One of the phrases used in current iPhone advertisements is 'There is an App for that', but I somehow I don't think there is an App for this.

Kluun at Lowlands 2009

During the Lowlands festival in Biddinghuizen in August of this year, Anky and I went to see the NightWriters. The NightWriters is an effort of a popular Dutch writer, called Ray Kluun, to make reading literature less elitist. He lets all different kind of Dutch and Belgium writers read short stories and poems, intermingled with performances of his favorite bands.
During his show at the Lowlands Festival, he went on stage to sing Bruce Springsteen's 'The River', but instead of the original lyrics, he had translated the song into a dialect spoken by the people living in the Dutch province of Northern-Brabant. The result was quite hilarious, and luckily Kluun was accompanied by two professional guitarists to hide the fact that he can't sing at all. I decided to snap a picture of him with my iPhone and post it on Twitter.
When I was reading Kluun's blog, I discovered he used my photo in one of his blog posts! Thanks Kluun for giving me some more exposure ;)

Website Mess

This website will be a bit messy for the coming weeks as I'm using it as a testbed for upgrading to Drupal 6. I will first try to get all functionality in and then make a new template to update the site layout. I'm already excited about the new options in D6, woohoo!

How the music industry is killing itself

This morning, I opened my mailbox and there was a rather interesting e-mail in there. Apparently you are not allowed to tell anyone on the internet that you like listening to Porcupine Tree. Too bad these record labels don't see the power of internet marketing. Instead they hit on their own customers that just legally bought ten records of the aforementioned artist. I wonder if the band itself knows about these actions?

The mail:

Another year end, 2008 in retrospect

This is the second article in the series covering fun facts and statistics of 2008. The article of 2007 can be found here.

Friends and Family

Just at the end of the year my brother Erik got a new job at Men_at_Work. At this new job he has the possibility to become a shop manager.
Anky is still doing great at school, well underway in her second year. She was born to be a teacher.
Both Bart and Mischa are in a relationship. I wish them the very best for a long time to come.

Work

The year started as good as 2007 had ended, and work kept flooding in. Until the economy halted in October. The portfolio at Albertz Hendrix is varied enough to prevent going bankrupt, but things are a lot slower at the end of the year. But, against all odds, it seems that we are going to be very busy in 2009.

Spare Time

The Thirdwing choir took a lot more of my spare time this year as I was asked to join the organization committee.
My websites did well. I relaunched Starbase 49 in a drupal form. Made a new site for Phicture, and updated this site.

Great Music

This is the first full year of Last.fm tracking, so I can grab some statistics from their database.
The new discoveries of this year were Elbow and Sigur Rós. They both played at Lowlands, but I skipped Sigur Rós and didn't know about Elbow. I knew I shouldn't have done that after seeing the television recordings afterwards.

5 Most played artists:

Voicst (148 plays)

Sigur Rós (106 plays)

Pink Floyd (106 plays)

Elbow (103 plays)

Tool (99 plays)

5 Most played albums:

Voicst - A Tale of Two Devils (110 tracks played)

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (65 tracks played)

Sigur Rós - Takk... (57 tracks played)

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (52 tracks played)

Editors - An End Has a Start (45 tracks played)

New stuff

2008 was the year I went Mac, therefore most big purchases this year were from Apple.

Apple iMac 20inch

Various accessories (Elgato EyeTV, WD MyBook Studio)

iPhone 16GB

MacBook Unibody 2.4Ghz

Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC FISHEYE HSM

Starbase49.com v7.1

The second attempt to build a new version of the Starbase 49 website. This time I tried to use Drupal for my oldest site. All forum posts were transferred successfully from YaBB to Drupal.
In april of 2009, I decided to branch off the Starbase 49 website into two separate sites. Starbase 49 went on as a dedicated simm site, where Acacia Fleet was created to host the forums and other supporting services. The Acacia Fleet website uses the drupal database created for SB49 v7.1.

Holidays are Over

With a trip to Phantasialand in Germany last weekend, Holiday fun ended for me.

The fun started in June with a trip to Walibi World. I uploaded some photos to this Flickr set.

From July 13th - July 29th we went on a trip to Lake Garda in Italy. I'm still working on the 260 pictures I took there. Expect them to appear here soon.

On August 14th it was time for a second trip to Biddinghuizen, this time for the Lowlands festival. Edition 2008 was sold out in record time with a line-up that lacked real headliners, but offered a diverse collection of music, comedy, small-art, literature and film. Unexpected good weather made sure the weekend was well spent. Flickr stream here.

Pinkpop 2008 Flickr Stream

I'm having some problems adding new photos to this website. I opened a Flickr account and am trying to integrate that into Drupal. Until that time new photos will only appear on the 'other side'. Pictures taken during last month's Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf can be found in this Flickr Set.

How I use iPhoto and Aperture

In another attempt to add some interesting content to my blog, I'll post a series of articles about my steps in the world of Mac. I bought an iMac in March and I have been using it to manage my photos, my music, watch television on it and even for rendering 3D images for my boss. I thought it would be nice to share my findings as a switcher for others to learn. Today: how I use the consumer (iPhoto) and professional (Aperture) photo managing software from Apple.

My iMac came with iLife '08 preinstalled, which means I'm using iPhoto '08. The installed version of Aperture is version 2.

My photos are stored on a NAS sorted in folders by year, and then by date. Because I'm not only using a Mac (I also use a VAIO notebook) and because there are other family members with PC's, this folder structure has to be maintained.

Because iPhoto is fast and lightweight I decided to use iPhoto as the primary library which contains all of the family photos. I don't do post processing on 90 percent of the photos taken because most of the photos consist of snapshots.

New and Improved

Yesterday, I launched my new and improved website. Content is the same, design, layout and features are new. Since moving over to Drupal last year, I never really adapted the site design to incorporate all the new features. I added a second sidebar to the design to show my tweets and music I listen to (thanks Twitter and Last.FM).

This post is also a test for the pingback module by Leon. A screencast on how to use this module can be found at Mastering Drupal.

The second phase of switching this site over to Drupal involved a visual redesign. I added a lot of functionality to this site since switching from Joomla, and the old lay-out was not designed for this. More space was reserved in the new lay-out.

iMac versus Dell computer

During the presentation of the new generation of iMacs in August of last year, Steve Jobs showed a slide with on the left the new iMac, and on the right a Dell workstation. The iMac looked nice and clean with only a power cable and the mouse/keyboard cable connected. A spaghetti of cables was covering the image of the Dell.

Today I came across the image attached to this post, that shows exactly the downside of a clean desk. Let's hope the iSight of my iMac doesn't stop working.

Festival and Concert Update

The Lowlands team just announced that the first 12,500 tickets for the festival have been sold. This is a great start for them, knowing only a handful of the acts that will perform this year.

Lowlands is not the only festival with good sales figures. The weekend-tickets for Pinkpop 2008 were sold out in an all-time record. Within 4 days all 40,000 tickets were gone. Seems like booking Metallica, Rage Against the Machine and Foo Fighters was a good thing.

In other related music news, I can tell you that Editor's concert in the Heineken Music Hall on March 12th was awesome. I definitely thought they performed better than on their gig on last year's Lowlands. Even the two support acts were interesting enough to listen to. Tip of this post: driving through a storm with wind speeds up to 90kmph is _not_ recommended.

Looking back at 2007

The end of the year draws nearer and I thought I would join the thousands of people all over the world summing up the great and not so great things that happened to them in the last year. I'm planning on doing this yearly from now on, giving me something to look back at when I retire somewhere in 2047.

Friends and Family

The last ones of my close friends have left their educational years behind this year. Mischa graduated the Technical University of Eindhoven and is now a master in Real Estate Management and Development.
No shocking developments in my family this year, only good things. Anky's brother and sister-in-law got their first child in August. His name is Quinn.
My mother and her twin sister crossed over to the 50+ side of life and my parents celebrated 30 years of marriage in november.
Last year I celebrated my 5th year of loving Anky. Anky on her turn celebrated starting at the 'PABO', the dutch educational institution for becoming a teacher in elementary school. She's doing a great job and we're all very proud of her.

Work

The first full year of working at AzHx is a fact. After a year that saw the transition from student life to corporate life, 2007 was a year of stability. And not only stability for me personally, but also for the company I work for. Work is flowing in fast and the dip in the construction world seems far away now. I'm no longer the new employee either: four people got hired since I started at AzHx.

Spare Time

At the start of the year, I was asked to join the Thirdwing Choir. Anyone who has ever heard me singing would immediately look up at the heavens and ask the powers above why humanity is to be tortured like this. But no worries, I wasn't asked to join to sing. The choir is accompanied by some musicians, and there was an opening for a guitarist.
This year I discovered Drupal. Over the course of a few months I reworked all Joomla sites to this other CMS. New sites: nszl.nl, vastgoedontwikkeling.tk and JufAnky.com

Great Music

Editors - An End Has a Start - This album has become one of my all-time favorites.

Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace - Dave Grohl and his men deliver again. Solid FF work.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - Started listening to them in anticipation of their Lowlands gig. Hasn't left my iPod since.

Voicst - Tale of Two Devils - Just in time to make it to this list. Great second album of this dutch trio.

New stuff

A list of the bigger new things I bought this year (in random order):

Ibanez Talman Acoustic Steel-string Guitar

PRS SE Singlecut guitar

iPod Touch 16GB

Canon EF 17-40 F4.0 L lense

Engl 2x12" speaker cabinet

Posting from the iPod touch

I'm posting this message from my spanking new iPod touch. Typing on the touch keyboard is a little slower then on a regular keyboard, but way faster than on any handheld device I ever owned. The glass screen seems very scratch restistant, in contrary with the back of the iPod. The back is made of the same shiny metal used on the other iPod models and is known for scratching even when just glimpsing at it. And now back to some handheld youtubing.

Hey, that's my work!

A few months ago I made a lot of 3D renderings as promotion material for a building project in Beegden, the Netherlands. This is one of the best parts of my job at Albertz Hendrix Architects, and it gets even better when you find your work in public. This my work is featured on the project's website.

From the Tool website:

"Tool has CANCELED Wednesday's appearance at the FREQUENCY FESTIVAL IN SALZBURG, AUSTRIA due to illness. Maynard has contracted a really bad throat infection which he has been fighting for the past couple of days, but, unfortunately, it has now reached the point where the band has to cancel."

Noooooooooooooooo! Please get well soon MJK before Sunday, I am really looking forward to another Tool show!

Update: They didn't cancel for Lowlands and played a great set. Didn't notice any problems with his voice.

Lowlands 2007, Counting Down to Color

7 nights to go before we travel north again for our yearly trip to the Lowlands festival. The site http://lowlands.has.it posted a photo report of the construction of the festival site. One thing I noticed was the amount of color used this year. Need to pee?
