Flemish newspaper graphs

Inspired by Wilbert Baan's graph of the circulations of Dutch newspapers, I decided to look into the CIM website for the circulation numbers of the Flemish newspapers. Unfortunately, I couldn't find all Q2 figures of the recent years, so you'll have to do with the complete numbers of 2007, 2008 and the numbers of 2009 so far.

Of course these numbers can be a bit misleading because 2009 hasn't been taken into account completely. What strikes most is the slow growth of the free newspaper Metro, and the heavy fluctuations of the two main newspapers. For Het Nieuwsblad, this can be partly explained by the merge with the newspaper Het Volk, in which Het Nieuwsblad originally got all the Volk subscribers.

The pie chart on the 2009 circulation numbers is displayed above. Het Laatste Nieuws and Het Nieuwsblad are obviously the biggest newspapers.

This graph shows the circulation numbers aggregated over the different companies.

And here's the pie chart of the companies. Three big players, and one small one, that is half owned by one of the big ones.

Finally, I also aggregated the circulation numbers based on the type of newspaper: popular, quality, regional, financial, and free. I know these are questionable categories, but I went with it anyway. Most are stable, with the popular category fluctuating a lot.

And this is the final pie chart. Popular newspapers have more than half of the circulation market.

Embedded publishing in Perspective

Of course, I don’t want to brag about the great visionary insights that Jan Bierhoff and I have (wink), but it’s interesting to see that the notion of embedded publishing is getting more interest. Last Friday, I was at the kick-off meeting of the 3D project, where Johan Boermann, director of Media Groep Limburg, gave a talk on the Perspectief (Perspective) project being developed at the two local newspapers in the Dutch province of Limburg.

In short: they will divide their output into news on the one side, and background and service information on the other side. The second group will be put into a matrix structure, consisting of sixteen thematic interest groups and five geographical regions. For several euros a month, a reader can subscribe to a bundle, e.g., health and lifestyle in the Maastricht region.

The interesting aspect is the new role of the journalist in this project. Instead of creating content, it will be a job of gathering and collecting information and republishing them in the right bundle. The content itself can be created by other professional media outlets, or by embedded publishers from the region. In the presentation, the example of the local hospital as a content creator was given.

Embedded publishing avant la lettre. It’s nice to see that the people at MGL apparantly studied our report well.

Bart Brouwers, who also attended the meeting, described and criticised the project on his own (Dutch) weblog. While his points make much sense to me, I tend to strongly disagree with his third point. According to Brouwers, content that is not interesting enough for the audience to be marketed and published by the hospital itself, is probably of a too low quality.

But this is not a matter of quality but rather of audience. While Brouwers, me and most readers of this blog will probably be internet-savvy enough to find our own information from direct sources, the majority of people is not used to this, and probably not even interested in it. For years, readers relied on media to find and select the interesting pieces of information. No-one read the telex of the press agencies, let alone that they picked up the phone to ask a local expert for an opinion on current affairs. Why would one expect this to be any different on the internet? Even the more technologically educated users rely for a large part on weblogs and social networks to link to interesting content.

What MGL understood very well is that they still have the audience. They are creating a win-win situation in which the most suitable party deliver the goods: the embedded publishers provide the content, while the local news outlet still has the podium and the audience.

In fact they are following the fourth strategy in the report written by Jan Bierhoff and me: faciliation.

There are still many question marks around the Perspectief project. Whether users will really cough up money for this kind of information, for instance. But the good thing is that a media outlet is re-evaluating it’s own role, and is looking for the core asset that might still be of economic value in the future. In this case it’s not the content or the journalistic skills, but it’s the audience.

Interesting, Financial Times Deutschland has four different homepages for four different user profiles: the classic reader, the quick reader, the one who’s hungry for opinions, and the picture watcher. (See the four options on the top left on their homepage.)

Living in Belgium can be very rewarding, at least that is my impression after six months. Life here presents itself with a very pleasing mixture of laid-back enjoyance and absurd comedy. However, you do need the right mind set to appreciate it.
I realised this fifteen minutes ago, while I was queueing at the Delhaize supermarket, and I got to talk with the Englishman in front of me. The queue only progressed very slow, because the clumpsy cashier for some reason had to do a lot of other stuff, like typing the digits of zip codes into his teller machine. The Englishman, being only in Brussels for a few days of holidays, got annoyed by the delay and started complaining to me. Can you believe this is the capital of Europe?, he asked me.
Yes, actually I can. I don’t know if the European politicians were infected by the Brussels spirit after their arrival, or that they sought out this place as their capital with their own politics in mind, but it’s a perfect match. Bureaucracy, inefficiency, it is all deeply rooted in heart of the Belgium.
This country is everything the Dutch try not to be. It’s inefficient, inconsistent, and often failing. Yet, it doesn’t collapse. Belgium teaches us that we don’t have to be pretty, rich or capable to still be lovely. We can just show our human side.
The right attitude to still be smiling after six months is not that of the Englishman. He thought he could quickly get his beers and walk out of that store within a minute. Surely, he got frustrated. No, the right mind set was mine. Before I walked into that store, I knew it could take five minutes, fifteen, or maybe even longer. I also knew that in exchange, I would see something beautiful: imperfection at work.
When you are ready to accept the Belgian pretentiousnessless, it will welcome you with a beautiful lifestyle.

Press Freedom Index 2009

Reporters Sans Frontières (Reporters Without Borders) has released its Press Freedom Index 2009. The index measures “the state of press freedom in the world. It reflects the degree of freedom that journalists and news organisations enjoy in each country, and the efforts made by the authorities to respect and ensure respect for this freedom.”

The good news is that my home country and my current country of residence are doing very well. The Netherlands is 6th, while Belgium ranks on spot 11 of the list which contains 175 countries. While notorious countries like Iran and North Korea receive a penalty score of over a hundred, The Netherlands and Belgium score 1 and 2,5 respectively.

Sadly, RSF does not give clear information on why the countries received those negative points. They do list the questionnaire used, which contains points like the illegal detention of reporters, state monopolies in media and self-censorship of privately owned media.

As these lists are for a significant part based on incidents, and only those known, the numbers shouldn’t be put under a magnifying glass. However, it does serve well to spot trends.

For instance, the top-10 is completely European, with Scandinavia and Ireland leading the pack. However, important countries like France (43), Spain (44) and Italy (49) score badly. In the ‘newer’ EU member states, the situation ranges from very good (Estonia, 6) to mediocre (Bulgaria, 68).

And for those wondering, closing the list are Burma, Iran, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea.

(On a side note: Interesting that Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant proclaims Denmark the number one, while when studying the reports one can see that five countries ended up on the number-one spot and were ordered alphabetically.)

I find it funny when bands with those ‘rude’ names turn out to make pretty sweet music. It reminds me of The Tough Alliance in that sence. Glorifying hooliganism and swinging baseball bats on stage, while at the same time they have the most poppy songs ever.

Ditto, I love these little surprises you usually find at the end of really pumped up albums. It’s like “Tell Me What To Swallow” by Crystal Castles which is more of a post rock song than the electro/punk/noise that the rest of the album is all about.

Sometimes people tell me that they don’t understand that font designs can be copyrighted, let alone that you need to acquire a license to use them. Well, here you have it: NBC is being sued $2mln by font-design agency Font Bureau for illegally copying and using their work.

@Wilders Oproepen tot grof geweld tegen moslims op PVV-gezinde sites als Het Vrije Volk. Wat gaat de PVV daar aan doen? Niks? Waarom niet? 21 minutes ago from web

@Wilders PVV-aanhangers bedreigen en belasteren andersdenkenden. Schelden moslima’s uit voor ‘moslimhoer’. Waarom zegt de PVV niks? 22 minutes ago from web in reply to Wilders

@Wilders Regelmatig roomblanke amokmakers in de trein van Dordrecht naar Leerdam en terug. Interesseert ‘t de PVV?? Zo nee, waarom niet? 24 minutes ago from web in reply to Wilders

@Wilders Laatst in A’dam belaagd en bedreigd door een blanke, autochtone Mokummer. Maakt de PVV zich daar ook druk om? Zo nee, waarom niet? 30 minutes ago from web in reply to Wilders
