This exhibition seeks to present a range of artistic practice, including responsible and irresponsible practices, on the premise that revealing/sharing these will enable us to examine the kinds of creative behavior we (artists) model in community.

This will be an exhibition of documentation primarily, as we intend to emphasize artistic practice over products. Artists interested in exhibition should prepare documentation of practice, of work, or of theoretical work. “Practice” should be understood as artistic practice, studio practice, or methodology, and works that are currently in-progress. “Work” may include conventional pieces like sculptural objects, paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, etc., and less conventional pieces of experimental, installation, performance, interdisciplinary, and electronic media. “Theoretical work” may include artistic conceptions, works that could be conceived but may never be realized, or works that have been proposed but not executed. Submitted documentation will be included in the exhibition program. Select artists may be invited to include executed/executable works.

Please direct all questions to Nina Caporale at nina@aesthetic.ohio.edu

//Deadline for Submission
February 1, 2008

//Submission Materials:
• Artist’s statement in 200-900 words. BY JUDD MORRISSEY
& LORI TALLEY

Watertown, MA -- Eastgate Systems has announced the publication of new
hypertext, MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN. by Judd Morrissey and Lori Talley.

http://www.eastgate.com/catalog/Captain.html

In MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN., Morrissey and Talley combine dynamic text,
links, and motion graphics to create a deep and inviting textual environment
inspired by the first airplanes.

The work, made with Macromedia's Flash authoring software, uses the computer
and hypertext to create an innovative, specifically digital kind of concrete
poetry. Text and images transform themselves with the click of a mouse,
appearing and disappearing on the screen. MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN. also
capitalizes on the computer screen's malleability. Unlike ink on a page,
pixels may be programmed to change on the fly, a flexibility that has
allowed Morrissey and Talley to create animated, dynamic poetry that breaks
with traditional print conventions, such as fixed letters and the
organization of the printed page.

"While the work strongly evokes familiar conventions of
concrete poetry, Morrissey and Talley have created a uniquely digital poetic
language, one that is inconceivable in a less plastic medium, such as
print," says Diane Greco, acquisitions editor at Eastgate Systems.

A lost pilot, the eponymous captain, forms the nucleus of the work. In
keeping with the aviation theme, Morse code is frequently invoked; for
instance, an entire section of the work shows reams of dots and dashes
marching across the screen. In another part of the work, lines of white
letters scroll backwards on a black background, recalling the mirror-writing
of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Advance praise for MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN., has been rolling in. Robert
Coover, author of _Pricksongs & Descants_ and Professor of English and
Creative Writing at Brown University, calls CAPTAIN "already a classic in
its form." Robert Arellano, author of _Fast Eddie King of the Bees_ and the
celebrated Web novel _Sunshine '69_, says "CAPTAIN is one of the loveliest
pieces to come across my desktop in years."

Eastgate is similary bullish about CAPTAIN's prospects, and for good reason.
"Advance sales were very strong," comments Greco, "and I fully expect
classroom adoption, especially in colleges and universities, to be high as
well. It's a rich, wonderfully teachable work, especially
for students in literature, communications and media studies who are
developing an appreciation of the materiality of all media."

MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN. also represents a significant departure for
Eastgate. The packaging was professionally designed by Terri Chang of the
Parsons School of Design in New York City, a move that breaks with
Eastgate's former practice of designing their packaging in-house. "We're
very excited about the chance to get some fresh perspective on packaging,"
says Greco. "Terri's design was a breakthrough for us -- you hold the piece
in your hand, and you realize the importance of having a beautiful real
object to go with the virtual one."

http://www.eastgate.com/catalog/Captain.html

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN.:

"Taking verbal and visual metaphors from the early days of flight to the
hypermedia skies of these early days of electronic literature, MY NAME IS
CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN. is, even at the moment of its publication, a classic in
its form. At times playful, at times somber, MY NAME IS CAPTAIN, CAPTAIN.
is, at all points of the compass, a compelling and intriguing read." --
Robert Coover, author of _Pricksongs & Descants_

"You don't need to know Morse code to enjoy the genius in this triumph of
literary design. With their flirtatious interface, Judd Morrissey and Lori
Talley have built more than a poem -- they've built a pioneering poetics
based on animation, recombination, and exploration. MY NAME IS CAPTAIN,
CAPTAIN. just might make "dit dah dit dah" a household word." -- Bobby
Arellano, author of _Sunshine '69_ and _Fast Eddie, King of the Bees_

http://www.eastgate.com/catalog/Captain.html

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

JUDD MORRISSEY is a writer and developer of digital literature. He received
his MFA from Brown University . His work has been widely and internationally
exhibited and reviewed by online versions of publications such as the New
York Times and the New Republic.

LORI TALLEY is currently teaching in the Sound and Art and Technology
Studies Departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She
received her BA at Bard College in the experimental Music Program Zero under
the mentorship of composer and theorist Benjamin Boretz, and later went on
to earn her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a sound
composer and creator of electronic literature, her work has been widely
recognized and included in several international exhibitions including
ISEA97, P0es1s: International Exhibition of Digital Poetry, and DAC2001.

ABOUT EASTGATE SYSTEMS

Hailed as "the primary source for serious hypertext" by Robert Coover in the
New York Times Book Review, Eastgate Systems publishes hypertexts --
interlinked, interactive work, both fiction and nonfiction, specifically
written to be read on the computer. Eastgate Systems publishes fiction, poetry,
and non-fiction, specializing in the world of literature beyond the confines
of paper, and that would not normally appear, or could appear, in printed
form.

PUBLICATION INFORMATION

My Name Is Captain, Captain.
by Judd Morrissey and Lori Talley
Eastgate Systems
ISBN 1-884511-41-4
(CD for Windows and Macintosh)
$25.00

http://www.eastgate.com/catalog/Captain.html

PRESS INFORMATION

Please direct requests for press kits, review copies, and all other press
inquiries to: Diane Greco, dgreco@eastgate.com

You have received this email because you're on Eastgate's press list. Eight artists will work in collaboration with the curators to make new work based on an historical art object, event or proposal.

This exhibition is NOT an open submission exhibition but the curators would like to hear from artists who may be interested in the concept. We are already in discussions with several artists but are still open to new artists. A BRIEF initial idea, response or proposal can be emailed to either Alan Phelan or Jane Speller over the next month. We will review these ideas and request more detailed proposals and documentation. Final decisions will be made in late June when we will have a clearer idea of the budget in response to grant applications.

Please DO NOT send large email attachments of image files. We are more interested in an exchange of ideas and thoughts at present. Thank you.

This site also begins an archive of images and essays from annual exhibitions starting in 1996 organised and curated by OutArt. The catalogues published for each exhibition were given away free of charge and as a result only a few remain from some years. All the texts from the catalogues will eventually be posted to the site.

No Respect

NO RESPECT will be a temporary public art exhibition which asks artists to respond to projects by international artists in Ireland which were never successfully realised. At this stage of the programme, the Tate in Space website is the key route through which members of the public can follow developments, witness the architectural process, and follow the notional Tate Satellite orbiting earth every 92.56 minutes. The site explores ways in which a Tate in Space might extend visitor experience and engage new audiences. Tate in Space online will act as an arena for debate and reflection on the nature of art in space, raising questions about cultural and institutional ambition and the very human desires to observe and communicate.See http://www.tate.org.uk/space/

Alongside these new works Tate has commissioned supporting texts. Paul Bonaventura will examine Susan Collins’s project. Josie Berry will provide a contextual overview for the works. These texts will be available on the Tate site on 1 July 2002.

Susan Collins:
Biography – http://www.susan-collins.net/SACbio.html

Tate commision- Border Xing by Heath Bunting

Heath Bunting will develop a new work in a series that is currently underway at www.irational.org/borderXing/. In this series, he carries out border crossings in Europe, locating specific national boundaries and undertaking walks that traverse them without interruption from customs, immigration, or border police. The walks are documented with notes and photographs. Bunting’s walks recall the work of Hamish Fulton and Richard Long and can be seen as contributing to the tradition in conceptual art that takes as its subject themes of landscape and space. Crucially though, these walks question political, economical and juridical aspect of travel. The work will continue to develop throughout the year.

Tate has also commissioned a supporting text by Florian Schneider which will be on the Tate site from 1st July. http://www.tate.org.uk

Heath Bunting:
Biography – http://www.irational.org/cgi-bin/cv/cv.pl?member=heath

A Generative Psychogeographical experiment

On Sunday the 7th of July, 15.00 hours starting from the Jaarbeursplein, Utrecht, The Netherlands; Social Fiction will hit the streets again with a new application of the generative psychogeographical principle,

please look at our site
http://www.socialfiction.org/psychogeography
for more information.

This experiment takes place as a part of the Hot Summer of Generative Psychogeography.

Be invited.

Wilfried Hou Je Bek

eMeRGeNT 02 July 2nd 147 Essex Street

306090, a Journal of Emergent Architecture and Design invites you to attend: eMeRGeNT 02, \

***PI CALL FOR ARTISTS***

the popcorn incident is a new arts event in southampton, uk co-ordinated by boredomresearch. this is an opportunity to show and view new or experimental new media, sound, video, animation or performance work within a relaxed bar environment.

we would like to invite artists to submit work to be screened on the 5th august 2002 @ the green cellar, southampton

TO APPLY : please send a short statement on the work
submission on CD (Mac or PC), DVD, VHS, or miniDV tape, your contact details & SAE to:

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS is 19th July 2002

for further info on pi please visit www.boredomresearch.net/pi
many thanks
boredomresearch

still waiting for...

your piece of land.:.:. http://digilander.iol.it/dlsan/land/

What for? The 2003 event will explore the theory and practice of computer gaming, ergodic narrative, distributed and/or immersive performance environments, and streaming media with a particular focus on the real, imagined and wished for worlds that these things create.

[what is the Digital Arts and Culture conference?]
DAC was founded in 1998 by Espen Aarseth as an international conference focusing on new media theory and practice in critical contexts. DAC seeks to bring together new media artists and theorists in a spirit of collaboration and exploration. It has nurtured a significant international community of young and innovative researchers, artists and scholars in the interdisciplinary field of new media, and has become the benchmark conference for research and collaborative endeavour in new media. DAC offers a forum that recognises the importance of bringing together leading practitioners from art and theory for the exchange of ideas and to develop international professional networks and knowledge economies. MelbourneDAC:streaming wor(l)ds intends to continue this role through the papers, panels, forums, and exhibition it hosts, and the innovative series of collaborative workshops and events that will be undertaken by all conference participants. The mission of MelbourneDAC is to exchange ideas and promote new developments in digital arts and culture and to ensure that all participants develop relevant and sustainable professional communities.

A call for papers will be distributed shortly.

A call for entries for the MelbourneDAC::streaming wor(l)ds exhibition will be distributed shortly.

All conference material will be published (all participants will receive their copy during MelbourneDac).

A mentoring process will be available to postgraduate students and new academics who wish to have feedback in the development of their contributions.

A moderated announcement list for all interested in receiving additional information and updates is available. The exhibition reflects the current
> fascination with creatives from all disciplines focusing on new media and
> software for audio visual expression. Many artists are developing their own
> programs, pushing beyond the boundaries of the standard new media
> technologies, and standard interfaces. Featured work includes Leafcutter
> John, and Pelado, both writing their own applications in max and msp, used
> for manipulating sound. Soundtoys also features Julian Baker and Ixi, both
> exploring director software to make highly inventive stand-alone
> applications and music tools. Another common area of exploration is with
> sound controlled interfaces using the Antione Schmitt's FFT extra, for
> example artists like Toxi, Area 3 and Atty's Multi-amaze. Meanwhile the
> likes of Schmit and Bakteria are building autonomous generative machines.
> Also installed on one of the machines is Golin Levin's l interactive Flong
> piece, written in Java and only available as a stand alone. And working in
> the same sphere we have artists like Peter Luining, Rechord and Stanza, all
> with a fascination for interactive 'painting'. Stanza is also exhibiting his
> new subvergence work, and the project 'inner city'. Other premieres include
> Iriealist's new audio visual work and Squidsoup's Alt Zero 4. And it
> wouldn't be fair to leave out some of the audio visual artists who are
> currently working with 3-D worlds like Christina Mc Phee. Soundtoys would
> also like to acknowledge online contributions by Andy Wilson, Jim Andrews
> and Jay Malaiperuman and the other hundred artists exhibiting who have
> allowed for this project to develop.
>
> About Convergence.
>
> The merging of the audio and the visual is increasingly becoming a central
> issue in the development of interactive media. Web artists are fusing the
> arts, incorporating a wide range of approaches to the medium of the Internet
> and audio visual practice. Artists are producing new audio visual
> experiences, and this includes art, games, generative music and interactive
> environments. Advances in computer and online technologies have provided a
> whole new way of artistic expression and experience which incorporates
> opportunities for non-linear experience and interactivity as well as this
> convergence. Artists are attracted to a sense of connection and convergence
> which is one of several qualities inherent to the Internet as a medium for
> creative expression; sound, visual effect, time, movement and interaction all
> provide new parameters for the development of contemporary art. Artists have
> always been influenced by technology. The convergence of hardware and
> software has enabled many types of creatives to meet or converge. We are now
> seeing the emergence of a new art form. As this newness unfolds a history
> will unfold with it. At the moment there is a blurring of the boundaries as
> many approaches are adopted, and this is confused further because of the
> constantly changing and developing nature of technologies which also allows
> for the artwork themselves to change. We are starting to see a much bigger
> emphasis on works that generate and evolve. Formal relationship to art will
> change as the artists relationship to the process changes. Online, we have
> net.art - artists that are specifically addressing the uses and abuses of
> the Internet as a medium for creative expression. Within this context
> artists are exploring many technologies including shockwave, flash, vrml and
> java. And offline we see more application driven interface experiments using
> technologies such as max, super collider, and exploiting multi user systems,
> generative audio, and graphics displays. This exhibition addresses the
> blurring of these boundaries and presents artists working at the edge of
> software development and arts practise and the new musical interface. The
> exhibition offers insights into the diverse and creative nature of the web
> which is available to today's artists. These works could been seen as a new
> art form, or as a contribution to the new music and electronica.
>
> About Soundtoys
>
>
> Soundtoys.net, provides spaces for artists at the fore of the audiovisual
> field, giving focus to their developing art forms. The aim to help link up
> other artists, and to showcase artwork and artists working in new media.
> Future plans for soundtoys include cd roms, a book, specially commissioned
> works, themed shows and presenting exhibitions in festivals and galleries
> worldwide. Soundtoys.net is exhibiting exciting new works by a growing
> community of audio visual artists. Soundtoys.net also provide a forum for
> discourse around new technologies. The site looks at the serious issues
> around interactive arts, audio visual synthesis, generative art, and a
> history of interactivity. Increasingly a divergent group of artists are
> exploring, researching and playing within the parameters of soundtoys.
> Designers, fine artists, and musicians are all expanding their own work
> within the online audio visual domain. The diversity of the internet is
> reflected in soundtoys site, and the fact that artists are exploring so many
> technologies means many technologies are explored including shockwave,
> flash, vrml, java. Increasing numbers of artists are exploring, researching
> and playing within the parameters of the medium: Designers, painters, film
> makers, installation artists, writers, photographers, printmakers,
> musicians, each bringing to the online audio visual domain their own intent,
> their skill set, their history. So many threads are interweaving here to
> make this rich ever-evolving tapestry. The soundtoys site also features a
> journal section which provides a forum for debate around the creative use of
> new technologies on the internet, past, present and future.
> This
exhibition, 'Day Jobs', is described below and explores the
relationship between a net.artist's digital day job to their
art-making activities.
------------
Day-Jobs
A NetWork exhibition at New Langton Arts
www.newlangtonarts.org

This exhibition explores the relationship between net.art and its
social and economic context through case studies of individual
net.artists' day jobs in relation to their art, rather than the more
common art-historical or museological approach. This exhibition
examines the conditions of practice as a way into a genre. Digital
media artists have less of an economic base in art sales, and often
work in the same digital media by day for income as well as by night
as an artist. This situates digital artists between art and a
relatively new industry, as well as between their eerily similar day
and night activities, creating a kind of interference pattern that is
largely unexplored. This pattern is reflected in the art works, but
also, just as interestingly, in the day job projects of these
curators, programmers, and web-designers, often quite consciously.
This exhibition will look at a few of the more interesting cases,
taken from varied environments, and line up the art next to the day
job project as a way of uncovering how these new social,
intellectual, or economic patterns are influencing our art and the
rest of our lives.
-----------
I have a couple of people in mind for this show, but I'm writing to
you all to ask if you know of other artists who may present good
examples in this area - or if you yourself find yourself working in
this way. Ideally I would like to be able to exhibit an artist's
net.art next to projects they work on at their day job, and with the
help of the artist, try to make clear how themes, rebellions, or even
subconscious aesthetic decisions about information architecture or
programming may cross-over between the two. They need not be new
works.

I'm preferentially looking for artists working in California; but
that's not an unbreakable rule. So, if you are working in this area
or know of others who are, please contact me at this email address
within the next week or so. Thank you very much,
--
-

Richard Rinehart
---------------
Digital Media Director, Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive
www.bampfa.berkeley.edu
---------------
Instructor, Department of Art Practice
art.berkeley.edu
---------------
University of California, Berkeley

NYSCA Funds The Distribution Of New York Media Artists Work

The New York State Council on the Arts' Electronic Media & Film Program announces the availability of funding towards the distribution of recently completed independent media arts projects by New York artists.

With management assistance from National Video Resources, awards of up to $5,000 will be made on a competitive basis for audio/radio, film, video, computer-based work, and installation art incorporating these media. This funding category was established to help professional artists in the State gain greater exposure for their work.

These awards can be used for distribution expenses such as marketing, dubs/prints, transfers, closed captioning, subtitling, or CD-ROM release costs. Funding decisions will be based on the artistic quality of the work and the relevance of the distribution plan.

Deadline for submission is August 15, 2002. Applications will be available by June. Awards will be announced in December 2002.

To receive the guidelines and application contact NYSCA's Electronic Media & Film Program by:
+ phone 212/741-3993
+ email pjarowski@nysca.org
+ writing to the NYSCA-EMF Program, 175 Varick Street 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10014.

net art competition

VILLETTE DIGITAL
International Electronic Arts and New Media Festival
The Villette Digital festival is a joint initiative of the Cite des
Sciences, the Cite de la Musique and the Parc de la Villette. It is both a
showcase for major works from around the world and a forum for
experimentation and study. Its aim is to bring together projects directly
involved in the use of digital technologies and it encourages visitors to
share in many experiments during their entertaining, participative and
sensory experience. In this way, the festival's installations, concerts,
shows, games, workshops and digital cinema explore the impact of new
technologies on our everyday lives and the radical changes they are
bringing about in our cultural landscape.
MAJOR ONLINE NET ART COMPETITION
on the theme of AUDIO GAMES
On the occasion of the VILLETTE DIGITAL event to be held between 24 and 29
September 2002, the Cite des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Parc de la
Villette and the Cite de la Musique are organising a major international
online net art competition. The scheduling of the event
has been timed to honor the opening of Documenta 11 in Kassel,
Germany, which this year is concerned with socially engaged
"platforms" that explore the public communicative process.

It is in this spirit that the World Mediation Summit has been
conceived as a "ceremonial cultural exchange" in which I will present
to the US Department of State an artist-generated,
collectively-authored proclamation consisting of imaginative
methodologies and acts of mediation for intensifying intercultural
dialogue in these troubling times of crisis. This ceremonial
presentation of the proclamation to a representative of the State
Department will be conducted in the presence of US Department of Art
& Technology staff, as well as a consortium of cultural officials
from Washington embassies representing at least six nations. It is
our intent that this document, a critique of the Administration's
handling of the "war on terror" since 9-11, be transmitted within the
State Department to Secretary Powell, who will in turn submit it for
final transmission to President Bush.

I am asking the Rhizome Community to contribute to the collective
authorship of the proclamation by submitting a brief statement to be
included in the document. Think of this as a manifesto for reforming
the Administration's ignorance and lack of appreciation for cultural
concerns! This is an important opportunity for all of you who are
deeply entrenched in artistic expression, cultural issues, and the
general state of humanity, to offer new methodologies based on your
artistic and critical practice for confronting the violence and
turmoil that is rapidly spreading throughout the world. We intend to
provide the State Department with effective and creative tools for
strengthening the hand of its cultural officers. Unfortunately,
President Bush, along with the Department of State and the Security
Council, are clueless - they desperately need the help of the arts
community, which is why I am turning to you now. The US Department of
Art & Technology strongly believes that in our society, the artist
and cultural critic is a largely untapped, yet powerful force for
understanding and resolving differences that have lead to recent acts
of aggression and violence.

To guide the writing of your statements, the following is a list of
key recommendations to the Administration's approach and policy that
our proclamation seeks to state:

(1) to deepen its attentiveness to the richness and complexity of the
world's many distinct cultures, particularly in areas of conflict;

(2) to avoid what is being perceived in the world as a tone of aggression;

(3) to adopt and project a nuanced view of the world's social
conditions beyond a misleading division into "good and evil;"

(4) to reiterate the value and power of meaningful cultural dialogue
in its overall foreign policy.

I am deeply concerned with the Administration's lack of interest and
ability in bringing about a meaningful cultural exchange to solve
international conflicts, and it is my hope, through your input, to
expand upon the hope and possibility of a peaceful, more
culturally-engaged world, and to redefine the role of the artist (and
cultural critic) as a mediator on the world stage.

Each of you who submit a statement (keep them short, approximately 1
to 3 sentences) will be appropriately credited (unless you wish to
remain anonymous) and will receive a copy of the completed
proclamation prior to the World Mediation Summit. Please return your
statement in a timely manner (within one week), and please don't
hesitate to write if you have questions.

For more information on the World Meditation Summit visit the
Department Website:
http://www.usdept-arttech.net

As Andre Breton said, "perhaps the imagination is on the verge of
recovering its rights!"

Randall Packer
Secretary, US Department of Art & Technology

april 14

http://bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/bible?passage=genesis+1:2&AMP_version=yes
http://www.meadow4.com/squish/archives/april14.html
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/f?cwar:0:./temp/~ammem_h3ku:
http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/sheetmusic/a/a94/a9433/a9433-1-72dpi.html
http://www.sdrm.org/faqs/caseyjones/caseystone.jpg
http://bobdylan.com/songs/slowtrain.html
_
_
_
