Freeware of the Day / 11.Nov.09

Original Name: Free SMTP Server
Webpage: http://www.softstack.com/freesmtp.html
Latest Version: 2.5
Available for GNU/Linux?: No.
Available for Mac?: No.

Free SMTP Server is... well, a SMTP Server. And it's... well, free!. No many things to explain about it, isn't it? I've been asked under comments for a free SMTP Server, so here it is. (Even though you can configure Gmail SMTP for your personal use, if you dunno how to do it mp me). This little app works directly to the point and allows you to install a personal SMTP and to use it on whatever place you are instead of using the ISP' one or whatever you've been thinking on.

Works on almost all e-mail apps (tested on Thunderbird and Outlook 2007) and it's very intuitive and easy to use, with included documentation. Totally freeware, allows you to set the DNS server you want as well as the SMTP port you'll be using; meanwhile you keep on using this tool for mass mailing or just for your travels and playing with it emailing to the ones you want. Give it a shot, probably it isn't the best one, but it's free and works easily with some tweaks on some cases.

- Download the build here.

Go programming with Google

Google has started a new programming language, called "Go". (Simple name, uh?) And no, it isn't for the PSP Go.

Combining C++ with Python functionality that much used on Google apps, Go programming language stuff can be found here with some examples and a quick tour.

Will give a shot for this one and make some other futher posts in the following days.

Freeware of the Day / 10.Nov.09

Original Name: Roundcube
Webpage: http://roundcube.net/
Latest Version: 0.3.1
Available for Windows?: No
Available for Mac?: No.

Roundcube is a pretty known webmail browser-based that works under an LAMPP server, allowing IMAP and XHTML/CSS standards. Totally open-source, this is a pretty interesting web-email-service for servers that works on your language (up to 65 different languages) and that is, of course, totally free of charge. Between the interesting features we can find the fully implemented privacy solution, the multiple identities for the senders, a smart search while you type, and the possibility of adding an external SMTP server.

You'll just need the usual stuff, Apache, PHP, SQL, and your IMAP/SMTP servers for getting it working. A simple, clean and free solution for your mailing needs that, on the future will implement many other interesting features that will make your work even simpler. You can easily use the Wiki or the Support Forum for solving your first doubts, even though it's pretty intuitive, so you won't have any problem configuring this with your server.

- Download the build here. Installing instructions.

Freeware of the Day / 09.Nov.09

Original Name: CDBurnerXP
Webpage: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
Latest Version: 4.2.7.1801
Available for GNU/Linux?: No.
Available for Mac?: No.

CDBurnerXP is another great freeware CD/DVD/BR/HD-DVD burning tool. Allows you to create ISO' files, and burn them directly onto any disc you are thinking on. Yeah, also that one. And that one. Also, if what you do need is for Audio CD's, you can also use this little one to even insert gaps between the tracks, and as it's multilanguaje you won't find any problem when using it.

A very extensive help with all the possible topics and of course OpenSource and totally free, you can start using this immediatly! However, ImgBurn seems better as a free burning app, even though this is also cool enough to talk about it :-)

- Download the build here.

iPoPS updated to 1.1

We've already talked about iPoPS, here. If you are looking for a solution for playing with your Popstation (aka PSX on PSP) under your Mac, this is your best solution.

Updated recently to version 1.1, it allows you now to compress the eboot, and you can use it now under PPC systems, as the changelog says. Of course, it's open-source, so you won't have problems with this little thing here. Recommended.

Be sure to grab it and give it a shot! Thanks to GTOnizuka for the tip :-)

Freeware of the Day / 08.Nov.09

Original Name: Irssi
Webpage: http://irssi.org/
Latest Version: 0.8.14
Available for GNU/Linux?: Yes.
Available for Mac?: Yes.

Irssi is one of the only free and open-source IRC/SILC/ICB clients that you will find, that works on Windows, Linux and Mac. Working on a window-based mode, it's pretty simple and easy to use, but it's also powerfull and works exactly for all of your IRC relay needs. You will be able of autologging to your favourite channels, and even though it's quite complicated at first to configure, there is a pretty interesting documentation that will help you on your first steps.

However, the most cool things about this client might be the possibility of changing themes, the one that makes you able of scripting under it, and a pretty cool one: a "paste" detection, that allows you to abort a huge paste when it's being pasted for error under a channel you didn't meant to. Wish I had this feature some months ago... lol. However, i'm still happy with my Xchat2 (that i'll talk about someday later), but this one we'll have to admit that is well built.

- Download for Windows: here.

- Download for GNU/Linux: here. (Sources)

- Download for Mac: here.

Freeware of the Day / 07.Nov.09

Original Name: AnalogX Netstat Live
Webpage: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm
Latest Version: 2.15
Available for GNU/Linux?: No.
Available for Mac?: No.

AnalogX Netstat Live is a pretty simple and direct to the point freeware app. It is a easy to handle TCP/IP monitor that allows you to know how is your DSL/cable/modem/whatever connection is up to, so you can know "how fast your connection really is". Probably this isn't a big deal, but it graphs directly your TCP/IP main data, output and input flows, and even your CPU consume. All stored on a single tray icon that can be configured for auto starting with Windows.

You don't have a version for GNU/Linux or Mac, but we all know that there are already widgets for this kind of stuff for those Operating Systems, don't we? Alright, there are also for Windows, but I wouldn't like to install a sidebar handler or something for just using a couple of them. If you want to check this thing out, be awared to read the documentation and to think about it as if you were testing your connection. How fast is yours?

- Download the build here.

Freeware of the Day / 06.Nov.09

Original Name: Abiword
Webpage: http://www.abisource.com/
Latest Version: 2.8.1
Available for GNU/Linux?: Yes.
Available for Mac?: No.

Abiword is one of the very best word processing freeware and open-source that you will find. Works pretty the same as the commercial version of Microsoft Word would be, and you can even collaborate with other people under the same document within AbiCollab.net service, some kind of virtual storage for your files, a personalized DropBox.

Works both on Windows and Linux (and also *BSD and Solaris) but not on Mac, you are able of reading any sort of document created by other office systems, and being multilingual allows you to handle it on your own language. Even if this wasn't enough, you can extend its functionality with Plugins, that will allow you to have even a better freeware.

- Download for Windows: here.

- Download for GNU/Linux: here. (Ubuntu, others just check the repos)

- Download sources: here.

Freeware of the Day / 05.Nov.09

Original Name: AIMP2
Webpage: http://www.aimp.ru/index.php
Latest Version: 2.60RC3
Available for GNU/Linux?: No.
Available for Mac?: No.

AIMP2 is a great and free player that is growing the same time as VLC does. Being able to play many formats (MP1, MP2, MP3, MPC, MP+, AAC, AC3, OGG, FLAC, APE, WavPack, Speex, WAV, CDA, WMA, S3M, XM, MOD, IT, MO3, MTM, and UMX), works flawlessly and has a great design. Even though the creators are russian, this app is multilingual, and you can easily extend this use with all the plugins they have in order for making it even better.

It has by default many Shoutcast and Icecast servers, you can search and download cover arts for your albums, and the embedded library makes this a pretty nice addition to this series, always Freeware stuff. There are many different skins available (that makes it more friendly, even though this isn't that needed for a player) and you can make your own skin with the skin editor.

- Download the build here.

Freeware of the Day / 04.Nov.09

Original Name: Instant Eyedropper
Webpage: http://instant-eyedropper.com/
Latest Version: 1.75
Available for GNU/Linux?: No.
Available for Mac?: No.

Instant Eyedropper is one of the best tools a webmaster/web developer should have always at the reach of his hand. With this little and really effective tool, you will be able to, within just a click, identify the HTML color code of any pixel that you have on the screen at that moment. It's pretty simple. It's installed as a tray icon, you click and hold, you move the "eye" to the pixel you want, and you release the button. And ta-da! The HTML code of that color will be on your clipboard. Easy, uh?

Just working under Windows, this is the easiest way you'll find of getting those codes from a webpage or from whatever you are working on. This way, you are able of identifying any of the color codes you might think of (HTML, HEX, Delphi Hex, Visual Basic Hex, RGB, or HSB). Nothing more to say about this tool. Just try it and you'll see that it's a very simple one that solves this specific problem and that will work for you, web developer.
