I’m honoured to have been asked to contribute to Volume One, LXXII’s compilation of electronic music. You can buy it here (and hear it below).

Again with the lovely Jutojo and Fertig I made sound for 2018′s re:publica conference in Berlin. This year was POP.

In 2016 I started a collaborative project with Architects and Crystallographers from Cardiff University to explore creative opportunities within crystallographic data-sets and modelling algorithms. This composition research piggy-backed on to their Leverhulme funded research which had already commenced. Outcomes included music, generative compositions, audio-visual work and an installation in Berlin. Below you’ll find some of the resulting music and some images. Here’s an overview of my involvement, and for more in depth documentation go here. A paper explaining the wider project can be found here.

My part of the research was kindly supported by Arts Council England and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Additional thanks go to the kind welcome we got at Acud Macht Neu in Berlin.

Mistook my wife’s contented mumbling when asleep for the sound of a mosquito. Got out of bed to look for it. There wasn’t a mosquito. Liz’s sleep became deeper and she stopped mumbling.

When I scan my card to enter college it makes a beeping sound which I misunderstood to mean your card isn’t working. I went to see tech ops to find out what the problem was. There was no problem.

Today when my toast popped I understood the sound to mean that the toast was half done. I put the toast down again. The smoke alarm went off and I had to open the windows. And make more toast.

I decided that the first woodpecker I heard would instantly transport me to my time in the trenches. There was one in Ashton Court and I cried out in anguish. I felt like a twat but there was no one else around except the dog and she didn’t seem to mind.

I couldn’t find my keys so I shook the coats to see if they were in one. I heard a frog croak in one of the pockets. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be my keys.

I thought ‘love’ was ‘hate’ and it started a little argument.

I decided to misunderstand my phone and take its ring to be a fire alarm. It made me acutely aware that hardly anyone phones me.

Tried the phone thing again. This time I did get a call in the evening so I went outside to wait for the all clear. It came after about 30 seconds so I called my brother and lied about why I hadn’t picked up.

Just arrived in the hands of their backers, Sammy Screamers are the first products from BleepBleeps to make it to market. Sound design for the app and object are the beginnings of a substantial exercise in connected audio branding across a range of delightful products and their app.

Since 2012 I’ve been spending a couple of days a week lecturing and tutoring on non-standard compositional methodologies to BMus and Mmus students at RWCMD. It’s a great place and a privilege to teach such able and committed students.

Made in collaboration with Jason Bruges Studios and Dare, this project aimed to make physical the power of EE’s new hyper fast 4G network. My part was sound design, the creation of the sound engine in Max and getting it to hook up to the 30 or so screens that it was supporting. After a very long day installing at Wembley it all came together. Dare have put together a making of video which you can see below.
