David Clugston Shoots Nano Spy Drone Story for Business Week

David Clugston, renowned still life photographer has photographed some interesting gadgets in his day, from smart phones, guns, x-boxes, human brains and watches, just to name a few. Last month David had the pleasure of shooting some pretty amazing nano spy drones for a story in Bloomberg Business Week called Flight of the Warbots.

An unlikely industry leader of this explosion of flying robots, and maker of the Raven-B, is a small Los Angeles-area company called AeroVironment (AVAV). It produces 85 percent of the unmanned aerial systems used by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Defense Dept. Measured by number of units deployed, AeroVironment is America’s top maker of surveillance drones. But rather than merely spy, this toy-size drone can kill: When its operator spots an enemy, Switchblade locks on, turns into a missile, and blows up the target. “I think Switchblade, like our other small UAVs, is going to plug a hole in [the military’s] arsenal,” says Tim Conver, chief executive of AeroVironment.

Marcy Maloy Goes to the Circus

Marcy Maloy, San Francisco & New York based children and lifestyle photographer, has been known to dabble in the circus arts. A trapeze artist herself, Maloy recently combined her love of photography with her love of the circus on a test photoshoot at Oakland’s Trapeze Arts. “A few months ago I heard this song by Charlie Chaplin, Swing Little Girl. It was my inspiration for this shoot, it’s about a sad trapeze artist,” says Maloy. "The two sisters who modeled for me had never been on a trapeze before but the team at Trapeze Arts coached them along. Rina Jordan Takes on Napa for a Cookbook Photoshoot

Food photographer Rina Jordan has been busy the last five months. Since August Jordan has been to Napa four times documenting various wineries and restaurants for an up and coming cookbook called Wine Country Chef's Table from Globe Pequot. The book, written by Roy Breiman the Culinary Director at Cedarbrook lodge, will be available sometime in mid 2012. Rina estimates that she took approx 15,000 shots. over the four week long trips. "I now have a gorgeous collection of amazing images from Napa. It's definitely a project I will remember for a very long time," says Rina. The images include not only mouth watering food and wine shots but also an array of interiors, landscapes, still life and portraiture. " It was a great opportunity to tell a visual story about the process of producing fresh food and wine, " says Rina. "I have such an appreciation for the work of vintners, restaurant owners, chefs, and farmers. Their passion and effort make life delicious for the rest of us." Marcy Maloy Shoots British Editorial Fashion Story

Fashion lifestyle photographer Zee Wendell headed east earlier this month to Joshua Tree California for her latest fashion story. "I wanted to shoot fall apparel in a dry, arid environment," says Zee. "Joshua Tree is a beautiful landscape with lots of great desert backgrounds and wide open blue sky. I like the juxtaposition of the high fashion model against a dry, western backdrop." Zee worked on this shoot with some of her favorite collaborators stylist Emily Maslow and hair and makeup artist Shannon Rasheed.

Interior photographer Alex Hayden recently wrapped a photoshoot in Boston for his longtime client Magnolia Audio Video. While on a "photo break" he happened upon Plymouth Rock. A sometime history buff, Alex got his camera out and shot he landmark which as you can see is carefully marked with the date 1620. "Ah, the perks of being a photographer," says Hayden who promises to offer up this image to his son when the appropriate academic need arises.

Campaign Synopsis: A man wants to cut down on some of his monthly bills, so he comes up with a way to get free electricity when he's using his home computer. He trains three guinea pigs to row a tiny boat to generate electricity. Actually, one of the guinea pigs is coaching the other two by saying "row,row,row"

Seattle Still Life Photographer David Clugston collaborates with retoucher Janko Williams for a Wired Magazine Shoot. The result? A circus game full of Dalmatian puppies with square spots and a mechanical claw. "This was a fun and challenging job," says Clugston. "We had one very well behaved puppy to work with so we shot him in a variety of ways, including being lifted by the claw. Janko then put it all together in post, including the square spots." John Granen Shoots Boeing Future of Flight Aviation Center Presentation Door with the First 787 Delivered

Photographer John Granen had to move quickly, since he only had a 15 minute window to shoot the Future of Flight presentation door designed by Freiheit and Ho Architects. The Boeing Company spared no expense with the design of the presentation door. The door contains over seven tons of glass and is approximately 30’ X 45”. It is an amazing architectural feature of the Boeing Future of Flight facility and was staged with their state-of-the art 787 in view. “Once the door was opened, preparation was key to insure we had the right views and backup cameras in place,” says Granen. When the door was shut, whe had the shot ‘in the can.’ It was a thrill to shoot and my client loved the results.” John Granen specializes I photography of architecture and interior design.

Master Retoucher Janko Williams Strikes Again

Janko Williams, photo retoucher extraordinaire, has a unique ability to transform strong images into stunning ones with a heightened sense of reality.

In the first image, we see that the focus is obviously on the hair. According to Janko, the biggest challenge with this image was to get the hair to flow naturally. The shot is actually a composite of 6-7 different individual shots, stitched together seamlessly. Another challenge was to get the hair looking perfectly smooth, especially in the transition between the highlights and shadows.

In the second image, the main challenge was to make the skin look flawless yet natural. A combination of lighting and makeup yielded an image that emphasized the model's facial blemishes. Janko was able to remove the blemishes while retaining enough of the skin's natural texture

We're excited to hear that Gray Magazine, a new publication devoted to design in the Pacific Northwest is launching soon!

According to Shawn Williams, Creative Director/Publisher, "Gray is a bimonthly print and digital magazine for and about design connoisseurs who have a specific interest in the Pacific Northwest as a creative region. Covering both residential and commercial design, topics range from stunning architecture and interiors to innovative industrial and tech design, from exceptional fashion to inspiring conceptual projects."

A sneak peek online issue is coming out soon, and their first print issue launches in December. We've seen a number of lifestyle magazines such as Metropolitan Home, Seattle Homes and Lifestyles, and Domino close down. Gray promises to offer a fresh new publication to fill that void, and a great venue to showcase the work of exceptionally talented photographers such as Alex Hayden and John Granen.

Roger Snider Inspired by Peterbilt "Class Pay" 70s Trucking Campaign

Commercial photographer Roger Snider has recently wrapped a personal project he calls "Class Pays" 21st Century Reboot. Inspired by the images from the Peterbilt campaign of the 70s called "Class Pays" Roger embarked upon his new, more modern version of the concept. The images are feminine and ethereal and always backed up with a big macho truck. "I have been shooting big rig trucks and the trucking culture for many years, I wanted to add some"sexiness" to the visual narrative. Trucks are so male, and macho and sexy in their own way. I wanted to add women back into the story with a nod to the vintage ads of the 70s when trucking was hot." Alex Hayden, interior photographer, just wrapped a series of photographs documenting the work from Shed , a local Seattle architecture and design firm. The three projects Hayden shot were local Seattle haunts: Marination Station, High 5 Pie and Little Water Cantina. All were small, concept restaurants with visually distinct personalities which Alex captured beautifully.

" The house is approximately 700 square feet which made capturing the space fun but challenging," says Hayden. When I told my sports obsessed, funny commercial impersonating sons (I have three of them) that I was representing the photographer who shot Dos Equis "The Most Interesting Man in the World," they about fell out of their chairs. "Do you know that campaign," I asked. Know that campaign? My boys reenact that campaign on a daily basis.

When I showed this shot to them (see above) they were star struck. Suddenly they became much more interested in my career. Up until now the only interest they have shown is my career was my ability to put food, and lots of it on the table. Roger Snider, photographer extraordinaire doesn't just photograph the Most Interesting Man in the World--he hangs out with the guy. Roger, you're gaining some points in my household!
