PhD Studentship in Solid State Chemistry (Scholarship)

A PhD studentship, supported by the Energy Technology Partnership, is available for a project in solid-state materials chemistry. The work, to be carried out in conjunction with an industrial partner, will involve the synthesis and characterisation of new thermoelectric materials, with the aim of producing power generation devices suitable for energy recovery from low-grade waste heat. Candidates should have or expect to gain a first or upper second-class degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline.

MADALGO advertises several postdoctoral and PhD student positions each year, under the supervision of Professor Lars Arge and Associate Professor Gerth S. Brodal at Aarhus University. Positions are advertised in mid fall for a February start and in mid spring for an August start. Currently several PhD and Postdoc positions are available with a August 2011 start.

PhD student positions

PhD student positions are administered through the Aarhus Graduate School of Science and include full tuition waiver and a very competitive scholarship. Applications are welcomed from students with at least three years of full-time study by August of 2011. Students with a strong background in the design and analysis of algorithms will be preferred. Students with background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are also very welcome to apply.

MADALGO Postdoc positions at the level of Research Assistant

Professor of Computer Science are initially for one year, but they can be extended by mutual consent. MADALGO welcomes Postdoctoral researchers with clearly demonstrated experience and skills in the design and analysis of algorithms and data structures. Researchers with experience with I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious or streaming algorithms, as well as with implementation of such algorithms (algorithm engineering experience), are preferred. The responsibilities of MADALGO Postdocs include work on algorithms for massive dataset problems in collaboration with center researchers, along with modest teaching responsibilities.

Interdisciplinary Geospatial Informatics Postdoc position

An Interdisciplinary Postdoc position is available. The position is initially for one year, but can be extended by mutual consent. The responsibilities of the Postdoc will include work on geospatial problems on the boundary between computer science and biology, more specifically between algorithms and ecology/biodiversity. The Postdoc should focus on problems in relation to computationally efficient use of modern detailed (and thus massive) topographic data in various global-change-relevant modeling applications. Modest teaching responsibilities may also be required. The Postdoc will be affiliated with MADALGO under the supervision of computer science Professor Lars Arge, but will also with researchers in the Ecoinfomatics & Biodiversity group at the Department of Biological Sciences under the supervision of Professor Jens-Christian Svenning. Applications are welcomed from computer science researchers with clearly demonstrated skills in the design, analysis and implementation of algorithms (preferably also with I/O-efficient algorithms), as well as from geoinformatics researchers with clearly demonstrated skills in GIS and programming. Researchers with interdisciplinary research experience will be preferred.

Central European University’s Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) invites applications for a two-year fixed-term post-doctoral Research Fellowship in the field of Eastern Mediterranean Studies, commencing September 2011.
The post is advertised in connection with the university’s twentieth anniversary celebrations in 2011. The successful candidate is expected to undertake research that complements and interfaces with the research of the Center’s faculty and students.

Central European University (CEU) is a graduate research-intensive university specializing primarily in the social sciences. It is located in Budapest, and accredited in the United States and Hungary. CEU’s mission is to promote academic excellence, state-of-the-art research, and civic engagement, in order to contribute to the development of open societies in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and other emerging democracies throughout the world. CEU offers both Master’s and doctoral programs, and enrolls more than 1,500 students from nearly 100 countries. The teaching staff consists of more than 140 resident faculty, from over 40 countries, and a large number of prominent visiting scholars from around the world. About the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies

The Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) promotes the study of the eastern Mediterranean and adjacent regions from antiquity, especially the Hellenistic oikoumene (323–30 BCE), to the end of the Ottoman period (1923).

The center perceives the Mediterranean as an ideal framework for the analysis of interconnections across geographical, chronological, imperial, religious and disciplinary boundaries, focusing on east-west interaction and exchanges, the movement of people, objects and ideas to and from the eastern Mediterranean, as well as imperial (dis)continuities through the Roman, Byzantine, medieval Islamic, and Ottoman eras.

In terms of teaching, CEMS faculty currently offers a non-degree specialization in Late Antique, Byzantine & Early Ottoman Studies under the auspices of CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies while contributing to the departmental core area of The Eastern Mediterranean from Constantine the Great to Suleyman the Magnificent as well as Ottoman & Turkish Studies at CEU.

CEMS currently has seventeen senior members affiliated with five CEU teaching units – the Departments of Philosophy, Medieval Studies, and History as well as the Jewish Studies Project and the recently established Source Language Teaching Group (SLTG) – and about twenty junior members among CEU’s postgraduate research students.

In addition to various research projects conducted by individual senior and junior members the Center is currently engaged in a collective curriculum development project on ‘The Caucasus and Byzantium from Late Antiquity through the Middle Ages’, involving colleagues from Armenia, Georgia and Turkey next to a group of international advisors (2011–2013).

Duties of post

The successful candidate is expected

* to conduct advanced research in any sub-discipline of the larger field of Eastern Mediterranean Studies (Hellenistic through early modern eras) under the theme of ‘Explorations east of the Mediterranean’, leading to a major publication (e.g., turning a doctoral thesis into a monograph, producing a peer-reviewed journal article, or similar);
* to promote the Center’s reputation and increase its visibility through his/her academic work (by means of publications, conference participation, etc.);
* to actively participate in and contribute to the academic life of the Center;
* to give advice to those research students affiliated with the Center who work in the Fellow’s field of expertise.

Title and affiliation of post

The title of the Fellow will be ‘20th Anniversary Post-doctoral Research Fellow’, with the field of research to be determined upon appointment in a way that will suit both the interests of the successful candidate and the Center.

The Fellow will be a senior member of the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies.

Duration of post

Twenty-four months commencing September 1, 2011, or as soon as possible therafter. The Research Fellowship is fixed-term and non-renewable.

Requirements

Applicants should have their PhD in hand by the beginning of the appointment in September 2011 and show promise of a distinguished career as a scholar; on the other hand, the PhD degree should not have been obtained earlier than 2007. Applicants should not hold a permanent university post. There is no citizenship requirement.

Selection criteria

* Innovativeness of the proposed project in combination with the candidate’s academic merits;
* relevance of the project to the Center’s and university’s wider research environment, including the Departments of Philosophy, Medieval Studies and/or History – ideally, the project will tie into the expertise currently exisiting in the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies while exploring new frontiers in humanities at CEU.

Knowledge of source languages currently underrepresented in the Center, such as Armenian, Coptic, Georgian or Persian, will be an advantage. Fluency in English is a requirement.

Stipend and bene?ts

The Research Fellow will receive a monthly non-taxable stipend of 2,000 EUR and is entitled to a research and travel allowance of 1,100 EUR per annum.
CEU will assist the successful candidate in obtaining a residence permit and provide health insurance cover if necessary.

Living in Budapest

The Fellow will have to arrange for his/her own accommodation, with assistance from the Center. It is no problem to find suitable downtown accommodation at very affordable rates.

The William T. Grant Foundation is accepting applications for the William T. Grant Scholars Program which is a professional development program for early-career researchers in the social, behavioral, or health sciences. The program differs from traditional research grants in that it supports career development.

Applications are invited from those who already have a promising track record, but seek a qualitative shift in their trajectory as researchers. Applicants identify areas in which they seek to expand their expertise, and propose five-year research plans to develop it.

The Foundation supports research to understand and improve the everyday settings of youth ages 8 to 25 in the United States. Funding is provided to studies that enhance our understanding of: (1) how settings work, how they affect youth development, and how they can be improved; and (2) when, how, and under what conditions research evidence is used in policy and practice that affect youth, and how its use can be improved.

Eligible Candidates

* Applicants must have received their terminal degree within seven years of submitting their application. We calculate this by adding seven years to the date the doctoral degree was conferred. In medicine, the seven-year maximum is dated from the completion of the first residency.
* Applicants must be employed in career-ladder positions at nonprofit institutions. For many applicants, this means holding a tenure-track position in a university. Applicants in other types of organizations should be in positions in which there is a pathway to advancement in a research career at the organization and the organization is fiscally responsible for the applicant’s position. Basic application requirements for Master Programs in Science and Engineering:

A four-year Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or science from a recognized institution with a major in the proposed field or evidence of suitable background for entering the proposed field.
A Grade-Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher on a scale of 4.00 or equivalent, and a GPA of 3.00 in the subject of the major field.

Basic application requirements for Ph.D. Programs:

An M.S. degree in engineering or science (after a four-year B.S. degree) from an institution whose graduate programs are equivalent to those of KFUPM, with a major in the proposed field or evidence of suitable background for entering the proposed field.
A minimum GPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 or equivalent in both B.S. and M.S. degrees.

Basic application requirements for M.B.A. and Executive M.B.A.:

A four-year Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution.
A Grade-Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 or equivalent.
At least one course in college level calculus which covers both differentiation and integration.
A working knowledge of computers as evidenced by at least one course in that area (e.g. data processing, programming, information systems, etc.)
At least one-year of full-time work experience. This requirement may be waived for graduate assistants, research assistants, and applicants with exceptional academic records.

We are looking for three PhD candidates at the AASS Learning Systems Lab of Örebro University, Sweden. The respective positions will address the following topics:

(1) Active 3D Perception for a Robot Unloading Containers

Research in this project can include fusion of visual and 3D range information (RGB-D sensing), feature-based object detection, concepts for active sensing, modelling shape deformations, and integration into a compact, semantic 3D world model. State-of-the-art range sensors are available for the work, including novel TOF cameras and, of course, the Kinect sensor.

(2) Hybrid Automatic Planning for a Robot Unloading Containers

The aim of this PhD project will be on fast generation of safe and reliable sequences of actions to unload objects of different types, shapes, and weights from a container using a specialized robotic arm. Specific research questions may include exploration of suitable representations for symbolic and sub-symbolic constraints in a unified framework, fast planning of trajectories based on the hybrid representation, and reasoning about uncertainty in the perceptual knowledge about the objects to manipulate.

(3) Safe and Flexible Navigation for Long-Term Operation of Professional Service Robots in Dynamic Environments

Research in this project can address new self-localization methods for robust long-term operation of autonomous vehicles in dynamic environments; methods for smooth, collision-free navigation at high speeds in the presence of static and moving objects; detection and tracking humans; efficient path planning using traffic rule information; and execution monitoring under consideration of traffic rules.

BBSRC Joint PhD Programme at Birkbeck and UCL

This in-depth interdisciplinary programme provides world-class PhD training in Structural, Computational and Chemical Biology.

Year 1
Your first year will provide training in the principals of biological sciences at the ISMB, and the opportunity to begin your own research. These rotations will provide you with the interdisciplinary and technical expertise to develop your PhD project.

You will also receive training from leading experts on elements of Structural, Computational and Chemical Biology and tuition in the skills needed to be an effective research scientist, including presentation skills, how to read and write a scientific paper and time management.

Year 2 – 4
Years 2-4 of the programme will be devoted to your PhD research project. You will give annual presentations to report on your progress and will have other opportunities to present your latest findings.

Project details

Antibody structures by constrained scattering modeling

Knowledge of intact antibody solution structures have high significance in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and immunology, yet often their properties are poorly understood. Neutron and X-ray scattering experiments provide diffraction data that can be combined with high resolution crystal structures to lead to medium resolution solution structures that explain how antibodies work. A multidisciplinary approach based also on analytical ultracentrifugation and sensor chip technologies provides further key insights on antibody stabilities.The four-year PhD project is primarily aimed at developing new modelling software packages based on high throughput strategies in order to provide more detailed neutron and X-ray antibody structures. This software will be publically available, made applicable to all types of macromolecules, and maximize the benefits of the scattering instruments at the Diamond and ESRF synchrotrons and ISIS neutron source. Simultaneously with the programming, the PhD project involves laboratory work with antibodies, including ultracentrifugation and sensor chip experiments, where we will determine the solution structures and properties of modified human IgA (important in mucosal immunology) and the human IgG subclasses (important in biotechnology).

Project Description
Tuberculosis is a devastating disease of humans and animals. Bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is a major zoonotic pathogen and causes losses to global agriculture of approx. €2.2 billion per annum. In order to develop strategies to control tuberculosis, we need to understand how the pathogen causes disease.
This project will explore the molecular basis of virulence in M. bovis. The student will focus on two methyltransferase genes that we have previously shown to be implicated in the infection process. The student will decipher the function of these proteins and be trained in a range of highly sophisticated molecular biology techniques, including mutagenesis studies, RNA-seq transcriptome analysis, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics.

Project Background
University College Dublin is the largest university in Ireland whose origin dates back to 1854. There are over 22,000 students including over 3,200 international students from more than 110 countries. The student will join a group of researchers investigating bovine tuberculosis, and will have access to outstanding research facilities at the Animal Genomics Laboratory, UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine and at the UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research.

A PhD student position in the area of quantum optics and solid-state physics is available at the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group at the Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands).

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanostructures with a three-dimensional confinement potential, resulting in a quantized energy structure and atom-like radiative emission properties. Single QDs in optical nanocavities provide an ideal framework to investigate cavity quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects in a solid-state environment, with important potential applications to quantum information processing. This project, funded by the Dutch Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM), aims at investigating the dynamic control of cavity QED effects by the application of ultrafast electric fields. By applying a time-dependent electric field on QDs in photonic crystal nanocavities, we will dynamically tune the exciton energy and therefore control the coupling with the cavity mode in a timescale faster than the spontaneous emission time. We aim at demonstrating the control of the photon waveform, and the generation of entangled light-matter states, by the control of the weak- and strong-coupling regime, respectively.

Job description

Successful candidates will conduct economic research in the area of renewable energy in Africa. The emphasis will be on empirical economic applications, guided by theory and policy analysis. Within this area, the candidates will have certain degrees of freedom for developing her or his own research topic. The research project will lead to completion of a PhD thesis. The project is embedded in the IS Academy on Renewable Energy (ReNeW) funded by the Dutch Ministry of Development Cooperation (DGIS). ReNeW is a collaboration between IVM, the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), and the Department of Environment and Water of the Dutch Ministry of Development Cooperation (DGIS).

This study investigates how policy makers and industry can promote the use of renewable energy in developing countries with the goal to improve access to affordable energy, reduce poverty and increase energy security at the national level while contributing to climate mitigation at the international level. We seek three PhD researchers each addressing one of the following tasks.
• Research theme I: Design commercially viable business models for the introduction of renewable energy in poor rural environments, in particular regarding financing structures, marketing strategies and technological specifications.
• Research theme II: Analyse (ex-post) the impact of the renewable energy technologies on households, while also developing a domestic household energy demand model accounting for renewable and non-renewable energy adoption in the African context.
• Research theme III: Investigate the adoption and diffusion of renewable energy technologies in a selective number of African countries by applying an innovation systems perspective.

The successful candidates are expected to have (1) affinity with issues of poverty and climate change with working experience in developing countries; (2) fluency in English (i.e. fluency in French will be considered an additional asset); (3) a cooperative attitude in different cultural environments; (4) an excellent academic background, including knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistics; and (5) the capacity to communicate results clearly to an wider audience. Depending on the research theme, the candidate should have:

Multimedia Information Retrieval Lab at Delft University of Technology,
the Netherlands, offers a PhD position funded by the European Union in
the project “PuppyIR - Information Retrieval for Children”.

Project Summary

PuppyIR (a new project funded by the EU 7th Framework) will provide an
open suite of components that can be used by system designers to tailor
IR systems for the specific needs of children. Current Information
Retrieval (IR) systems are designed for adults: they return information
that is unsuitable for children, present information in lists that
children find difficult to manage and make it difficult for children to
ask for information. PuppyIR will develop new interaction paradigms that
allow children to express their information needs simply and have
results presented in an intuitive way. It will develop Information
Services that can summarise content for children, moderate information
for children, help children safely build social networks and
intelligently aggregate for presentation to children.

Role in Project

The PhD student in Delft studies the retrieval models and their
implementation to support the interfaces and interaction styles
specialized for children’s behaviour when accessing information online
(developed by other project participants). The student contributes
solutions in the areas of multimodal presentation technology, text and
multimedia content mining, and natural language processing of children’s
texts. Specifically, the Delft contribution concentrates on a query
assistance module based on entity retrieval and expert finding
approaches, social network analysis, and, moderated discovery of
information guided by opinion detection. Research prototypes are made to
extend and exploit the PuppyIR open source framework. The PhD student
also participates in the tasks to identify what evaluation measures make
sense for evaluation of search tools for children, and contributes to
the development of test collections for the system-oriented evaluation
of search algorithms for children.

Requirements for the PhD student

* Degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computational
Linguistics or Cognitive Science
* Strong technical background in Machine Learning and/or Information
Retrieval
* Excellent programming skills
* Good command of the English language
* Sincere interest in learning about how to adapt search technologies to
the cognitive abilities of children
Appointment and Salary

The full-time appointment is temporary for four years. The starting
salary is ˆ 2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of ˆ 2612 gross
per month in the fourth year. Moreover, an 8% bonus share (holiday
supplement) and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% is provided annually, as
well as excellent secondary benefits. The preferable starting date is
1st September 2009.

Context and Objective
The human development approach puts people at the centre of development. It recognizes economic drivers for change but goes beyond them to raise issues of enlarging human capabilities and expanding people’s choices. The objective of the Academic Fellowship is to encourage young Ph.D. students from the Asia Pacifific region to analyse critical development issues from a human development perspective, contributing to development theory, applications and policies. Thus, the Fellows are expected to push the frontiers of research on human development while analyzing, through the human development lens, issues directly or indirectly related to human development. Theme – Climate Change and Human Development
Human development is about expanding human potential and enlarging human freedom. Climate change is a human development challenge, as it threatens to erode human freedoms and limit choice and plunge large numbers into poverty and hardship.

Climate change is hampering efforts to deliver the MDG promise as it undermines international efforts to combat poverty and exacerbates already existing inequalities. Those, in turn, can result in an increase in conflict over sharing natural resources. Climate change is in fact an increasingly powerful driver of wider inequalities between and within countries, also between women and men.

Climate change can result in increased frequency of extreme weather events, flooding, storms, drought, increases in sea temperatures, and melting of glaciers, etc., which effect negatively agriculture and health/nutrition. This has negative implications on the livelihood of poor and vulnerable communities who depend largely on agriculture and natural resource management. In particular, women are affected in their roles of food producers and providers, guardians of health, and care givers. Reduced employment opportunities, for example for women working in agricultural fifields, constitute a net loss in income which leads to a loss in savings, making it even harder for households to cope with disasters.

The magnitude of this long term challenge can be assessed considering that an additional 1.8 billion people are expected to face water stress by 2080, with large areas of Central Asia, northern parts of South Asia and northern China facing a grave ecological crisis as a result of glacial retreat and changed rainfall patterns. Up to 330 million people in coastal and low-lying areas are expected to be displaced through flflooding and tropical storm activity. In the Asia Pacific region, in particular, over 70 million people in Bangladesh and 22 million people in Viet Nam could be affected by global warming-related flflooding.

What are the mechanisms through which the ecological impacts of climate change affect the poor? Are there examples of good practices to ensure climate and human security?

Have climate change and other environmental concerns been integrated in development planning in the context of environment protection and sustainable development? What has been the effectiveness of policies introduced? What is a possible agenda to promote human development and climate security? These are some of the questions that could be addressed.

The Fellowship
The UNDP Human Development Academic Fellowship for Asia Pacific carries an award of US$ 10,000. The students will be required to submit to UNDP a copy of their fifinal approved dissertation. In addition, Fellows may be expected to present their work in workshops/seminars and other events arranged by UNDP (travelrelated costs will be covered separately).

The thesis will acknowledge UNDP’s support by saying: “The author acknowledges the financial support received from the UNDP Asia Pacific Human Development Academic Fellowship for the research.”

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral
Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral
degree for research and training in selected areas of biology
supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development
in biology. The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage
of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and
training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless
of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site. For FY
2010, these BIO programs are

(1) Broadening Participation in Biology and

(2) Biological Informatics.

In future years, these areas will change as new scientific and
infrastructure opportunities present themselves; and this solicitation
will be changed to reflect the areas being funded. The fellowships are
also designed to provide active mentoring of the Fellows by the
sponsoring scientists who will benefit from having these talented
young scientists in their research groups. The research and training
plan of each fellowship must address important scientific questions in
contemporary biology within the scope of the BIO Directorate and the
specific guidelines in this fellowship program solicitation. Because
the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in
their careers, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the
availability of BIO fellowships with their graduate students early in
