I’ve decided to start blogging again (for the third time now…) but I’ve recently been coming across some interesting stuff that I’d like to share without having tell a million different people, pasting different links, well you get the point. Being in software engineering, I’ve recently come across a number of good site, and these ones I’ve been trolling lately. Although reddit’s been around for a while and my classmates frequent it quite often, I’ve just never found the appeal, until now. I was linked to this plee by a friend about a programmer in industry who wants out, and was looking for some insight. I found it endearing that a bunch of “randoms” were able to gave their two cent’s, and gave him a push in the right direction, as well as humorous anecdotes on things they’ve come across. Here are a couple that I had a good laugh at:

smashthebirdy:
“… I want to do something different. I’m also at the highest position an engineer can be in my current gig, so no upward mobility. I’m already at level 80.”

Although the situation isn’t funny, I had a good chuckle at the reference to gaming.

Then there was this:

umilmi81:
The worst case I saw was that some application was putting a space ” ” in front of the primary key value. It wasn’t happening every time, just some of the time. Well rather than track down and fix the app that was doing this, they decided to just make sure to include a wildcard search in every single fucking query against the database.

select * from tableX where MyPK like ‘%’ + @SearchPK

Classy.

elbekko:
Congratulations, you’ve just made a thousand DBAs cry.

Having to do query optimization in my studies in database systems I was in shock that somebody would actually deem that an acceptable solution. I I’m sure my professor would have a fit if we ever tried to do anything like that. I then soon learned that there was a site is devoted to coding WTF’s and it’s called The Daily WTF. I had a good laugh and spent a good amount of time on there, it’s like the FailBlog for programmers, and if you don’t know what that is you need to get caught up.

Which brings me to why I even started this post in the first place, and the word of the week. I was trolling on Facebook again and I cam across a mock motivational poster which was in a group called “Do you even have a life?”.. “Im a gamer, I have plenty of lives!” I found it pretty funny.

Sometimes I wonder how many of these photos are staged, although this one’s pretty obvious. It kind of make me want to shoot a series. After all I do have a camera.

It might just be a plugin that’s doing some funky jazz up in my server but that’s still under investigation.

I recently, and when I say recently I mean a month or two back decided I’d try out Google’s Analytics. However after over a month I never saw any results. Since it wasn’t a priority issue, I neglected it until now. After searching the help docs, videos and forums I found that I wasn’t the only one with this issue. And it wasn’t entirely due to my incompetence. On the instruction page where it tells you where to put the script on the pages you want to track they tell you to place the code directly above the </body> tag.

You are instructed to place the code above the </body> tag.

I thought this was an odd practice but I figured Google knew what they were doing, so I did as instructed. However after watching, and re-watching very closely their here, that it is in fact supposed to be placed directly above the tag.

I change this today and notified them on the forums because it was a complete and utter farce to try and send them and email directly about the issue. So hopefully this will reduce the amount of questions they have on this issue, and in 24hs I might actually be able to see may first report after a little over a month of waiting.

UPDATE: Apparently Google’s implementation of the script on to the page should work. They do it to prevent page lag, due to the script contacting Google’s servers. Allowing the page to load, and if there are any errors it doesn’t disrupt and can die in the background.

If your anyone like me and download quite a bit you probably have an external drive. I Use mine for storing videos, music, and bulkier files that I just don’t need on my laptop when I’m on the go. But when I’m at home and I feel like watching a movie before I hit the sack or even just to relax I normally use the VLC player. Works with pretty much every file I’ve come to encounter and you can stream stuff to other clients. However the draw back of using VLC is the remote. You have to set up your playlist prior, and when the movie ends you wind up back at your desktop. Which kind of annoying when you’re trying to sleep at this point and the room lights up again…

I like front row, it allows you to play your iTunes library, browse trailers of upcoming movies, music videos, and television shows; and with it’s HTPC-esk navigation system it’s easy to do with the Apple Remote (and even sleep your computer when your done).
So I’ve decided to through to together this little walkthrough for the not-so-tech-savy. It’s easy, and prevents you from having to keep those files on your main hard disk. I’d rate this a 3/10 on the difficulty scale.

First things first. Open up terminal.

Open Terminal

From there you should see a window much like this one.

Screenshot of Terminal

You should already be in your home directory, but type:

$ cd ~
$ pwd

This will change directories (cd) to your home folder (~), and print the working directory (pwd). Then you want to change directories to your Movies folder, where Front Row looks for videos by default.

$ cd Movies
$ pwd

Now from here you’re going to need to open up Finder and find the directory of the media files you want to add. Mine is Storage HD/_V. Now that that you know the path go back to Terminal and and type this:

Where are you hiding your media files?

$ cd /Volumes/Your\ Drive\ Name/Media\ Folder/

NOTE: Notice there are two types of slashes. ‘/’ is a directory structure where ‘\’ is required only if the directory or drive name has a space. Otherwise it would look something like this:

$ cd /Volumes/YourDriveName/MediaFolder/

Once you’re able to get to that directory press the up arrow and copy everything after the $ cd.

now go back to your Movies directory with:

$ cd ~/Movies/

Now we’re going to create a link to the directory with your media inside of your Movies folder so that Front Row can see it. Remember that directory you just copied? Past it in like so.

$ ln -s [Paste Directory Here] [Movies Directory Here]

add a space and add the Movies directory with the new folder name. This would be mine:

$ ln -s /Volumes/Storage\ HD/_V ~/Movies/Storage\ HD\ Movies

Hit enter and presto, you should now be able to see your external drive’s data in Front Row.

Presto! New folder for Front row

I saw this earlier today, and what can I say I was “put in my place” so to speak. I had never actually sat and thought about this but, now I realize the Sun really isn’t that big after all…

I’m all about the world of the unknown and pretty open minded to theories of the universe. But when I saw this it kinda put things into perspective. Most people can understand vastness of the universe and that it’s and endless, continually expanding mass. But do they really? I was one of those people. Sure you see pictures of the solar system, Milky Way galaxy, and pictures of far off stars and nebulae. But they are rarely, if ever, compared to us, and the planet Earth. Needless to say after seeing this, saying that we are specs is a mere understatement, IMO. I don’t know I’m just finding it hard put it into words, but check it out (I also really like the music, so if you know it, hit me up):

Finally have my MBP up and running via Boot Camp with the latest build of Windows 7 (7048), it all seems pretty smooth. Although the touch pad is pretty crappy in Windows, doesn’t recognize taps as nicely as Mac OS X does, but I have a USB mouse to deal with that. Although set to expire in August of this year (rumour has it) I plan to see what I can and can’t do. Although Firefox does act up on it. It will lock up the entire system and I’m forced to do a hard reboot (hold power button down). Sadly I also realized that I formated my external HDD as a HFS+ and thus have no access to it *sigh*. So I’ll have to back up format it and then try again. 32GB is SOOO not enough for a Windows 7 partion. After a clean install I’m already sitting at just over 14GB! However I knew it would be big, just not that big. I’m also still trying ti figure out why Wordpress refuses to let me use “SEO happy” permalinks in my URL, and it’s quite frustrating… Gonna have to do some more forum trolling.

EDIT: Feeds and Permalinks now working (b^.^)b
