Samsung reveals two new RAWsumers

Samsung has finally decided to embrace RAW for fixed-lens digital cameras, and today they have surprised, by announcing, not one, but two RAWsumers! Both appear to be interesting, with the Samsung EX1 (TL500) having a 10mp 1/1.7" backlit CMOS sensor, an f1.8 lens, 24-72mm equivalent, 3-inch AMOLED swiveling LCD display but 30fps VGA video which may remind y'all of the Canon S90.

The other camera, the Samsung TL350 (WB2000) appears to be using the (or a variation of) 10mp 1/2.3" backlit CMOS sensor, with 1080p video, 24-120mm lens, and two analog gauges on top of the camera. Both obviously offer manual exposure control.

Both have been added to the list of RAWsumers going from 2002 to 2010. The total for 2010 is now five RAWsumers!

Olympus may have given up on RAWsumers, but their previous RAWsumers continue to keep on ticking! Here is a street-photography picture with a very organic feel to it, taken with the Olympus C8080 and shared in the dpreview Olympus forum. Yes, the C8080 was the camera that got a glowing highly-recommended review by Phil Askey himself!

New RAWsumer: Fuji HS10 (HS11)

We forgot to mention this here due to the waves of new cameras, but we have a new RAWsumer this week, it is the brand new Fuji HS10 (HS11), which uses the 1/2.3" backlit CMOS sensor and has a 30X zoom lens, yet it is relatively compact in size considering the zoom-ratio!

The camera has been added to the list of RAWsumers, and it makes it three for 2010!

RAWsumers cool off a little bit at MAP Camera for December 2009

DigitalCamera.jp has published the December 2009 top sellers at MAP Camera in Japan and the RAWsumers have cooled off a little bit there. In the new-in-box top 10, we have two RAWsumers, the Panasonic LX3 and the Ricoh GRD III, while in the Used Top 20 we have just three, but they are in the top ten, led by the Ricoh GRD II at #4, along with the GX200 and Shiguma DP1.

Leica Digilux 2 flashback at Steve Huff

Steve Huff takes a trip down memory lane with the Leica Digilux 2. Yes, that is a rawsumer from earlier in the decade, the Leica version of the Panasonic LC1. This is the camera Panasonic made to show the world they can make "serious cameras" and not just "appliances". This came shortly after the controversy of the LC5 "Monet".

Canon S90 custom-grip shown in Japan

Japanese website DC Watch Impress points out that there is a new custom-grip for the Canon S90 offered by Oriental Hobbies. This is not a battery grip, just a grip-grip.

David Brooks on the Sigma DP1s

David Brooks of the New Shutterbug Times has published his first impressions of the Sigma DP1s. This is the third camera in the DP-series of fixed-lens Foveonesque cameras by Sigma. DP1s action has been fairly quite so far, partially because of the many other cameras and systems out there, partly because Sigma has inadvertently done everything in their power to alienate the average photographer [exaggeration] :)

The camera is actually shipping, the best price right now is $550 at Adorama.com.

This is nice, we are just seven days in in 2010, and we already have two RAWsumers announced! The second one is the speed-demon Casio EX-FH100, which uses the high-speed CMOS back-lit sensor and a body borrowed from the H10/H15 blade-zooms.

We are not quite sure what to make this, other than two reviews posted at the same time in the same article :) Digital Versus via Tom's Guide have published their Canon S90 review which also includes attached to it a review of the Nikon S1000pj [reviews] which is not a RAWsumer (that's the camera with the built-in projector).

In terms of availability, the camera is around $400 just about everywhere as you can see from its stock status page, however, some retailers are creating bundles with some freebies while keeping the price steady at $400. One such example is Beach Camera on Amazon.
