Just an ordinary New Year's Eve for a family when a deadly flu breaks out. It begins with just one man but within a few weeks the flu has taken out nearly half the world's population. Leaving those left behind reeling not only with the death of those they loved, but also a whole new changed world.

The world changes in more ways than just the devastation of death, but soon those alive begin to realize they have other powers of the supernatural kind and have to learn to deal with the. Some are good and with the good come the bad. Evil supernaturals that kill for pleasure. With them are also those that have no special abilities, but also kill for pleasure.

Finding the good isn't easy.

The story follows the lives of several different groups of friends and families and what they do to survive in this new world.

This story is like nothing you've ever read from Nora Roberts before, so if you are looking for a love story, this book isn't for you. Although there is a recurring couple in the book, the story more revolves around the description of the new world. This book is much more like a

dystopian/magic story than anything else. It is well written and it kept me interested to the point that I read it through the night three nights in a row and stayed up way too late. Even with said there are those who won't like this book because it isn't what they would expect from the author and not their type of story.

Descriptions:

A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

New Alpha Gavin is looking for a mate, but hasn't found anyone within the pack, so he looks to other packs. When Alicia comes to him, Gavin is immediately intrigued by her and knows she's for him, but there is problems within his pack that puts everyone in danger.

Pretty good mystery story leaves you trying to figure out who the bad guys are. I wonder if the story could have been reworked without using the shifter storyline because aside from adding the pack mentality it doesn't really play out much in the story. Otherwise well written and the story kept my interest until the end.

Description:

One look will change their lives forever.

Lingerie designer Alicia Clarkson just had to open her stupid mouth. Now thanks to trying to defend a fellow pack mate, Alicia’s been blindfolded, tied up, and carted off to the new alpha of the Oregon pack—Gavin MacKellen.

On spring break just before graduation, werewolf shifter Jane does something completely out of character for an Alpha’s daughter. She has a one night stand with a stranger. The consequences of the one night changes all her plans to move away from the pack and live the rest of her life in the human world.

Heading home with her tail between her legs turns out to be a lot worse than she thought.

Ever since his one night stand months earlier Alpha werewolf Reese has had his hands full with his pack and issues with the neighboring Alpha. Even so he can’t stop thinking about his night with one she-wolf.

It isn’t the most opportune time when the two meet again. Will these two get their happy ever after.

This is a very quick Howls series romance that I read in one foggy Saturday afternoon. Still there was a lot packed into a short novel. Celia Kyle has become one of my favorite authors. Her heroines are always a little sassy and the hero are tough and sexy. I couple of times we saw Jane’s own alpha come out and play, but I would have liked to have seen a her enact a little female alpha justice toward the end, but all and all it was a good quick read.

Description:

She’s pregnant and he’s determined to have her under his roof and in his bed...no matter the cost!

Reese can’t get the delectable she-wolf Jane Coleman out of his mind. They shared one passionate night on a Ft. Lauderdale beach and she disappeared by morning. He should forget her, but his wolf won’t let him dismiss the memories of her silken skin, lush curves, and seductive smile.

Even as he fights to keep his lands out of the hands of a rival pack, he can’t suppress his constant craving for the female werewolf. The last place he expects to find the alluring stranger is at the side of his sworn enemy—her father.

He should crush her father and walk away, but one sniff changes Reese’s plans. Jane is pregnant with his pup and he will have them both!

This book is part of the Howls Romance line. Classic romance with a furry twist...

Being in the fashion industry is a tough business, but when she wants to become a trend setter, Natale Durante may have taken on more than she thought she was getting into. After receiving threatening letters her father hires a security firm to keep her safe, but one look at Salvatore Orsino and Natale is sure she isn’t going to be safe at all and not because the big gorgeous man can’t keep her safe. The question is is her heart safe?

The bear in Salvatore know right away that Natale is his, but can he keep her alive to claim her?

So far the many authors that have contributed to the Howls romance series has not disappointed yet and this book is no exception. This book contains hot wild love scenes, a little bit of mystery, danger and intrigue and one (or three) growly bears. Plus I love the fresh face on the cover of this book. He perfect for the part of Salvatore.

Description:

The head of Orsino Security was hired to protect her for a week. Instead, his bear wants to claim her forever.

It takes one look for bear shifter Salvatore Orsino to know that Natale Durante isn't just his client… she’s his mate. His first instinct is to lay Natale’s curvaceous body over his shoulder, find a den, and claim her with his bite. But, this beautiful head-strong woman only grudgingly endures his protection even as she welcomes him in her bed. He’ll have to set aside his bear’s need to mark her until he’s eliminated the threat to her life. Once she’s safe, he’ll turn all his energies convincing her that he isn’t after a short-term dalliance, he wants her, with him… forever.

Natale Durante knows that Durante Fashion House is on its last legs. Her new line, designed for women of every size and shape, is her last attempt at saving her family’s legacy. But there are those in high fashion who prefer that things stay the same—curves belong on the road, not the runway. When complaints and hate mail escalate to threats of bodily harm, her father hires a bodyguard—Salvatore Orsino. He’s over six feet of deliciously seductive muscular male and a distraction she can’t afford. One look from him and she wants her infuriatingly persistent protector to rip off her clothes with his teeth, or she might do the same to him.

Can Salvatore eliminate the threats to Natale or will he lose her before he has a chance to claim her?

For 40 years alpha wolf shifter, Warrick, experienced pure torture at the hands of his twin brother to keep his mate alive. Only meeting Hope a couple of times while she was still a child, Warrick not only lives with the torture, but with the knowledge that Hope hates him because she thinks he killed her parents.

When Hope finally learns the truth, she and her brother help save Warrick. Now he and Hape work to help their pack heal, but still worry that at any time, Warrick's brother can come and take everything they are building away from them.

I've only had the opportunity to read this one book in the series, and even though I'm coming in at book 4, I really like it so far. Both Warrick Hope are good strong characters. I love their love story. The author has written an interesting background story featuring wolves, dragons and vampires. Even though I've started at book 4, it probably would be better to start at book one.

Description:

No amount of magic can separate those the Fates have bond together.

Alpha shifter Warrick has spent the last forty years in captivity, tortured and replaced by his sadistic twin brother, Gabriel. His only happiness comes by knowing that his sacrifice has protected his mate, Hope.

Hope has spent years believing that her mate betrayed her and killed her parents. But when she and her brother, Damien, attempt to defeat Warrick and take back their pack, Hope is surprised to find Warrick broken, beaten, and clinging to life. Her mate hasn’t betrayed her, after all.

Now the two long-lost mates have a chance to rebuild their packs - and their relationship. But Hope struggles to overcome years of misplaced anger and Warrick is crippled by guilt.

And Gabriel is still out there, waiting for a chance to strike again.

Jessy Sarli gets a strange call from her sister and soon realizes that the other woman has disappeared, leaving Jessy so many questions. The biggest one is did Jessy give birth and if so what's happened to the child.

As Jessy searches the country for her sister and possible niece, Sheriff Colt Hennessy finds a surprise bundle on the front steps of his office with a note asking him to take care of the little girl. Not wanting to leave the care of the child to social services, Colt arranges to take the child in. He suspects the child is like him and he knows he can better protect the child if he has her.

It takes some time for Jessy to finally find at least her sister's child, but how is she going to explain to the man who has the child that only her instinct tells her that the little girl who Colt has been raising all this time might be part of Jessy's family.

Very sweet story of a kind hearted cop and his love for a child. So sweet that the circumstances to how the hero get the child in the first place seems a little out of place for the rest of the book. Otherwise a good short story and quick read.

Colt Hennessy is a werebear on a mission. The small town sheriff finds himself caring for a baby left at his doorstep and no sooner than it happens does he discover that this little bundle of joy was exactly what he'd been missing. That this man is the only one who can help her, and Lana.

When the cause for Jessy's sister's disappearance comes out, she will need all the help she can get. And not only her and the baby, but her heart as well...

Big Bear Daddy is a standalone werebear surprise baby romance novella that has a guaranteed HEA; no cheating. If you like shifters that stay true to their mission and the curvy, confident woman who love them, then this is just the book for you!

This is book 9 of the Dragon Kin series and as with all books by this author, I just loved it. I think over the past few years G.A. Aiken (aka Shelly Laurenston) has really developed as a writer and while some might think by book 9 the series would get boring or the storyline will lose it's spark, I think she has enough different characters, both villains and good guys in the stories she's developed that she can keep going and not run out of room to grow.

While many series stick with the same male/female lead throughout the story in a series introducing previous characters liberally, Aiken splits between storylines and keeps the action flowing. The only problem I see is that in this instance she didn't have enough time to develop the love story between Branwen and Aiden. I would of liked to have seen a little more time with those characters to see their love grow.

As always I was excited to see the rest of the gang. Bringing back Annwyl the Bloody as her usual crazy self with her mad fighting skills, the Daughters of the Steppes who really add the comic relief through most of the story and seeing Branwen's cousin Rhona the Fearless and her trunk load of handy weapons (especially funny since Brannie decided to check out the lot completely naked while thinking nothing of it).The names of the characters are entertaining.

If you like a lot of action, fighting and loving this story is for you. It isn't necessary to read the previous books, but they are that good you won't want to miss out. The author doesn't write them in any particular order so you can start with this one and work your way backward if you like.

(I received a free copy of this book in order to write a review that was based on my own true opinion.)

Description:

I, Aidan the Divine, am, well divine. My name was given to me by the Dragon Queen herself! I’m a delight! Cheerful. Charming. And a mighty warrior who is extremely handsome with a very large and well-hidden hoard of gold. I am also royal born, despite the fact that most in my family are horrendous beings that don’t deserve to live. And yet, Branwen the Awful—a low-born, no less—either tells me to shut up or, worse, ignores me completely.

I’ll admit, I ignore Aidan the Divine because it annoys him. A lot. But, we have so much to do right now, I can’t worry about why he keeps staring at me, or why he always sits so close, or why he keeps looking at me like he’s thinking about kissing me. We have our nations to save and no time for such bloody foolishness…no matter how good Aidan looks or how long his spiked tail is. Because if we’re going to win this war before it destroys everything we love, we’ll have to face our enemies together, side by side and without distractions. But if we make it out alive, who knows what the future will hold…

Good story, but the book does have several type-os that might in the way for some readers.

But when her sudden decision to visit a National Park makes her take the wrong turn, she finds herself chased by a ferocious monster. Danger shouldn’t be this sexy . . .

Cougar shifter Abby Carter always plays it safe. That’s why she’s an accountant—no excitement, no danger, and no cocky alpha males. She loves her quiet life, but fate has other plans. When Abby uncovers the shady dealings of an anti-shifter organization, she’ll have to trust the too-sexy-for-her-peace-of-mind werewolf

Declan Reed . . . or end up six feet under.

Declan Reed is starting over. After two years with Shifter Operations Command, it’s time to put his past behind him. Now Declan is the only thing standing between the gorgeous Abby and an early grave, and if he’s going to have any chance of keeping her alive, he’ll have to embrace the darkness he’s fought to keep at bay. But first he has to convince Abby that there’s no safer place in the world than the arms of a big bad werewolf.

I'm a big fan of Celia Kyle. She has a fantastic ability to make you laugh out loud while you're reading. Many of her stories are quick reads. "Wolf's Mate" is a little different from her previous books. This one is a little more serious in nature and a little longer than some of her others.

In Wolf's Mate the two lead characters are a little more complicated. The hero, Declan, knows that he isn't a good person and can't possibly be good enough for innocent Abby.

Abby witnessed her parents being killed by a group that kills shifters when she was a child. When she grew up she decides to live a quiet life as an accountant. Two couldn't be more different.

I also think she spent a little more time world building on her subject, which leaves the reader a chance to get into the characters and the story behind the characters relationship.

This is a continual series, although you could stop with just this one story, but you'll be looking forward to reading more in the end.

Khaza would give anything to be a mother herself. When an opportunity comes along, will Chashan be able to Khaza her greatest dream.

A very short Preor story. Chashan and his mate have been in most of the previous stories, it is nice to see a story where a mated Preor pair is the subject of a story.

Description:

A mother’s plea, a childless alien’s promise, and a Preor warrior torn between his mate and duty…

After a hundred years of mating, Healing Master Chashan thought he knew all there was to know about his mate, Heart Master Khaza. But the sudden presence of one adorable human baby shows him that he’s very, very wrong.

Now he has a choice: claim a human baby as his own and put joy in his mate’s heart, or turn the child over to human authorities.

Which will he choose? Honor or love?

This short story is set in the DRAGONS OF PREOR world and is a little bite of family life for those who fell in love with the Preor dragons.

This is the 31st book in the Breed series. For the past several books the Breed series have been concentrating on saving Jonas Wyatt’s baby daughter from the serum that the evil Boardmore gave her. During the series we learn of three young breeds that escape from the labs and are hidden away by the community of Window Rock.

Judd is a young breed who we learn helps the two young girls escape from the labs they were in. Jonas is anxious to get his hands on the three breeds as is the dreaded Council. And let us not forget the very disturbing Gideon. Gideon has been teaching for the three you breeds for years (or so we think).

Now that we’re read the stories of Honor and Fawn, the two girls everyone has been searching for, as well as found out that Gideon isn’t as crazy as we once thought, it is time to meet Judd. Judd, like the two girls has been hiding in plane sight and his mate has always been close too.

Cullen Maverick is a recessed Bengal breed. As the commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency, many believed he was human, but once Gideon’s identity was revealed so was Judd’s and Cullen came out as the breed he is.

When Cullen first moved to Window Rock he fell in love with a human and married her. Cullen’s wife soon died of cancer, but everyone always assumed that he was heartbroken after losing his mate. Everyone including his wife’s cousin Chelsea Martinez.

All these years Chelsea has lived knowing that she would never have the man she loved. Cullen had met his mate and he would never be hers, but she could have the career she has always wanted. Unfortunately Cullen was blocking that dream, so it was time for Chelsea to leave.

It isn’t until Chelsea walks out on him, the Cullen finally realizes he’s waited too long to claim Chelsea and if he doesn’t act quick he could lose her for good. But not everyone wants Chelsea and Cullen to get together. Someone would rather see the two suffer, and Cullen needs to find out who to save Chelsea’s life.

I love this series and watching Cullen and Chelsea fall in love through all the action and mating heat is well worth this read. However, I was a little distracted through the book by the inconsistency in the story and previous other stories. I even went back to reread previous books because parts of this story really bothered me. If you can get past that this is really a good book, with a surprise ending leaving us ready to check out the next story, which I hoping will be Cassie Sinclair’s story.

Description:

When readers of dark romance and unbridled desire want to be satisfied, they turn to #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh and her “powerful and highly erotic” (Fresh Fiction) Breed novels. Now a Breed hides in the world of man—until a woman arouses the amused and wildly carnal animal within...

Once, he was Judd—Bengal Breed and brother to the notorious fugitive Gideon.

After Gideon disappeared, Judd was experimented on until his tortured body knew nothing but agony.

Now he is Cullen Maverick, serving as the commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency in the small community of Window Rock, Arizona. Despite his genetics, Cullen is able to pass as human because his Bengal traits are recessed. He lacks the ability to smell the emotions, bonds and fears that other Breeds take for granted. And he remains tormented that he wasn’t able to mate the woman he loved—at the cost of her life.

He’s no longer a Breed, merely a man. . . or so he thinks. But his tiger is about to be awakened by the one woman destined to be his—Chelsea Martinez. And their world will never be the same...

A MacTire/Silver romance. Ellie MacTire and her sister have had their Inn in Silver Town open for a while now. They have lived with one ghost that so far hasn’t bothered their guests. Until a piano is delivered to the Inn from the Silver brothers.

Their GreatAunt Matilda always loved the piano, but it isn’t until they get the piano to the Inn that the GreatAunt makes her first appearance. Now Ellie and her sister, which help of the Silver brother, Brett, have to work quickly to see if they can get GreatAunt Matilda on her way.

The only question is, why after so many years has Matilda decided to make herself know. Is there a mystery to her death or does she just really love her piano and wants to stay with it until eternity.

In the meanwhile, Brett Silver knows that Ellie is her mate, but he realizes right away that Ellie is going to take a little time to convince. Are they dream mating, or is Ellie just really attracted to Brett. Once a wolf mates, it is for life, so Ellie really wants to be sure.

Solid story that can be read alone or with other parts of the series, especially A Silver Wolf Christmas (Silver Town Wolf Book 5). I like the ghost story and the briefly added comic relief with the sister’s cousins, who have their own ghost hunting television show.

Celia Kyle takes a different track with The Werewolf Tycoon's Baby. In previous books by this author you see a lot of sass and circumstance, but in this book we see a more serious side. On a holiday vacation, full human Lissa meets a Greek tycoon and falls madly in love, she gives the man her virginity and oops, of course get pregnant. Learning their is a master plan in action to steal her baby from her and dispose of her, Lissa runs from the man she comes to find out is a werewolf. The start of the books finds Lissa caught by the werewolf tycoon, Galen, and dragged back to Greece.

Galen, of course, has no idea why she ran, but Lissa doesn't realize this. While I like this book it runs pretty much like one would predict. I was hoping for some turns and twists. However, I did like the writing and hope that Celia will consider using this more serious approach in future books. This book is definitely worth a read.

Description:

She thinks he's after her child, but what he really wants is… her.

For Melissa Hill, a relaxing vacation to Greece involved not only sand, but billionaire Galen Liakos as well. Their passion burned hot and bright, but when their love was threatened and their differences became painfully clear, Melissa disappeared with a hastily scribbled note.

Thank you for a wonderful vacation…

Galen Liakos is not merely a billionaire, he is the Alpha of the Liakos pack, and he is not one to be denied. Melissa is his mate, and he will have her with him once again. Non-negotiable. When he hunts her down, finding her heavily pregnant and struggling to survive, there is only one answer.

Galen will have Melissa in Greece, in his den, with his ring on her finger, and his claiming bite on her shoulder!

As a member of Prior quintet, Brukr is charged with protecting the women working to ensure that all human woman learn about the cure for Pol Mutation. One female in particular has been causing Brukr a lot of frustration. Hannah is a little too independent for Brukr’s taste, but Brukr takes his position seriously.

Brukr has always been attracted to Hannah, but since he has not felt the “knowing” with Hannah how can she be his mate? He keeps his distance waiting to see if fate has gifted him her mate after she accepts the cure.

But Hannah has her secrets. She hasn’t told the Preor exactly who she is and has not intention of getting the cure. When her past catches up with her, will Brukr be able to keep her safe or will he lose her to another.

Taking place in an alternate earth where aliens have taken a place in the world to help the humans who have destroyed the planet, these weredragons are on a journey to find their fated mates. When they finally find their mates there is much to learn between the two male and female in every relationship. Often communication between the two the hardest obstacle to face.

Hannah and Brukr are both running for their wounded pasts trying to make their way in the world. Both independent and wanting the best for each other. I liked both characters and those in the quintet that make up the background story.

The ship’s computer, and the hacker “Liquid Knot”, are being further developed in this story, I suspect that there will be more about the hacker in a future story. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store in future books.

Description:

He’s willing to lose his honor to claim her, but first he must save her.

The Preor emperor bestowed honors on warrior Brukr sen Zak’lu centuries ago—honors he does not deserve. Since then, he has fought to prove himself worthy of the emperor’s support. He works to protect and care for the females within Preor Tower no matter how difficult they make his task. One female constantly disregards orders and makes his duty nearly impossible. Hannah—with her flowing hair, teasing smiles, and generous curves—torments him with what he cannot have. He aches for her like no other, his dragon rages when he leaves her side, but without the Knowing stretching between them he cannot claim her. Or can he?

Genetic modifications have changed Hannah’s appearance, but they can’t change her past. To atone, she steps into the spotlight as a spokesperson for Cole-Daven and moves into Preor Tower. Every day she struggles to convince other humans to accept Cole-Daven’s treatment for Pol Mutation. She also fights her attraction to one specific alien Preor. They’re not mates, but everything in her craves the large, muscular, deliciously tempting dragon shifting warrior.

With her exposure to the public, Hannah now has humans after her. Some want to possess her, others want to torture her, and many want to kill her. That is unacceptable to Brukr and he will tell them so… with his war blades.

MISTER MONEYBAGS

I met Bianca in an elevator.
She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck.
The beautiful, raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed.
She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she’d dubbed “Mister Moneybags”—her afternoon appointment.
Bianca told me how much she hated Dex’s type—snobby, over educated, silver-spooned men who didn't appreciate the simple things in life.
So, after the elevator finally started moving again, I cancelled the interview and let her believe I was someone I wasn’t—a bike messenger named Jay. I loved the way she looked at the fake me and didn't want it to end.
I began dating her as “Jay”—all the while letting her interview the real me over email.
I didn’t expect that our chemistry online would be just as hot.
I didn’t expect the mess I’d gotten myself into.
I didn’t expect that Jay and Dex would fall in love with her.
And she was falling for two men.
Only, both men were me.
And when she found out, we were both going to lose her.
Nothing could have prepared me for that day. And I certainly wasn't prepared for what came after.
All good things must come to an end, right?
Except our ending was one I didn't see coming.
