The festival presents a unique combination of advanced music, films, design, digital and new media art exhibitions, community events, urban interventions, workshops, labs and a Symposium on Post-digital Culture.

The 4th edition will take place in London from 3-7 October 2012.

2012 THEME: 'Unfinity'

We live in a unique moment in history, between two rapidly changing worlds. One is the world of decaying political and economic structures and the other is the world of an infinite explosion in technology and information. There are conflicting mindsets in every part of our culture: the contradiction between ubiquitous virtual presence and physical presence creating an identity crisis; the non-hierarchical, organic web structure clashing with hierarchical, non-organic real-world structures; the myth of the individual as a genius vs the power of the crowd and the collaborative practice; the passive and observant attitude set against active participation and co-creation. These opposing forces are placing us in a paradoxical state that we have named Unfinity.

Unfinity is a pull between these poles, a hybrid space. It’s timeless and uncertain. We believe that to ease the state of Unfinity in a human and meaningful way it is crucial to be creative, to experiment, to challenge and take action.

Alpha-ville 2012 invites artists, designers, thinkers, digital and non-digital people to consider, participate in, create and express what will be the next steps for building an alternative future that, we hope, will belong to the people.

KEYWORDS Timeless, Hybrid, Infinity, Code, Data, Body, Physicality, Space, Clould Culture, Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, Experimentation, Unfinished, Future of Art, New Aesthetic, Failure, Prototype, Interactivity, Democratisation, Activism, Hacktivism, Avatars, 3D Printing, Openweb, Smart Cities, Sustainability, Internet of Things, Censorship, Privacy, Identity, Grassroots, Uncertainty, Collaborative Design, DIY, Active Citizenship...

DEADLINES
Submissions close on Friday 22nd June 2012
Moving Image Submissions will close on Sunday 15th July 2012
Submission fee: £5
http://www.alpha-ville.co.uk/submissions/

Proposals are accepted for the following categories:
Music/Sound
AV Performances
Lab, Hack Event or Meet-up
Moving Image
Public Interventions
New Media Art/Multimedia Projects
Critical: Talks, Panels, Workshops, Presentations, Academic Papers

Animation Artist - Residency Opportunity, Paintings in Hospitals

Paintings in Hospitals is inviting applications from animation artists who wish to develop their practice through working in the healthcare environment and collaborating with young patients. The residency will be based in the paediatric unit of St Mary’s Hospital, London and will take place over a period of six months from October 2012.

Paintings in Hospitals is a leading arts in health organisation in the UK. We use art to create welcoming and uplifting environments that improve health, well-being and the patient experience. Each year our work benefits an estimated 1.8 million patients, visitors and members of staff across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We are looking for artists whose work is rooted in the exploration and experimentation of animation. During the residency, the selected artist will engage with in-patients from St Mary’s Hospital Paediatric Unit and produce an animated film. It’s a search for purpose, sense of curiosity, the
inevitability of isolation and fear of death.

Call For Artists' Projects: Generative & Algorithmic Art, Leonardo Electronic Almanac

Generative & Algorithmic Art, Leonardo Electronic Almanac

Senior editors for this issue: Lanfranco Aceti, Meredith Hoy, and Kris Paulsen.

In his essay “What is Generative Art? Complexity Theory as a Context for Art Theory,” Philip Galanter provocatively suggests that “generative art may be as old as art itself.” [1] The programmatic, mathematical patterns that appear in Islamic tile work, Tibetan mandalas, and textiles from around the globe (and particularly from Jacquard’s early 19th century punch card loom) all exhibit the qualities of generative art: they are produced by preset instructions or procedural rules that dictate the forms and structures they might take. Defining a generative mode of production in its most general terms, Galanter writes, “Generative art refers to any art practice where the artist uses a system, such as a set of natural language rules, a computer program, a machine, or other procedural invention, which is set into motion with some degree of autonomy contributing to or resulting in a completed work of art.” [2] Depending on the technology implemented by the artist and the material form of the finished artwork, there can exist wide variations in the degree of the system’s autonomy, the impact of artistic intention and influence, and the complexity or predictability of the system used to generate the artwork. A technology can be as simple as a written set of natural language instructions resulting in a wall drawing in graphite or as complex as a string of computationally executable code that manifests in a spectacular array of screen-based graphics. The degree of artistic intervention in the final product effects the extent to which a system can be defined as functioning autonomously; in a true generative system, the rules of the program are produced by the artist, set into motion, and then left to develop, often in ways that could not be predicted by the artist due to the incursion of random variables.

This special issue of Leonardo Electronic Almanac seeks to investigate the long history of generative and algorithmic art, from the historical predecessors mentioned above, to contemporary computational artworks. We invite proposals for articles examining generative and algorithmic art practices from the ancient world to the present day, and artists’ projects and pictorial essays engaging with these procedures and structures. Submissions might investigate issues of authorial control, predictability and unpredictability, chance and “aleatoric” methods of art making, or might propose theoretical and philosophical explorations of the concepts of hardware and software, the materiality of generative systems, video feedback as a generative system, the relationship between generative art and cinematic practices, or the historically expansive and ever expanding range of technologies capable of executing generative systems.

[1] Philip Galanter, “What is Generative Art? Yet both afford surprisingly deep levels of analysis. How might models of critical gameplay inspire deeper critical reflection on issues of sex, and vice-versa?

What is the history of sexual games, particularly in the pre-digital era? What were the fairground and peepshow precursors in titillation? What was the design history of the “love tester” machine?

Why are game metaphors so prevalent in narratives of sexual conquest, and how did popular games in history influence the thinking of contemporary lovers? What can we learn about Roman gaming culture from Ovid's Ars Amatoria? What determines the many definitions of "cheating" in each of those contexts? How do the procedural rhetorics of modern game design encourage objectification of women?

How might contemplative gaming teach us to free ourselves from the tyranny of the climax?
How does the concept of the 'magic circle' in games coincide with safe spaces for sexual exploration? How do players act out transgressions of sex and gender expectations within the relatively safer spaces of games? What can we learn about social scripts and expectations from looking at society through a ludological lens?

What is the relationship of sex and games to the recent 'non-human turn' in arts, science, and philosophy? How might games engender empathy and understanding towards the non-human? What is the technological equivalent of Alan Moore's plant-sex issue of Swamp Thing? Could a game help you contemplate how a mantis fucks, or what it feels like for a fern to spore?

Beyond the simple human-to-human interfaces of the now-almost-quaint developments of sex machines and teledildonic, how might game design interact with biometrics and haptic feedback to create entirely new techno-sexual situations? Game-based learning and medical rehabilitation has been used in the past for stroke victims and the disabled to re-learn their bodies; how might those same techniques allow further bodily exploration towards positive pleasure? How much might BDSM simulators borrow from virtual pet trainers? How is predicament bondage like game design, and what can the two learn from one another?

If we are headed towards the 'gamepocalypse' envisioned by Jesse Schell, how might that affect our sex lives and our sexualities?

Is sex in danger of gamification?

If so, how can we stop it?

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Call for Submissions, Deadline: July 1, 2012

Please send submissions to office AT monochrom.at

http://www.monochrom.at/arse-elektronika

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

MA in Contemporary Performance Making

The MA in Contemporary Performance Making at Brunel University in West London is for creators of performance works, including Digital, Directing, Writing, Installation and Solo Performance.

It is a one-year intensive combination of taught studies in practice and theory, and independent projects.

Brunel University is the foremost technological university in the UK. The independent study structure available at Harvestworks aligns well with the Transart model of one year projects and self-directed study supported by advisors.

Within this partnership artists will have the opportunity to get technical support for their MFA and PhD projects including up to 20 hours of custom private tutorials, one-on-one instruction allowing students to explore the tools necessary to complete their individual projects as well as unlimited labtime in HW’s computer lab, support by assistant teachers as well as a presentation of the final project at Harvestworks. These independent studies typically last a month but depending on the project, can last for up to six months.

Transart students interested in working with Harvestworks in this capacity will send a proposal to Harvestworks and Transart which includes: 300-600 word descriptions of the project, what technology it should include and what kind of support they will need from Harvestwork’s staff. This is an open invitation without deadlines. Transart Insitute will cover 50% of the cost (up to $900) for this pilot project to ensure that students learn new technologies essential to their projects quickly and efficiently, keeping the focus in the program on the project itself and to encourage students to expand their understanding of the technologies which can best communicate their work and/or enable them to find the right contributors for collaborative projects.

THE A.I.R. These residencies are supported by the Kulturkontakt Nord Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme.

Ptarmigan is a transdisciplinary cultural platform operating in both Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland. For three years, Ptarmigan has organised events, residencies, workshops, performances and other projects that span across various spheres of art, music, performance, humanities, and other more nebulous fields. Our focus is on event-driven cultural production that’s simultaneously inclusive and unusual.

Who is eligible
Any legal resident of the Nordic or Baltic countries, excluding Estonia. This means: Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, the Åland Islands, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania.

What we are looking for
Your residency is a project; your proposal should clearly describe what you hope to do with two months in Tallinn. We look to produce projects that excite us and occupy unique cultural space. We like to see things that are active and lively, and fit in well with what we do. At Ptarmigan, the joy is in collaboration, being together, and expanding perspectives. We’re inclined towards ideas that offer some sort of educational component, and a chance for the public to be involved, while being experimental in nature. Participation and engagement with our existing projects is also a bonus - many of our regular projects benefit from guests, and there are also opportunities to work in our partner spaces, such as Tiib in Tallinn and the Score Store Kiosk in Helsinki.

You can always take a look at our past events, projects and residencies on our websites to get a sense of what we are interested in. In general, if your project is ‘spend two months painting/sculpting/video editing/whatever to create a gallery exhibition’, we aren’t likely to select you. If you’re looking to create interactive, psychogeographic maps of Tallinn’s secrets/animals/vertical objects/whatever through a series of workshops, tours, and other interventions -- now we’re listening.

What you get
If chosen, your travel to and from Tallinn will be paid for (up to €400). You will be accommodated in a small apartment within a short walking distance of the Ptarmigan project space which will be fully paid for. In addition to this you will receive a stipend of 1400€ for your two months stay, pending requirements (see below). Any living costs (food, materials, etc.) will come from this stipend. In Ptarmigan, you will be given a 21m2 room to use as a studio, if desired. (There are some limitations in what you can do with this studio, primarily sound/volume-related, but otherwise it’s yours). Ptarmigan additionally operates a small, experimental visual art space called Tiib - this space is available to use as a gallery/exhibition space if desired. You will be asked to visit Helsinki at least once to present, perform, or otherwise engage with our Finnish side - ferry travel and accommodation will be covered for this trip.

Ptarmigan is an artist-run space that is all-volunteer, and our organisers will do their best to help with your project. This includes local promotion and marketing, general local know-how (including practical information and cultural networking), and anything else we can do.

Other requirements
If you are not a legal, tax-paying resident of one of the aforementioned countries, then you are not eligible for this residency, which is funded by KK Nord only for mobility between Nordic and Baltic countries. If you have a good idea for Ptarmigan anyway but are not a resident of these countries, please don’t hesitate to propose anyway -- but understand that we do not have any financial support for residencies beyond the Nordic/Baltic programme.

The residency, as required by KK Nord, is for a minimum of two months. We are generally budgeted for exactly that time, though a few extra days over is okay. If you have an idea for a longer project then please describe it in your proposal.

The stipend is broken into two monthly payments of 700€ each. This is intended to cover all living costs and materials. To receive this stipend, you must spend 85% of your stay in Tallinn (though your visit to Helsinki will not count against this).

Ptarmigan is a very social, public-focused space, and if your project does not directly engage with the public, then we ask that you will open your working space up for a few hours per week to anyone who might be interested in meeting you and seeing what you are working on. This is negotiable and primarily symbolic anyway.

How to apply, deadlines, and other administrivia
To apply for Ptarmigan’s Nordic/Baltic residency programme, please use our general-purpose proposal form, and choose “Tallinn residencies” as the “existing project”. Our application form is at http://ptarmigan.ee/proposals/new and we prefer that you apply in English.

We will be selecting three residencies in 2012, with a minimum duration of two-months each. Please specify clearly on the proposal form when you would be most interested in coming, ex. “July-August”, “November-December”, etc.

The deadline for this year’s residency applications is 1 June. We will inform all applicants no later than 15 June.

Low-Res MFA & First Studio PhD in the US

Transart is offering an international low-residency studio PhD course of studies: The Degree is offered for creative work (practice-based research). Transart residencies are a meeting place for cultural exchange. Transart students and alumni will converge for the summer residency from areas as diverse as Thailand, Egypt, Italy, Pakistan, Iceland, Croatia, Ethiopia, Canada, Costa Rica, the UK, and the US.

For both students and faculty the time at Transart is a transformational experience. Performer and painter Nicole Stager wrote: “This program has changed my life in profound ways. My art practice is more informed, better articulated, more open, more thoughtful, more grounded in theory.” New York based artist Virgil Wong found “The community I’ve become a part of through Transart is already much more immersive than what I’ve developed in ten years of living and working as an artist in New York City”. Photographer and performer Angelika Rinnhofer found that “to work independently can pose a challenge but it also offers freedom and flexibility. Since a large number of students are accomplished artists and earn a living, Transart’s concept is ideal to work toward a degree and to expand one’s artistic career in addition to having a job.” Faculty Michael Bowdidge: "Undertaking a PhD has lead me to a much deeper understanding of the nature of my practice."

Transart Faculty
comes from a wide range of academic and artistic backgrounds as well as geographic locations. Transart advisors have included Alec Soth, Alison Nordström, and Cate Rimmer among many others. Studio faculty include international artists working with photography, film/video, sound, performance, dance and choreography, drawing, sculpture, intervention, and installation. Current theoretical areas of expertise include curatorial work, African diaspora, interface technologies, digital arts, continental philosophy, media, social studies in colonialism, capitalism and tourism, word and image relationships, and contemporary asian art history. The boundaries of enclosures and spaces are no longer the rigid and defined perimeters they once were. The browser, the mobile camera/screen are new enabling simulations the user canexploit to navigate alternative pathways, to experience new modes of expression and to participate in global cultural exchange.

This is reflected online and on the street. In our political discourse and our social interactions. And it is most visible when repatriated via the mainstream media and traditional news editorials coupled with wild proclamations of “new freedoms” accompanied by “real change”.

Yet what has really changed? What do these new counter measures look like on the ground? Where do the subversions play out? What new questions are we asking of our environment and of ourselves?

In the same evolving moment new far less visible forms of control are emerging that use these very same technological platforms: surveillance networks, social media, data mining algorithms, privacy interventions, sophisticated image gathering techniques and drone technologies. These aggregators of data and network traffic are rapidly translating our private, public and social lives into valuable sets of relational data – re-writing the notion of identity, weaving new paradigms of control.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Call Out

SCREENGRAB is now entering its fourth year with an international call out for the AUS$5000 New Media Arts Prize and the companion exhibition in August 2012 for short listed applicants. Which means it is time for Chicago Urban Art Retreat's Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer Art Show.

Here are the guidelines for artists to follow when submitting art for the show: art should be about serious issues the LGBT community is facing. Please remember that children come to the gallery. The Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center programs are about social justice issues. This a great opportunity to inform and educate people about important issues LGBTQ folks face all the time. Along with your art, please submit 1000+ words about the importance of your issue (the words can be anonymous)— these will go into a notebook associated with the show for attendees to contribute to as well. For instance, maybe your art is about civil rights; write a narrative about the civil rights issues LGBTQ people face. Other art ideas include how LGBTQ people are viewed, LQBTQ parenting, LGBTQ people wanting to help their dying partner etc. Give careful consideration to the theme of the show and the theme of your art and narrative. We are, of course, especially interested in positive images of LGBTQ people and the community.
Artists and non-artists, LGBTQ folks, interested in showing their work in this June 2012 gallery show should email images of their work to contact@urbanartretreat.com.
This show will open at the Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center with a reception on June 2 at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, and will be shown all throughout June, closing on June 30 at 4 pm.
Artists should plan to deliver their art to the gallery on May 26 between 11 am-4 pm, or make an appointment via email to deliver art at a different time through May 31. After the conclusion of the show, artist may pick up their work at 4 pm on June 30, or by appointment through July 3. Art remaining at CUARC after this date will face storage fees.
Outsider art is welcome. Artists from other states and countries are especially welcome to submit art for consideration. Any person interested in making art to be included in the show may attend our on-site art studio on Saturday mornings, 11 am-1 pm between now and May 26. No experience needed. Art instruction and materials are free. RSVP necessary in advance by phone, 773-542-9126, leaving your name, phone number and date you wish to attend.
Curating the show is Dianna C. Long, assisted by members of Out Artists Network. Meet Up may help curate art into the show for June. Do you know someone who is LGBTQ and should have art in the gallery show in June? Ask them to send images of their art via email.
As artists in our community at CUARC and in Chicago, it is important to spread the word about this important showing. We ask you to make an effort to tell those you know informing them about this opportunity to open minds to LGBTQ issues.
Thank you, and we can't wait to see your work!

"Art Without Object" Creative Coding Workshop - Saturday

Creative coder Tims Gardner is doing a workshop this Saturday on creative coding and moving beyond the object-oriented paradigm.

http://kitchentable32.eventbrite.com/

Anyone interested in creative visual programming should find this extremely interesting; we'll be using the newish functional language Clojure with a wonderful graphics library called Quil.

Ultimately the class is about how to get ideas out of your head and onto the screen (and elsewhere) with the minimum amount of programming hoops to jump through. Can an absence from the physical world resonate with the virtual presence, or vice-versa? Through an interdisciplinary perspective, SIGGRAPH Asia 2012 Art Gallery: Echo is seeking evidence of digital activities in the physical world and the impact of natural phenomena in cyberspace. Artistic and scientific explorations will “echo” between digital and analog spaces and fabricate a hybrid model, in which, the duality merges into a uniformed and ubiquitous state. The exploration continues this fall with a juried competition and online exhibition.

FLEFF invites submissions of new media art, tactical media, radical cartography, computer games, locative media, and interactive video for Distributed Microtopias, a juried competition and online exhibition for which one prize of USD250 will be awarded.

Micro means small, utopia identifies imagined, cooperative systems of harmony.

Microtopias ask us to imagine the world otherwise, without constraints and limitations, to improve the immediate environment. Microtopias congregate people, ideas, and practices on a local, sustainable, decentralized scale. Microtopias catalyzes social interaction, collective participation, and changes in the landscape. Microtopias transform the world by making policed boundaries more permeable.

If utopia resides nowhere, microtopias emerge everywhere. If utopia suggests perfection, microtopia defines adaptation. If utopia is remote, microtopia mesmerizes. Utopias never change; microtopias never stay the same. Tactical, temporary, disruptive, distilled, microtopias show us how to inhabit the world in a better way. Ephemeral and transitory openings, microtopias map the realm of the possible, an invitation to live in a shared world. Rather than a grand narrative and a large scale, microtopias propose temporary, dynamic, shared worlds, a field of forces shaped on a sustainable scale.

Distributed Microtopias seeks projects that run across distributed networks like the Internet to provoke and educate from remote locations on a sustainable scale, that expand knowledge rather than contain it, and that invite participation and exploration, and that unhinge familiar habits of thinking to envision new possibilities for historical and cultural clarity.

Enrico Aditjondro of EngageMedia (Indonesia) will serve as the juror for the competition with FLEFF Digital Curator Dale Hudson of New York University Abu Dhabi (UAE/USA).

Please send submissions with a brief bio in an email to distributed.microtopias@gmail.com no later than 15 August 2012. REPLY TO THE ADDRESS BELOW.

If you are interested in being considered for the show and getting your work shown to a nationwide audience as well as being a part of a new, interesting concept,
reply to the email below w/ the information requested.
And pass it on to anyone you think might be interested.
If it goes to series, they'll be looking for more and more artists so could be a great opportunity.

Also, you'll have to come to LA for the casting.

title: DESTINATION: INSPIRATION

Encore Road Productions is looking for an artist(s) who will be featured in a pilot project for a reality program, yet to be titled. The theme of the show will focus upon the re-discovery of small towns in America through the eyes of an artist(s). Our main character(s) are looking for NEW INSPIRATION for their work in some of the more hidden and unusual areas of our country. The artist would ideally be fluent in more than one art form, ie: a musician who also paints, or a photographer who also sculpts etc. Actors are ideal in the hopes of a charismatic up front person but we are not limiting ourselves to just actors. Also certainly, any of your celebrity clients who may be interested in hosting such a program would be ideal. Again, think of folks who are talented in more than one medium. Prototypes would be Huell Howser meets Arlo Guthrie or someone certainly with the charm, wit and multi talents of a Steve Martin. We love banjo/guitarists etc.! The artist will also have his/her work showcased weekly…and perhaps, down the line, housed in an on-line museum of ‘Grassroots Impressionism’. We are also considering a duo to host so any ideas in that realm within your client lists are welcome. This is an on the road experience as well so talent must enjoy travel and discovering new places.

We are looking for artists willing to take this journey with us.

REPLY TO: Dan Rosenfeld dbflyer2000@gmail.com

in your email include:
1. your phone number,
2. a link to your portfolio online
3. the medium or mediums you work in, (multiple discipline artists encouraged)
4. if not represented online, your exhibition history for the last 3 years or pertinent projects or experience (a little bit about yourself)

DIY 9:2012 – CALL FOR PROPOSALS

AND is collaborating with Live Art Development Agency (LADA) and others to participate in DIY 9 – professional development by artists for artists.
Deadline for proposals: 12:00, Mon 14 May 2012

DIY is an opportunity for artists working in Live Art to conceive and run unusual training and professional development projects for other artists.

We want to hear from you if have an idea for an exciting, innovative and idiosyncratic Live Art professional development project that offers something new and is geared to the eclectic and often unusual needs of artists whose practices are grounded in challenging and unconventional approaches, forms and concepts.

LADA are planning to support eleven DIY projects that will take place between August and October 2012. Due to its success we will be offering another unique opportunity for an artist to be in residence on a canal boat on and around the Manchester and Pennine waterways in summer 2012.

RESIDENCY DETAILS

This residency will be based on a Canal Boat on the Manchester and Pennine Waterways, Northwest England for approximately four weeks in August and September 2012. Accommodation will be provided on a canal boat for four weeks, full training on boat handling and maintenance will be provided at the beginning of the residency. A route will be mapped out in collaboration with the resident artists and partner organisations.

The handling of a canal boat requires two people, therefore the residency is open to a minimum of two people. There may be a possibility to provide accommodation for more participants, so the residency encourages applications from collaborating artists, collectives and families (fees and stipend remain the same).

The following budget is available to the resident artist (to be managed by AND):
•	An artists' fee and stipend of £1500 GBP (to include any materials and/or production and living costs)
•	Travel expenses to the UK of up to £1000 GBP

HOW TO APPLY

For more details and information on how to apply please visit http://www.andfestival.org.uk/event/canal-boat-residency-open-call

Deadline for Applications: 17:00 Fri 25 May 2012

Interviews will be held the w/c 11 June at Cornerhouse, Manchester or via skype.

For an informal discussion prior to submitting an application contact Ruth McCullough, AND Festival Producer residency@andfestival.org.uk

OPen Call for Moving Image

Each year AND makes an open call for moving image submissions for inclusion in the festival programme and this year is no exception. PIIM’s mission is to advance the field of Knowledge Visualization through academic and commercial pursuits.

PIIM researchers and staff disseminate their expertise in information categorization, knowledge representation, information taxonomy development, information logic and raking/scoring, knowledge visualization, and Graphic User Interface (GUI) and User Experience Design (UXD) by developing powerful tools and methods for decision makers and analysts. PIIM’s work seeks to increase decision maker and analyst cognition of complex data sets via efficient experiences and visualizations.
In both its own research and its engagements with government agencies, corporations and other organizations, PIIM pushes the boundaries of information, engineering and visual design to develop new ways of thinking about information – and to build and deliver corresponding real world solutions.

For more information, visit http://piim.newschool.edu

Masters of Science by Research in Interdisciplinary Creative Practices

The MSc by Research in Interdisciplinary Creative Practice is a programme of study that engages emerging practices across diverse disciplines in the creative arts, humanities and physical and social sciences.

The programme is predicated on the understanding that the convergent nature of Information and Communication Technologies has facilitated the adoption of methods from across disciplines but recognises that practitioners often require a deeper appreciation and experience of such methods to assure their ability to undertake such practice.

The programme also recognises that potential students may have completed their initial studies in an academic domain and seek to situate that subject knowledge within creative practice. Based in a lively studio environment, drawing on resources within the University and Edinburgh College of Art (eca), the programme introduces students to a wide range of disciplines and associated methods within a critical framework that encourages reflective experimentation.

Students are encouraged to work autonomously and collaboratively and are offered the opportunity to study with others in subject specialisms from across the rich and diverse courses offered by the University and eca. This provision is negotiated with the prospective student from the outset to ensure an appropriate fit and the viability of the overall programme of the student's study

BWPWAP - transmediale 2013

Back When Pluto Was a Planet

transmediale 2013 - Call for Works
Deadline: 30 June 2012

transmediale is Berlin's annual festival for cultural activities crossing art, culture and technology.
For its 26th edition, from 29 January to 3 February 2013 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, transmediale once again calls for contributions.

Entries are now open for the transmediale 2013 programme which will consist of installations, film and video screenings, workshops, performances, talks and discussions. Even though transmediale is always interested in works exploring new technologies, either as a theme or as form, no genres or media are excluded. The exhibition programme is particularly oriented towards artworks that explore ambiguous and problematic relationships to technology and challenge common perceptions of it as a rational or creative tool. The video programme is devoted to contemporary artistic video works and experimental film screenings with historical references. Live audiovisual manifestations of old and new media form the main focus of our performance programme. The workshop and talk programme explores the critical dimension of networking, hacktivism, media theory and the politics of technological development.

2013 Thematic framework
BWPWAP - Back When Pluto Was a Planet
The Imaginary Museum I

Can impossible and unrealistic uses and abuses of technology be translated into new cultural imaginaries? Into networks out of place and out of time? Like BWPWAP!?

Back When Pluto Was a Planet: with this title transmediale 2013 will explore the simultaneous displacement and invention that takes place in cultural processes mediated by technology.

BWPWAP is a popular net culture acronym referring to the cancellation of Pluto's planetary status in 2006 and is commonly used whenever one wants to point out that a statement or opinion is resting on no longer valid data. It can also be read as the recollection of a poetic imagination rendered obsolete by new technological knowledge paradigms. The decision to degrade Pluto's status in the planetary system is a testimony to how new technologies and discourses decontextualise networks that were once thought to be stable and lead to recontextualisations that are reshaping the very imaginary of culture.

transmediale 2013 calls upon artists, users and theorists to contribute to the creation of new cultural imaginaries, where behaving like BWPWAP is a dissident creative act. On the one hand we are looking for works that interrogate processes of techno-cultural displacement: outsourcing, digital labor, user-generated content and prod-usage as phenomena that work to redefine cultural production. But equally we are interested in processes of invention: when networked collaboration and participation have become compulsory components of a new cultural industry, what are the critical technological practices? We recognise the user as a highly inventive figure occupying this techno-cultural landscape with all sorts of unruly and irritated behaviour, far beyond the straight-jacket of the notion of “the ideal user.” In the digital business world, where the user and not the customer is king, what kind of user agencies exist and how can we grasp the complex games of adaptation and appropriation that have unfolded within online as well as offline user cultures?

Selection process
Even though the themes of the transmediale are set by the curatorial team, the focus of the individual programmes are further developed in relation to the works submitted in response to this call for works. In this way we strive to create a dialogue between the thematic ideas and current artistic practice. The final programme of the festival eventually consists of a mix of invited participants, projects of our all-year platform (reSource - transmedial culture berlin) and contributions selected through the call. The review process lasts until the end of August.

In mid September, a list of the entries selected through the call for works will be published on http://www.transmediale.de. No further notification will be given to those applicants who were not selected.

Keywords
the imaginary, classification, nightmares of participation, dematerialisation, decontextualisation, shifts, alternative temporalities, semantic networks, WFIOTN (We Found It On The Net), appropriation, out of place, textual economies, critical literacies, taxonomy, rematerialisation, language games, recontextualisation , displacement, irritated memories, categorization, invention, user culture, lusers, lamers, prod-users, outsourcing, machine bastards, anachronisms, fictive materialities, reemergence from nowhere, intergalactic fantasies, delocalisation, telework, WHYUWWM (We Hope You Understand What We Mean)

1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME2012)

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
======================

((( MUME 2012 )))
1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation
http://www.metacreation.net/mume2012/

Held at the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and
Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE'12)
Stanford, Palo Alto, California, USA
October 9, 2012

----------------------

Deadline for Paper and Demo Submissions:
*** July 6, 2012 ***

======================

We are delighted to announce the 1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME2012) to be held October 9, 2012, in conjunction with the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE'12).

Thanks to continued progress in artistic and scientific research, a new possibility is emerging in our musical relationship with technology: Generative Music or Musical Metacreation, the design and use of computer music systems which are "creative on their own". Metacreation involves using tools and techniques from artificial intelligence, artificial life, and machine learning, themselves often inspired by cognitive and life sciences. Musical Metacreation suggests exciting new opportunities to enter creative music making: discovery and exploration of novel musical styles and content, collaboration between human performers and creative software "partners", and design of systems in gaming and entertainment that dynamically generate or modify music.

The workshop will bring together artists, practitioners and researchers interested in developing software and systems that autonomously (or interactively) recognize, learn, represent, complete, accompany, compose or interpret music. In particular, emphasis will be put on systems with real-time aspects, since these are relevant to both art and entertainment communities.

Topics
======

We encourage paper and demo submissions on topics including the following:
* Novel representations of musical information
* Systems for autonomous or interactive music composition
* Systems for automatic generation of expressive musical interpretation
* Systems for learning or modelling music style and structure
* Systems for intelligently remixing or recombining musical material
* Advances or applications of AI, machine learning, and statistical techniques for musical purposes
* Advances or applications of evolutionary computing or agent and multiagent-based systems for musical purposes
* Computational models of human musical creativity
* Techniques and systems for supporting human musical creativity
* Online musical systems (i.e. systems with a real-time element)
* Adaptive music in video games
* Methodologies for, and studies reporting on, evaluation of musical metacreations
* Emerging musical styles and approaches to music production and performance involving the use of AI systems

Format and Submissions
======================

The workshop will be a one day event including:
* Presentations of TECHNICAL PAPERS
* Presentations of POSITION PAPERS relevant to Musical Metacreation and its future
* Presentations of DEMONSTRATIONS
* One or more PANEL SESSIONS (potential topics include international collaborations, evaluation methodologies, industry engagement, generative music in art vs. games)

For complete details on attendance, submissions and formatting, please visit the workshop website:
*** http://www.metacreation.net/mume2012/ ***

Important Dates
===============

Submission deadline: July 6, 2012
Notification date: August 3, 2012
Accepted Author CRC due to AAAI Press: August 17, 2012
Workshop date: October 9, 2012

Workshop Organizers
===================

Dr. Philippe Pasquier (Workshop Chair)
School of Interactive Arts + Technology (SIAT)
Simon Fraser University

Dr. Arne Eigenfeldt
The School for the Contemporary Arts
Simon Fraser University

Dr. Oliver Bown
Design Lab, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning
The University of Sydney

----------------------

http://www.metacreation.net/mume2012/

======================
