But there's a way to keep track of the New York Times, the Washington Post, Talkingpointsmemo.com, Wonkette—most major newspapers and nearly all blogs—in a lightweight, speed-readable format that lets you scan dozens, even hundreds, of fresh headlines a day without the time-wasting tedium of opening one Web site after another. All you need to do is download and install an RSS reader, which is no harder than installing Netscape's browser was in 1994. You can then scroll through cleanly organized headlines and story summaries. The result is an executive summary of what's new on the Net today. When you see a story you want to read, you click on it. How do you get started? The first step is to install an RSS reader (also known, somewhat clumsily, as an "RSS aggregator"). For PC users, my techie friends and the editors at PC World recommend SharpReader. It's free, although the developer welcomes donations from happy users. If you get error messages when you try to start it (such as, "The application failed to initialize properly" or, "The dynamic library mscoree.dll could not be found"), go to the Windows Update site. There, find and install the Microsoft.NET Framework. Reboot, and you should be able to launch SharpReader. (I'm on a Mac, so I use Shrook.)

Once you've installed a reader, go back to your browser and open your favorite site. Most sites have a link that says "RSS" or an orange button that says "XML." Some sites have multiple links, one for each section of the publication. Cut and paste these URLs into your reader to read the site in RSS. Sorry, there's no one-click or "click here" method for this yet. After a few seconds, a list of headlines should appear. Click on SharpReader's "Subscribe" button if you want to add the feed to your reading list.

There is a neat shortcut that often works in lieu of the above mouse dance. Just type the site's main URL into SharpReader's URL window (e.g., "www.wonkette.com"). SharpReader will go to the site and look for an RSS feed for you. If it finds one, it will automatically load it. I find this trick usually works with blogs but not with newspaper sites.

One nuisance is that some sites, including the New York Times, don't list their feeds on their home pages, even though the Times provides feeds for nearly 20 sections. Even more confusing, some newspapers' feeds are only available through a third-party site such as NewsIsFree, which can prove impossible to search. To find those feeds, use the Syndic8 search engine. (The search box is hard to find; it's halfway down the site's home page, on the left.) If your favorite site doesn't have an RSS feed, odds are it will soon: Slate launched its feed today, and Amazon just added RSS feeds to let shoppers speed-browse its inventory.

To make RSS live up to its "really simple" moniker, I've compiled the feeds for some favorite reads—everything from Slate to the "Today's Papers" newspapers to some major blogs—on this page. Just right-click on the link, save it to your desktop, then import the file to your RSS reader. To do that in SharpReader, click File, then Import Subscriptions.

Most RSS programs have a Preferences option that lets you tell the program how often to check sites for updates. Once you've subscribed to a feed, SharpReader will update it every hour. You can fiddle with the Preferences menu to speed that up to as little as 15 minutes.

For advanced info junkies, there are more extreme ways to dose yourself. Feedster searches the content of thousands of RSS feeds and returns the newest posts first. It's sort of the Google News for RSS, but you can find stuff posted an hour ago that won't show up on Google for days. NewsGator is a program that works with Microsoft Outlook so you can sync incoming news and blogs to your PDA.

1. Check with your college financial aid office. I am no more than a humble man. I do have such dark phase in some part of my life long time ago. It’s family vacation time and while it’s great to get away and have a wonderful time together, these trips can also be a nightmare for adults when children become restless and bored.

Kids see the world different than adults and will often have various reactions to the sites and sounds around them. If you are traveling in a plane or car, you will especially want to keep your children preoccupied to prevent them from acting up.

Here are some ways to ensure your family vacation travel goes smoothly.

1) Plan your trip ahead of time – the old “get in the car and let’s go” may be great for people without children, but taking your kids on a long trip requires more planning. When taking a car trip, you’ll need to map out a route where there are plenty of rest stops along the way.

Children need to get out of the car to stretch their limbs and let out all that cooped up energy.

2) Expect frequent bathroom breaks and lots of questions – “I’ve gotta go to the bathroom” and “Are we there yet” are classic things that you will hear your kids say over and over again. Instead of being annoyed, know ahead of time that this is going to be a normal part of the trip, so don’t take it out on the kids. Remember, they have smaller bladders than adults and shorter attention spans.

You could have a come back line like: “No, we’re not there yet, but here’s something I bet you don’t know about . . .”

3) Bring along some entertainment – a great travel tip for child fun is to bring along some travel games that will keep your kids preoccupied for long stretches of time. 4) Bring snacks – make sure to pack plenty of healthy snacks so you can dole them out along the way when the kids say they’re hungry. This gives you more control over what they eat during the trip, then say, stopping at a gas station and grabbing a greasy hot dog and sugary soda.

You could bring along your own granola snack bags with raisins, nuts, dried fruit, etc. Also juice boxes are perfect for long trips. If you like to bake, then homemade cookies and brownies are always appreciated. And that old staple, the pack and go sandwich is still a winner.

5) Bring along a babysitter – invite a family member or friend to come along - someone who can be responsible for the kids while you take a much needed break. Make sure it’s someone the kids know and feel comfortable being around.

6) Take it Easy on the Activities – once you’ve arrived at your destination, it’s tempting to try and pack your schedule with a full day of activities. The problem with this idea is that your young children will get tired out and become cranky. You want your kids to be able to enjoy the experience and have good memories, which they can’t do if they are worn out.

Older children may not wish to do everything that you want to do. If they are teenagers, try and give them some time and space to do their own thing. Remember, this vacation is for them to get away from it all and have some fun too

7) Keep younger children on a regular sleep schedule – children will naturally want to stay up later while on vacation, but remember that they may get cranky if they don’t get enough sleep. You’ll want to let them stay up maybe an hour or so after their normal bedtime, but then let them know it’s time to hit the sack.

Smuggling is a fascinating part of Dorset's history and the county's World Heritage coastline is littered with smugglers coves. This travel tip article is about an exhilarating, yet undemanding coastal path walk. It starts in one such cove, hidden amongst some of England's most magnificent coastal scenery. It then takes you to a pretty beach in a tranquil bay, before returning to a real smugglers inn which is one of the most picturesque traditional English pubs you'll find anywhere.

The walk starts at the pub which is unsurprisingly named, "The Smugglers Inn". You will find it by driving westwards, along the A353, towards Weymouth. About six miles before Weymouth, and after passing a left hand turning, signposted Ringstead Bay, take the next left which is signposted Osmington Mills. There is also a helpful secondary signpost labeled "Smugglers Inn". Continue along the lane as it meanders fairly steeply downhill for about three quarters of a mile. You will see the Smugglers Inn at the foot of the hillside on your left and the car park on higher ground to the right. You park here. At the time of writing it is a free car park but please understand that it is intended for pub patrons, so remember to have a drink or meal in the inn when you return later.

Walk down the steps from the car park to the inn and look for a narrow path that leads along the left side of the building and goes to the rear where it becomes the start of the walk. When the walk opens up into a hilly field, head for the lower of the two styles and follow the footpath down to the cove. Here there is a very rocky and pebbly beach with a small waterfall that is fun to cross and makes an excellent backdrop for photographs.

After spending some time exploring the smugglers cove, go back to the field and head for the other style, signposted Coastal Path and Ringstead. This path takes you to the cliff top and provides some superb views across the bay towards Portland and Weymouth Harbor. Look out for the wreck of a small ship that pokes through the surface at low tide but can also be seen under the waves at other times in the crystal clear, turquoise shallows at the foot of the cliff. Continue along the footpath until it descends to nearly sea level with a turn off right to the beach. This will bring you out onto the shingle and pebble, west end of Ringstead Bay. At this end you will find some interesting rock pools and an offshore reef that is uncovered by the tide. The bay stretches for about half a mile to where it ends at White Nothe, a dramatic, white cliff headland. It's worth the walk to the far end of the beach because the further you go the less pebbly the beach gets and there is quite a bit of sand to be found once the tide goes out. About midway along the bay there are a few holiday homes, some permanent residences, a shop and a café about fifty yards inland and up a path from the beach. Swimming is safe for adults and children in the usually tranquil waters of the bay and there is plenty of grass above the beach for the kids to run around on. The beach is a great place to look for fossils, being part of the World Heritage site, aptly nicknamed, "The Jurassic Coast".

When you have had enough time sunbathing, exploring the beach or swimming in the turquoise sea, return the same way as you came, remembering to stop off at the Smugglers Inn for drinks or a bite to eat. The locals call the inn, "Smugs" and it dates back to the 13th century. Its situation in the ravine between sheer cliffs has always made it a perfect retreat and landing spot for smugglers. When you go inside to order your drinks or food, you will find plenty of information to read up on about the famous smugglers who once frequented the place. Watch your head under the low roof beams and try to imagine the atmosphere in the days that a gang of notorious smugglers huddled around the huge fireplaces and secret alcoves, plotting their next run across the channel.

As you sit back to enjoy a meal, you might pick up one of the many tourist leaflets that provide further travel tips and information about the Dorset coast and countryside. Yesterday I had a chance to meet Bruce Poon Tip, owner and CEO of G.A.P Adventures, one of Canada's most successful travel entrepreneurs. You may wonder, what is he like? Bruce is the owner of Canada's largest adventure travel company, an attractive man of about 37 years of age, dressed in casual attire and not afraid to speak off the cuff. Certainly a charismatic personality who was able to captivate last night's capacity crowd at the G.A.P. concept store in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood.

In 1990 Bruce went on an organized backpacking trip to Thailand where he had a chance to explore the people and the country on $10.00 a day. This experience gave him the idea to create G.A.P Adventures, today Canada's largest adventure travel company that now sells thousands of different trips and annually sends 40,000 passengers on their own small-group adventures. G.A.P has about 300 employees today, headquartered in Toronto, with operational offices in various countries of Latin America. It's most recent endeavors are the G.A.P concept stores which have recently been opened in high-traffic areas in Toronto and Vancouver, places where travellers can research their adventure trip, get more information about their desired destination and book their once-in-a-lifetime experience supported by good advice with no sales pressure.

For his entrepreneurial savvy Bruce has won numerous awards, besides receiving an award as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40, Bruce has been also been honored as one of Canada's top 5 entrepreneurs by Canadian Business as well as Canada's 100 leaders of tomorrow. Profit Magazine named him in their 20th anniversary issue cover story as one of Canada's Top 10 Entrepreneurs of the last 20 years. Bruce also received the Global Traders Leadership award from the government for his ground breaking ideas in exporting services.

Recently Bruce was asked by the World Bank and UNESCO to represent a team to visit the Peoples Republic Of China to lecture on Sustainable Development. In January of 2002 Bruce was the only Canadian operator invited to speak at the United Nations Launch of the Year Of Eco Tourism in New York. Bruce defied the odds once again last year by winning Canada's prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year, as well as the National Citation for Entrepreneurship.

G.A.P's additional awards include having two trips chosen among the TOP 25 Adventures in the World by National Geographic Adventure magazine, the Ethics in Action Award, the Global Traders Award and the Clean Air Commute Award for five straight years.

Although a consummate business man, Bruce Poon Tip has a conscience and he has founded his entire enterprise on the concept of sustainability and established travel practices that show consideration of natural surroundings and local cultures. By limiting the travel group size to 12 people, by taking local transportation and staying in small, locally owned hotels and guesthouses, G.A.P travelers are able to minimize their footprint in foreign communities and get maximum exposure to local culture.

Planeterra is a non-profit organization founded by G.A.P to give back. Today Planeterra raises funds for a number of community projects, international charities and an endowment fund to ensure long-term support of community development and conservation projects for years to come. Some of the community projects that G.A.P sponsors through donations include a community school in Ecuador, a foundation in Honduras to help women start their own businesses, an NGO in Costa Rica for environmental and wildlife conservation projects, a local battery recycling project in Chile, a drop-in center for street children in Cuczo, Peru, and many more. G.A.P Adventures itself also initiated a Women's Weaving Project in Peru that taught local women ancient weaving techniques as well as natural fabric dye processes. Today all G.A.P travel groups visiting the Sacred Valley in Peru have a chance to see and purchase high quality textiles produced by these weavers, all sold at fair trade prices.

As another example of the innovativeness of his company, Bruce shared with us the story of how he went out to purchase the "Explorer", the world's first purpose-built expedition cruise ship. In March of 2004 Bruce went on an expedition cruise through the Antarctic and fell in love with the experience. He figured he need to buy his own expedition cruise ship and started looking for suitable vessels. In April of 2004 he found the "Explorer", a historic expedition ship with a capacity of 112 passengers and a crew of 60 people. The ship had been docked in Genoa, Italy, for many months due to the financial problems of its owners. Just another 2 months later, but after many complications, G.A.P took possession of the ship. Only another 4 months later, after extensive restorations, the Explorer went on its inaugural journey and today offers expedition cruises to such unique places as Antarctica, the Amazon, Spitzbergen, and Greenland. (Incidentally, G.A.P. has agreed to sponsor our first Travel Story Contest and the grand prize winner of our contest will win an exciting adventure cruise on the Amazon in the Explorer - all thanks to G.A.P. Adventures.)

G.A.P's innovative business ideas don't end here. G.A.P also has a travel TV Show: Great Adventure People TV shows viewers the world – G.A.P Adventures style. The camera accompanies small groups of G.A.P Adventure travelers and follows them on unique G.A.P. adventure trips– cycling through the fascinating country of Vietnam, exploring exotic Morocco, and hiking, biking and rafting through captivating Spain and Italy.
