Zoundme, A quiz app that you have never experienced before. Hearing and seeing are our two most important senses and in combination they make up most of our daily experiences. O2 On Its Way To Take Over Jajah for 200M$

Most of the blogs are writing that Jajah is Israeli VoIP start up. like “O2 to Acquire Israeli Startup Jajah for $200 Million” but infect Jajah exactly belongs to Austria, they have their development team in Israel. Since long Jajah was in gossips that it is in bidding war and some big names are ready to acquire Jajah but finally now its announced that O2 has officially take over Jajah for 200M$.

It was believed that Microsoft and Cisco were two other companies that were vying to get the company. Back in June, the company served up its 1 billionth VoIP call. While the company has some 15 million subscribers of its own, many of the calls originate from Yahoo Messenger, which has used Jajah since 2008 for its VoIP calls. They also have a deal in place with Microsoft.

The company has raised over $30 million in funding over four rounds. They are backed by the likes of Sequoia and Intel Capital. O2 is the mobile arm of Telefónica Europe, and had been considered the company with only an outside shot at the acquisition, especially considering Microsoft’s partnership with Jajah. Earlier reports indicated the price could be driven as high as $400 million in a bidding war, instead it appears to have stayed on the low side. Source

Facebook launched a new real-time search engine on the same day that it bought FriendFeed and Google announced a new infrastructure project aimed at speeding up its indexing time. Make no mistake about it: people that know search believe that there’s gold in real-time and social data, and Facebook’s blockbuster acquisition of FriendFeed was a lob squarely across Google’s bow.

Facebook has always been in a position to take a lead in real-time and social search because of the sheer amount of data the site has collected about what people are doing, the things they’re interested in, and what their social graph looks like. Goolel seems the real competitor of Google Voice, it covers almost all the features of GV except the VoIP calls. Goolel should go for WiFi calling options like Truphone or Vopium, this will make it perfect application. Goolel is a Gurgaon based startup that is trying to build a meta social network (and more) on your mobile phone. Once you download the app, you can configure all your IMs, push mail services (Gmail/Yahoo and Hotmail) as well as use Goolel’s India focused chat rooms.

Goolel has also built a browser of its own, which it claims to optimize web pages by a significant percentage and startup’s advisory board includes veterans from BSNL, UTStarcomm and Unisys. While all this may sound fancy, I am not sure whether people are ready to try out new social networks or whether Goolel should instead position itself as a meta push mail/IM service (the space is anyways crowded with Fring, Mig33 etc). The only uptake that I see is startups’ relationship with operators/telecom companies (advisory board speaks of that) – will help them in closing deals with operators. Source..

Vonage the first VoIP call provider has just planed to take over the mobile VoIP market, Although current competitors Skype, Truphone, Nimbuzz or Vopium is still struggling to get their share and at the same time Google Voice is on its way to launch their application.
Web-calling provider Vonage will come out with a version of its service for smartphones in the second half of 2009. “The time is right to take advantage of the penetration rate of smartphone devices and Wi-Fi by providing branded mobile applications,” Vonage spokesman Charles Sahner tells BusinessWeek.com. The move was first reported in this story.

The plan is to offer a Vonage app for all of the leading smartphones. “We are talking to the big guys, those most material to the market,” Sahner says. The company plans to enable cheap long-distance and international calling via cellular networks as well as Wi-Fi hotspots. It’s also playing with advanced features, which might allow users to link their home and mobile phones and the computer, he says.

Vonage’s apps could prove to be a major wake-up call for Skype, Truphone and other companies that already offer cheap calling via the iPhone and other mobile devices. Today, Vonage is servicing some 2.6 million lines, used by consumers and small businesses to make calls via a fixed broadband connection and a special modem. Many of these users may wish to also use Vonage’s service on the go.

The smartphone service could also help Vonage attract new users, which might have opted for Skype or Truphone before. An infusion of customers would be most welcome as, for months now, Vonage has struggled with growth. It lost 6,000 customer lines in the first quarter. Source..

Google entering into new market with Voice service for Blackberry and Android devices, Now that will be interesting to watch that how Google act as phone company. Google recently announced that it was going to make the Voice service widely available to users in the U.S. soon.

These mobile versions of the Google Voice service will allow folks to not only manage their Google Voice connections –- to access and playback voice mails, send and receives SMS messages and read message transcripts — but also make local and long distance calls from mobile phones. The apps are fully integrated with each phone’s contacts, so you can call via Google Voice straight from address book.

The mobile app for Google Voice uses the regular PSTN connection to place a call to Google Voice, which then places a call out to the person you need to reach. Since these calls (and SMS messages) originate from your Google Voice, they display your Google Voice number for the recipients. The service needs a data connection but it isn’t necessary to have a Wi-Fi connection to place and receive calls. The wireless number you buy from the cell phone company becomes less relevant.

The app is so tightly enmeshed with Android OS and the address book and other apps, you hardly think that you’re using Google Voice. If Google bundles the Google Voice app with Android and sells it to makers of cheaper feature phones, it can start to insert itself between the consumers and wireless companies.

This “man in the middle” position is Google’s strength. The company has inserted itself between consumers and information via its search offering and profited handsomely from it. Why can’t it do the same with this voice offering? There is anecdotal evidence that some consumers might actually be happy paying for their mobile service by listening to advertisements.

Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 Latest App Plans For Marketplace!!

Microsoft has outlined further plans for its latest version of Windows Mobile application store on Tuesday. In a blog post, the company has confirmed that it will be opening up its Marketplace app store for submissions on the 27 July in countries including the UK, the US and Australia.

Aside from confirming when developers can submit apps to the yet to be released app store, Microsoft has also confirmed that the new service will be available to Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 devices by the end of the year after the initial 6.5 launch. The news means developers will have an opportunity to reach more than 30 million Windows Mobile devices possibly allowing it to leap frog the Apple iPhone App store.

"In terms of milestones, I’m pleased to report that Windows Marketplace is on schedule to open for submissions in 29 supported countries on July 27th", said Todd Brix, the senior director for Mobile Platform Services Product Management at Microsoft.

Brix also confirmed that the new version of Windows Mobile, version 6.5, will be available "in the fall" suggesting a late September early October launch date.

Microsoft is hoping the ability for developers to submit content ahead of the official launch will mean plenty of applications for people to download. Brix is already promising a "new wave of applications that will be ready for download when Windows Marketplace launches with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the fall".

The company has also said that it will be setting up a dedicated area within Marketplace called Business Center, that will house business applications.

Cherry, a new mobile operator that promised to “revolutionize the telecom world”. In application introduction ceremony The company’s CEO got up on stage, introduced himself, took out his Nokia smartphone, called some random guy in the audience and had him call him back on his phone afterwards. Projecting his mobile phone screen on a bigger screen for everyone to see, he demonstrated how he didn’t need to launch an application and just browsed his contact list to call the other person. Standard functionality, sure, but the cool part of it was the fact that the phone was lacking the presence of a SIM card, which is supposed to identify you as a subscriber of a telephony service.

Here’s how it works: Cherry - which is essentially an MVNO pre-installs software (so yes, in the demo there was actually an application running in the background) on smartphones which it will sell as a packaged product, starting with a Symbian version for Nokia E-Series phones and expanding to other platforms later. Once activated, Cherry lets you call your contacts either over Wi-Fi or the GSM network when you insert a SIM card. Take out the card, and you can only call over a wireless Internet connection.

The funky part? Cherry automatically switches you from one to the other. This process, called a handover, can seriously cut into your current calling and roaming costs when you’re a frequent traveler or on the road often, and it doesn’t even require you to change numbers. You could easily dial your office number from your home over Wi-Fi, leave the house and have the software automatically have Cherry switch you over to a carrier’s cellular network once you’re out of range. There’s no interruption of service during the handover, which means you won’t even notice - until you receive your bill, since it’s obviously cheaper to call over Wi-Fi than the GSM network.

iPhone 3Gs is capturing the marketing very fast although as it is still in debates due to missing features, customers expectations where quite high this time from iPhone 3Gs. Here is got the list of 7 major things missing iPhone 3Gs.

More Carrier Options: I think if Apple allowed more carriers to offer the iPhone, it would totally take over the market. I can't tell you how many people I've talked to that want the iPhone, but won't take the plunge because they either dislike AT&T, or just don't want to change providers.

Lower Upgrade Prices: And I quote directly from Apple's product page : "For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)." Now that's highway robbery.
Camera Flash: It's great that Apple is giving us a great new 3 megapixel camera with auto focus, auto macro, and auto white balance, but what about a flash for those super low light situations? I was hoping . . .
Push Email: The iPhone would be my all-in-one business and pleasure phone if I didn't have to obsessively have to check my inbox. Nuff said.
Ability to Run More Than One App at Once: It's a pain in my rear when I am knee deep in a sweet Tetris game and receive a text message. I then have to exit Tetris, and enter the messaging app. Is there a way to pause one app while you open another? Well, is there!?
Colors: Remember when the first iPod was just plain white, and then all of the sudden a rainbow of iPod Mini's, iPod Nano's and iPod Shuffles washed over us? Yeah, that would be awesome now too.
Flash support: With the majority of websites using flash embedded videos, and some of the funnest games out there being flash, it would make sense to have this added feature. I mean, if you want us to surf the web on this little gadget, not to mention that some websites are all Flash, let us do what you made this phone to do — play games, surf the web, and you know, make some calls here or there. iPhone 3G S Vs Rest !!

Many users are writing about iPhone 3G S performance and its features, in my last post you might observe that many reviews are against iPhone 3G S on top blogs but still it the most talkative device on blogs and forums now a days. Here i found an interesting comparison of iPhone 3Gs with the rest of the devices on one blog.

Andriod (G1 & G2)

Andriod was the first true competitor to the iPhone, and with more interest from cellphone makers and some promises of more Andriod Phones this year, Andriod is a growing threat to the iPhone.

The G1 never truly beat the iPhone to start off with, even though it came very close and is a fantastic phone for those of you attachted to T-Mobile. The iPhone 3GS continues the lead over Andriod’s army of devices, thought the mild changes don’t put it very far ahead.

iPhone OS 3.0 should do much more than the actual hardware of the iPhone 3GS. 3.0 will offer a lot of unique and compelling features that will bare over Andriod. Andriod still has some features that I would kill for on an iPhone (Push GMail, Physical Keyboard & Soft Keyboard, etc), but I think the iPhone pulls ahead of it, even with the still very apartent flaws in the iPhone 3GS.
RIM & Blackberry

Well, the Storm blew over and now one really cared, it wasn’t what RIM does best, but did try to give the iPhone a run for its money with Sure-Press. In the end, I think that RIM’s new generation of Blackberries poses a lot of threat against the iPhone, especially in the business market.

RIM and Microsoft already own the business market, but the iPhone has given good attempts to steal some of the market share from them. With exchange support, 3G networking, global search, push calender, push contacts, and push email, the iPhone offers enough to entice some of the busniess elite!

The business market has yet to taken by the iPhone, but the real war is in the genearl consumer market. Blackberries make great messaging phones and are more than business phones. The addition of the App World, better Media features, and better screens will push blackberries into the consumer realm and battle the iPhone, but it has a ways to go before it will truly challeng e the iPhone.

Windows Mobile

In truth, Apple murders Windows Mobile for Consumers, and gives it a good fight in the professional world. With the addition of more business oriented features, it will continue to push Microsoft back especially since Windows Mobile is fairly weak at the moment.

Mobile OS X is by far lap and bounds ahead of Windows Mobile, even thought Windows Mobile is more business oriented OS. If Microsoft doesn’t redo or make MAJOR changes to their OS, the preasure from both RIM and Apple could begin to take out Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile has yet to really compete with the iPhone.

Palm Pre and Web OS

The Pre is the first phone that really beat or at least matched the iPhone. Web OS seems really fast and its multitasking is something that the iPhone won’t have for a while (if ever!). Sprint is also better than AT&T, which makes the whole phone a little better.

With the additions of the iPhone 3GS, Apple definitely remains in battle with the Pre, but it doesn’t offer enough to knock it out. If anything, the lower price and features of the $99 iPhone 3G will make it a major threat to the other smartphones! Until Apple introduces some major changes like multi-tasking, switch to a better network (I really want them to go to Verizon), or something else game changing (I have faith that Apple could come up with something else that no one has thought of yet), the Pre is still on the level of the iPhone 3GS.

In Summary:

The iPhone 3GS retains all of the features of the older iPhones, which lets it pick up right where Apple left the iPhone 3G. This keeps it at the front of the pack and the changes that they’ve made have only helped it, but without any major game changing features, other smartphone makers aren’t too far behind. The lack of major upgrades also gives other companies time to catch up, which could lead to a smartphone that completely defeats the iPhone. For now though, the iPhone 3GS remains on top.
