Success in Oakland. Brian Freeman and his crew launched what is sure to become an annual tradition with this weekend’s inaugural Oakland Blade Jam. Bringing together a gritty city skateboard park, the local hardware store and countless volunteers and contributions, the OBJ went down without any visible hitches showing that with the right mix of perseverance and vision bladers can rally their communities to achieve blade-friendly goals.

With Shredweiser and the Bay Area locals repping hard, the We Are One crew rolled in from SLC, Erick Rodriguez and Mike Obedoza popped up from Long Beach, and pieces of the Valo posse came through from Santa Ana. Even Carson Starnes and Chris Smith from Georgia. We’re happy to report the travel was not in vain as BFree & Co’s hard work paid off.

The contest showed the crowd great blading and ended with David Sizemore displaying his eye for the seemingly impossible. Along the way many sweet maneuvers were put down, and we managed to catch a couple. Check out ONE @ Oakland Blade Jam.

I was invited to Moscow for a street contest last summer. While i was there i was blessed to meet the man, the myth, the legend Andrey Zaytsev!

Skating with Z was so sick. He was always super motivated and always energized for skating! His trick selection and style is untouchable. He skates big stuff, he skates very fast, and he is always in control. Such a G!

My opinion he is easily one of the most talented people to every put on a pair or rollerblades. Thank you Andrey, even in your passing you continue to inspire the world! Miss you my friend, still can’t believe your gone, were doing this for you now! – Josh Glowicki.

This is Amsterdam‘s Golden Boy: Daan Hegt. Not only does he make skating look super nice, he has also created the soundtrack to this profile.

Even though Daan Hegt is hardly skating these days, he still manages to kill it on the streets of Amsterdam.

This lack of bladetime is mostly due to his efforts as a producer: together with his buddy Joel they are known to Amsterdam as Flash Grimey. Go get their album (free download + stream).

Just like VHS, DVDs are coming to an end which I think is a sad truth but it is a truth all the same. The amount of online content you get to see in skating is astronomical but there is very little that lives on that you watch over and over like you did when Brain Fear Gone came out.

In my opinion when looking at skating in general, the danger level and difficulty level has declined majorly. I still like a lot of peoples skating but just speaking in general.

But if you look at the best bladers in the world they don’t fall into that general population. Iain Mcleod and myself discussed making a section that we would put out that people would always remember, and truly respect which is a bit harder to do now because of the fast speed of content via the internet.

1 year ago we put together a list of tricks and spots that we both thought was close to impossible. I put the word “close” there because it gives skaters like Iain enough wiggle room to make it happen. I explained to Iain that if we were going to do this together that I would have to be able to shoot it the way I wanted without any interference. He agreed.

Every spot that was skated for this project was looked at ahead of time for the most part. There were new spots and tricks that we hit that were not on our original list for many reasons such as they were no longer in existence, you would get busted too fast, or you probably have a good chance of breaking your legs and or dying.

But for all the other spots on the list I went to them ahead of time because I wanted to see what the best ways were to move the camera if to move it at all to capture the tricks on the list. I wanted to look at how many cameras we needed and then plan out how many people we needed to help shoot that spot.

I was happy using the 5DMarkiii for most of the section. But I hated the fisheye on the full frame camera. I don’t really like to use fisheyes anymore even though it is a big part of skating. But for some of the shots I thought it was necessary to have a fisheye shot.

So all the fisheye shots were done on a 60D. we used the GOPRO HD hero black a few times too. We were going to use a Phantom Miro for one of the gaps but we ended up not wanting to hit that gap because we realized it was just too big to fakie 720 and Iain had already 540d it a decade earlier so we couldn’t down grade the trick. When we decided on the song I started thinking about how I wanted the section to look and what lenses I wanted on curtain cameras. We even looked at what spots we wanted to light up and which we wanted to shoot in the day.

I also decided that I wanted the light to be a little yellow so I stayed away from HMI lights which financially works perfect. Every aspect of the section was thought out before hand to a certain degree. Of course you must adapt to circumstances shooting stuff like this all over the palce without permission.

What was special about shooting this section was just how impossible some of the tricks really were. We often had to leave a spot empty handed and plan to come back to it another time or walk away from it permanently because of the absolute certainty that Iain would be hurt on it.

It is amazing to see even Iain have to walk away from tricks because it just doesn’t happen often. We both knew there was no possible way for any human being to complete a list like this for a section not even in a year and probably not even in a life time. So the agreement became to get as many as we could done and if anything was added or replaced we both had to agree that the trick was up to our standards.

We did make it clear that there would be no filler clips in the section at all. There may be different tricks and there may be tricks not as hard as the best ones but there would not be any fillers. I think this is super rare because even the best section by the best skaters in the world and I include Iain’s sections have fillers. They always do even when you look at your favorite skaters in the world their sections have fillers.

I actually don’t think I have ever seen a section where every single trick in it was a challenge that the skater had to put 100% effort to get done. We just don’t care because the rest of the section is so mind blowing. Sometimes just one filler for the whole section, but they always pop up. This isn’t the skaters fault Most of the time it’s the editors fault because they don’t know any better or just want to fill in space or don’t know the skater well enough to say “hey I need something better” because for all they know the skater may say “go fuck yourself.”

I think this section will stand out above all others Iain has done because we grew up skating together and we have a working relationship when it comes to shooting. Not always a good one but we have one. I know what Iain is capable of and I don’t let him do things that aren’t going to either make him put in 100% effort or aren’t going to scare him.

He knows I won’t even bother using the trick if it’s not up to par. And in since we have this sort of relationship he knows exactly what is being put in the section. There were a lot of times that I wanted to kill Iain and a lot of times he wanted to kill me.

As I move forward with my life I find myself shooting a lot of different projects that really have no connection to blading. I love shooting stories. Lighting and moving the camera to highlight the story and set the mood or evoke an emotion or just to make shit look cool sometimes if that is what the circumstance calls for is what I love about cinematography. You are able to effect people just by something visual.

I find that this is more challenging in a lot of ways than shooting blading because in comparison to blading I have not been doing this nearly as long. Also in blading you are usually telling a very general story if one at all. When you light in blading you just light to make it visible and to look good. It doesn’t really have any connection to the trick being done. There are rare occasions where this is not true but for the most part you are shooting something that is impressive no matter what so the cinematography is not as important.

I tried to change that while Iain and I shot this part. I do believe that great shooting and editing can make a good section great. But when people say stuff like “you must be hyped to be shooting real stuff and not just blading all the time,” it sort of bothers me in a small way even if they are paying me a genuine compliment. Blading is as real as it gets. On almost everything else I have ever shot we never just do one take minus documentaries.

When someone is trying some that puts there life on the line no matter how good they are, you better not be counting on a take 2 or 3 or 4 ect… You really have to capture that moment as best you can once. You also usually don’t have an AD, or producer, or focus puller or any of the other people that are on sets to help you out with everything. So no matter if your shooting with a RED EPIC, or an Alexa or a phantom, or a 5d, or 60d, or DVX, or GL1 or a fucking iPhone. You are still in charge of capturing a moment that a lot of times may only be able to happen once. So shooting blading is not easy by even on a low budget level.

So many stories and crazy shit went down while shooting this but we agreed that we would both work our hardest on this part so by the end we had no regrets. I am so proud of this section for so many reasons. I think the reason this project worked out so well was because Iain and I worked very closely on it and our standards were very high for the skating and how we were going to capture it. So regardless of the Opinions of the world out there. This is one of the most amazing rollerblading sections I have ever seen. And I was lucky enough to have a front row seat for it.

Come take a journey through a few skate parks in Lima (Peru). I was asked to go to Lima to attend the RAIP competition back in March. I had such an incredible time while in Lima.

Both skate parks are new one we got to skate during the construction process. The second skate park was designed a build by an ex pro rollerblader Peter Henningsen.

This is the first skate park of 5 to be built. They are expecting to have all 5 built by the end of the year! Needless to say, Peru is the place to be! – Josh Glowicki.

Kevin Yee is an unmistakable force on blades. Long known as an innovator of the more boundary-pushing order, the man who once slid on his hips and hands through a VG section became a modern pioneer of negative grinds and has forever emphasized lines and complexity over things like “sessionable spots”.

Besides continuing his rolling evolution, Yee is working in the fringe blade territories of perception and expectation, looking to challenge all in his quest to Stay Fakey.
