MC #69: Interview with Tucker Max and Nils Parker

[NOTE: This is the censored version. For the uncensored version, visit RandomChatter.com]

In this special bonus episode, Andrew chats with screenwriters Tucker Max and Nils Parker about their upcoming film I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Tucker is a bestselling author and blogger whose writings have inspired a great deal of debate over the past few years for their perceived sexism. The first half of the interview focuses on the film; the second deals directly with Tucker and all the controversy that surrounds him.

NOTES FROM ANDREW:

Tucker Max: Tucker Max is the bestselling author of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, a collection of essays which narrate his personal stories of debauchery, drunkenness, and sexual conquests. His website, www.TuckerMax.com, attracts millions of viewers and has gained notoriety for its frank discussion of similar stories. He also served as a co-writer and co- producer on the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, which opens nationwide on September 25th.

Nils Parker: Nils Parker is the co-writer and co-producer of the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, and a good friend of Tucker.

The Controversy: Tucker Max has been credited by some with helping to invent a new genre of writing known as "fratire." His writing usually focuses on personal stories of drinking to excess and his various sexual conquests. Many people view his stories as sexist and misogynistic, and as a result controversy seems to follow wherever he goes. This interview was no different. It occurred after a screening of the film at N.C. State University. Nearly a hundred protesters were present at the theater holding signs that accused Tucker of promoting a "rape culture" and being a misogynist. You can read more about the situation here, here and here. Tucker has posted a response to the protesters, which you can read here.

The Interview: The interview was conducted in the IHTSBIH tour bus following the screening. I apologize for some of the sound quality - with the way the microphone was set up, I wanted to make sure that Nils and Tucker's levels were crystal clear, but as a result my levels were slightly lower. This has been fixed as much as possible, and you shouldn't have too many problems understanding my questions. This interview is unedited, complete with minor interruptions. It was very casual, and Tucker and Nils do occasionally use profanity, so you can choose to listen to either a censored or an uncensored version.

Also, due to the controversy surrounding Tucker, I need to emphasize that MovieChatter neither condemns nor condones the opinions expressed in this interview. In the second half of the interview I focused entirely on Tucker and some of the heavier issues associated with him, and it's possible that, as with most everything regarding Tucker, some people will find his answers offensive. While we encourage healthy discussion of these issues, please do not send us angry emails just about the fact that we interviewed him. Our goal is to talk with filmmakers from all walks of life, even the ones that, to paraphrase Nils, "live in the gray." On that note, I hope you have as much fun listening to the interview as I did recording it.

MovieChatter is back from its hiatus!

Join Andrew, Morgan and Erik as they unveil some major announcements about the future of the show, and then dive into a no-holds-barred discussion of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen!
Is Michael Bay's latest effort a masterpiece of blockbuster cinema, or does it suffer from too much Bay-itis (symptoms include nauseousness from insane camera movement and quick-cutting)?

MC #55: Owning the Weather with Robert Greene

It turns out there's an inconvenient truth that Al Gore hasn't figured out: that weather modification may be possible, and the key to solving global warming. But is it the miracle we need, or just wishful thinking? That's the subject of a yet-to-be-released documentary called Owning the Weather, which Andrew and Morgan share their general thoughts on. Andrew then calls up director Robert Greene to talk about his experience making the film, weather modification, and why Liv Tyler's boyfriend sucks, among other things.

MC #54: Unmistaken Child and director Nati Baratz

Today's show consists of an extra-long Indie Focus segment. Andrew and Morgan discuss a new documentary film sweeping the festival scene, Unmistaken Child. Will this film about a Buddhist monk searching for his master's reincarnation help you reach nirvana, or is it just bad karma? Afterwards, Andrew conducts a lengthy interview with the filmmaker, Nati Baratz, and obtains some very detailed information about the process of shooting the film.

Last week, Andrew & Morgan rated Wolverine a "2" and a "1" on a scale of ten, despite Erik insisting it wasn't nearly that bad. This week, one of the two of them bucked Rotten Tomatoes' 96% rating for Star Trek, giving it a "0.5". Insane, I know.

Did it do the book justice? Did Snyder destroy the film? Was the adaptation too literal? Did the soundtrack help or hurt the film? Listen to Andrew, Morgan, and Erik discuss all this and more.

Morgan, Andrew, and Erik may not all agree on Fanboys, but they certainly agree that Roger Ebert went too far with his attack on Star Wars fans.
This week we look at Luc Besson's new action film Taken, starring Liam Neeson.

Can Neeson pull this off without looking like Jason Bourne or James Bond? Is Uninvited any good? Should we see Pink Panther 2? Why doesn't Morgan like Blade Runner? Find out the answers to those questions and more!*
MC_2008: Happy Holidays!

We've pretty much gotten to the point where none of the hosts' schedules are compatible with each other's due to various holiday commitments, so we're signing off until the end of the year. But I've recorded a very short holiday message I'd like everyone to listen to. I'm putting it in all four feeds to make sure everyone gets it, but it's the same file, so you only need to listen to it once.

Please check out our brief holiday episode. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned for great things ahead in 2009. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

We've got multiple movies for you this week -- and I when I say "we" I mean "they." Ren and I (Erik) were unable to make this recording. But fear not! Andrew and Morgan discuss Milk, The Day the Earth Stood Still, some Jesse James movie, Noir, umm.... and some other stuff I don't remember, because this episode is just way too jam-packed! It's eXtreme!.

P.S.: Yes Morgan, you're correct. There is sometimes a "C".

P.P.S.: Yes guys, I am still listening. You do realize the outtakes are almost as long as the actual episode, right? ;)
It's "Attack of the Chick Flicks" week here at MovieChatter. Morgan saw Rachel Getting Married, Andrew saw Twilight, and Erik saw Bolt. Unfortunately, Erik's a bit under the weather, so he's sitting this episode out (we'll have a Bolt review later this week). But be sure to check out this review of Twilight and Rachel Getting Married!

Cool new Bond flick, or Bourne rip-off? In this episode, we talk about Quantum of Solace, the sequel to Casino Royale. Morgan hated it, Erik loved it, and Andrew was wishy-washy (he's not writing this post, so I can say whatever I want to about him. Nyah!). Come listen to Morgan, Erik, and Andrew try to school each other on what makes a good Bond film.

MC_024: Max Payne

There's nothing I can say that won't detract from this awesome shred-fest by Andrew and special guest Morgan (The (Hide and) Seeker). From the sounds of this review, this could be the worst film of the year.

It sounds like another Ultraviolet. In that way, I'm sorry I didn't see it. Sounds like it would have been fun to tear apart. Even if you didn't see the film, you should check out this review. Morgan and Andrew truly know how to shred a film.

Andrew, Ren and Erik take a look at Quarantine, this year's non-franchise Halloween horror movie.

Done from a first-person point of view, much like Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, this film follows a news reporter as she tags along with the fire department to an apartment building. It's basically yet-another-zombie film, but it's handled far better than most and much like with 28 Days Later, it treats the zombie situation realistically.

That's all fine and dandy, but was it any good? Listen and find out!

MC_019: Top 5 Thematic Sci-Fi

This week we're going to try something different. We've been wanting to do some "top five" features for a while now. Things like "top five plot twists." Or "top five movie lines." Or "top five worst haircuts" (which I guess would be a "bottom five" list).

So today we're going to start out easy (after all, that haircut one sounds painful). We're doing our top five thematic sci-fi films. I don't mean movies like Star Wars. We're talking movies that are trying to speak to us. Movies that make us think. Movies not by Michael Bay. ;)

This week we're taking a break from the theaters (though check out Andrew's review of Step Brothers). Instead, we're revisiting our "versus" series, this time with a bit of a spin. Rather than having Andrew and Erik face off over a single movie, we're debating which is better -- Blade Runner or The Matrix.

MC_014: The Dark Knight

The biggest opening weekend in movie history. The largest midnight showing. The best IMAX opening ever. The Dark Knight broke some pretty impressive records, but was it all hype, or was there any substance? Or more specifically, was the substance deserving of the hype?

We loved the movie, but we try to put some things into perspective. And yes, that means we had some complaints. But not very many. This is a hard movie to complain about.

MC_012: Hellboy 2

One of us said Hellboy 2 was a lot of fun, with creative imagery, great action scenes, and enjoyable characters. One of us said Hellboy 2 was even worse than Indy 4, with caricatures rather than characters and a plot that made him go from bored to frustrated to angry. As you can imagine, it was a fun show to record.

With this episode, we're going back to a format we used long ago, where we start by giving a quick spoiler-free review, and then (with warning) enter into a longer spoiler-filled discussion. Rather than merely doing reviews, we want to facilitate discussion about films.

MC_011: Hancock

Our Hancock review this week is short, since most of our complaints are at the end of the film, and we're trying to avoid spoilers.

This movie will make a killing at the box office, and there'll be a large crowd who'll think it's great, but I think most of that is hold-over from the very enjoyable first half of the film. As much as we wanted to like it, the movie is simply not very good.

Listen to find out why, then go to http://forums.randomchatter.com to participate in the movie discussion with us.

            <itunes:subtitle>Discussion of Hancock</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Our Hancock review this week is short, since most of our complaints are at the end of the film, and we're trying to avoid spoilers.

This movie will make a killing at the box office, and there'll be a large crowd who'll think it's great, but I think most of that is hold-over from the very enjoyable first half of the film. As much as we wanted to like it, the movie is simply not very good.

Listen to find out why, then go to http://forums.randomchatter.com to participate in the movie discussion with us.</itunes:summary>

MC_010: WALL-E, Wanted

This week we're discussing both WALL-E and Wanted. Is WALL-E just a bunch of cute fluff, or is there anything beneath the surface? Is Wanted just an excuse to get Angelina Jolie on the big screen again, or does it have anything unique to offer? And will Andrew ever find a 2008 release he really likes? Listen to find out!

MC_009: Get Smart

Other than "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", there haven't been many good comedies out this year. Fortunately, we now have "Get Smart," a refreshingly good action comedy. Unless you're Andrew, that is -- he found it lame and predictable.

Why does Andrew not like it? Does it live up to the hype? Are all the funny parts in the trailers? Is Steve Carrell's take on the character acceptable? Listen and find out!

Wow. Andrew really didn't like Forbidden Kingdom. At all.

Sure, Forbidden Kingdom dominated the box office two weekends ago, but that was apparently the result of good marketing. Andrew's review is insightful and... umm... well, passionate (I think the channeling of Dennis Leary at one point was unintentional). Did I mention he really didn't like this movie?

As an added bonus, I've included Andrew's "Top 5 Kung Fu Fights" feature. He recorded this before the movie came out, but it seems fitting that the show end on a high-note.

MC_001: Street Kings

By popular demand, the RandomChatter podcast is splitting off the movie reviews into its own show! Welcome to the premiere episode of MovieChatter!

With MovieChatter, we'll be doing two types of shows. The first is a discussion-based format like you're used to. The other is a short "microcast" format in which we'll give five- to ten-minute-long reviews of movies. These will include new theatrical releases, new DVD releases, and even some older "Pick of the Week" DVDs.

In our first episode, we cover the cop drama Street Kings, in which Keanu "Whoa" Reeves, Forest "Gump" Whitaker, Chris "Flame On" Evans, and Hugh "Real Actor" Laurie read from a script written by a high-schooler. At least, that's how it seemed to us...
