Zara Wins Some Nights At The Round Table

200 words means SAC student Zara Chestnutt is going on an all-expenses-paid trip to the Sheep Breeders Round Table at Stratford on Avon which covers sheep breeding, from practical farming advice to the use of cutting edge genetics.

Above: Cross Texel sheep at SAC's Kirkton Farm

The open competition was organised by the Scottish Sheep Strategy and supported by Quality Meat Scotland. The sponsorship includes the winning delegate’s conference fee, accommodation and travel expenses up to the value of £200.

Zara is in her final year of study of an Agriculture Honours degree course at SAC Edinburgh. She is studying animal breeding and genetics and will be undertaking a research project supervised by Dr Lutz Bunger. The project, which will form the basis of her Honours dissertation, will be examining aspects of body size and growth in Texel sheep and their relationship to meat yield.

In her successful 200-word application she said: “Attending the Sheep Breeders Round Table would be an excellent opportunity to be inspired by leading researchers and discuss with breeders the relevance of my project.”

Zara, whose father has been a Texel breeder in Northern Ireland for over 30 years, has always had an interest in sheep. As a student she spent a year with Finlay and Neil McGowan at Incheoch, Blairgowrie, and admits she learned a lot.

For QMS, Livestock Development Manager, Kathy Peebles, said: “We felt that attending the Sheep Breeders Round Table would let Zara meet with farmers and researchers who are at the forefront of developing and putting into practice the latest in sheep breeding technology. QMS already funds some of the projects that Dr Bunger is leading on so it is a nice link back to the industry."

Counter Critics And Cut Costs - SAC Farmers Meetings On Climate Change

Scottish farmers facing industry criticism over climate change can learn how to answer their critics by attending meetings being organised by SAC in the coming weeks. Calls to cut meat consumption can be countered if they adopt practical ways of reducing farming’s carbon footprint while maintaining sustainable livestock production.

Above: Farming For A Better Climate

Climate change has been identified as the biggest challenge facing society and Scotland has ambitious targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gasses. They will challenge all sectors of society and agriculture is no exception. During November, a series of Scottish Government-funded meetings, across Scotland, will highlight areas where farming activities can contribute.

On SAC’s own Crichton Dairy Unit at Dumfries, the wash water is warmed through the milk cooler, needing just a little off-peak electricity to bring it to working temperature. This cuts energy demand and manager Hugh McClymont’s bills. Through better use of slurry and dung Hugh also aims to cut the amount of bagged nitrogen fertiliser he buys. It can save him £250 per hectare as well as helping the environment by reducing demand for energy intensive oil-based fertiliser. Now SAC is investigating the feasibility of a biogas plant on the farm.

Scotland’s peaty soils store half the UK’s soil carbon. A previous series of meetings, for consultants, highlighted farming techniques that can keep that carbon locked up and prevent emission to the atmosphere. The development of carbon accounting is receiving more attention with supermarkets labelling products with their carbon balances and asking suppliers for the data. It is set to become a really important area.

These issues and others will be discussed at the farmer events, along with tips on how to secure cost savings and generate profit. Climate change measures are seen as offering real scope for farmers to improve efficiency and make their contribution to environmental change.

The evening meetings (7.00 - 9.00) start in Dumfries (Crichton Royal Farm) on 3 November and continue to Tweed Horizons Conference Centre, St Boswells (4 November), Cartland Bridge Hotel, Lanark (16 November), the Dewar Centre, Perth (17 November), the Barn and Bushel at Thainstone (23 November), and finish in Inverness (Thistle Hotel) on 24 November.

Further details are available from the Farming For A Better Climate website, Elaine Booth (01224 711079, 07715 366352) or Carole Christian (0131 535 3033, 07826 513333).

SAC Strengthens Links With University Of Malawi

The links between SAC and the University of Malawi were further strengthened by a visit to Bunda College by three SAC staff. They were there as part of the Scottish Government-funded project to improve smallholder dairying in the country.

The three Dumfries-based SAC staff making the trip were Helen Carty of the Veterinary Investigation Service with Mizeck Chagunda and Dave Roberts from the Dairy Research Centre at Crichton. Their discussions covered dairy cow fertility, record keeping and forage production.

One key part of the project they discussed with Professor Leonard Kamwania, Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Malawi is capacity building with four research studentships. There are 3 MSc projects funded by the project and one PhD studentship associated with the project but funded from other sources. Meanwhile, Jenny Gibbons, a Research Technician with SAC's Sustainable Livestock Systems group who has just finished her PhD, is going out to Bunda next week for 3 months sabbatical working with staff on this project.

Patna To Papua New Guinea

Ayr-based SAC Farm Business Services consultant Kara Craig has decided to miss our autumn wind and rain and head south to Papua New Guinea. She has joined other young professionals from around the world on a Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth “Next Generation” mission to the southern hemisphere.

Above: Kara Craig

After assembling in Brisbane they flew to the PNG capital Port Moresby to be briefed about the PNG way of life, particularly its complex customs regarding land ownership and tenure. That will be important as the group will work with farmers operating on traditionally-owned land in the coming days. Their busy itinerary includes a flight to the highlands to learn about the coffee industry and a visit to PNG Institute of Medical Research and their malaria, TB and Aids research facilities. Malaria has a significant impact on life in that part of Indonesia.

The main aim of the trip is to provide technical assistance to the small-scale village farmers in the region. They grow crops such as sweet potato and, in an area where the pig is revered, will value local research on pig fodder provision. There will also be a chance to study commercial sugar and oil palm production as well as the local beef industry.

One highlight will be their trip to the Morobe Show to help farmers get stock ready and providing assistance on the day itself. That will include stewarding, manning a display explaining the work of the RASC and advising people on the preparedness of exhibits for competition. Apparently they are likely to find horses in the marshalling area with barbed wire bits, saddle sores from poorly fitting gear. Animal welfare is serious issue.

It is not all work however and the programme leaves time for a two-day boat trip with Morobe Show President Mike Quinn and his wife Karen aboard their own cruise boat.

We look forward to reading more about this trip when Kara returns.

Plinth And Polar Bears

What’s the connection between SAC, climate change and a plinth in Trafalgar Square?

Above: Rose Hanley-Nickolls as a polar bear onTrafalgar Square plinth

The answer - a polar bear, or, more accurately 2nd year SAC PhD student Rose Hanley-Nickolls dressed as one. She had won her hour on the empty plinth in a project devised by artist Anthony Gormley. In the lead up to the Copenhagen summit she chose to highlight climate change.

Over 340,000 people had entered the draw for only 2,400 spots. Rose was on top from 8-9.00 pm on an October Monday evening, having walked through London in her polar bear outfit. She even met Anthony Gormley. He was there to cheer on his godson’s wife who had the slot before Rose.

“Being on the plinth was very surreal” said Rose. “It’s a lot higher up than you realise! The lights were really bright, so I couldn’t really see people below it. Because it was so high above the traffic I couldn’t hear what the friends supporting me were yelling - but perhaps that was for the best!”

Rose spent a lot of her time at the top on the phone to her mum, giving her energy saving tips. Then, when a Russian spectator bought everyone ice creams, they tried to throw one to her. Unfortunately Rose is not the best of catchers so one landed over the other side of the plinth on the heads of a couple kissing below. Further evidence that polar bears are losing their ice?

Focus On Animal Health At Castle Douglas Event

SAC Vice Chairman Donald Biggar will use the lessons learned from his own bitter experience in dealing with cattle disease to help others when he hosts a farmers open day at Corbieton Farm, Haugh of Urr on Tuesday, 10th November. Together with leading SAC production and health experts as well as local vets they will address issues surrounding BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhoea) and Johne's Disease.

Above: Suckler production diseases will be discussed

SAC economists calculate that losses from BVD in a 100-cow beef herd can exceed £45,000 over a ten-year period. BVD can be eradicated and the event, near Castle Douglas, will show how to achieve this. It is part-funded by the Scottish Government as part of its Animal Welfare Advisory Activity.

As recent sales of BVD-free stock have shown there is increasing industry awareness of the benefits of disease-free stock in both production efficiency and market returns. SAC has a proud record of work in this field by experts recognised worldwide. Donald Biggar will detail his health policy at Corbieton and the benefits seen on his unit.

Also on the agenda are sessions looking at the effect and cost of disease outbreaks, the means of disease transmission, the importance of testing, testing protocols and the benefits of a disease-free herd. The messages will concentrate on sound practical advice that can be adopted on any stock farm.

The event will start at Corbieton (DG7 3JJ) at 10.30 am where visitors can examine the beef unit on the farm. There will be lunch at the Urr Valley Hotel in nearby Castle Douglas followed by talks from leading industry figures and a question and answer session.

Scotland Food and Drink will be holding a conference organised by SAC in association with the Scottish Government to raise the overall awareness of Protected Food Names among Scottish food producers and producer groups.

The aim of this conference is to stimulate discussion on the potential uptake of Protected Food Names (PFN) such as Protected Geographical Indicator (PG1), Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG).

At present there are fewer of these PFNs in Scotland and the UK than in other European countries, and the conference will focus on the options available to prodcuers, the benefits of participation and the process requirements.

Programme

A number of producers from Scotland, the rest of the UK and from Europe will be in attendance to discuss their own experiences, collaboration and market advantages of uptake of the schemes.

There will also be presentations from Scottish Government and from various European organisations on the value of the scheme, the process and requirements for producers.

Further Information

The conference is a free event, and a buffet lunch will be provided. Please contact Patrick Hughes if you are interested in attending.
