In terms of changes to this year’s game-play, the new class system is easily the biggest change. Gamers who crave team experiences should know that 6 v. 6 Online Team Play, Online Couch Co-op, or the fan favorite, EA SPORTS Hockey League have all been rebuilt with this new class system that EA Sports is touting as “a more competitive and balanced experience.” While we don’t have all the details, the basic idea behind the class system is that you now select what types of players will be on your team. Will you pack your team full of big bruisers and try to smash your opponents into submission? Will you choose mostly fast skaters with strong puck handling skills? How you outfit your team will determine the strengths and weaknesses of your team.

From what you do, to how you do it, NHL 16 makes every position on the ice meaningful to team success; with innovation on offense and defense, players have new tools to not only score goals, but to prevent them as well. Precision Skating makes refined movements possible in any situation and Seamless Puck Pickups allow the ability to quickly control a pass or corral a loose puck. NHL 16 also introduces the all new On-Ice Visual Trainer and smarter Coach Feedback; both tools will teach new players how to learn the fundamentals and give returning players tips on how to build on their NHL skills. All this comes to life with distinct arena atmospheres, the most realistic players – and their playoff beards – and a story-driven commentary package of Doc Emrick, Eddie Olczyk and Ray Ferraro to pull fans into the energy of the game like never before.

It would appear that regulars to the franchise will recognize most of the rest of the game. As per usual Be-A-Pro mode lets games start their career in the minors and takes them through a new progression system where how they play on the ice shapes who they become in the NHL. Armchair GMs can navigate the motions of draft day and manage their AHL affiliate team. Although for the first time ever GMs can now also manage the morale of individual players on their team.

Since videogames are still a business. EA Sports wanted us to pass along that fans who pre-order the game will receive up to $15 worth of Hockey Ultimate Team content. Gamers can also start their hockey experience with the NHL 16 Deluxe Edition that comes with up to $50 added value of Hockey Ultimate Team content. As for NHL® 15 owners, they will receive 10 HUT packs if they pre-order or purchase NHL16 through direct digital download on the Xbox Marketplace or PlayStation Store when the offers are available.

Just a heads up that in a few weeks, and for the rest of the summer, we’ll be moving time slots. We’re not going far, but you can catch us at 8 AM on Sunday mornings starting this June 14th.

“Bringing some of the best women’s players and teams in the world to our franchise is a massive event for EA SPORTS, and we are equally excited about bringing millions of fans a new way to play,” said David Rutter, VP and GM, EA SPORTS FIFA. “We’re making sure fans get an authentic experience when playing with Women’s National Teams thanks to our innovative player capture and reference tools, as well as the sophisticated gameplay platform which we will continue to innovate on in FIFA 16.”

Soccer Canada also visited EA Sports to provide full-player references captured using the 360 degree body scanning rig – the references were then used to develop new player models. Sydney Leroux, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe from the United States Women’s National Team provided players movements that helped build new locomotion for women in FIFA 16 including new walks, runs, sprints, and horizontal movement. If you tend to cheer for someone else, EA Sports also sent out their mobile head scanning unit to make sure the faces of all 12 teams were in FIFA 16.

“I honestly can’t believe all of the science and technology behind the game itself, let alone getting us into the motion capture suits and eventually into the game,” said Abby Wambach, world record holder for International goals scored and forward, United States Women’s National Team. “We’re all excited to see ourselves in the game, but even more excited to see the reaction from all of the fans, including the fans of our team that maybe wouldn’t be expecting something like this from EA SPORTS.”

FIFA 16 with Women’s National Teams will be available when the game launches on the Origin store that Electronic Arts sells PC games on, the Xbox One, the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Since we’ll talk  so much about Cineplex hosting more activities focused on gaming, I thought it might help to start off this week’s show blog by showing you what that could look like. The the following images are from the NHL 14 tournament that Cineplex held, while I filled the role of the Master of Ceremonies, back before the game was officially out that year.

Obviously, it’s not a complete tour of Cineplex’s idea, but it should give you some idea of what to expect. Luckily, we can still give you a better idea of what Cineplex is planning. Now that the show has stopped production, Mikey has started up a new project and this one focuses on a videogame. His goal is to make a King of Kong style documentary called Pixelated Heros and it will feature the original NHL94 in all its 16-bit glory.

Mikey joined us on Got Game on the Sportsnet Radio Network this week to discuss the project, and we’ve learned that one of the parts of this documentary will be an all out videogame war in the form of a tournament for the best NHL94 players in the world; although, at this point very little is known about the tournament beyond the firm date of September 12th 2015.

“I don’t have the location yet. It is part of the reason I am here scouting locations.” Mikey went on to explain on Got Game this week, “I am going to bring in people from all over North America. Some people from Finland and Mexico [will be] coming in to see who will be the best NHL94 player.”

When we asked Mikey to explain the phenomenon of Mexican NHL94 players he said, “[NHL94] I kind of joke is Canadian chess. You can be anywhere. As long as you have a Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, or computer you can play the game, so it has leaked into places that are not known for hockey.”

While Mikey stressed on Got Game that the tournament is still in the early planning stages, it is happening. It is a major part of the documentary he is filming after all. Since we don’t have the details yet, we’ll suggest that you keep one eye on the Pixelated Heros Facebook page. The details are not there either, but that’s where you will eventually find them once Mikey figures them out and makes them public.

A new cover athlete is not the only major change for this franchise. EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR is the first EA SPORTS title to be built using the Frostbite engine that allows them to hit golf balls over battleships. Frostbite also renders the entire course at once, eliminating load times between holes and allowing users to play their shot from almost any location.

“Frostbite has allowed us to take this franchise to a whole new level,” stated Brent Nielsen, Executive Producer of EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR. “The new engine drastically improves all facets of the game, from core gameplay to opportunities for brand-new modes and features. We’re looking forward to sharing a lot of great news with our fans throughout the rest of the spring.”

EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR will be released in June 2015.

MLB Manager 2015 will also feature Opening Day rosters, a Shop a Player function, and other new additions detailed below. The game will offer the most immersive experience for armchair baseball GMs who want to guide their favorite teams to glory on mobile devices. It will sell for US$4.99, with historical seasons available as in-app purchases.

“We’re thrilled that MLB Manager 2015 will follow in OOTP 16’s footsteps with a feature that will help it stand out among other mobile baseball games,” said MLB Manager lead developer Sebastian Palkowski. “Between the MLB.com license and all the other great new features, MLB Manager remains the perfect way to get in a little baseball managing while on the go.”

In addition to the MLB.com license and iOS and Android support, MLB Manager 2015 will also include these features:

• 2015 Opening Day rosters: Each team will have its projected 40-man Opening Day roster, as well as 20-25 top prospects, for a total of 60-65 players. A subsequent free update will include the official Opening Day rosters.
• Shop a Player: This option was brought over from OOTP to allow GMs to suggest a player for a possible trade and field offers from other teams.
• Simulate to Date X: GMs can now simulate to a specific date, and a new Don’t Disturb feature allows uninterrupted long-term sims.
• Player Shortlist: GMs can now add players to their shortlists so they can quickly return to their profiles any time. It’s a useful feature for tracking players’ careers after they leave a team.

MLB Manager 2015’s core features include:

• Three game modes:

1. Major League: Mobile managers guide their favorite Major League Baseball teams through the 2015 season and beyond
2. Fictional: A fresh customizable world full of fictional players, providing a unique challenge each time
3. Historical Major League: Three exciting past seasons to recreate — 1919, 1939, and 2012 — with the ability to buy more through in-app purchases. (Historical seasons are $0.99 each, 10 for $4.99, or all seasons dating back to 1901 for $19.99.). In Historical Major League mode, real players show up in the draft when they made their actual major league debuts, assuming the user owns those seasons.

• Managerial options that enable players to set lineups, pitching rotations, and depth charts before taking the field to make in-game calls, including when to issue hit-and-run and steal signs, how to configure the defense, when to pull pitchers and put in pinch-hitters, and more.

• An in-depth financial system that allows players to unleash their inner GMs. Are they looking for undervalued players who might help the team win while keeping payroll low, or are they free-wheeling spenders seeking high-profile free agents for the big win?
• Players oversee trades, negotiate contract extensions, sign free agents, draft players, cultivate minor league prospects, move players between the active roster, minor league roster and disabled list, and more.

Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) officially announced that R.B.I. Baseball 15 will be released this spring, making it the second edition of the video game franchise to be developed for the current console generation, smartphones and tablets. The NY-based media and technology arm of the Major League Baseball informed us in a press release that they have been working since last year to deliver an all-new R.B.I. Baseball game with high-resolution graphics and a suite of new features, many of which began as fan feedback from their first attempt to remake the home console classic.

One piece of feedback might have been the lack of a cover athlete because Chicago Cubs All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo will serve as the game’s first-ever cover athlete, and that’s kind of odd because R.B.I. Baseball 15 won’t have a cover. It will be sold as a digital download this spring for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, iPhones, iPads, the iPod touch and supported Android smartphones and tablets.

The rest of the feedback about last year’s version spawned the follow features for this year’s edition of R.B.I. Baseball:

1. BALLPARKS: Completely redesigned authentic Major League ballparks for all 30 franchises, each crafted with detailed design characteristics fans will easily recognize.
2. FULL ROSTERS: Play with complete 25-man Major League rosters for all 30 teams, modifying your batting order or pitching rotation at any point. Set the active 25-man roster from each franchise’s 40-man roster.
3. STAT TRACKING: Track batting and pitching statistics in season mode for the first time ever, including viewable team, player and season league leaderboards.
4. ONLINE PLAY: Choose to play in online multiplayer mode in friendly and ranked games.
5. GAMEPLAY SETTINGS: Pick your competition level – Easy, Medium or Hard.
6. PC & MAC DEBUT: Introducing availability for personal computers on the Steam platform, coming this spring.

In the press release we received from the Advanced Media arm of Major League Baseball, the game’s creators described their game in their own words, “R.B.I. Baseball 15 will include the many features added in its off-season while remaining fast-paced and fun to play with the genre’s classic two-button controls. Players can master the art of hitting and fielding easily with the retro controls and manually manage the movement and location of every pitch from release to crossing the plate.

With the expansion to include more than 1,000 active Major League players in its roster database, R.B.I. Baseball 15 will include detailed on-field attributes for every player, again updated from the hundreds of millions of data points collected and analyzed by MLBAM.“

Not only will the Patriots win this year, according to the Madden NFL Football franchise, but they’re expected to start the scoring by marching down the field on their first possession and capping it off with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Rob Gronkowski. Seattle would answer with a field goal later in the quarter, keeping the game close heading into the 2nd. New England and Seattle will then trade TDs until Earl Thomas III intercepts a pass intended for Gronkowski and returns it 58 yards for a touchdown. The Seahawks will lead 17-14 as both teams retire for the half-time show.

Coming out of the locker room Seattle’s momentum is expected to continue and the Seahawks should score on their first possession with a 9-yard touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch. At this point the Patriots will come out swinging as Tom Brady connects with Rob Gronkowski for a 14 yard touchdown.

The final quarter is expected to be a defensive battle, with neither team able to put points on the board early. In the final minutes, Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis is expected to intercept a Russell Wilson pass and giving the Pats one last chance to win. The interception gives Tom Brady the chance to get the ball to Julian Edelman, who managed to slip out of a tackle and make a break for the end zone. Seattle’s Kam Chancellor will then sprint toward Edelman in order to make game saving tackle, but the speedy Edelman is expected to cross into the endzone with seconds left, securing the victory.

Tom Brady will be named the MVP of the game thanks to his 335 yard, 4-touchdown performance, his third such honor. Julian Edelman led all receivers with 8 catches for 106 yards, while Marshawn Lynch proved to be unstoppable on the ground with 118 yards and 2 touchdowns… at least according to the Madden NFL Football franchise.

Forza Horizon 2 was well received by the videogame audience; however, that one decent release for this current generation has come out beside games like DriveClub, which was just flat out broken when it came out (and 6 months after it came out). The Crew also came out this year and it was a big (and I mean big) playground; however, it struggled to keep players engaged. F1 2014 from the Codemasters was good, but it was hard to justify since it was a literal clone of the previous game from the previous year. Grid Autosport might be the best racing game of 2014, but that’s kind of depressing since it was not released on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

If Grid Autosport doesn’t win best racing game of 2014, NASCAR ’14 might end up being the winner. It came as a shock to frustrated NASCAR fans, but NASCAR ’14 was the 1st decent NASCAR game since EA Sports gave up on the sport. Since 2010, a Britished based developer named Eutechnyx has been working on NASCAR themed videogames and I am being polite when I say that their first few attempts were broken. With each new year a new iteration of Eutechnyx’s NASCAR games would be released, and while broken they were all at least improvements over the previous version. NASCAR ’14 was the 1st time fans could be proud of a NASCAR game made by Eutechnyx, and just as the British studio found their stride they gave up on developing NASCAR games.

We recently found out that the rights to make NASCAR videogames secretly transferred hands as the world celebrated the latest holiday season. DMi Games, a brand new studio created to make NASCAR games, acquired the NASCAR game rights and core art assets (like track and car models) from Eutechnyx.

The good news is that this will give DMi Games a starting point further down the road from scratch; in fact, DMi Games also purchased the rights to re-release NASCAR Manager (a NASCAR themed strategy game for mobile platforms that came out in August of 2014) and take over post-release work under their name. On top of that the president of DMi Games, Ed Martin, is a man who’s been working on NASCAR games since EA Sports made them; therefore, the franchise is in the hands of experienced people who really care about the product.

The bad news is that there won’t be a NASCAR game coming out until 2016 as a result of this rights transfer. DMi needs to staff up and the average game development cycle means a game probably won’t be ready until roughly holiday 2016.

Before we get things started this week, I wanted to take a sentence and thank you for another great year of Got Game. We literally could not do it without you, so thank you for tuning into that first show we did in 2009. Thank you for tuning into the show that we did this week, and thank you for every show between those two.

To everyone else we hope that your day off is enjoyable. We come from different places, we believe in different things, and we have different dreams; however, we all love videogames, so this week let’s all celebrate the concept of peace on Earth by putting our feet up and playing some videogames.

Now eventually you will have to take a break from the videogames, that is just the reality of fatigue on the human body. When you’re eyes start to water I suggest you shut and rest them, and spend the time listening to the latest edition of Got Game.
