I know, it's been like forever. Just jumped on to let you all know (yeah, both of you)that my buddy, hobo artist d. Price's new e-book, My Tiny House, is now available from his website. Not only has he ventured into world online publishing, but he now accepts PayPal...for some things. Spread the word. Oh, and it's not delivered automatically, but emailed to you directly from the hobo.

I was actually able to encourage (i.e. hound) one to come out to do a little public drawing. It was hard not to be distracted by the chess club that had taken over the coffee shop.

I drew the lid sort of blind contour style, at least the outline, then filled in some of the details a bit. Quick and fun with a red micron (I've only ever drawn in black - I'm so uptight).

olive oil

olive oil, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I haven't drawn much in a while - laid off, ruptured achilles, new job, etc. Well, no more excuses. In trying to rally others to draw and explaining how little time it takes (just 5 minutes a day) I realized what a hypocrite I was being. So here's something new.

We took my mom out for dinner for her birthday. I liked the shiny green olive oil bottle, especially the crazy distorted view from the top. I tried to exaggerate that a bit, but it didn't really work out that great. I still like how the drawing turned out though.

DJ Hero

DJ Hero, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I was finally inspired to draw, its been a while. Partly because that's how I like, partly because that's how the picture was cropped, and partly because that was about the time my daughter stumbled out of the tree fort. Not to worry. She's young and limber and the place where she fell was only a few feet off the ground.

lookup

lookup, originally uploaded by Rymann.

It has been a WHILE! I found a nice board with a routed contour around the perimeter, painted it black, and mounted one of my excavator drawings to the front. I rubber stamped the numbers and added a clock kit from Michaels. Voila.

This is part of a lot which will include four framed and matted prints (dozer, loader, water truck, and roller) I'm donating to my son's school auction.

UPDATE: The school auction was last night. My clock and 4 framed prints sold for full price. Woohoo! I was a little concerned because they started bidding at about 30%.

something different...

Not sure what I was going for here. I started out with a simple contour drawing, but that wasn't enough, so I did a bit of hatching. I still wasn't feelin' it. Probably one of the most expensive pieces of furniture we've invested in. Sad, I know. I collect books faster than I can read them. I kind of took over the lower 6 shelves with the more relevant books. Then I filled the upper 2 shelves on the left with MY art stuff. Then my wife walked in and wonder aloud whether there would be any room left for HER art supplies. Being as that was the major reason we had purchased the bookshelf.

Well, let's just say I stopped what I was doing, consolidated what I could of the supplies, and got out of the way.

I guess I thought the shelves were going to be bigger.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!!

My son collaged this turkey during his after school art class taught by my lovely wife (BlueLucyStudios.com). His legs were actually longer, but it wouldn't fit in the scanner.

fish

fish, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I just realized I'd never drawn a fish. I've been following his drawings on flickr for quite a while now and he has finally started a blog. So go check him out.

Also, unless you've been hiding under a rock lately, you've probably heard about Gabi's new project Urban Sketchers. Trying to describe the talented people contributing would not do it justice. If you haven't already, go check it out. That is where I discovered the work of Tin Salamunic. His work is incredible. His drawings appear simple and consist mostly of contour drawings with with maybe one or two colors. Amazing stuff really.

Lastly, Dan Price is currently in the midst of a trike tour around the Hawaiian islands. Check out his progress as he documents his travels at moonlightchroniclesblog.blogspot.com. See his photos at flickr or get updates on facebook. Its right next to a job site I worked on two years ago. I recently started working on a site next door, so I finally took the opportunity to draw it.

It is a huge tank of some sort. Two cannon looking things are mounted on top. They remind me of those telescope things at the beach you pay a quarter to use. The staircase winds around probably half the perimeter down to a landing.

Here are a couple other recent sketches.

SE Portland

SE Portland, originally uploaded by Rymann.

Here's another computer-colored drawing of a building in SE Portland, drawn with d.Price.

Become a fan of the Moonlight Chronicles on facebook...everybody's doing it.

Building...downtown Portland

Building...downtown Portland, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I recently did some drawing with d.Price in downtown Portland. Sitting on the cold hard concrete sidewalk I sketched this fairly ornate building. I colored in on the computer. You can see the original drawing below.

trailer in color

trailer in color, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I've always felt I have so much to learn in terms of values using just black ink and cross-hatching I rarely venture out and use color. This trailer didn't have much in the way of color so I thought it would be an easier place to start. I've been keeping up with d.Price's computer colored Moonlight Chronicle pages and thought it would be fun to try.

Here's the original trailer.
