I had the recent pleasure of designing the team shirt for San Diego High School's Swim Team. Great people to work for. I think we're all pretty pleased with the outcome. Tried to capture the essence of speed and splashing water without resorting to silhouettes of actual swimmers on the shirt, ya know? Here's the final design. Real pics coming soon!

You might recognize the logo from an earlier entry. The eye & leaf was developed as a possible identity for a creative services firm I am dreaming of launching. I've been doing freelance design work for a while now and sometimes the idea of launching a full fledged studio seems like a definite possibility. The image below is a screenshot of a hosted site that may bring that dream closer to reality. Graphic Garden Creative Services is in beta. Check out the site here ( www.graphicgarden.info ), I put together a nice little flash presentation outlining the services we would provide too. Ah what the hell, I'll embed it here too.

Pecha Kucha

Earlier tonight I decided to attend an event called Pecha Kucha, a gathering of architects where various speakers have 6 minutes, 40 seconds, and 20 slides at 20 seconds each to present an idea, a work in progress, or some kind of theory. The event was held at Woodsbury University's school of architecture in San Diego. I rode my bike down a long dark road under the Coronado bridge to get to there, and hoped for the best.

I was pleased by the variety of topics the presenters chose to discuss. There were presentations focused on the history of light, model building, "weak architecture," personal branding, "fuzzynyms," and the San Diego waterfront. There were some presentations that were concerned with some hardcore architectural stuff that went right over my head. For the most part though, these people were talking about things that should concern all sorts of artists and designers.

What I found particularly interesting was a presentation given by Christopher Puzio. Opening with the bold statement, "Models are Real," he showed how he had been compiling his simple sketches, and then making physical models of them--even the really abstract ones. He explained how seemingly meaningless doodles can begin to reveal patterns and repetition. Bringing those elements into the three dimensional realm further reveals their potential as structural solutions. It was a really cool look into another person's creative process. I didn't feel comfortable taking any photos at this thing, but you can see some of Christopher's work on his website, puzio.com. I didn't know anything about Pecha Kucha until today, but I guess they're going on all over. More info here.

Sequential September

As part of my effort to live an academic, scholarly lifestyle in lieu of embarking on a costly MFA program, I've been focused on sequential art during September. The plan was to both read and produce some sequential artwork all month, and hopefully get better at it.

So that's what I did. I re-read Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" for a start, and as a result got really inspired toward the end of the month. I guess I read it kind of slowly this time.

The refresher course on all the elements of comics was great. McCloud's style is inspirational. His discussion of time, space, communication, color, and language opened my mind to the possibilities of creating comics again.

(This is beginning to sound like a book report.)
OK, simply stated, McCloud's book is awesome. He ties art, history, language, and communication theory into a package that can get you really excited about making comics. I had read it once before while I was a student at Cal Poly, and knew I could use that kind of motivation again.

This time around I decided to dig into McCloud's bibliography a little. He repeatedly recommends "Comics and Sequential Art" by Will Eisner. So I checked it out.

It turns out Eisner is a comics legend and creator of "The Spirit" comics of the 40's and 50's. He taught a course at SVA that the book was based on, and was among the first, if not the first, to analyze comics academically. His book is more serious, and a little less entertaining than McCloud's. But it's clear Eisner's writing heavily influenced McCloud, which McCloud readily admits.

So without re-writing either book, lets just say comics are a super complex, incredibly powerful form of communication that often go underrated. So it takes practice to produce them well. McCloud & Eisner can really inspire a person to just start drawing.

I'm less enthused about the actual amount of work I got done this month. If you were to click over to the cartoon section where this stuff can be found, there are two 3-panel strips, and a one page story of a teen suicide. I drew a couple other ideas during the month that I decided not to post. I'm happy that I was able to get something done, despite contending with a fairly steady flow of client work (which I'm also really happy about, and grateful for). This was a chance to do a new piece of work every day, because the strips get done pretty fast. I will definitely revisit this endeavor of writing comics soon.

This month, I'm going to really stick to a strict schedule of doing personal work. I mean, that was the plan in September too, but it just didn't happen. Similar scenario as in August where I planned to focus on architectural rendering. I got a few drawings done, and read a book about the old school hand rendering methods. But my output was nothing close to what I imagined I would accomplish before I got started. I'm getting more comfortable with falling short of the work that I imagine myself doing, which seems to happen often. The idea being that getting any work done at all is better than fantasizing about getting even better work done. This guy helped with that. But seriously, this month I'm sticking to the schedule!

It's been over a month since I set up shop in San Diego. Running a design service on a shoestring budget hasn' t been easy. It's funny how you can start to believe you can get by being as cheap as possible. I could skimp on internet service and borrow low bandwidth wireless from a neighboring business, I could also rely only on a personal cell phone that is constantly running out of juice and thereby dying during every important conversation with a client. But the cost of actually paying for good bandwidth and a dedicated business line seems to be less than that of losing a client over technical negligence. Basic stuff, I know. But I am learning. I guess there are a few other areas that could use an upgrade, but we don't need to talk about that now.

Of course there are all the usual accounting and billing challenges, time management, and then the actual business of doing my work. One day, in a bright future, I'll have an office manager, an accountant, and an attorney. And life will be simple again.

Bye Pomona

I moved to Pomona in '05 to go to school at Cal Poly. Graduated in '08. Stuck around for another year after that. And after 4 years, it's time to part ways.

But it was a great run, & I wanted to publicly thank everyone who contributed to a cool experience. So thanks to everyone at the Pomona Arts Colony and especially A.S. Ashley and Nate at Selkouth. You guys were the first people to exhibit my work; that means a lot.

Everyone at DBA256, Characters, and Aceragami, thanks for serving 'em cold. Couldn't have done it without money, so thanks to everyone who employed me all this time at I&IT, UHS, GAS, & Lake. And my biggest thanks go to Cal Poly Pomona, the College of Environmental Design, and the Art Faculty.

I'll be not far down the road at Encinitas, CA. My plan is to work, surf, create art, and spend more time with Erica. To all my friends, I'll definitely be seeing you around.

It was nice helping put the P in P-Town.

Save Your Seeds!

Everyday in the United States, millions of families buy millions of pounds of fruits and vegetables. You could say we should be buying and eating even more fruits and vegetables, but that's not the focus here. I want to talk about the tremendous resource worth thousands of dollars that we all throw away everyday-- a resource that could eliminate some of the hunger in the world. Seeds.

Every piece of fruit we bring home contains within it the potential to produce thousands of pounds of more fruit. Yet we keep throwing our seeds away and buying more instead. I think this is crazy. Imagine if we all saved our seeds instead of throwing them away. They would add up fast.

If you lived by the old adage and ate an apple a day, and saved your seeds, you would have up to 105 apple seeds in a week. In a month, 420, and so on.

I'm not suggesting that we all plant every seed we obtain. That would be unnecessary, and expensive. We should all plant a few trees in whatever space we have available. Doing that would benefit us all in multiple ways. There would be a steady supply of free food when the trees become mature. That would bring prices down for those who don't have a space to plant trees, such as people who live in urban areas, like myself. The multitude of additional trees in our environment would have a measurable positive impact on our air supply.

What could we do with the thousands of extra seeds we saved? Check this out. I know there are charities who provide food to hungry nations; the work these people do is awesome. I imagine though that the cost of shipping ready to eat foods could be greatly reduced if we instead shipped barrels and barrels full of seeds. A little education about what to do with the seeds could go an incredibly long way.

I'm not saying this seed scheme will solve all of our problems, but I feel strongly that it's a terrible waste to just throw all those little seeds away. It's like throwing out thousands of dollars. Most of us have become so detached from the nature of growing food that we forget what these little seeds are capable of.

It's just an idea.

I have this fantasy of starting an organization that will accept seed donations from all over, build up large supplies of them, and then arrange to ship them to where they can be used by common people. It's time for us to take control of our own food supply don't you think?

Well there may be an organization doing that somewhere out there. Fill me in if you know of one. But until we find it, we can all start saving our seeds now. Keep a used coffee can in a cupboard and toss your apple seeds in it. Keep a couple and do apples, oranges, and peaches. I would think it would be good to keep each variety separated so someone doesn't have to do it later.

I think it's a good plan. I heard a woman talking about this on the radio a few months back and have been thinking about it ever since. I've been saving seeds. Hey, there's been talk of an impending food crisis in the western world. Maybe seeds will become currency. In my mind they are already more useful and precious than gold, which is just a shiny rock.

Think about it.

Threadless

Threadless.com is an online t-shirt store. All the artwork printed on the tees is submitted by users and rated by the threadless community. The ratings largely determine which shirts are deemed to have market viability, and end up getting printed. The chosen artists are compensated with an upfront $2,000, and an additional $500 every time the shirt is reprinted and restocked. Threadless takes ownership of perpetual and exclusive reproduction rights to the artwork.

Selling exclusive reproduction rights, I suspect, is where many artists and designers would conclude that they're being scammed. I would argue, however, that for artist/designers that are relatively unknown, much like myself, Threadless.com is awesome. Here's why.

Let's suppose that you or I have a design that we're really pleased with. Because we are the artist, we love the image we made, and think it would look great as a t-shirt. It's a sort of narcissism that I think all us young artists have to a degree. We think everything we make is golden.

So lets say we take the next step and think, "I got some cash; I'm going to head to my local print shop and get 100 of these awesome t-shirts printed, and blow up." It sounds like a good idea. You have a great design and you're ready to go. Prices for screen printing vary, but I just grabbed a quote from a random printing company I found through Google.

So lets do the math. These guys will charge you $568.80 for 72 four color printed T-shirts. I know you can find a better price than this somewhere, but follow me on this. Now you have 72 units that you need to move to get your money back, let alone turn a profit. And you can do this. It's entirely possible. But remember we're comparing this process to dealing with Threadless, who will pay you $2,000 upfront for your artwork.

So, let's see. You think you can do better than selling out to Threadless.com and actually make more than 2 Grand at some point from this one design. Well, you've spent $568.80 already, so now these shirts (remember, there are only 72 of them) have to sell for $2,568.80. That's $35.68 per shirt if you want to get your money back and make a $2,000 profit. Alright, that's a pretty reasonable price for a custom, limited edition t-shirt. And granted, you only have to sell 16 shirts at this price just to break even. It's still sounding pretty good. But take in to account the fact that you're now putting a certain amount of labor time trying to sell & promote these things. Your time has value too, because, you are an artist right? And it takes time to make more art.

Furthermore, how realistic is it to assume that 72, let alone 16, people will conclude that your design is worth wearing on their chest? Like I mentioned before, us artists tend to have an emotional attachment to our own work. Often times other people out there just don't share the same feeling. It's kind of difficult to gauge whether a big group of people will decide your design is worth wearing. Remember, there are some pretty awesome alternatives out there going for $25 per unit. And you want to liquidate at $35? Better have an unquestionably awesome design.(Granted, you could do $25, and walk away with a $1,231.20 profit if you throw that $2,000 figure out the window. Keep reproduction rights, reprint at another $568.80 and start over with a new design. This strategy could be very successful potentially. But you're still putting in your own labor and assuming all the risk.)

This is where it becomes clear, in my opinion, that Threadless.com is awesome, or to say the least, they have a pretty smart business model. Why do I say this? It comes back to that user rating system. Having bona fide T-shirt enthusiasts rate a design before it ever gets printed is genius. It's just market research. Find out if anyone besides yourself even likes your design before spending any money. I don't think enough of these start up clothing companies do this. The beauty of it is that the people critiquing your work are not your friends, who will say they love everything you do because they like you. Your friends want you to succeed, and they don't want to be discouraging. This is dangerous because taking all your criticism from friends could lead to making that hasty investment in printing. These are the same people who will expect a free shirt when they do get printed.

Total strangers will be brutally honest, which is good. If enough people say, "hey, your design is not there yet, keep working on it," they could save you a lot of money.

I guess where I'm going with this is that if you want to keep all reproduction rights to your work (which honestly is really advisable, if you do great, marketable work), and want to finance your own printing and self promote and distribute because you love it, just find a way to test your market before you put money in to that one beloved design. Or just print 4 or 5 at first in your garage so you have less to lose.

I'm only writing about this because I've been tempted all year to just go for broke and print up some tees. I'm also speaking out of ignorance because I haven't done it yet. But I did submit a design to Threadless.com a little over a week ago for the first time. My design that I thought was a shoe-in was rated a 1.51 out of 5 by the Threadless community. So yeah, the crowd did not exactly go wild. It made me think.

This was a design that I really really like out of everything I've done in the past year. I love it. I would wear it. Like every day. I have that emotional attachment to it that other people don't have. What if I had dropped 6 bills on printing this thing and nobody wanted to wear it?

Out of a small failure came some insight. And it was free. Thanks threadless.

Reality

Somewhere during my education in Graphic Design I started to feel distressed over whether the things I was making were real.

Being at a school that seemed dominated by its engineering department only aggravated my sense that people all around were designing real things–bridges, buildings, and solar powered cars, while I toiled with my page layouts, illustrations, and logo designs.

My growing concern was that while others were creating useful things that would actually benefit people, my graphic creations were at their core useless for any practical purpose. I never questioned the tremendous impact language and graphic communication have had on the world, but I constantly question my own ability to use these tools to create something worthwhile.

I've been interested in architecture for a couple years. And more so in the past year following graduation. I've moved from entertaining a benign curiosity to actually studying architecture in an academic setting. I should say here that I always tended to group architecture into that list of disciplines whose practitioners were at the work of creating "real" things. But lately I've begun to realize something.

When an architect finishes his work, he doesn't have a completed building. He only has a detailed set of drawings of a building with instructions for the builders. What he has created is merely an idea. It will take the work of possibly hundreds of other people to put the reality together. The people who work the lumber mills and steel refineries, the foundation builders, carpenters, plumbers, drywallers, roofers, electricians, painters, and acoustic t-bar installers will all contribute before the graphic idea of the building becomes a reality.

From this perspective, I appreciate the potential for graphic design to produce something real much more than I have in the past.

If we look at graphic communication as an opportunity to stimulate other people to action, it becomes a powerful tool compatible with any purpose. Sophisticated graphics are capable of motivating sales forces, encouraging self medical exams, teaching children to read, or creating order in mass transit. The list can go on forever.

The same way that architecture can show a crew of workers how to build something, good graphic design can provide instruction and education toward any worthwhile goal. The action taken by the viewer as a result of receiving the message is the reality. If my message (graphic or otherwise) encourages you to plant a tree, and you do it, and 100 other people do as well, and as a result someone's life is improved, then the work becomes worthwhile.

It's this line of thinking that has led me to conclude that my career as a graphic designer is limitless. My loose categorizations of illustration, graphic design, architecture, and cartoons are going to intersect boundaries. I may have felt in the past that my creative pursuits were limited by an academically delineated role written up for me by a board of trustees. But not any more. I think I'm starting to get it.

Website Redesign

I spent the first half of this weekend redesigning my portfolio site. And there are a couple reasons why.

I'm pretty sure that when I launched the version of phillipyniguez.com that has been up for a little less than a year now, people who know me may have thought it was a little odd that after spending 5 years earning a BFA in Graphic Design I would launch an Illustration portfolio. In retrospect I see it as a little odd myself. I think in a way I was reacting to the exhausting process I had just undergone, and wanted to do something entirely different.

I realize the problem was not that I was doing a lot of drawing and wanting to show people. It was that I completely eliminated Graphics. Those things that I had spent so much time learning to design. At the same time I had taken a full time graphic design job and kind of concluded that the need for me to have a Graphics portfolio online was over. And now I have completely changed my mind about that.

So now I have a site that gives both disciplines their own place. Design and illustration share equal prominence here, and that's the way it should be. I don't expect anyone to fall out of their chairs when they see the design work that I hurriedly posted today. I know a lot of you have seen it before. I just didn't want to announce that my site is redesigned only for people to come look and find an empty "Graphic Design" section. How embarrassing. The simple format I've developed lends itself to frequent updating. So wish me luck on that.

There's some other new stuff that may seem just as conspicuous as my 2008 "Phillip Yniguez Illustration" fiasco. Yeah, there's an architecture section. "But Phillip isn't an architect!" That's right, I'm not. But I have been taking a few classes here and there and I'm getting more & more into it. Not claiming to have any groundbreaking work here, just created some motivation for myself to keep drawing. I don't know if I'll be posting many technical drawings here. I'll keep it to sketches & renderings because I think those are more fun to look at.

Another cool thing is that I added a place for cartoons. I've been creating cartoon characters since I was a baby and I'm going to continue to do so till the end. Haven't had much published, with the exception of a brief stint at the Poly Post. So what the hell. I'm going to self publish starting now. This is a place where I didn't want to fill the space with old work. The plan is to constantly update. Isn't it always?

Obviously you found the "theory" section. What's this section for? You guessed it—long winded self statements. I'm going to keep writing them but you don't have to read them. Hope you do though.
