5 Things You Need When Hiring a Freelancer

I've come to notice that whenever I'm beginning a relationship with one of my clients, somewhere in our first conversations, the topic of what I need, to start the work, arises. So I conjured up this magical list of the five most important things anyone looking to hire a freelancer (such as me) should have.

1. A general description.
Write what you visualize as the design/website/logo/etc... It can also be a specific description, but it should allow the artist to employ their art powers and create their vision on the project, always within the established boundaries.

2. A defined goal.
With this one, you need to be as specific as possible. In other words, Where do you want the work to take your business? Get younger people to call? Sell more red cars? Get more website traffic?

3. Flexibility.
Sometimes clients want to address a lot of different people with the same message/piece. Please understand, that sometimes it cannot be done, or it cannot be done well. Sometimes diverse messages are what it calls for!

4. Full spectrum of work.
Be clear with your hired gun. Tell your freelancer all the pieces you need. Also if the same design will show up in different media. This might affect the way we design or do certain things. For example: If we're designing a logo, we might do it on full color, but if it will be printed on a t-shirt, we might need to do a two color version of the logo. If we know this before-hand, we can adjust our design to be sure it will work later. Be transparent!

5. Payment.
Of course this is what makes everything go, so be sure to have 50% of the total amount to give up-front to commence work. Some Freelances charge 25% and others even charge full rate before doing anything. Be sure to ask about this. You should be on the same page with the person who will be giving life to your project. Sometimes you can even arrange for a monthly fee. And find out when will the last payment be due. Upon completion? Net 15? Net 30? Talk it out!

It's been a while and I haven't showed you any more photos I've manipulated. I must say, it's always fun to see what the image was and what it became.

So here I give you three examples of images I've worked on recently.

Turbine Man

Similar to the previous. For this image, done for Cabrera Auto, I used several stock images and my illustrative skills. The sky, some of the green area, the man, the car, the sign and the turbine were separate images. The road and some of the green areas were drawn by me.

This was done for Cabrera Auto. One of the clients, Jorge Blanco & Asociados has and I had the pleasure of working on. I used a shot of the dealership we had, and several stock images for the rest. The man, the rocket, the fire and smoke were separate images.

Diversión Pura

Searching the official Suzuki assets gallery for images that could be used for print media, I found this shot of a Grand Vitara in a river and the setting reminded me of El Yunque. So I went ahead and downloaded it. After a few minutes, "Having Fun" was the only thought that had stayed on my mind by just looking at the photo, so that's what I wrote. "Pure Fun".

Suzuki's First "Buy Back Mundial"

After the Huge success their original BuyBack was, Suzuki decided to offer those same benefits to every make out there, not just Suzuki owners. They needed a new website that expressed the "global" theme., while keeping the registry friendly enough so that car owners could register to have their car bought by Suzuki (no matter the Brand) and at the same time, entering a raffle for some cool prizes.

I had the opportunity to Team up with two friends to work on this project. I had a blast!

New Year's Resolution

A few weeks before 2011 ended, I found myself working on several designs that would become the look for many clients on 2012. Some saw the light of day and quickly got approved. Some were shown to the client and suffered a sudden death, while others never left the office. These are one of the latter.

The idea behind the design was to show our clients what they should list as one of the resolutions for the (then) upcoming New Year.

I felt the idea was strong and an eye stopper for anyone breezing through the newspaper. At the end, the idea was shot down internally because of the name. Apparently there's a dealership that has a similar name (as the campaign). Who knows, maybe in the future we'll get to use it with a different name.

Running Social Media efforts for @SanJuanSuzuki

It's been a little hectic, I admit it. Yet I'm proud to say that I officially run every Social Media effort for San Juan Suzuki. Well, not me entirely, see my good friend Ginny, is my counterpart in this venture. we do this for the Advertising Agency we work for: Jorge Blanco & Asociados. It's the first time we do it for someone/something other than our personal projects, and so far, oh-so-very good!

San Juan Suzuki, needed to enter the digital realm. A few months ago, we helped them with their website. A very BIG first step. Later we started talking about social media and showing them why, it would be beneficial for them to step into it. After many meetings and case studies later, we did it.

We began by administrating their Facebook Page, which had forty something likes. We created a landing Page for Facebook, and a tab that serves as their own mini Site on Facebook.

Later, we opened up a Twitter account, and dressed it up with their image. The same thing was done in YouTube. After following the first of many key people. we started Talking and engaging our new Social Media Friends.

A month later (today) we have increased the Facebook Page's likes to 1,429 and 71 Twitter followers. We have come across a few Ambassadors and also the occasional troubled client. We've been able to navigate our efforts with great results, and that fills us up with joy.

It's been a pleasure to work with Enrique Ortiz, of San Juan Suzuki and to steer his business front on the various Social Media stations we've set out. It is a very demanding job, that brings great pleasures in knowing you are making friends for the company which we are representing. We look forward to keep on working with San Juan Suzuki, and to see what the future brings on this new frontier.

The Ugliest Car in Puerto Rico

If you follow me on Twitter or on Facebook, you might've noticed some posts regarding The Ugliest car on Puerto Rico. Well, the truth of the matter is that, even though some have suggested I participate, I cannot, for I helped create the campaign.

Suzuki del Caribe, was in search of an innovative way of engaging people around the Island (Puerto Rico). So, the agency I work for contacted Mr. Victor Cabezas to come up with a concept, which he did, and we hurriedly converted and designed to make into a reality.

Basically, anyone that owns an ugly car, can drive to any Suzuki dealership and register their car. Afterwards, The picture and info is sent to me at the agency, I upload and notify the registrant and wish him good luck. The person spreads the link through their Facebook, Twitter, email, etc... to get people to come over an "Like" the car. The person with the most "Likes" wins.

We came up with seven prices for seven individuals who can win. We began in early september and so far, the contest has been fierce between a few ugly vehicles.

When my pal, Raúl Colón told me he wanted to start a parenting blog, I had no clue of the scope he had in mind for this project. Without hesitation I pledged my allegiance, and later found out he had world domination on his mind! Just kidding, although it was a much bigger project than what I had in mind. Nevertheless, my spirits were high and I jumped right in with great expectations.

For the logo and site, we wanted to do something Bold, catchy, inspiring and fun. After a few talks on how children view their parents, we knew we had no choice. I grinned from one side of my face to the other and said "super heroes" Raúl cracked up, for he had thought of the same thing.

Suzuki Buy Back

Recently, Suzuki started offering specialized service to their Puerto Rico customers, thus rewarding their loyalty. For this, we were asked to create an online registry that helped the customers reassure themselves as Suzuki Customers as well as entering for a chance to win some great prices.

Using our powers for visual metaphors, we envisioned the form as an actual paper form, and started off on that. Here's the end result.

Scotiabank's AutoMaratón

Agency work almost always begins with, or is in its entirety, explorative work. We love flexing our creative muscles, so when this sort of "exercise" is required of us, we draw our big guns and design our heart away.

Such was the case for Scotiabank's seventh Auto Maratón, were we were asked to come of with several design routes so the client could choose one. Although, ultimately not picked, we created a few designs for which we are most proud of, and decided to post them here for your viewing pleasure.

The final design was created by our friend and colleague @DGraphix so cheers to him for creating the winning design! (not shown here).

Lending a Helping Hand

A good friend of mine and my family's, has a Newborn nephew which was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks back. Their medical insurance will not cover for all the expenses to come. Yamil Colón, needs a bone marrow transplant. His twin sister Camila, died of this condition when no one suspected what was going on.

UNDOdigital, the Digital Artists collective which I helped create, has put up a few art pieces on their site to sell and somehow help Yamil's Family. I gave a few of my works to be sold. Logo Process: Raúl Colón's Blog & CIMA It Solutions

A lovely price waited for us at the project completion.

In the past, we've brought you our creative process on logo creations, but since that post was done a long time after the project was over, it lacked information on how we go about creating Brand Identities for our clients. We knew we needed another shot at it and were thrilled, when it came knocking at our door.

Back in december, right after he established a connection with me through Twitter, Raúl Colón (@rj_c) approached me to create his corporate identity and personal blog identity as well. If you've read this blog before, you know how much we LOVE creating Brand Identities. Designing a logo is like creating a magic trick. We get to define visually someone and at the same time outperform whatever we've done in the past.

Since Raúl needed two logos, we didn't want one to outshine the other. And since we try to out do ourselves on every project, we decided to create both identities at the same time. Some call us overachievers, that's the best compliment we've ever had.

Part I.

The first thing we did, was read every last letter on our creative brief (provided by Raúl). We wanted to make sure we delivered on all or most of the goals described. (Not every goal can or should be addressed in a logo, it could get ugly). Raúl provided us with a perfectly detailed information on what he stood for on both his blog and company. He had a clear view of his stands and that provided us with the background needed to commence our designing journey.

Part II.

Research. We looked all over the internet and books to find those logos that other talented designers accomplished for diverse clients. Not only did we not want to end up having something similar, we wanted to improve everything. We stalked Raul's Twitter, blog and company page. We watched how he interacted with others. How he expressed his thoughts on every post. How his honesty, depth and humble knowledge was always put forth for anyone that needed his counsel. We had plenty of material to get going. We needed inspiration, and we got it.

Part III.

Sketches. Lots of sketches. A long time ago, we learned (the hard way) that designing should always begin (and sometimes end) in the drawing table. So we started creating in analog until we had a few winner designs that needed some adjustments in the computer. We then turned digital.

Part IV.

Digital creation. With our trusty Calle 13 record playing in the background (music always guides the mood of the art piece) we designed several options for each logo. After we were sure, that we had at least three alternatives that could stand up to anything, we made sure that they communicated Raúl's vision. We used the best visual metaphors and hidden meaning (the good kind), we could come up with. We presented our work.

CIMA: The name is translated from spanish to Mountaintop or peak. In other words "at the top of the game" we took this and added the iconography of a pyramid, which is always pointing towards the sky. Because "The sky is the limit", The typography, needed to feel modern and stylish but had to convey safety and boldness at the same time. The picked design was the bottom-right.

Raúl Colón's Blog: A block or concrete cube is a hard object that can carry almost any weight put on top of it. Besides that, if it is a tri-dimentional object, it shows depth, character. Traduced to a person, we can understand that the person which this logo represents, is strong, dependent, knowledgeable, and straight forward. The picked design was the bottom-right.

Part V.

Client feedback is crucial. And since Raúl is always honest, what we got was the best feedback ever. Surprisingly, not many changes were given to us. Some miscellaneous twitching and that was it. We had our two winning logos.

Part VI.

After we celebrated with a well earned glass of Napa Valley's Sterling Merlot, we adapted the logos for different formats, sizes and colors. When finished, we cued John williams for the ending title sequence with high octane big band music.

All this was done in record time, our client was grateful and happy with his babies, and we were proud of the work accomplished.

Photo Manipulation

Going over the various type of works shown here on RickLipsett.com, we've noticed that nothing has been uploaded as a Photo Manipulation yet.

Immediatly we came to the conclusion that it must also be a part of our site, since is something we do often. So from now on we'll be uploading more and more of those Photoshop Miracles we sometimes perform.

For this first post, we present you an image we produced some months ago to pitch a campaing idea that, even though, the final product was nothing like what we proposed, it was a good exercise for our Photoshop skills.

For this montage, we used separate photos of:
• The RAM truck
• The Background from Dreamstime (Stock Photo)
• Metal hook

The extra smoke, the cracks in the floor and the huge #1 were illustrated.

For the next article on this topic, we'll search fo see if we can find one of those model retouches we've done in the past.

Games of Chance

The people over at Cabrera Auto, sometimes use images to deliver their campaign message. It was with great enthusiasm that we jumped to the occasion to provide several illustrations, when we were approached last month.

The theme was "Games of chance", and so we did several illustrations for their various car dealerships.

Puerto Rico: Artist Collective Paints Pixel By Pixel

This interview was done by Alfredo Richner (Puerto Rico Indie) and was originally published on Global Voices Online, a blog which traduces and reports on blogs from around the world.

Taking their name from their favorite command on computer programs, UNDOdigital started off as a group of friends working for the same ad agency. Feeling the urge to create work outside of the advertising industry to address broader topics as well as some of their individual concerns as digital artists, these (originally) twelve individuals banded together under the UNDO banner in early 2006. By the end of that year they had successfully organized their first show as an artist collective.

Two years later UNDOdigital.com [es] had changed from a basic catalog of the group's work to a full-fledged blog that lets UNDOer's interact with the broader online community, share their creations, promote their exhibits, and expose their readers to all types of art related news, interviews, and works. Rick Lipsett (@ricklipsett), one of the group's creators and editor of the site, explained how members of UNDOdigital “want to achieve a public recognition that art can be produced in the computer. That it is not the computer who does the work, but each artist with his/her own techniques and knowledge of the programs/medium.” We spoke with Rick about the genesis of the UNDOdigital collective and the group's experiences as digital artists in Puerto Rico.

Global Voices (GV): How did the idea for the UNDOdigital artist collective first start taking shape and what were some of the group's first projects?

Rick Lipsett (RL): Back in early 2006, we (the twelve founding members of the collective) were pretty much overwhelmed and tired of making advertisements and never getting the chance to create something for ourselves - something that a client couldn't say ‘NO' to. One of our members (Gerardo Cloquell) had an Art Show as part of El Coro, another group which he belongs to, that some of us attended. It got me thinking: why not use our skills, which were being used for “evil” (advertising work) and use them for “good” (art shows)?

When I got to work the next day, I showed them the name and logo for the collective. It had me up all night. We fell in love with the concept and started off from there. I remember we sat down to have lunch at a Wendy's and threw in some ideas as to what the show could be about. That day we had the basic down for our first four exhibitions.

GV: What issues, topics, and themes has the collective addressed through its art to this date?

RL: The first show was a "Social Critique" to further analyze our social situation through things we did (and perhaps still do) every day. The second was about "Dreams & Nightmares", an idea we've had before UNDO was created. The third, "Author/Artist", consisted of collaborations between a writer and an artist, which is what we do in advertising every day. And finally, "Addictions", which we envisioned as an opportunity to do some soul searching and explore ours and people's vices, besides the obvious ones that the media point to every day.

Although we've had four different art shows, with different themes, we tend to always show a strong sense of awareness of our social situation (in Puerto Rico) - and want to change it.

GV: What made you decide to take the collective online and how is the UNDOdigital blog an extension of the group?

RL: Joseph Garrahan, the animator in our group, suggested I open up a blog to let people in on our little adventures. At first I doubted the idea, but later gave in - and must say it's been one of the best decisions we've made so far. It lets us reach out to an audience that normally would be more difficult to talk to. That, combined with our Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Buzz pages, make a wide net that puts us in touch with more UNDOfans. The blog functions is more or less a reflection of our meetings: we are a group of friends that talk extensively about art. We make jokes. Criticize our surroundings. Make art critiques. Repeat.

GV: Is there a strong artistic presence within the Puerto Rican blogosphere and social media sphere?

RL: Oh yes. There are many blogs dedicated to the arts and even a unique social network called “Coalición de Artistas de Puerto Rico” [es]. Although we are not a part of that community, I must give them credit, for they have achieved a connection between a large number of artists from Puerto Rico - over 500 in all. But just to name a few blogs, there's Fractal [es], Autogiro [es], El naufragio de las palabras [es], Trance Líquido [es], and msa Xperimental Art [es].

GV: Have you found support for the collective's projects online and has the group received any criticism through the blog?

RL: Yes, thankfully we've received much support from the people who've followed us online throughout the years. When we have a show, they promote us and regularly comment on our posts and/or retweet our posts. About the criticism, I remember specially an interview I did a while back with Lisa Ladner. She gave us a few pointers and she was right on. Lisa is the creator of El Status which is a database of (almost) every artist from Puerto Rico. She's done an excellent job cataloging each artist with their biographies, external links, etc.

GV: What are some of the unique challenges that digital artists face in the creation and exhibition of their work?

RL: The creation is always limited by the knowledge of the technology an artist uses. The more they know, the more “fluent” the art piece becomes. Another challenge is proper printing or “output” of the work. We have to be very careful not to print on the wrong surface, or show an animation in a Plasma TV, when it was really developed for a 16″ television. That sort of thing.

GV: As a Puerto Rican artist, what concerns you most about the current economic, social, and political climate in the island?

RL: The atmosphere is very volatile and putrid. That is why we use it as inspiration for many of our art works. People are really tired of all the B.S. our politicians TRY to feed us. Some believe them blindly but every day a few dozen realize something's wrong. We want to help those who need a nudge to realize the truth.

The economy, being how it is right now, makes it harder for established galleries and museums to invest in upcoming talent. And since we're seen as “up and coming” we've had to make detours and present our work in handpicked places whose owners believe in our project. Many have paid no attention to us. Thankfully a few (important ones) have.

Art Nights @ La Respuesta: The Exhibition

A Night of Painting

Yesterday evening, I had the pleasure of being part of a group painting at La Respuesta. It was nothing as I'd expected, and must admit I had a blast. Like everything in this life, there were some things I would've done without, but nevertheless it was great. My deepest thanks to Celso González for inviting me to be a part of these Art Nights. It has been a real pleasure.

Next week (thursday, November 11th, 2010) all the art pieces collecte throughout these Art Nights will be put up for Exhibition. So if you have plans, for that day, I'm afraid you'll have to cancel them and go to see this enormous display of talent.

Group Painting at La Respuesta

This coming thursday, November 4th, 2010 I'll be painting live again at La Respuesta as part of the Closing for the Art Nights series.

The art pieces collected throughout this whole time (September-November) will be put up for an Art Show next week. Opening night will be on thursday, November 11th, 2010. Entrance is free of charge and both events start of at 7pm, boricua time. "Art Nights" have been curated by fellow artist, Celso González.

UNDOdigital, the Digital Artists Community which I belong to, will be presenting our fourth Digital Art Exhibition titled: Addictions (Adicciones) this coming Monday, 15th of november, 2010 starting at 7pm.

We will be presenting our view on what makes us all human: Our Addictions. The artists that will be showing their stuff will be: Aslan, Carlos Pacheco, EKC-FOUR, Elizabeth Colón, Gerardo Cloquell, Kavo, Mario Rodríguez, Patricia Acevedo, Rick Lipsett & Spear.

Calendart 2011 Auction

Yesterday was amazing. We had a blast sharing and talking with everyone who stepped by to comment on my piece at Art Nights @ La Respuesta. Thanks to everyone who dropped by for your support.

Art Nights @ La Respuesta: Updated!

Last Month, our friend Celso González started the weekly live painting performance shows at "La Respuesta". An event he simply called: "Art Nights" A few of our closest colleagues got a chance to performe live, and this coming Thursday, ~~October 14th~~ October 21st, 2010, it's Rick Lipsett chance.

We cordially invite all of you to attend and have a great time while watching Rick, Cacheila, Mero and Angel López Mangual paint Live at La Respuesta.

La Respuesta has become one of the leading independent art Platforms in Old Santurce. Along with Clandestino 787 Studios, Executive Manolo, and others have brought back the Art Scene to Santurce.
