I have been working hard on my entry for ArtPrize, and it’s now complete. ArtPrize is an international art competition decided by public vote, with a Grand Prize of $250,000! It runs from September 23 – October 10, 2009.

Amalgam Comics Logo Studies by Todd Klein

As I mentioned before I love reading this guy’s behind-the-scenes breakdown and thoughts on comic book logos. This time around Todd does a full analysis of each of the Amalgam Comics titles that were printed by Marvel and DC in the late nineties. Amalgam Comics was a brief mash-up of the Marvel and DC universes that was created after the Marvel vs. DC storyline that ran for a number of issues prior. The Amalgam Comics line consisted of a series of one-shot comic books each combining a popular Marvel character with a popular DC character. I followed the whole Marvel vs. DC storyline and when these Amalgam books came out I bought and enjoyed every issue.

Dark Knight Movie Icons

I created these Dark Knight icons shortly after the movie came out, but I didn’t have a great way to share them. That’s all changed now, so finally, here they are.

Preview: Bat Signal (on), Joker Card and Two-Face Coin (scarred)

This is my first set of icons that I’ve ever released to the public, so please, if you have an issue with any of the file formats please let me know. Sidenote: The Bat Signal icons (off/on) make a great Trash Can replacement (empty/full) in your Mac Dock. Enjoy!

God of War III Trailer

After playing and loving the first two God of War games, I can’t wait to get my hands on God of War III. The new trailer certainly doesn’t make it any easier waiting for the game’s release. It looks like I’m going to have to bite the bullet and finally get a PlayStation 3.

My father always said, “Everyone should write a book.” I think he’s right, and hopefully I’ll get to that someday. But nowadays, everyone should also write a blog. The newly structured RexRainey.com has been online for a few weeks now, but here’s the official “Launch” post.

Tales of the Black Freighter Trailer

One of my favorite parts of the Watchmen comic book was the comic within the comic, “Tales of the Black Freighter,” a story about a marooned pirate, that parallels the main story. For the upcoming Watchmen movie they turned this story into an animation with Gerard Butler voicing the main character. Unfortunately the animation was cut from the movie, but it is being released on Blu-Ray and DVD! They just released the trailer. Check it out below.

I’m loving the Sci Fi Channel’s “Humans Are Among Us” ads. The concept is great and the illustrations are excellent. Hats off to the advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi, and especially the artist, Mike Koelsch.

A little about Todd

I wasn’t aware of who Todd was until I found his blog, but man had I seen his work! He’s been working in comics for decades, with logo designs and lettering in many DC and Marvel books. You can find out more about his career on his site.

Logo Studies

Now, to the main reason for writing… By far, my favorite posts on his blog are his Logo Studies. They are absolutely great reads! He critiques comic book logos he’s designed, as well as logos created by others. His analysis of what works and what doesn’t is amazing, and essential reading for anyone interesting in logo design, comic book fan or not.
