Following on the success of our first Indie Rock Drums ReFill, Volume 2 delves even deeper into the many subgenres (and sounds) of indie rock. To produce our latest Loop Loft Artist Series ReFill for Reason 6, we enlisted the talent of acclaimed guitarist, Doug Wamble (Wynton Marsalis, Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Branford Marsalis). Recorded over the course of several days in NYC on Wamble’s signature Amistar resonator guitar, this collection of tracks and samples covers a vast range of styles, from traditional Delta blues, to front porch folk, to singer-songwriter strumming, to dirty and distorted rock. What would it sound like if legendary funk drummer, Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown) joined a legendary fusion band like Weather Report, and they only performed in dance clubs where the tempo was regulated to 128 bpm? Well, we’re not sure if such a bizarre/awesome union like this would ever occur, but if it did, the drums would probably sound a lot like our latest multitrack release, “Funk Meets Fusion”.

Just like the name implies, the Thick and Meaty Multitrack Sessions are loaded with drums that give you plenty to chew on… and more.  Using one of our beloved birch studio kits, we slapped on some extra-punchy Remo Pinstripe heads and pulled out our ultra-aggressive brass snare drum, all to give you a sound that is fat, juicy and totally in your face.  Along with all of the individual drum tracks, we also captured the room sound on a separate channel, putting an even bigger (and natural) sound at your disposal.  Just adjust the faders and mix to taste!

I had the honor and privilege to produce slide guitar loops with the great, Doug Wamble. If you don’t know who Doug is, odds are you’ve probably already heard is incredible guitar playing. He’s played with a huge range of people including Wynton Marsalis, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Nora Jones, Brandford Marsalis and even Courtney Fucking Love. That’s also his guitar playing that you hear on all of the awesome Ken Burns documentaries.

So, enough gushing about Doug… let’s just get to it and check out his magnificent slide guitar playing:

As things progressed and this blog transitioned into a full-blown production company, I shifted to the more traditional loop formats (stereo WAV, AIFF and REX2 files) in order to be compatible with all major DAWs and provide downloads of thousands of loops digital without being more than several gigabytes in size. As you probably know, the size of multitrack sessions can add up fast and storing all of that data (let alone, the bandwidth of transferring it to customers) was going to be crazy, crazy expensive.

Well, with the price of online storage dropping dramatically, I’m happy to say that I’m back to my roots…. recording multitrack drum sessions for The Loop Loft. To make these sessions compatible with all major DAWs we decided to provide the stems as wav files, rather than as Logic session files. So now you can fire up Ableton, Cubase, Garageband, Reaper or whatever your favorite DAW is and drag and drop the multitracks in. I’m pretty excited about the flexibility this will give people, allowing them to control every single detail of my drum tracks, from the panning of a tom to the amount of compression on the kick drum.
