’s responsibility to ask faculty/staff for letters of recommendation by February 1st)
- Give the adviser and recommender a copy of your proposal.
- Faculty can submit the Faculty Recommendation Form or write a letter of support and send it to Elizabeth Ciner, Associate Dean of the College.
- Two letters of recommendations are required for all fellowships.

For research involving human subjects, Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications should be submitted electronically. If selected for a fellowship, IRB applications will then be considered for approval.

A description (of no more than 500 words, double-spaced) of the research to be undertaken.A brief statement (no more than 250 words) explaining your qualifications, interests and background for undertaking this work and the relationship of the research or project to your educational goaL

A budget (if relevant).

Permission to share your proposal with reviewers.

Scholarship Introduction: The One-World-Scholarship-Programme is directed at students from developing countries at Austrian Universities and is meant to contribute to the peaceful coexistence of people from different countries of origin by enhancing equal opportunities, dialogue, intercultural know-how and partnership. It has been established within the Austrian Cooperation for Education, and together with the other programmes it supports their concerns (struggle against poverty, resource conservation, peace-keeping etc.), the establishment and expansion of accordingly qualified personnel and the advancement of educational- and economic systems (capacity and institution development) with lasting effects.

It is complementary to other scholarship programmes and laid out globally, it enhances the ability for independent, creative, critical and self-determined thinking and acting and shall strengthen the competence for innovative problem solving strategies. The OWS contributes to the socially required production of knowledge and awareness, it promotes a global perspective and the creation of the globally educated citizen. It attaches a high significance to regional, international and trans-cultural networks. The programme is co-financed (government, church and private funds and own resources of the recipients of the benefits) and significantly contributes to the economic, social and cultural development of the southern countries.
