This is a music player I’ve developed to promote the next Adobe Flash project I’m working on. It’s going to incorporate camera movement in a 3d space, motion blur, depth of field, and object interaction, and will be driven by a narrative. My main goal is to produce a portfolio piece that demonstrates my knowledge of Flash, both technically and creatively.

Click here for the full screen version

And this is a countdown timer, that I update over time. Here are the following features for the current model:

• It currently detects between day and night and changes the background, accordingly
• During the day, clouds can be dragged, forming rain to fall
• If the astronaut is in the air, he floats
• If the astronaut is dragged to the ground, he stands
• The astronaut will address the monkey when he is in his field of vision
• The monkey will balance if placed on top of the timer
• The monkey detects differences in levels between the numbers, and the dots
• The monkey goes limp when dragged
• The monkey will hang from the vine when dropped next to it
• The vine can be dragged on the x-axis, even if the monkey is hanging from it
• If the monkey is dropped on the ground, he will run
• The monkey will turn around, when he reaches the edge of the screen

The version below is being turned into an online app, and includes motion blur and events that happen at different times of the day.

This interactive exhibit demonstrates all the precautions taken by hospital staff to make sure the patient was taken care of. This is also known as an interventions exhibit. The bullet points to the right are compiled from tons of doctors’ and nurses’ notes. The interventions outlined here involve nursing, nutrition, medication, behavior, fall prevention, communication and miscellaneous. Obviously, none of the entries reference a particular case. All exhibits must be sanitized before they can be used in promotional packages.

I began by researching the documents I was provided. I then grouped the entries into categories. Next, I created a colored grid that displayed the concentration of entries and applied the texture to a 3-dimensional circle. I then used silhouettes of hospital staff members to represent each category, and placed the patient at the center of the circle. I then placed the entries into the slides and created interactive buttons that allowed the trial technician to navigate around the circle.

This project challenged me to present information in a more unconventional way, and as a result, expanded my level of creativity.

This case involved a patient who developed an abdominal infection because the doctor was either absent, unreachable, or non-communicative. The main argument this exhibit focuses on is the long stretch of time (55 hours) that the doctor was unresponsive. I had the the presentation move through that span of time, making it seem as long and arduous as possible.

This digital exhibit was, technically, not interactive. The attorney simply had to click and watch the events unfold chronologically, while communicating to the jury. Well, I guess that passes as interactive. It’s still a level of control, however small. I developed this in PowerPoint.

I learned that sometimes, simpler is better. Not every PowerPoint needs to have extensive controls or hotspots to click on. Sometimes, the argument can just speak for itself. However, I still took the liberty of adding illustrations to make the argument more visual.

This is the logo for voiceroot.org. The main goal was turning the words voice and root into a visual image. It was also important to understand what the website represents. Voiceroot.org is about getting to the root of an issue before speaking about it. The rings around the base of the plant represent the voice, and the hooks are the roots, curled into an almost menacing face. This was created with Illustrator.

This interactive exhibit was created to point out a shoddy construction job. Numerous repairs were required before this building could be inhabitable.

I was given some floorplans and photos to start. Overall, it was a really simple job. After I had learned what the exhibit was intended to show, I was given a lot of freedom. Another factor was that I had been doing interactive presentations for a while, and was trusted with a certain degree of creativity. I used PowerPoint to link all the animations together.

I learned that the trick to designing for litigation is to make sure the argument to be made is the number one priority. As long as you can communicate the argument, and that every aspect of the design reinforces it, you can’t go wrong.

This is a standard overhead accident diagram. It is usually printed with magnetic backing and proportionally sized magnetic vehicles. It is intended to reenact the events of a motor vehicle accident.

Accident diagrams are so common, all that’s required is an address. A google map screenshot is saved and redrawn as a vector image in either CorelDraw or Illustrator. Some assets like trees and roadside cones are repurposed, but most of the map is done from scratch.

The most important thing to know about accident diagrams is not to reinvent the wheel. Reuse the same assets whenever possible.

This interactive presentation was for a case that involved an employee stalking a co-worker. The client wanted to be able to jump to different points in the timeline and pull up relevant documents. The timeline format was utilized to reinforce the co-worker’s distress over a long period of time.

This job began with a set of documents that had to be digitized, cleaned, and imported into powerpoint. Relevant documents were made into entries, which linked to animations that faded the documents in. One of the entries even has a sound clip of a recorded voicemail. A depth of field effect was used to provide greater focus on whichever document was being displayed.

This was one of the first interactive presentations I put together, and it allowed me to experiment with allotting more control to the user.

This case was an argument on the quality of a wall and its ability to keep moisture out. It was necessary to illustrate each individual layer and ensure that each reflected a different texture. This is commonly referred to as a demonstrative exhibit, so exact textures weren’t necessary- only that the jury understood what each layer represented.

This is another proposal than began with a rudimentary sketch. Some research needed to be done on wall layers. The background was originally requested to be blue, but a gradient was employed here to distinguish the warmness of the inside of the wall, and the coolness of the outside. This was used as a visual reinforcement for the wall’s quality.

This was a pretty unconventional job, and is usually left to illustrators or 3d modelers, but if you can be versatile, demonstrative exhibits are available for graphic designers. It allows you to learn something new, as well, like wall layers.

This case involved a person who was suspected of committing insurance fraud. The person set their boat on fire sank it. The purpose of this exhibit was to show how close the location of the boat sinking was to nearby coast guards. Nautical charts were used for authenticity.

I opted to use two different maps of the same general area. In the zoomed in map, the distance seems small. But when that portion is laid on top of a map that embodies a large distance, it’s easier to see how close the person really was to the coast. I pulled the maps from NOAA’s archive, and designed the chart in CorelDraw.

This job is a good reminder to take advantage of online databases of public information.

I created this website at the end of 2004, for Title One Florida, a title and escrow company. The main goal was to create a website that allowed clients to apply for new homes and have access to refinance options online. The secondary goal was letting clients calculate closing costs online.

The design of the site was meant to reinforce the logo, which is intended to communicate real estate. So I built around the logo, and updated everything live so the client could send me feedback in real-time. An important aspect of the design was to keep the look as contained as possible, so I opted to make it small enough so that it would remain at the center of the screen. I also utilized frames so that when the user scrolled, the content would move, but the main page wouldn’t. Once the layout was approved, it was time to go into the functional features. As mentioned before, these included online forms and a calculator.

This exhibit was created in PowerPoint. It combines a chronological timeline with the ability to pull up a document as evidence. The aerial photograph in the background was outlined to emphasize where the construction began, and the little progress that was made.

This project was about integration. Digital presentations should take advantage of the ability to combine different ways of presenting information.

This wasn’t created for any particular case. It’s just another way I thought of presenting an accident at an intersection. It’s the same concept as Google© Maps’ street view. Rather than forcing the client to go online and pull up google maps, this interactive exhibits takes only the important images and contains them into a more streamlined presentation. This removes factors than can slow down a presentation, like being unfamiliar with Google© Maps’ interface, a slow internet connection or a disconnection.

This was also developed in PowerPoint. I saved the images from Google© Earth and created controls to navigate around the turn. I also added a vector map of the intersection to the top right for orientation purposes.

If there’s anything else I can share with you about presentations in the courtroom, it’s that they should be concise and to the point.
