Are your Joomla 1.0 templates useless for your Joomla 1.5 websites?

As the Joomla core team moves support from the 1.0 platform over to 1.5 you may be asking yourself if all of that work making and/or customizing your Joomla 1.0 templates has gone to waste. The answer is... "No". Converting to Joomla 1.5 is a thoughtful process, but it only requires a few edits to the way content is called. In order to convert to Joomla 1.5, you should begin with your index.php file. Before we begin with the new calls to convert to Joomla 1.5, take note that the security syntax has been modified.

These should be the first lines of code in your index file.

Your current 1.0 file will read:

{codecitation style="brush: PHP;"}<?php defined( '_VALID_MOS' ) or die( 'Direct Access to this location is not allowed.' ); ?>{/codecitation}

In order to convert to Joomla 1.5 the new syntax will read:

{codecitation style="brush: PHP;"}<?php
// direct access not allowed
defined( '_JEXEC' ) or die( 'Restricted index access' ); ?>{/codecitation} .

Joomla Positions

When building a new website with Joomla, distributing different modules on each page will be some of the most common tasks you'll encounter. In order to do this effectively you'll need to be aware of the Joomla positions for your template. These positions are set by the template designer via a combination of three files and file types. These are templatedetails.xml, index.php, and usually template.css. We'll take a look at these here:

TemplateDetails.xml

This file is located in your templates folder and advises Joomla where to place a new module in the template. As an example, if you're creating a new banner module and would like the module to display in the banner position you would choose banner in the module parameters.

What are Joomla Groups?

When referring to a Joomla Group, in most cases you're referring to the ACL functionality in Joomla. The Joomla core installs with handy three default access level controls. Access Control Levels allow you to segment the way users interact with content on your website. Upon installing Joomla successfully the three default groups are Public, Registered, and Special.

The Public Group

The public Joomla Group allows for general viewing of the content. By default all new menu items, sections, categories, articles, modules, and plug-ins are set to Public. Joomla Section Explained

Joomla sections allow you as the administrator to easily organize the content of your website. When starting with Joomla I thought of the Joomla sections as general keywords. Let's take the general keyword template. For this example, template is the section. This is where we are going to keep all of our categories and articles related to templates. We'll begin by creating one inside of the Joomla administrator.

Navigate to your administrator, and in the "content" column click the section manager link from the drop down list.

Click New
Type Templates into the Title
Ensure it's published
For this example we are going to leave the access level as public and the following fields at their default
Click Save
