I was looking for sweet airplanes for a poster project and came across this little trove of science and mechanics magazine covers. Most of them have nice high res scans to oggle, and supporting articles with cool diagrams, photos and whatnot.

I am partial to the flying wing cover.

And as long as we’re on the topic of aviation, the Lockheed Constellation was the most beautiful commercial aircraft ever conceived. Discuss.

There’s something special about a great poster. It’s not exactly an illustration and yet it isn’t exactly a design either. Brilliant posters are a magical kind of hybrid that appeals to a wide swath of humanity. The truly brilliant ones communicate their intent even when the words on them are in a language that is foreign. So it is with a new series of posters that Simon Page designed for the simple pleasure of it. He chose the International Year of Astronomy (2009) as a foil for exploring his passion for geometric design and came up with eight posters reminiscent of the space race of the 60’s that none the less feel really fresh. My favorite part of the story is that response to his designs has been so overwhelmingly positive and so wide spread that representatives from the IYA2009 actually contacted him and the posters are in production now. Tell me that isn’t what you dream about happening to one of your side projects. Nice work Simon and kudos to the IYA2009 for recognizing a good thing and acting on it.

You ride a bike for the love of the ride but appreciate the health benefits too. And I might ad that smiling and fit is a great look on you. To draw a little more well deserved attention to your tail end try attaching these sweet panniers from Queen Bee Creations. Hand made by actual humans in Portland, OR these babies are well designed for artful form and function. Plus they’ll haul as much as a SUV (usually carries) while allowing you to definitively concur the moral high ground.

okay, it’s official. over the last few months, i’ve become a knitter. and since i love vintage style, i was especially excited to find that the victoria & albert museum has some amazing vintage knitting patterns from the 1940s available to download as pdfs or word docs. i am especially taken with the convertible mittens. check out all the patterns here. i think a lot of them have sort of an anthropologie -esque quality, especially if knit in a luxury yarn…

oh, and these little knit plushies too. i love the lion!
