In this special bonus episode, Andrew chats with screenwriters Tucker Max and Nils Parker about their upcoming film I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Tucker is a bestselling author and blogger whose writings have inspired a great deal of debate over the past few years for their perceived sexism. The first half of the interview focuses on the film; the second deals directly with Tucker and all the controversy that surrounds him.

NOTES FROM ANDREW:

Tucker Max: Tucker Max is the bestselling author of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, a collection of essays which narrate his personal stories of debauchery, drunkenness, and sexual conquests. His website, www.TuckerMax.com, attracts millions of viewers and has gained notoriety for its frank discussion of similar stories. He also served as a co-writer and co- producer on the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, which opens nationwide on September 25th.

Nils Parker: Nils Parker is the co-writer and co-producer of the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, and a good friend of Tucker.

The Controversy: Tucker Max has been credited by some with helping to invent a new genre of writing known as "fratire." His writing usually focuses on personal stories of drinking to excess and his various sexual conquests. Many people view his stories as sexist and misogynistic, and as a result controversy seems to follow wherever he goes. This interview was no different. It occurred after a screening of the film at N.C. State University. Nearly a hundred protesters were present at the theater holding signs that accused Tucker of promoting a "rape culture" and being a misogynist. The Interview: The interview was conducted in the IHTSBIH tour bus following the screening. I apologize for some of the sound quality - with the way the microphone was set up, I wanted to make sure that Nils and Tucker's levels were crystal clear, but as a result my levels were slightly lower. This has been fixed as much as possible, and you shouldn't have too many problems understanding my questions. This interview is unedited, complete with minor interruptions. It was very casual, and Tucker and Nils do occasionally use profanity, so you can choose to listen to either a censored or an uncensored version.

Also, due to the controversy surrounding Tucker, I need to emphasize that MovieChatter neither condemns nor condones the opinions expressed in this interview. In the second half of the interview I focused entirely on Tucker and some of the heavier issues associated with him, and it's possible that, as with most everything regarding Tucker, some people will find his answers offensive. While we encourage healthy discussion of these issues, please do not send us angry emails just about the fact that we interviewed him. Our goal is to talk with filmmakers from all walks of life, even the ones that, to paraphrase Nils, "live in the gray." On that note, I hope you have as much fun listening to the interview as I did recording it.

There's nothing I can say that won't detract from this awesome shred-fest by Andrew and special guest Morgan (The (Hide and) Seeker). From the sounds of this review, this could be the worst film of the year.

It sounds like another Ultraviolet. In that way, I'm sorry I didn't see it. Sounds like it would have been fun to tear apart. Even if you didn't see the film, you should check out this review. Morgan and Andrew truly know how to shred a film.

MC_023: Quarantine

Andrew, Ren and Erik take a look at Quarantine, this year's non-franchise Halloween horror movie.

Done from a first-person point of view, much like Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, this film follows a news reporter as she tags along with the fire department to an apartment building. It's basically yet-another-zombie film, but it's handled far better than most and much like with 28 Days Later, it treats the zombie situation realistically.

That's all fine and dandy, but was it any good? Listen and find out!

The biggest opening weekend in movie history. The largest midnight showing. The best IMAX opening ever. The Dark Knight broke some pretty impressive records, but was it all hype, or was there any substance? Or more specifically, was the substance deserving of the hype?

We loved the movie, but we try to put some things into perspective. And yes, that means we had some complaints. But not very many. This is a hard movie to complain about.

One of us said Hellboy 2 was a lot of fun, with creative imagery, great action scenes, and enjoyable characters. One of us said Hellboy 2 was even worse than Indy 4, with caricatures rather than characters and a plot that made him go from bored to frustrated to angry. As you can imagine, it was a fun show to record. With this episode, we're going back to a format we used long ago, where we start by giving a quick spoiler-free review, and then (with warning) enter into a longer spoiler-filled discussion. Rather than merely doing reviews, we want to facilitate discussion about films.

Wow. Andrew really didn't like Forbidden Kingdom. At all. Sure, Forbidden Kingdom dominated the box office two weekends ago, but that was apparently the result of good marketing. Andrew's review is insightful and... umm... well, passionate (I think the channeling of Dennis Leary at one point was unintentional). Did I mention he really didn't like this movie? As an added bonus, I've included Andrew's "Top 5 Kung Fu Fights" feature. He recorded this before the movie came out, but it seems fitting that the show end on a high-note.

With MovieChatter, we'll be doing two types of shows. The first is a discussion-based format like you're used to. The other is a short "microcast" format in which we'll give five- to ten-minute-long reviews of movies. These will include new theatrical releases, new DVD releases, and even some older "Pick of the Week" DVDs. In our first episode, we cover the cop drama Street Kings, in which Keanu "Whoa" Reeves, Forest "Gump" Whitaker, Chris "Flame On" Evans, and Hugh "Real Actor" Laurie read from a script written by a high-schooler. At least, that's how it seemed to us...
