Under street influence, HUSH paints the exhibit’s imagery as an inward vision, revealing layers of urban histories and figurative dimensions. “In this new work I’ve covered, tagged and erased the eyes of the women which takes away a relationship to the character, a focal point which makes your eyes want to discover the painting and mark making within it,” says HUSH. As the female forms are materialized by the tags, throws, and dubs of his superimposed marks, the paintings of “Unseen” project the visual imagery of the streets, sensualized by the urban classicism of its feminine faces.

“I look to take something like tagging that is generally seen as aggressive, ugly and masculine out of context and present it to the viewer as something beautiful,” HUSH says. The painted street tag is the quantum mark of HUSH’s fusion of Eastern and Western themes: a visual syntax of urban expressionism and cross-cultural contrasts, embodied within his figurations. “The presence of the female form within my work is important as a symbol and for me it symbolizes beauty and the power of sexuality and supports the perception of how the graffiti should be viewed.”

The 24 canvases of “Unseen” and site-specific works will also exhibit, for the first time, abstract paintings of mixed media, screen-print paintings, pencil studies, minimal pieces, screen prints and sticker collages on wood. In the featured painting, “Unseen I,” the figure’s eyes are tagged and stare darkly beyond its large 64” by 44” canvas, layered with acrylic, screen, spray paints, and screen inks on linen, syncretic with medium, style, and theme. “It’s a diverse body of work that should make an interesting show and explain the depth of my working process,” says HUSH, describing the show as, “The beauty of tagging, graffiti, and the female form.”

The opening reception for “Unseen” takes place Saturday, May 18th at Corey Helford Gallery. The reception is open to the public, and the exhibition will be on view through June 15, 2013.

HUSH
From his London studio, HUSH paints for exhibition and site work in Japan, Europe, Australia, and North America. A UK native, his street art, murals, and paintings have been featured in numerous books and publications and was recognized by London’s The Independent as one of the ‘Top 20 Up and Coming Artists’. His OneThirty3 project space in Newcastle UK, presents the best in street and urban art from around the world. In traditional societies, generations would come and go much faster than habitat would change. Catastrophes changed landscapes, be it natural or human in origin - from volcano eruption to migration to asteroid to cultivation. In contemporary times, variety is introduced quickly into landscapes by prosperity or adversity. Over the last century, industrialization, urbanization, revolution, wars, construction and reconstruction – each lead to a generation living under conditions different than previous ones.

The exhibit "CAPITAL OF NOWHERE" is about life in a changing landscape during the Information Age. Among 13 exhibited artworks personalizing effects of industrialization, urbanization, revolution, wars, construction and reconstruction are Alexandra Dementieva's interactive "Breathless" translating exhalation digitally into light and words, Vitaly Pushnitsky's hybrid painting-projection "Waiting" juxtaposing the transpiring of a sunrise over the existence of archaic columns, Elena Gubanova and Ivan Govorkov's sculptural “Generations” physically uniting decades of doors in solidarity; performances by collective Mylo screened on Soviet era soap. Contributions by CYLAND CoFounders include Anna Frants' new media installation "Cloud that Smells Blue" which inverts the relationship between oneself to the world and Marina Koldobskaya's ideal city painted on found fragments of old furniture.

This 6 week exhibit at CFZ
will hold a Vernissage: May 31 (7pm)
in conjunction with special Programming: May 31 (11am-2:30pm)
uniting Russia and Italy New Media pioneers at Aula Baratto.

----------------------------------------

About the SPECIAL PROGRAMMING: International New Media curators, critics, academics and artist gather to explore Art & Technology in contemporary culture.

May 31:

11-11:30 / Ca 'Foscari welcome

11:30-13:00 / DIGICULT presents
A New Media discussion: “WE’RE ON THE ROAD TO NOWHERE”
Curated and introduced by: Marco Mancuso (Digicult Director)
With: Alessio Erioli, Bertram Niessen, Domenico Quaranta, Valentina Tanni
Exploring the dynamics related to information dissemination, networks and channels promoting professional and artistic collaborations, esteemed panel guests will give their insight into nature and landscapes around us. The intent is to surround the perimeter of the Federal lands that include the Nevada Test Site, “Area 51”, Yucca Mountain and Nellis Air Force Range all located just north of Las Vegas, Nevada. The performance will utilize mixed-reality (Blue Mars Lite), GPS technology and, where feasible, live streaming video for real-time documentation. He will as well, literally, draw a 400+ mile long line around the geographical area in question using an armature trailing his bike, holding custom made pieces of 15" chalk. “Project 929” references the 928 nuclear tests that took place at the Nevada Test Site from 1951 to 1992.

Conceptually, Project 929: Mapping the Solar is an ideational and political exercise towards symbolically representing the possible, physically re-imagining geographical space for energy sustainability. To map this desire – become a moving point, line of battle, contour of an idea, an edge, line of communication, measure or guide – is a driving principle.

New technologies will virtually map and allow others to follow me online as I ride. A DIY, solar cell array is mounted on the extended platform of my bicycle to provide energy for portable locative media, video recording and live streaming. A GoPro camera mounted on a boom at the bicycle’s rear will record a “third person” point of view; a second camera will focus on the chalk as it draws continuously on road, a third camera will be mounted on my helmet.

Manifest AR (http://www.manifestar.info/) is working with DeLappe to develop a custom augmented reality application for smart phones and portable tablets to create an augmented reality documentary tour of the 460 mile route - photographs of me on my bike will be augmented with visualizations of the federal lands re-visioned as a gigantic solar farm (this aspect of the project will be created post-ride to provide a lasting, perhaps first of it's kind, augmented reality documentary of a performance art project).

This project is being sponsored by:
College of Liberal Arts, University of Nevada, Reno, Scholarly and Creative Activities Grant, GoPro, The Reno Bike Project, College Cyclery, The Center for Art+Environment - Nevada Museum of Art, Voltaic Solar, Xtracycle, Manifest AR, Brooks England and Blue Mars.

Here and Not: An Illustrated and Animated Performance on Birds

Stupid Pills is pleased to present a night of birds.

Here and Not is an illustrated and animated performance by Elkpen, with John Linton and Simon Reilly.

Hundreds of species of birds (and many more) have gone extinct. Let's consider one of them. Over the course of a century the population of passenger pigeons in the United States went from billions to just one, named Martha, who lived in the Cincinnati Zoo. She died in 1914.

Human impact on the world's life forms and ecosystems is probably here to stay (at least until we're gone). Some scientists proclaim this the beginning of the Anthropocene Era—a time in which evolution responds more to technology and hubris than natural selection. Who's footing the bill for our experiment?
Join us for a freestyle elkalogue on extinction, plenty, gone-ness, eating and being eaten, time, serendipity, cataclysm, unintended consequences, progress, and the shifting silicones of evolution. "Here and Not" will recount the plight of the passenger pigeon with illustration, animation, and music.

With an opening number by Stupid Pills.

About Elkpen
elk-ol-o-gy: n. 1. the branch of street art dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment.

Elkpen uses public space to frame images that talk about the state of nature in urban places. By placing a sign in a public space Elkpen hopes to bring immediacy and context to important topics while pointing to what we expect to see in our environment, what we overlook, and what we take for granted.

CALL FOR ENTRIES 9TH ANNUAL PIXELPOPS! This new work consists of an ongoing series of installations in conjunction with a new book and CD published by the Irish sound art label, Farpoint Recordings. The project is curated by Anthony Kelly.

Events:
Opening: Publication Launch and Performance Event:
WEDNESDAY 22 May 2013 | 7:30-9:30pm | FREE – reservation ticket required:
www.memoryroomlaunchandperformance.eventbrite.com
With The Quiet Club (Danny McCarthy and Mick O’Shea) and special guest, David Toop.

“In Conversation” and Performance Event:
SATURDAY 01 June 2013 | 2:00-5:00pm | FREE – reservation ticket required:
www.memoryroomconversationandperformance.eventbrite.com
With Danny McCarthy, and Anthony Kelly and David Stalling of Farpoint Recordings.

Through the use of personal materials gathered from his past and by using other related ephemera, the artist seeks to reach back in time on a 'psycho-sonic' journey, re-establishing old connections and reviving random fragments of lost memories and locating them in the now. This is achieved through the use of sounds, text and found objects that are installed in specially chosen locations throughout the space.

While these explorations may often connect specifically with aspects of McCarthy’s youth and early adulthood in his home-town of Mallow, Co. Cork (his father’s life as a blacksmith/farrier, nights spent playing rock-and-roll in the local dance-hall, early forays into improvisation), there are also meditations of a less specific and more abstracted nature. These are fleeting and often loosely threaded together, but always accessible, thus encouraging people to explore their own inner soundscape.

From 22 May until 07 June, the exhibition space at SoundFjord, London will play host to The Memory [box] Room, a further exploration and reconfiguration of the themes from this evolving project. Residing ‘memories of place’ and past histories caged within the structure of SoundFjord will mesh and play alongside the gentle reverberations of this latest, and unique, instalment of The Memory Room.

The Memory Room project, which had its first airing at Hilltown New Music Festival in 2010, is scheduled to travel to The Room (Turin, Italy) during late 2013.

About The Memory Room publication:
A new book, published by Farpoint Recordings accompanies The Memory Room installation. This book and 3” CD extend the experience of the installation itself, a further creative layer that can be taken away and absorbed by the viewer/listener at their own pace and in their own personal circumstances. Colour, and black and white photographs, drawings, and layers of text printed onto papers of varying opacity, read in combination with a sound composition contained on the CD, bring McCarthy’s ideas into the realm of the tangible.

The Memory Room book and CD is available from SoundFjord on the opening night and throughout the duration of the exhibition, as well as from Farpoint Recordings (www.farpointrecordings.com)

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.soundfjord.org ">www.soundfjord.org
http://www.soundfjord.org/exhibitions.htm

SoundFjord | Book Launch and Performance: Danny McCarthy, Mick O'Shea and David Toop

Danny McCarthy
The Memory [box] Room

The Memory Room is a project by the Cork-based multimedia artist Danny McCarthy, whose pioneering art practice explores a combination of visual and auditory experiences. This art is the flip side of Norman Rockwell’s middle-class American paintings of Thanksgiving gatherings or getting immunized, a shot, from the doctor to protect you from unseen danger. This is a different kind of danger: the danger of poverty, lack of work and opportunity. The work reflects and documents the violence and death that surround the lives of the gang members and the victims.

Final Tovarisch Residency at The Unstitute/CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Please here watch short the documentary of 'Olaf the Reasonable Swedish Deity'. May 15th - June 15th, 2013

Dear friends & colleagues,

I'm glad to share with you the Budhaditya Chattopadhyay show at the Widget Art Gallery on IPhone, IPod touch and IPad form May 15th to June 15th, 2013.

About the WAG:

The “WAG" is a mini 3-dimensional, single room gallery that fits into your pocket 'cause I've developed it for IPhone, IPod Touch and I Pad. Every month, directly on your mobile, The “WAG” hosts a solo digital art exhibition related to the dynamic site-specific contest. So, the Widget Art Gallery works both as a sort of kunsthall showing temporary
exhibitions and as a permanent collections museum because conserves all the past exhibitions inside an online archive. For IPhone and IPod touch, just copy this url http://www.chiarapassa.it/wag/mobile/ in Safari and choose: “add to home” and the WAG's icon will be saved on your IPhone. Do the same for IPad but paste this other URL: http://www.chiarapassa.it/wagipad/mobile/, or download the widget version for Mac osx dashboard at: http://www.chiarapassa.it/publicart.html . Past exhibitions at:
http://the-widget-art-gallery.blogspot.com/
To know more about the Widget Art Gallery, I suggest to read my latest interview on Rhizome http://rhizome.org/editorial/2012/oct/29/gallery-your-pocket/

About the exhibition:

The Room within a View by Budhaditya Chattopadhyay

‘The Room within a View’ (2013) stems out of on-going project ‘Doors of Nothingness’ (2012-) as a virtual prototype for a series of sited installations. The project frames and (con)textualizes myriad of thoughts within the mindfulness of a nomadic listener, triggered by pervasive interaction with various immersive but evanescent auditory situations. Essentially experiential, subject-oriented and contemplative in its development, the project explores the itinerant sonic interactions occurring between the listener and constantly emerging environments as cognitive processes of hyper-listening and thinking, which arguably transcend the epistemological constrains of sound. http://budhaditya.org/

Enjoy the show!

Very best, Chiara.

--
Chiara Passa - new media artist
chiarapassa@gmail.com
http://www.chiarapassa.it
http://www.ideasonair.net
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiara_Passa (Ita)
Find me also: http://www.chiarapassa.it/socialnetworks.html

Link Editions releases After Brad Troemel, by Chris Coy

Chris Coy, After Brad Troemel, Link Editions, Brescia 2013. Soft cover, 288 pp, English, € 15.00, ISBN 9781291404098.

Link Editions is proud to announce the release of "After Brad Troemel", by US based artist Chris Coy. The book is the first of a selection made out of an open call for proposals, by a jury including Andreas Broeckmann, Ben Fino-Radin and Domenico Quaranta, to be released in our series "In My Computer" along 2013.

"After Brad Troemel" (ABT) is an artist book conceived for the JstChillin exhibition "Read/Write" at 319 Scholes in Brooklyn in 2011. The book - originally published in a limited edition of 20 - took as its conceptual core the characterization of artist Brad Troemel as a genius and a mastermind analyzed through the lens of conspiracy theory and amateur internet sleuthing. According to artist and writer Artie Vierkant, who wrote the introduction to this edition, ABT is not "about Brad Troemel, nor any of the myriad names or identities that are mentioned in its pages. ABT is about the construction of identity in a mediated public space - largely concerned with social interactions on the Internet, but most prominently through textual and visual communication. If it could be said to be about Brad Troemel, or even about Chris Coy himself, then these two are taken as case studies of two very divergent methods of approaching mediated identity."

The book, which disappeared from circulation soon after its first release, is now made available by Link Editions as a print-on-demand paperback through Lulu.com, and as a freely downloadable PDF available on Lulu.com, Issuu.com and on Link Editions' website.

Chris Coy (www.seecoy.com) is an artist and filmmaker currently living and working in Las Vegas. He has shown work at the New Museum in New York, the Sundance Film Festival, the Netherlands Media Art Institute and numerous international art festivals and group exhibitions.

In My Computer is a series of books collecting unpublished material available in your computer. The book can take any shape compatible with POD's production and distribution standards. A new call for proposals will be announced soon.
Link Editions (http://editions.linkartcenter.eu) is a publishing initiative of the Link Center for the Arts of the Information Age. Link Editions uses print on demand and digital formats to create an accessible, dynamic series of essays and pamphlets, but also artist books, catalogues and conference proceedings. A keen advocate of the idea that information wants to be free, Link Editions releases its contents free of charge in .pdf format, and on paper at a price accessible to all. Link Editions is a not-for-profit initiative and all its contents are circulated under an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) license.

Until June 15, all Link Editions books will be available onLulu.com with a 20% discount.

More info, buy and download:

http://www.linkartcenter.eu/
http://editions.linkartcenter.eu/
www.lulu.com/spotlight/linkeditions
http://issuu.com/linkeditions

Six and a Half: Books as the subject and object of Art.

Six and a Half" is the new solo project of Genco Gulan where he used books as the subject and object of his art. Call for Projects

Solid Interfaces & Urban Games: Digital Games in the Public Space. Call for Projects

Open Call for project proposals to be developed during a production workshop for the creation of video games related to public space and the city as an interface (July 1-7, 2013) in Medialab-Prado (Madrid, Spain).

During seven days of intensive work, ideas will be tested and prototypes developed by working with partners and technical assistants.

Deadline: May 31, 2013.

More information and submissions: http://medialab-prado.es/article/convocatoria_interfaces_solidas

Framework

In recent years, the video game experience has outgrown TV screens, game consoles and laptops, becoming increasingly ubiquitous. The availability of mobile devices, tablets, sensors, geolocation services, augmented realities and media facades has allowed the development of new game ideas experimentally and as a prototype. At the forefront of these game forms, which take place in some cases without the screen as an interface, is the interaction with other users and with the environment.

Moreover, commercial controllers like Wiimote or Kinect have popularized the idea of the game away from the traditional game controller, transforming the game into a complete physical experience.

This workshop proposes to think about games in the public space as an opportunity to generate other uses of the city and connections among its citizens.

Lines of Work

The selection will consider ideas and projects that are already taking place and address one of the following elements:

· The use of urban furniture as an interface for the game
· Media Façade
· Non-random Games
· Interaction with the space
· Place specific
· Networked City

Methodology

A maximum of 4 projects will be selected and developed collaboratively in this intensive workshop with the support of tutors, technical assistants and partners.

Once projects are selected, there will be an open call for collaborators, who will be fairly selected by the organization and the project promoters.

Open Call for collaborators. The project is exploring the subtle and very specific exhibition space on the edge of intimate real life environment and public on-line space, as impersonated in personal monitor.
In order to perceive the exhibition, the user has to give up interactive functions normally performed on his computer and wholly surrender to the “passive” experience offered by the screen saver.

The “ScreenSaverGallery” started in March 2013 with “Interior series” by Berlin-based artist, curator and art historian Robert Sakrowski; (more info: http://screensaver.metazoa.org/sakrowski-interiors/) and will continue with new projects selected by various curators.

“SreenSaverGallery” is aimed not only at software and web based artworks, but also explores the screen-saving possibilities of more traditional art forms, mediums and processes.

The announce of new launches and further information concerning the exhibition will be regularly published at http://screensaver.metazoa.org. Once installed, the “ScreenSaverGallery” will automatically renew its programme according to the exhibition plan, bringing new works of art onto your computer screen.

“ScreenSaverGallery” does not endanger Your computer nor Your privacy.

CURRENT CURATORS:

Mary Meixner
Barbora Trnkova & Tomas Javurek

Working Artist Org. / $1000 Working Art Grant / Art Purchase Awards / Call for Submissions

We offer small monthly art purchase awards to help serious artists keep working. Just as their predecessors transformed urban neighborhoods, such as New York’s SoHo and Chelsea, through their energy and imagination, today’s artists are altering our perceptions of, and relationships with, urban space though their digital inventions and interventions. Thus, it is the purpose of this symposium, art exhibition, and scholarly volume to formally appraise the ways new media and digital artists engage urban ecology. It seeks to gather together contributions from artists, architects, computer scientists, designers, urban planners, social scientists, critical theorists, and others to consider these new modes of seeing, representing, and connecting within the urban setting.

There are three possible ways to participate:

1. Symposium. Propose an oral presentation, dialog, panel, or other form of audience engagement for the symposium. Topics can range from reviews of how technology supports digital artistic practice to social studies of how a group or community is engaged by the work of digital and new media artists – and everything in between.

The proposal should be approximately 300 words in length, include a very short list of important references, the names and affiliations of the presenters, along with a brief bio of each. Papers related to all accepted presentations will be considered for the edited scholarly volume (see below).

2. Edited Scholarly Volume. The goal of the scholarly volume is to define and contextualize the ways new media and digital artists engage the urban environment and its population. It seeks chapter proposals that describe theories, applications, analyses, case studies, reviews, histories, and manifestos that include, but art not limited to:

• Artistic and design practices for the urban setting
• Artist, designer, scientist, technologist collaborations
• Artistic creations and practice based on scientific/technological models and simulations
• Virtual and physical information artifacts related to, or created through, artistic and design processes
• Artistic mapping of information within the urban setting
• The relationship between information spaces and urban spaces
• The role of the viewer in urban art
• How digital artistic practice engages communities within the urban setting
• Technological advances supporting urban art
• User interfaces supporting urban art

As with the symposium proposal, a chapter proposal should be approximately 300 words in length, include a very short list of important references, the names and affiliations of the presenters, along with a brief bio of each. It is anticipated that the scholarly volume will be published by a major international publisher.

3. Art Exhibition. Artists are invited to submit artwork related to the symposium theme for display either within the Pace Digital Gallery or through its website (http://csis.pace.edu/digitalgallery/index.html ). Works made in collaboration with James Tunick integrate eye tracking, motion tracking, and augmented reality sculpture with projection mapping.

Press Release:
SOL’SAX organizes Jubilees every year to celebrate Juneteenth, an American holiday commemorating the liberation of the last slaves in Texas on June 19th 1865. Each year the Jubilee focuses on a specific cultural product that has been used by culture soldiers to create social freedom.

Masking is a cultural force around the world. The masking strategy celebrated in this exhibit stands in stark contrast to masking traditions that use mimicry and satire to ridicule the other by appropriating their identity. In many animist traditions, masks are more than a tool of anonymity to attack outsiders. They are visual aids to honor Ancestors. Most masquerade traditions of West and Central Africa are focused on defining and redefining their own identity rather than ridiculing or dismissing "the other".

This exhibition explores masquerade traditions that celebrate a deep reverence of self and acknowledges the self as an ancestral construction. Saya Woolfalk has mined ancestral masquerade traditions from around the world, fusing eclectic cultural references by using her personal aesthetic sense as glue. Her ongoing body of work featuring female characters called the “Empathetics” uses empathy as a tool to heal the pain of Colonial globalization, European supremacy and patriarchy. Firelei Báez directs her transformative aesthetic to riff on the Tignon headdress tradition of New Orleans. She celebrates this battle proven cultural soldier strategy of transforming insults into honor with this specific historical reference of cultural resistance. SOL’SAX uses masks that are hybrids of the traditional Dogon ancestral masks of West Africa and the contemporary protest sign to celebrate the protestors of the Civil Rights movement and the nonviolent cultural tools they used with roots in the masquerade traditions of Sub-Saharan Africa. There will also be a performance and video art series where artists Derrick Adams, Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow, Zachary Fabri, Kambui Olujimi and many more will present work featuring masking or the appropriation of a persona. On Juneteenth (June 19th) there will be a Jubilee Masquerade where attendees will be encouraged to bring their own mask.

https://www.facebook.com/theimclab

Call: animateCOLOGNE - Cologne Art & Animation Festival

Call for entries
Deadline: 1 June 2013
-----------------------
animateCOLOGNE - Cologne Art & Animation Festival
is looking for new exciting artworks using most different forms of animation

Launched in 2012 in the framework of
Cologne Art & Moving Images Awards
the platform for "art & moving images",
animateCOLOGNE will release in September 2013
its 2nd festival edition - presenting again
the best animated artworks -
hybrids which can be used for diffferent forms of representing -
screening, projection and installation.

The details, regulations and entry form can be found on
http://www.nmartproject.net/netex/?p=4954

--------------------------------------
Cologne Art & Moving Images Awards
animateCOLOGNE - Cologne Art & Animation Festival
http://caaf.newmediafest.org
http://coff.newmediafest.org/blog/

artvideo (at) koeln.de

--------------------------------------

Critical Information Graduate Conference

Call for Proposals and Projects

Critical Information
Graduate Student Conference

Hosted by the MFA program in Art Criticism & Writing at the School of Visual Arts, New York City, December 1, 2013
http://criticalinformationsva.com

Proposals due June 30, 2013 to critical.information.sva@gmail.com

Critical Information is an interdisciplinary graduate student conference, which provides a platform to assess current scholarship and research at the intersection of art, media, and society. Hauberg, Pilchuck Glass School has been a primary force in the evolution of glass as a means of artistic expression. By creating an environment with a primary focus on glass, access to resources, and an ever-expanding international community of artists (65 countries represented), Pilchuck has become one of the largest, most comprehensive educational centers in the world for artists working in glass.

Pilchuck’s artistic and educational programs take place on a serene fifty-four-acre wooded campus fifty miles north of Seattle. This setting in the foothills of the Cascade Range overlooking Puget Sound provides isolation from the influence of commerce and urban centers and allows artists to focus on art. The campus features two hot-glass shops, a studio building, kiln shop, coldworking studio, flat shop for neon and flameworking, wood and metal shops, and a glass-plate printmaking studio. These facilities offer a comprehensive array of workspaces with a broad range of equipment for glass art production. Other facilities include a lodge that houses a lecture area, library, kitchen, and dining room. An administrative building contains office spaces and a gallery with exhibitions of work by faculty and staff throughout the sessions so students can better understand the creativity and talent of their teachers and those who make the school work. Nestled into the wooded hillsides are numerous residential buildings for faculty, artists in residence, students, and staff. There are miles of trails through beautiful Pacific Northwest forests that provide opportunities for exercise and peaceful contemplation.

Over the past thirty years, thousands of artists from across the nation and around the world have come to Pilchuck to teach, to test new ideas, to learn, and to expand their artistic and creative horizons in the company of others who share a passion for art while coming at it with diverse perspectives and artistic modes. Every year, from May through September, Pilchuck offers thirty-six intensive residential sessions. Classes are limited to ten to twelve students and offer a concentrated inquiry into techniques and aesthetic ideologies. Students work in hot and cold glass techniques including glassblowing, casting, fusing, neon, stained glass, painted glass, flameworking, mixed-media sculpture and engraving.

Courses emphasize experimentation and teamwork while fostering individual initiative and expression. Instructors include leading national and international glass artists and university faculty members. Slide shows, discussions and demonstrations occur daily and are open to everyone on campus, providing stimulating opportunities for dialogue and exchange across disciplines and cultures. Surrounded by a community of great talent and creativity, both new and experienced artists make tremendous conceptual and artistic progress in a very short period of time. These experiences often become the impetus for new directions of artistic exploration for years to come.

During the summer sessions, seven separate artist residencies bring accomplished visual artists in all media to contribute to the artistic richness of the Pilchuck experience. Generally, the artists in residence are known for their work outside the field of glass, but some are international masters of glass.

The School has an annual operating budget of just under $3 million which is funded through a mix of contributed income, events, and tuition and fees; net assets of over $7 million; and a year-round staff of 16. The administrative offices are based in Seattle; the campus approximately an hour outside of Seattle is the site of all programmatic activity.

Pilchuck Glass School advances glass as an artistic medium beyond all imagining. The School is a haven preserved on Pacific Northwest forestlands where artists gather to study glass in ways both known and unforeseen. In this intimate and nurturing international community, artists and students learn from each other, freedom of imagination and personal expression thrive, and lives are transformed. At its heart, the School honors the relevance, integrity, and importance of the artistic process itself.

Mission Statement:
Pilchuck Glass School inspires creativity, transforms individuals and builds community.

Visual Designer

Part-time position available April 1:
Visual Designer

Triple Canopy, a nonprofit online magazine of art and literature with studios and a venue located in Brooklyn, seeks a visual designer.
